    Publisher's Summary:
Why does a wealthy Scottish financier set up a drugs deal with the IRA? Jeopardise his career, endanger his family and lover by tangling with the East End underworld and a ruthless mercenary? The motive is simple: revenge for a cold-blooded act of murder. His adversary is a dangerous gangland boss whose connections stretch from the Highlands to London and beyond. More than a match for a newcomer, especially when his plans contain a fatal flaw, which will be discovered only when it is much too late

    an interesting little tale
this was the first book Stephen Leather wrote (way back in 1987!). Since then, he has grown to become, in my view, one of the best thriller writers currently writing. It is interesting to read his first ever book and to see how the author has developed his style over subsequent books. even at this early stage in his career, Leather demonstrates his ability to present the reader with well-drawn and likeable charictors. While this tale of revenge set in London and Scotland doesn't have the tight plotting that we'd come to expect from his current work it is still a fun little tale.
    Different style.
Different style to his usual work, but reasonable, and worth listening to. Gave it 4 stars as I prefer his usual style.
    filling time
a lot of pointless woffel as if you are filling time. not one of the best books that I have bought
    Good story, poor reading
This is an exciting story with plenty of thrills which moves at a great pace. However I deducted a star because of the choice of reader. The bulk of the story is told by the 'hero' who, we are told, is an educated Scottish financier. So why does he sound like an Essex boy with a complete inability to pronounce the Scottish words and place names? Given the right story this reader would be fine but this was the wrong book for him.

    Stan Turner Mysteries #5
I received a free copy of this book through Goodreads First Reads in exchange for a fair review.
The fifth book in the Stan Turner Mysteries and the second book I have read in the series is one of those books one canât put down, yet doesnât want it to end since it is so entertaining and suspenseful. The story that flows well and the somewhat quirky characters are complex and multi-faceted. Unlike many legal thrillers, this book doesnât have one but three legal thrillers developing at the same time, and they are interwoven beautifully. It doesnât have any graphic violence, vulgar language, or explicit sex, but it focuses on the charactersâ inner worlds and interpersonal relationships in a relatable and believable way. The book is as entertaining, suspenseful, and complex as the books of John Grisham and David Rosenfelt, two of my favorite legal thriller authors. Five stars.
    Deadly
This is a fantastic thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. From page one it gets your attention. You keep wondering what's going to happen next.
This is a fast and edgy thriller. Stan comes home early while cutting his vacation short, after receiving a phone call from Paula. A client he cares about, Dusty, is surrounded by the FBI after allegedly killing an IRS agent that was there to take more of his property.
Stan's other client and friend disappears making him go to Ecuador after leaving a large sum of money in Stan's bank account. No one has heard from him since. To top it off, Stan's partner Paula is involved in a hit and run. Will Stan and Paula be able to work together to find a way to get Dusty off or will it be to much for them to handle ?
This book was a fast paced thriller. I enjoyed this book very much. This was the first book that I have read in the series. I can't wait to read another book in the series.

This is the way that the world ends.....
What did you love best about Afterlight?
It was a great sequel to Last Light and is simply a riveting story. Alex Scarrow has an excellent understanding of how our present way of live is so fragile, being based, as it is, on widespread availability of oil and petrol. He also has a good knowledge of human behaviour.
What did you like best about this story?
It holds your attention, has just the right pacing and its features believable characters and realistic scenarios.
    Which scene was your favorite?
When the preacher/pedophile came to his end.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
I could imagine this being made into a TV series, just like the 2 British based miniseries "Survivor" of the 1970's and 1990's. "AFTERLIGHT - the New Survivors"
    Any additional comments?
The reader is simply amazing, with great pacing, all the right intonations and very accurate accents. One of the best narrators on Audible. ( I have listened to over 100 audio books)
This is a book that any adult could listen to, young or old, especially those who are informed and interested in current world events and political, social, environmental and economic trends. I have read a lot of apocalyptic fiction, and Alex Scarrow's two books are amongst the best. I have recommended it to my husband, aged 62 and to my son, aged 25.
    Thought provoking!
The books first light and after light by Alex Scarrow are two of the best that I have ever read, I have recommended to many friends and they all agree. The story is based on the end of society as we know it, in this case not by the usual virus/zombie outbreak. Therefore making this much more believable and thought provoking. The speed of the collapse and the behaviour of all the characters is extremely frightening, my circle is now definitely more prepared!
    Thought provoking and gripping
Part of me wants to give this book 5 stars, or maybe 4 and half. It takes us to a post (oil) apocalyptic world and follows the stories of a few groups of people trying to survive. It really made me think about what we are doing to the world, how we would survive without the resources we currently have and made me wonder if something like this could really happen the way he describes. It also, paradoxically perhaps, made me more grateful for the things we have and made me resolve to think less about the evils of modern technology as I realise how hard life would be without it all. I am not sure if this is the message the author was going for but this is one of the things I took from it.
I hold back on 5 stars just because of some of the writing.

