    Release date: 02-02-10
    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Legal Thrillers
    Publisher's Summary:
Urged by old friends to try to restore the town to its former glory, Penn has ridden into office on a tide of support for change. But in its quest for new jobs and fresh money, Natchez has turned to casino gambling. Five fantastical steamboats float on the river beside the old slave market, like props from Gone with the Wind. But one boat isn't like the others. Rumour has it that the Magnolia Queen has found a way to pull the big players from Las Vegas. And with them comes an unquenchable taste for one thing: blood sport, and the dark vices that go with it.
When a childhood friend of Penn's who brings him evidence of these crimes is brutally murdered, the full weight of Penn's failure to protect this city hits home. So begins his quest to find the men responsible. But it's a hunt he begins alone, for the local authorities have been corrupted by the money and power of his hidden enemy.
With his family's life at stake, Penn realizes his only allies in his one-man war are those bound to him by blood or honour.

    Another engrossing Penn Cage adventure!
So well written. We know evil walks among us we just don't know how close. Great characters you want to visit again and again. You hope the good guys can prevail but you feel the malevolence is strong. I grant you that I love series books but this is a really good one.
    Awesome
Kate and Penn are reunited and out to save the city of Natchez...Penn is mayor now and Kate has returned after hurricane Katrina. Penn agreed to allow another gambling boat on the river only to find he has allowed the devil himself into his city...
Another good read from Greg Iles
This was an intense story... It was typical of Greg Iles' detail of small towns and interesting places along Mississippi River. The story was good, but it was about some very bad people. It kept me interested.

Greg Iles is a great author - I enjoy that the unexpected always happen in his books. His stories are fast paced. I like that he uses words that I have never seen before. I enjoy looking them in with my Kindle learning these words. This book was no exception to his other books. However, in this book, I found that I could not read some of the descriptions of criminal activities as they were too disturbing for me. I skipped over some of those pages.
    gripping story
I love this author. His plots are complex and hold the reader's attention the entire time. This book was no exception. I kept reading as fast as I could to make sure the villains paid for their cruelty. Excellent

Can't make it past hour two....
This is so dryly read in monotone, that I can't make it into the second hour. I am going to guess that the written book is good enough, but this audible book lover is not impressed.... Maybe I will try again. But until then, this is a 2.

    Doesn't disappoint
As always, this book was excellent reading. Richard Montanari's writing never disappoints me. His characters are realistic and compelling, although frightening,
    Fast-paced thriller
A high-flying and ambitious new York Attorney, Michael Roman, who is one step away from the top DA job and appears to have all that he could wish for, suddenly finds his life crumbling all around him. His beautiful twin daughters were adopted from his parents' homeland of Estonia. A crazy man from that country believes that he has a strong claim on the girls and heads to the USA to take back what he believes to be rightfully his.
If that were the extent of the story, it wouldn't be worth reading, but the man believes that both he and the girls are living parts of an Estonian folklore. What ensues is a total nightmare, made worse by Michael's determination to hide what he knows of the truth from his friends who could help him.
There are some horrific, gory scenes in this book, and it moves along at a cracking pace, never losing its tension and momentum.
This is an easy to read book and keeps the reader's attention from beginning to end.

    Publisher's Summary:
With his business and his life at risk, with plenty of enemies and few friends, he begins the grim process of preserving himself at all costs.
A raw portrait of the dark side of high-stakes civil-law practice, Book of Business is a frightening look at a shadowy world that many imagine but only true insiders ever see.
    Critic Reviews:
"Here is a refreshing new entry in the legal fiction landscape which matches the best: tension, high drama, revealing insights into large law office practice, and intrigue with surprises throughout. A splendid page turner for both lawyers and non-lawyers." (Jerome J. Shestack, Esq., Past President of the American Bar Association; Former Ambassador to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights)
"Lawyers everywhere will immediately recognize the unappealing characters in Book of Business. They haunt almost every law firm, and it's not a pretty picture. But that's what makes Will Nathan's book such an engrossing exercise in the 'there but for fortune... ' category." (Robin Meadow, Esq., Past President, Los Angeles County Bar Association)

    Great voice, great book
I am picky but I really like this book. Surprising to hear a woman's voice convey so many charactors so distinctly and effortlessly. I highly recommend this audiobook.
    Gripping!
Not your run-of-the-mill legal thriller, Book of Business gives the listener a true to life portrait of the high-stakes civil-law scene -- and it's not pretty. Gripping narration of a book with balls -- and that by a woman, no less.

