    great Teffinger novella
This novella- size Teffinger thriller is well-written and, being somewhat shorter, it is not confusing. A killer contacts Teffinger through a legal reporter and through two attorneys and conveys that he will kill victim 25 on Wednesday. The reporter happens to be a gorgeous woman and Teffinger and her try to find the killer before he strikes. I have enjoyed all of the Teffinger novels that I have read. They are fast paced thrillers and read quickly.
    Short and not sweet
This is a good read. The plot developed beautifully and escalates as the story processes. The conclusion is not what you would expect. Actually, this could be a much longer story. There was plenty that was glossed over that could have been used to develop the plot.
    always enjoyable
The Nick Teffinger books are always enjoyable. They are quick reads. My only complaint is that many of the stories seem to be repeats of the same formula. You are never surprised in the stories. But I like the characters.
    Confidential Prey
The story was very good. The Nick Teffinger stories are easy to read and keeps your interest. Confidential Prey was exciting to read and it was difficult to put the book down.
    Too short
Found it to be too short. Not so thrilling or surprising. Need more to build up suspense. Don't know what else to say.

Criminal defense attorney Harrison J. Walker, better known as Jaywalker, has just been suspended for using "creative" tactics and receiving "gratitude" in the courtroom stairwell from a client charged with prostitution. Convincing the judge that his other clients are counting on him, Jaywalker is allowed to complete 10 cases. But it's the last case that truly tests his abilities - and his acquittal record.
Samara Moss - young, petite, and sexy as hell - stabbed her husband in the heart. Or so everyone believes. Having married the elderly billionaire when she was an 18-year-old former prostitute, Samara appears to be the clichéd gold digger. But Jaywalker knows all too well that appearances can be deceiving. Who else could have killed the billionaire? Has Samara been framed? Or is Jaywalker just driven by his need to win his clients' cases - and this particular client's undying gratitude?

    Too Much WOE IS ME
200 pages of the main character lamenting on how there was no way he could win his case. He doesnt have to keep telling us. Enough already! If its that bad why should I keep reading! Stop beating me over the head with your despair just to show me how brilliant you are at the end. That just sucked all the drama out. And, WAAAAY too many words. Could have been 70 pages shorter. But, finally the last 50 pages or so got the story moving along. Good ending.
Very Enjoyable Book; Ending Leaves a Little to Be Desired
This book grabbed ahold of me on page one and didn't let go. I finished it in a number of hours to the exclusion of almost every other activity over the Labor Day weekend. I love court thrillers, with all their "I objects" and "if it please the court" dialog. I love the way the trials zig and zag and know that there will be surprises along the way. And it seems, nobody does it better than Teller. His legal knowledge is formidable and his ability to weave it into a compelling plot is impressive. The main characters -- Jaywalker and Semara Moss -- are memorable and realistic. The only thing that bothered me was the ending, about which I'll not go into detail. It's not that the ending was terrible -- it just didn't measure up to what I deem a very strong, very riveting plot. Teller, on the basis of the two novels of his that I have read, has become one of my favorite authors. If you like courtroom dramas, he's your man.
A great story of the courtroom
This is My first Joseph Teller book and it wont be the last.
The story was good and very well told. The characters are believable and the story could have happened in real life.
Samaras life has been hell, until she meets her sugardaddy. But it all turns to S#$!& when She marries Him.
Result???? The husband is murdered. (of course). Samara is arrested for His murder,But here comes Jaywalker.
The resulting courtcase is great. It is at times very funny and at times sad.
The ending is very surprising, which I didn't see coming.
Why Jaywalker didn't just spend the rest of His life representing Prostitutes is beyond Me.
I recommend this book to all.
    A stunning read!
Another Teller hit! I have read many "lawyer novels" but I can honestly say that this ending absolutely stunned me. Without giving away too much of the story, this is about the murder of a billionaire by his very young wife, who appears to be the only suspect.

    Publisher's Summary:
Harrison J. Walker - Jaywalker, to the world - is a frayed-at-the-edges defense attorney with a 90-percent acquittal rate, thanks to an obsessive streak a mile wide. But winning this case will take more than just dedication.
Seventeen-year-old Jeremy Estrada killed another boy after a fight over a girl: shot him point-blank between the eyes. No one disputes those facts. This kid is jammed up big-time, but almost unable to help himself. He's got the face of an angel but can hardly string together three words to explain what happened that day...yet he's determined to go to trial.
All they've got is a "yesbut" defense, as in: "Did you kill him?" "Yes, but..." Jaywalker is accustomed to bending the rules - this case will stretch the law to the breaking point and beyond.