    A Highly Entertaining Legal Thriller
Stan Turner has never handled a murder trial, but when the father of a college girl accused of killing her baby insist he represent her, he reluctantly agrees assuming he can enlist his law professor to help out. His law professor, who is known as "Snake," turns out to be more trouble than he's worth and Stan ends up pretty much on his own. While Stan struggles to find out who actually killed Sarah's baby he is distracted by a wrongful death suit, a religious fanatic known as Doomsayer and an overzealous media. I loved the non-stop action, ingenious plot twists, and the shocking but delightful ending. And, of course, Jeffrey Kafer's reading was smooth and professonal as always.
    POSSIBLY THE WORST
One must be successful regarding three major elements to produce a worthy audio book. An interesting story well plotted, stylish prose with adept dialogue and a skilled reader. This book does fine with the story line. It is clever and complex enough to keep one awake.
But that is where this book ends its search for entertainment and credibility. The prose is stilted, unrealistic, as flat as the great American plain and it appears to be written by a twelve year-old. The dialogue is insipid, a(as in "un")lyrical, and as unrealistic and palatable as the creationist's trump card. Then the "reader" (sic). Mono-toned, inflections and emphasis in all the wrong places and I was certain he had not seen the book prior to recording day. In his defense, the text was about as lyrical as a bag pipe in the hands of a novice. So, other than being prosaic and platitudinous, it did not have much going for it.
Thank God (sic) it was not laced with proselytizing and sub-currents of religious blather ;-)
Seriously, interesting plot line, poorly written and read.

    Publisher's Summary:
The second gripping novel from the author of The Coroner.
Two young British students, Nazim Jamal and Rafi Hassan vanish without a trace. The police tell their parents that the boys had been under surveillance, that it was likely they left the country to pursue their dangerous new ideals. Seven years later, Nazims grief-stricken mother is still unconvinced. Jenny Cooper is her last hope.
Jenny is finally beginning to settle into her role as Coroner for the Severn Valley; the ghosts of her past that threatened to topple her, banished to the sidelines once more. But as the inquest into Nazim's disappearance gets underway, the stink of corruption and conspiracy becomes clear ...
As the pressure from above increases, a code of silence is imposed on the inquest and events begin to spiral out of all control, pushing Jenny to breaking point. For how could she have known that by unravelling the mysteries of the disappeared, she would begin to unearth her own buried secrets?

This is the third in the Jenny Cooper (coroner) series. It has kept up the suspense pretty well. I'll be getting the next one on Kindle.
    Another in a good series
Once again an interesting and gripping yarn. While quite remarkable the characters are yet almost believable. The story holds your attention throughout.
    Keeps me wanting
Ive really got my teeth into these Jenny Cooper books. I keep wanting to know how she gets on with her life after each case. makes you wonder how you'd be if you had to do a dreadful job like this.
    Five Stars
Damn good! Downloaded more of this aurthor and have enjoyed them too. Thanks
    An incredibly disappointing second book
First Sentence: During her six months as coroner for the Severn Vale District, Jenny Cooper had known only a handful of corpses remain unidentified for more than a day or two.
Coroner Jenny Cooper is contacted by the mother of a British Muslim student for a formal inquest on her son. He, and his friend, both disappeared from their college dorm rooms seven years' ago. The authorities claim they went to Afghanistan for terrorist training and failed to do a thorough investigation. Jenny also has a unidentified Jane Doe in the morgue whose body is stolen but traces of radioactivity left behind. How are the two cases linked and why are the authorities trying so hard to suppress the inquest?
It is very difficult when you really like an author's first book, yet find their second book so disappointing. What worked well in Hall's first book, "The Coroner," seemed to come completely undone here.
The protagonist, Jenny Cooper, moved from being a woman finding strength in spite of her issues, to an insipid, woman influenced and overwhelmed by everyone; her son, her clerk, her sometimes boyfriend, the police and some rather mysterious lawyer. Rather than being sympathetic, I found her annoying. At times, disability notwithstanding, her behavior was so unconscionable it wasn't even excusable by being fictional.
None of the characters were fully developed. Worse yet, I found I didn't care about or feel connected to any of them. The only exception was the boy's mother, Mrs. Jamal, and she was poorly used by the story.
There was a sense of place but not strong enough to give me a visual sense of where the story occurred.