But Kyle won't be working for the company, but against it - passing on the secrets of the company's biggest trial to date, a dispute between two defense contractors worth billions of dollars to the victor. Now Kyle is caught between the criminal forces manipulating him and the FBI, who would love to unmask the conspiracy. Will his intellect, cunning, and bravery be enough to extricate him from an impossible dilemma?
Full of twists and turns and reminiscent of The Firm, The Associate is vintage John Grisham

    Ordinary
Having read all of John Grisham books I looked forward with anticipation to listening to one. What a light weight book this is. It would seem that maybe John Grisham is turning out too many books and is turning simple ideas into long drawn out melodramas.
    Don't bother.
    Disappointing overall
Whilst this story has an interesting premise, and I understand based on an idea from an actual case, this was very disappointing overall for me. This was my first abridged audiobook, and my initial reaction when I finished was that 'abridged' means removing the ending! The story finishes so abruptly without any form of resolution and numerous 'loose ends' just kept open.
    First JG in many years
I thoroughly enjoyed it, although the end is left a little too open for my taste.
Another hour or two to tie things up would have made it 5*
    Enjoy
    Okay I guess
I was expecting a book as good as "The Appeal" but this one let me down, especially from the fact that there was no moral to the story that I could understand. It felt just like a bunch of events happening and then it was over. I did like some of the personalities in the book though.
    Dissapointing
The story is good enough while it lasts but I felt that the ending was only half of the tale. Not enough goes on to make this a classic, I certainly couldn't see this making hollywood. It's well written with good dialogue but I felt let down with the ending

Marissa's husband, Bobby Okari, is the charismatic leader of a freedom movement in the volatile west African nation of Luandia, which is being torn apart by the world's craving for its vast supply of oil. Bobby's outspoken opposition to the exploitation of his homeland by PetroGlobal - a giant American oil company with close ties to Luandia's brutal government - has enraged General Savior Karama, the country's autocratic ruler.
After Bobby leads a protest rally during a full eclipse of the sun, everyone in his home village is massacred by government troops. And now Bobby has been arrested and charged with the murder of three PetroGlobal workers. Still drawn to Marissa, Pierce agrees to defend Bobby, hoping to save both Bobby and Marissa from almost certain death. But the lethal politics of Luandia may cost Pierce his life instead.
Culminating in a dramatic show trial and a desperate race against time, Eclipse combines a thrilling narrative with a vivid look at the human cost of the global lust for oil. Here is Richard North Patterson at his compelling best, confirming his place as our most provocative author of popular fiction.

    Edge of your seat read
Excellent book with an incredible & timely story. Not done with it yet. Hard to put down.
    exiting novel
This is an exiting novel picking up the present economical/political issue. The author being inspired by the real tragic events in Nigeria, when the American oil companies temporarily set back from the development in that area. I never imagined it "had become inextricably entangled in a nightmare of our creation that we lacked the power to end," though "I believe the world is the sum of who's in it - that in some way what we do makes other lives better, or worse." Facing with scarceness of oil and global blame to the oil companies for their excess consumption, American oil companies are shifting their operational base to Africa again. Would like to join Damon Pierce in enjoin the American oil companies from participating in killing freedom of African people by closely checking up-to-date events there.Exile

Richard North Patterson knows how to write and keep the reader hooked. Hard to put the book down, especially towards the end. Well-written. Highly recommended.
    AWESOME!!
My Mom suggested that I read this book & she doesn't do that all that often anymore. At the beginning, I thought oh yeah. this is a good book but it wasn't all that much. But when you get into the middle of the book, it keeps getting better & better & then... when you get toward the end... you just can't turn the pages fast enough..or else you are re-reading each page. I hope that you find the book as great as I did. ENJOY!

