    Title: Defending Billy Ryan
    Author: George V. Higgins
    Narrator: Adams Morgan
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 19 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-17-05
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 21 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Legal Thrillers
    Publisher's Summary:
In best-selling author George Higgins' electrifying legal thriller, Jerry Kennedy, the guy his ex-wife calls "the classiest sleazy criminal lawyer", must defend the man that no one else will: Billy Ryan.
    An excerpt:
"If they didn't have Billy for selling the apple to the serpent who peddled it to Eve, it was because the serpent refused to testify against him. Professional courtesy and all that."

    Critic Reviews:
"Writes with an authenticity that is unmatched." (Washington Post)
"Flawless. Never a false word, phrase, rhythm." (New Republic)

Higgins Is a Master of Dialogue.
"Show don't tell," that's what they tell you in writer's class, right? And yet there's always someone who breaks the rules so brilliantly that the rule seems stupid. Higgins is one of those. Elmore Leonard almost does that, but he mixes brilliant dialogue with explosive spurts of action....
Higgins takes the next step and almost entirely 'describes' action... second party action. Everything's reported to the listener through the filter of Higgins whacky characters. Perhaps Higgins is an acquired taste? Dunno, but I done got it.
Look, don't start this series with "Defending Billy Ryan". Nope, start learning about Jerry Kennedy with "Kennedy for the Defense" and enjoy the trip along through Billy Ryan's defense. Higgins is as good as any playwright working. And Adams Morgan, even if he affects more of an English than a Boston accent, brings these ensemble casts to life.
    Great story
A very well narrated story featuring great dialogue. Highly recommended.
    Lawyer book
This is what takes place in the practice of criminal law. The good and the bad.
    Rambling words
If this book wasnt for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?
The style of the book I meant that it wasn't a story, it was just rambling, there may have been a story in there somewhere but there was nothing to grip me. As a result I hadn't a clue who was who, I half listened mainly longing for the end so I could listen to something else

Getting way too left wing political
I'm quickly losing interest in grishams books. I enjoyed reading most of his books. They were just about lawyers without getting politics involved. His last two, including this one, have far too much left wing political bs for my taste. Sigh you good luck in the future, but I'm probably done reading Grisham. I will miss him. Too bad. He WAS a good read before.
    Fascinating Read
Learned a good deal about homeless folks in our cities and law and justice relating to such folks. But most of all enjoyed a well-written story.

Made me think about homeless people and how terrible there life style is and you canât help to ask why. Enjoyed the book because the topic was so different from what other authors write today.
    street lawyer a gripping novel
This novel had me struggling to stop reading. The more I read the more I realized that this was more about corporate greed and the ills of our society which correlates with that personal and corporate greed. Certainly we take for granted do much of our middle, upper middle and upper social class outlook on life and whats good for us and how this view may not match that of the less educated and fortunate. A storyline which invoked much soul searching and food for thought on what is the truth and doing the right thing really worth to me personally and any institution that I may represent as a finance professional. I found the writing style crisp, pointed and enlightening. A good read to awaken your social conscience
    Excellent
Very well written. .... what did I expect, right? The best part is that this book has me looking inward. Thank you!

Not some of Grisham's best work. The storyline is weak
Not some of Grisham's best work. The storyline is weak, and barely holds together. For me the mystery is not much of a mystery. I liked the story, and it has some real potential to be a great story.
I Enjoyed The Summons by John Grishman/Read by Mr. Beck
I must admit I gave the book an extra star because of Michael Beck. (I'm a huge fan of audiobooks and will only purchase Grisham's audiobooks if they are read by Mr. Beck) I loved The Summons. Mr. Grisham has not lost his flair for interesting, heart-thumping, twists and turns stories. I am suprised many of Grisham's fans were disappointed. This novel surpassed my expectation. It takes an exceptional author to consistently give his fans their money worth and Mr. Grishman is such an author. If you are a true fan of Grisham and you live in the real world you will understand not all of Mr Grisham books will live up to everyone's expectations. Every author goes through GREAT novels and good novels periods. Mr. Grisham has not disappointed me yet.
    Superb tale
Can't put it down story of family turmoil, hidden money, siblings fighting, and suspense in a southern little nosey town.
    Excellent read
Another captivating read by Grisham. Can't wait for the next book. I hope it's a continuation of this one! Fantastic.
    A good read
A good story - interesting read on the airplane. Keeps your attention and a story you will want to finish.