    Brilliant
This ranks up there as one of the best books I have ever read. (and i have downloaded hundreds of Audible books)It is clever, engaging, sensitive and the dialogue is excellent. There are subtle dilemmas and the whole story is believable. I am sure that people downloading this will not be disappointed. It is classic Turow.
    Kept me on tenter-hooks!
I had just read the page-turning prequel (Presumed Innocent) to this book, which I would recommend doing as you will enjoy Innocent even more. The latter takes up the life lawyer Rusty Sabich twenty years later. Most of the book is taken up by a blow by blow account of a trial for murder and though this is done in minute detail I was kept rapt by the roller-coaster of twists and turns as the weight of evidence flips repeatedly from the prosecution to the defence. It's not just a gripping legal case full of suspense but also a study of relationships with well-defined characters who relate events from different perspectives.
If you like forensic legal thrillers you'll enjoy this book.
    Unturnoffable!
Don't start listening to this if you have much else planned. It grips!
    Subtle and mature thriller writing
This is a wonderfully crafted novel from an author at the top of his game. The 20 years which have passed since the original Presumed Innocent can be felt on every page, not just in terms of the weight of time felt my the main protagonists, but also in the quality, depth and subtelty of Turow's writing. The narration is also pitch perfect, making this one of the best books I've downloaded from Audible in all the years I've been a subscriber.

Lisa Fremont is a rising young lawyer gifted with a brilliant mind, natural beauty - and an alluring sensuality. A newly hired law clerk on the staff of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Truitt, Lisa has a bright future. She also has a past that her curriculum vitae doesn't reveal....
Long before she was Lisa Fremont, Esquire, she was Angel, an underage stripper in San Francisco's Tiki Club. And long before Max Wanaker was president of Atlantica Airlines, he was the wealthy benefactor who took her off the streets. Max, who knew a good bet when he saw it, took his angel far with a devil of a deal - and now, he's calling in the debt.
Three years ago, on its approach to Miami International, Atlantica Flight 640 crashed, claiming hundreds of lives and sparking a multimillion-dollar legal battle that is about to come before the Supreme Court. The swing vote belongs to Sam Truitt, and Max is depending on Lisa's expertise in the art of persuasion to save Atlantica. Lisa knows there's only one way to get Justice Truitt's vote: put aside her passion for justice and get into Truitt's life, into his head - and into his bed.
In the Machiavellian maze of political intrigue and personal betrayal that is the Supreme Court, Lisa Fremont and Sam Truitt could make one hell of a legal team. But inside the hidden sanctums of the halls of justice, there's only one rule to live by: stay one step ahead of those who live by no law at all.

9 Scorpions requires a suspension of belief
Not even in Bill Clinton's Washington does this story line make sense, and more's the pity as I am a big Paul Levine fan. Sam Truitt who has already been burned as a college professor by sleeping with a co-ed and then giving her a C grade, ("Next time Sam, give her an A and spare me the embarrassment", says his wife) is confirmed as a Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. He has hardly had a chance to try out his chair when the Chief, a fire breathing "right wing conservative" advises that he is just waiting for Sam to give his followers a chance to remove him. So, against that background Sam hires the sexiest ex-stripper ever to graduate from Stanford as one of his law clerks. However, she is a double agent as she has been put up to applying to be the judge's law clerk by the President of Atlantica Airlines (Max). He is the guy who rescued her from her life of sin while making her his mistress. Then, during a down period in that relationship, she was falling in love with and sleeping with the Chief Pilot of Atlantica (Tony). Unfortunately, Tony the Pilot is at the controls of Flight 610 when the tail engine disintegrates and the plane crashes in The Everglades with all lives lost. A law suit is brought against the company. It's insurance company is insolvent so the airline will have to pay the damages, if any are awarded. Lisa, the law clerk, is convinced by her former lover that there was a terrorist bomb on the plane and getting "her Justice" to vote for the airline is the right thing to do.(It really was lousy maintainance) Sound complicated?? You bet. Believable?? No way!! Then throw in the Japanese Mafia being the de facto owners of the airline and employing one of the most disgusting thugs ever concocted to see that "justice is done" and you have even more layers of disbelief to wade through.