Was this book good - Yes but........
It was also - God awful. That's my response to this idea that this is the best "yeah but" book ever. I will write this review without spoilers. You already have the premise in the book description. A kid was picked on and he killed the other kid. If you feel even slightly sympathetic toward the Columbine high school killers because they weren't accepted and picked on - Then this is your book. I am not sympathetic toward them. Just like the kid in this book - They weren't raped or tortured or any of the horrible things that might tip the scales into understanding why people justify the actions of some troubled kid. You're not a good parent if you aren't involved with your kids enough to know what's going on. Or you don't care enough. Or you stopped telling your kids no because you don't want them affected by negative responses. I can tell you that I wasn't the coolest kid in school & I got picked on - But I choose to do positive things. Not plot the death of other kids. Joseph Teller tried to indicate through Jaywalker - That we should feel ultimate empathy toward such an individual. What number of people killed do we stop being empathetic - If 1 is o.k. - How about 3? Do we stop when they become a serial killer? Even if this book wasn't so sad - On a moral level. It was horribly written. You ever listen to a really good joke - But it took like 5 minutes to tell and by the end it - It got awkward because the punchline was so far away. This is that joke - Except - It's not a good one.... This book was sooooo drawn out. Maybe like this review LOL. Wrapping up - The main character Jaywalker was not even close to being as funny as he thought he was. He was very effeminate at times. I don't know who he's trying to relate to - But as a man - It wasn't me & I can cry with the best of them.
    For what it's worth - J
Easy to follow, easy to love.
    Any additional comments?
The best part about the jaywalker series, in my opinion, is that it is so easy to get into. As always I was immediately captivated and I just wanted to keep listening until it was over. Though the author seems to put the main character up on a pedestal, the story always delivers and Again, I found myself almost brought to tears by the compelling and theatrical ending of the case. The jaywalker series also never seems to be overly complex, and i still never find myself bored of the story.

I loved much of this book
I loved much of this book. The trial was gripping, and there were ever so many possibilities likely to occur along the way. However the climax / latter part of the novel fell away in a disappointing manner, in my view. A good read, but spoiled by its diversion away from the court.
Somebody else must have written the last 15%
I have read all of Sydney Bauers books and loved them all until this one. It starts wonderfully and is a great read with terrific characters and legal strategies. The story is terrific and then... The plot turns haywire. The baddies ( David Hunt the evil financier and the former secretary of the evil fertility expert ) suddenly turn out to be undercover agents, the evil person behind the evil plot to develop genetically-bred babies and flog them off to wealthy parents can't be named. The arch-villain, Roger Katz (the Self-serving DA) comes out of the whole plot with a victory and smile. I was very very disappointed.
I just wonder if Sydney got sick or died and somebody else wrote it?
Hopefully he will recover his health ( if that was the case) and we will get his good stuff again.
    Jim
Her latest but not her best
I have read all of Sydney Bauer's earlier books and thoroughly enjoyed them. Although Bauer is Australian, her books are set in Boston and feature a young and very smart defense attorney David Cavanaugh who with the help of his friends (including a local homicide detective) solves and wins otherwise unwinnable cases.
Bauer's background in production of crime TV series has helped her write exciting and page turning legal practice stories where it is difficult to guess how things will go until the last few pages. This book continues to display Bauer's writing and character skills, but this time the finale is a bit too far fetched for my imagination.
Bauer will remain on my favourite author list and I hope that the finale of her next book in the David Cavanaugh series is more believable than this one.
    Good Read
I've had this book on my Kindle for ages and never really fancied reading it for some reason. It was actually a very good read, with plenty of twists, and stories within stories to keep me entertained. I'm going back to start at book one now. The characters are good, the story line was intriguing. I found the writing style a bit odd at times, but all in all very entertaining.

Let me throw water on the fire
I downloaded this book partly because all the reviews were 5 stars. I'm about half way through the book now and had to share my amazement at the prior reviews. I checked the "See all my reviews" for all 5 reviewers and the total books reviewed was 57. ALL 57 WERE RATED AT 5 STARS. You can think what you like, but I am very suspicious, do they all work for the publisher??
I may or may not finish the book, probably will, but I'm disappointed so far. There are WAY too many characters introduced in the book. I stopped counting after 30 characters were mentioned in less than half the book. Who can keep track of 30 characters with the scenes jumping around from one set of characters to to another.
I am not a book reviewer and this may be my first one. If my review helps anyone, good. Unless you have an amazing memory and can juggle 30 names in your head, you likely will not enjoy this one.
UPDATE - I finished the book and regret even starting it. The flood of characters continued in the second half, albeit at a reduced rate. My total count was 42. The ending was, like the book, ordinary, confusing, and dull. I cannot fathom anyone honestly giving this one 5 stars.
STAY AWAY FROM THIS ONE !!!!
Amazon was right to send mail I might be interested in this book.
After reading several of Jaggers books and always found myself waiting for the next
one. Well, let me tell you, this one "Lawyers Kill" was beyond my greatest expectations.
Just when I thought I had read the best, RJ out did himself with Nick, this time he
showed different sides of Nick, when Nick let himself do something he knew was wrong
but his intentions were good, he could not allow himself to use the information.
You will have to read the book and see for your self what I am referring to. The
ending was spellbinding and I am still at odds as to exactly what happened. I guess
we will have to wait and see if RJ comes up with another book and just maybe we will
find out. I don`t think any of you will be disappointed in reading Lawyers Kill.
    Beware, Fake Reviews!
This publisher is defrauding Amazon and Amazon's customers. He writes and publishes really weak, poorly edited books, then pumps them up using fake reviews. Unable to create a quality product, his only way to succeed is to scam people with these ridiculous 5-star reviews. Look at his other books, and you'll start to see the same reviewers over and over. Look at what else the reviewers have reviewed, and you'll see that in many cases they review only this publisher's books and nothing else.
Nick Teffinger, the 34 year old head of Denver's homicide department ....
Nick Teffinger like you've never seen him before! There's another serial in town, though he's on the FBI's radar they're not interested in coming out to lend a hand.