    A Rare Gift!
The Broker is good. The narrator is brilliant! Congratulations, Denis Boutsikaris! I listened to his portrayal of 'The lost gospel....'and will now try to get hold of all the books he has read. He really has a gift to bring even ordinary text to fascinating light!
Most certainly a 5 star story
I am fairly new to audio books and mainly listen at work. Before The Broker I had listened to a few other stories, but always found myself realising that I had missed entire chapters while my mind wandered elsewhere. With The Broker I was hooked from the start and listened intently to every word. It's extremly well written and really well read.
I very much recommend that you give this one a try!
    Disappointing
I have read previous novels by this author, which I found very interesting and exciting. I was therefore expecting much more from this book.
Sadly this is far from his usual high standard.
    Abridged
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
This is one of my favourite John Grisham books that imo should not be abridged.
    A Good Read (Listen)
Not one of my favourite JG books but still a decent read. I listened to it on a long drive to London and it did help alleviate a tedious drive.

    Choose the Unabridged Version!
I listened to this on the back of two meaty unabridged books but just found it too quick. So much detail is crammed into the five hours devaluing a lot of it unfortunately. Yes, I know, that's what abridging is all about but it's not for me i'm afraid.
The story itself is gripping so no disrespect to the author - i'm sure the lad will go far! ;-) Definitely worth a listen but go for the longer version!
    The King of Torts
A gripping book from start to finish, brilliant, one of his best.

    Wonderful
I have listened to this book several times and each time it is as enjoyable as the first. The characters are real. It was fun reading and held my interest throughout.
    Very well done
What disappointed you about The Last Juror?
    Nothing
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
    Yes. Thrrough continued changes
Which character as performed by Terrence Mann was your favorite?
    None especially
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
    Yes. It was quite goood
    Any additional comments?
I just read On Wings of Eagles. I have never read a more badly printed book. For example, the word them priints out as diem. Ken Follett and a number appear on most pages. Some pages are almost gibberish. You should be ashamed of yourselves
Slow start but an enjoyable listen
very different to many of his books; there is very little 'action' but an interesting study of the Mississippi area.

    Critic Reviews:
"Arvin's writing is delightfully sardonic....You'll be hooked." (People)
    Members Reviews:
Excellent , Fun and Surprisingly Touching ...
This is a well-written, hip narrative read by a perfect-for-the-part narrator. I read tons of crime/mystery and this one is entertaining, surprising, and a darn good story! The title is unfortunate in that it is so trite, but don't let this mislead you. A satisfying and enjoyable selection, like a good TV movie...
    Not overly impressed
This book was "OK" but I wouldn't recommend it. It had potential but seemed to drag at times and the ending was a little crazy.... I would give it a 5 or 6 out of 10.
    Modern Day Dick Tracy Type
What made the experience of listening to The Last Goodbye the most enjoyable?
When you add a little jazz music to a plot ( beginning and end of chapter) gives the feeling of watching an old Dick Tracy mystery show. The story topic was new to the twist of suspense.Yes, you have the normal love ,lust, greed and power but the why was new for me.
What did you like best about this story?
To know there is still good people who does things for the right reason.
    Which scene was your favorite?
It took all the scene to carry the story line. But if I had to choose placing the money on the market shares.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Faith in people comes to mind. Many characters in the story line make mistakes but somebody seems to come along and dust them off and give help in some fashion. Not always a happy ending.
    Any additional comments?
If you like Greg Isle's writing you will like this author. I am going to try another book by the author.

"Scottoline's ability to mix humor with serious subject matter, combined with her intense research of inner city drug trafficking and a side plot involving Vicki's love life, make for compelling entertainment." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Disappointed
This book was so entirely different from Lisa Scottoline's other books. The characters were not believable and the main character did things I can' believe anyone in their right mind would do. The plot was boring and predictable and completely unrealistic. In fact, everything about this book was unrealistic including the dynamics (if one can call it that) between the characters and, even more noticeably, the motivations of the characters. It was as if this book was written by someone else entirely. I am really bumfuzzled by this one. One star is one too many.
    disappointing
Not up to her usual standards. Not crisp and witty, rather mundane. Very disappointing.