    Members Reviews:
    An Excellent Read
I really recommend this - an excellent read with an engaging heroine and very good plot. Very well read by Sian Thomas - don't miss it!
    Justice
This was a good story and I am going to keep track of M. R. Hall who seems to write a murder story with a twist. The coroner is normally consigned to a brief mention in most detective story but here takes centre stage.
The coroner battles with a complex situation, her personal problems and sexual prejudice amongst other things. I was rooting for her and was glad she stuck with it.
An excellent, entertaining story and was well read.
    Oh dear
This started off promisingly - a new woman coroner with personal problems who nevertheless sets about investigating two cases left by her predecessor. For two-thirds of the book I was with her as she gradually uncovered bits and pieces of evidence in those cases with the help of her ex-detective coroner's officer. Sadly, it became too overblown as her anger with pretty much everyone and everything boiled over. That rather spoilt the tension of the court scenes, which were otherwise interesting, as the tension arose from the worry about whether she would hold it together.
We know from the outset that she is seeing a therapist and that there is some trauma buried deep in her memory from her childhood. She has had a nervous breakdown and has left her previous job in family law to take up this new post. This is to be a fresh start for her after her divorce.
Unfortunately, she degenerates from pill-popping and being almost in control of her anger to borderline psychotic with suicidal tendencies. I could just about suspend disbelief so far as to accept that she was appointed in the first place but was amazed she was able to stay in her job for any length of time.
The baddies have no light and shade. There are some characters who have their feet on the ground (sadly not the coroner herself) who offer some blessed moments of calm.
The narration is excellent. I have given it three stars as, despite the unease I felt about the central character, it was an interesting story but I don't think I want to spend any more time in the company of Jenny Cooper. I found myself hoping that the villager with whom she develops a friendship runs a mile as she is poison!
    enjoyable listen
its a bit slow to start, but good once it gets going, didn't really know a Coroner could do the investigating, some of it seems a bit unlikely, but it is well read and you are willing the heroine to do well. Moves at a good pace and no confusing legal jargon
the coroner. loved it had to stay up to finish i i
all of it was memorable. the narrator was very good I was able to understand every word thst was said.

After listening for two hours, I could take no more. I hate that I bought two books in this series. I would surely have purchased neither if the previous reviewers comments had been posted. I'll NEVER buy another book that has not been reviewed.
This is a shame because the premise of the story was interesting and William Manchee is probably a good writer. I might look for the book at the library & read it the old fashioned way.
    Terrible reading
This is the worst reading of an audiobook I've ever encountered. William Timnick sounds like he's so concerned about pronouncing each word correctly that he completely forgets to include any inflection. The result is a completely robotic reading. And his voices for the characters are so poorly done that I had trouble keeping track of who was supposed to be speaking. It actually sounds like it could be an interesting story, but the reading is so terrible that it's hard to tell, and impossible to enjoy.
    terrible reading, good story
The performance was so unappealing I almost didn't finish the book. The only thing that kept me going was the interesting story. I wish I had read the book instead.
    BORING!
If you can get past the reader, it might have been a good story. It sounds like someone tried to have a computer read the book. Each word is so precisely enunciated, not like a person telling you a story. Consequently the flow of the story is all chopped up. I also didn't like the use of "Oh God" and "Oh Jesus" every other sentence. It was disrespectful and totally unnecessary. I stopped listening after the first half hour. Don't waste your credits on this one.
    A Fine Reader
Ive listened to hundreds of audio books and William Timnick is right up there with the best of them. He has many different voices that make it easy to distinguish one character from another and is quite pleasing to listen to. I dont understand those who criticized him so harshly, particularly when they could have listened to an excerpt before they made the purchase.