I'm very pleased with the audio book. It's a great addition to my own audio library. I'm disabled, & can't make it to my town library anymore. So, I have been using Amazon to build my own library with the audio's I want at a good price. I love this author. The CD's are clean & play great. I would order from this seller again, & also recommend the seller to family & friends.

    Amazing!
This is an amazing debut in the legal thriller genre. Actually, and fortunately, it's more legal than thriller, which means it moves forward based on compelling and believable plot rather than chases, shootouts, etc. The trial process is quite realistic as are all the characters. The prosecutors aren't one-dimensional enemies looking to convict the innocent; they are realistic prosecutors doing a realistic job. Ditto the judge; he's not a hanging judge. He's a judge who wants to get it right as best he can, like so many in real life. The thrill element does exist, but it's not overwhelming. I'm also glad that we;'re not burdened with a lot of boredom about unresolved father issues, as is the case with so many fictional lawyer protagonists.
I don't want to give things way; suffice it to say this is an audio book you will enjoy if you appreciate this genre.

    Editorial Reviews:
This dark thriller from Australia's first lady of crime follows an ambitious Sydney lawyer, Cass Meredith, tapped to head a state investigation into a child pornography ring. The detective assigned to assist her has criminal tendencies himself, and the further in to the case Cass gets, the darker things become. Soon even her eight-year-old son, Mozz, is threatened. Listeners will enjoy Lord's vivid writing and the plot's dramatic twists and turns, while performer Richard Aspel has a knack for conveying the dramatic intensity of the scenes.

    One of the very best!
I've read many, many novels, mostly thrillers, and this ranks among the very best. On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give it a 10. It's first a really great story, told in the first person by someone who is very good at the job he is hired to do in the plot. A few reviews say his language is too crude or rough or some such. Nonsense. He tells the story in a logical and methodical fashion with an appropriate choice of language. I first read this book a number of years ago and kept my copy. I ran across it yesterday, and I decided to read it again, not something I often do. I couldn't put it down until I finished it again. The guy who said it took him two months to read either had an awful lot of other things on his plate or he's a moron. The story grabs you and you're with the protagonist/narrator every step of the way. You like the "good guys," and you dislike the "bad guys," so the authors must have done his job. I wish that Mr. Topor had some other offerings, but he does not. I thank him mightily for this one. If you like a great detective story, you'll thank me for recommending this book.
    Five Stars
    Outstanding book.
looking for out of print books, Amazon may be the place to find them.
    Great Book
    Dated and trite.
I was given this book by my neighbor, probably because I am a Viet-Nam vet and this book, to him, "tells it like it is/was". Not bloody likely. I guess we have John Grisham to blame for perpetuating the "tough-guy" lawyer canon, wherein brave attorneys battle for truth, justice and the American way. Again, highly unlikely. This book reads like a screenplay, with a tough, rogue lawyer, turned private investigator, who takes no guff from those big corporate types that still seem to hunt him down to give him jobs. From what I have read so far, he also "makes a pot of coffee" every chance he gets. This "legal thriller" is a bit dated, with references to diskettes and floppies (There's just no "tough" way to say the word "floppies", is there?) and women pulling out "compacts" to fix their make-up after weeping openly over one of our hero's stories. This, while our hero sweats profusely at the dinner table. Might be all those "pots of coffee". Now, let's get down to business. I am a former Marine, diagnosed with 100% PTSD. Mr. Topor's portrayal of Viet-Nam veterans is appalling. In my opinion, he watched every bad " 'Nam movie" ever made and based his version of a veteran and/or Viet-Nam on that crap. The symptoms displayed in the book are most often seen in "wannabe" veterans to show how "disturbed" they are/ were by what they "went through". I attend several group sessions a month and have never heard gibberish like what I just read. However, if you would like to observe "seething rage", please drop by.