    Publisher: Random House Audio
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Legal Thrillers
    Publisher's Summary:
They call him the Blood Bath Killer - a man who has now killed two Boston women by sneaking into their homes, filling the bathtub with their blood, and making off with their bodies. And everything suggests that he's poised to strike again.
Out to stop him are two good cops - Detective Angel Alves and his hard-driven boss, Sergeant Wayne Mooney - and waiting in the wings to provide justice is a team of young prosecutors led by Assistant District Attorney Conrad Darget. His team, a Homicide Response Team featuring attorneys handpicked by the DA to represent the office at all murder scenes, is managed by the dedicated Liz Moore and consists of a diverse group, from the erudite but troubled Mitch Beaulieu to the aggressive but so-far-unsuccessful Nick Costa to the hard-working and principled Brendan Sullivan.
But as the bodies continue to disappear, the case becomes more personal, difficult, and dangerous for everyone involved. First, a victim turns out to be a childhood friend of Alves's. Then, it becomes clear that the only connection between victims is time spent on juries at the South Bay District Courthouse - the Homicide Response Team's headquarters - which means that the killer is among them.
A gripping first novel distinguished by breakneck pacing, accessible prose, and intriguing detail of the world of criminal law, Eight in the Box will thrill all fans of commercial suspense.
    Critic Reviews:
Raffi Yessayans Eight in the Box is an awesome, chilling legal thriller. It took me back to the days when I was chasing down the darker elements with Eddie Egan and Sonny Grosso while researching and writing The French Connection. Yessayan may be the best prosecutor-turned-crime-writer to hit the streets since George V. Higgins and Scott Turow. ( Robin Moore, author of The French Connection and The Set Up)
With its superb dead-on dialogue and criminal procedure so authentic I felt as if I had slipped under crime-scene tape and disappeared into an underworld meant only for cops and killer, Eight in the Box had me hooked and on the edge of my seat from page one. This is one of the most shocking and accurate crime novels ever written. (Andrew McAleer, professor of crime fiction, Boston College, and author of Mystery Writing in a Nutshell)
If you enjoy baffling murders investigated by credible, indelible homicide detectives and prosecutors, youre going to love Eight in the Box. A onetime assistant district attorney in Boston, Raffi Yessayan conveys both an air of authenticity and a sense of dedication in describing the men and women who must speak for the dead'. This is a wonderful debut crime novel. (Jeremiah Healy, author of The Only Good Lawyer and Turnabout)
    Members Reviews:
    Very disappointing
I was actually really excited to read this book, as I love a good crime novel set in Boston. Maybe it was my level of excitement that contributed to the deep disappointment i felt after being done (and while reading it). The only redeeming aspect of the book was Yessayan's obvious expert knowledge of legal issues and criminal procedure, gained from his experience as a prosecutor in Boston. However, although he might be very familiar with the city of Boston and its neighborhoods, he failed to capture the essence of the city for the reader. This novel could have been set in any other city by simply changing the names of the neighborhoods with no impact on the story line or the "feel" of the novel.

    Publisher's Summary:
A riveting, blistering hot novel about the shady side of the law and the business side of the Boston underworld by the one and only George V. Higgins.
Jerry Fein is a small-time lawyer, occasional booking agent, and full-time slumlord. But hes nobodys fool. So when the tenants of his dilapidated buildings refuse to pay rent because of rats, Jerry knows just the man to help him: Leo Proctor, a professional arsonist, who can make a fire marshal look the other way for a little cash. But the heat is on over at the police station as well, and a couple of cops are suddenly feeling pressure from their superiors to produce, and something has got to give.
Full of hardnosed cops and lawyers a little too familiar with both sides of the law, The Rat on Fire is another Higgins masterpiece and an unflinching portrait of the Boston crime world.

    Rat on Fire
A typical Higgins story although not his best. I've read most of Higgins books and wasn't aware of this one until it popped up in an Amazon email. Although not his best it's still a pretty good read. As Higgins said, he doesn't write mysteries, he writes crime stories and this is a crime story. It's a slice of life type story with no real heroes but just tells what happens. Slum landlord pays arsonist to burn down his rent controlled apartment building which is losing him money. Most of the tenants don't pay their rent and they can't be evicted. Do they not pay rent because he doesn't keep the place maintained or are they deadbeats who don't take care of the apartments. Not entirely clear cut and could be both. Anyway, the fire is set and someone dies so now it's murder/manslaughter and there's no winners.

George V. Higgins is a great American writer whose mastery of story telling through dialogue is lyrical and paints a vivid picture of his characters. He unfortunately died relatively young but had a very productive life and he is not appreciated as much as he deserves. Check him out~~
