Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Legal Thrillers
    Publisher's Summary:
False Prophet, a Legal Thriller is a gritty insider's confession and rant against the corruption of our legal system. The author practiced law in Indianapolis for 30 years.
Jack Ross loses his soul but finds redemption representing an evangelical African American preacher. Jack's downward spiral begins with his idealistic but doomed defense of his best friend and colleague. It becomes an existential crisis. His wife leaves. His partner is in alcohol rehab. Jack's struggle to reclaim his professional standing and self-respect is aided by a petty criminal and a hot young reporter. Jack sets out to right the wrongs done to his Christian-prophet client. The pursuit of justice turns up political conspiracy, real estate fraud, kidnapping, and murder. A high price is paid for the truth.
False Prophet reveals the seamy underside of local politics and the legal system in Indianapolis. But it also shows how white folks and African Americans can worship and work together for justice. The love story is one of frustration and self-destruction, but ultimately understanding, reconciliation, renewed intimacy, and a baby.
Jeff Rasley practiced law in Indiana and the federal courts for 30 years. The legal case in the book is inspired by one the author handled. Characters and events are fictional, but based on Rasley's experience of representing clients ranging from Fortune 500 CEOs to crooks and crack heads - the silk stocking and seamy underbelly of law practice in Indy.
    Critic Reviews:
"This gripping legal thriller offers an insight into the workings of the legal profession while abounding in action, class action, intrigue, and passion.... I enjoyed the setting and intimate details of life in Indianapolis, and I especially enjoyed getting an insider's look at the legal system including a lawyer's thought processes and strategies." Sophomoric, Bland, Not the Least Thrilling
I can't say much that is nice about this one, so maybe I should say nothing. In a nutshell, once you have read GOOD legal thrillers, this one doesn't even come close. The lawyers you are supposed to care about are immature, sophomoric boys who still hang on to their high school football days; can't develop the emotional maturity it takes to keep a relationship going unless it is all about their "needs"; and the bad guys are one dimensional characters who come and go in every dime store novel, so it is impossible to be held in suspense about what they will do next.
On top of bad writing, add really bad narration. . . and this one becomes painful. Keep looking if you want a legal thriller. This isn't it.
Truly a page turner, delightful in presentation
What did you love best about False Prophet, a Legal Thriller?
I listened to the Audible addition of False Prophet straight through, with just a break for a few hours sleep. I found it captivating, the story flowing easily, compelling and propelling for a conclusion.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Jack Ross, whose personal story intertwined the plot, exposing role controversies in the professional and personal life of an attorney.
Which character as performed by Lucas Schuneman was your favorite?
The Pastor, perhaps unordained, but certainly called of God.

Title: Off the Record: A Novel Introducing Renee Rose
    Author: Jody Lebel
    Narrator: Robin Kohn Glazer
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 57 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-21-13
    Publisher: Jody E. Lebel
Ratings: 1 of 5 out of 1 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Legal Thrillers
    Publisher's Summary:
How far will they go to get what they want?
Renee Rose was assigned to the newest judge in the 29th Judicial Circuit. Surrounded by murderers, rapists, and thieves (who are almost never in a good mood), at the whim of cranky judges, obnoxious attorneys, and baton-happy guards, being a court reporter is not your average job. At 44, still single 10 years after the divorce, still having fuzzy thoughts about her ex-husband even though she can't stand him, Renee leans hard on black humor to get through her day. In court she's literally surrounded by armed guards, but it isn't such a stretch to think a felon might follow her home one day. And now she has a problem.
A gorgeous but scary guy brought three dozen roses to her apartment, someone left money on her car, and somebody scared her friend so badly that she left town. All of this was weird but rather harmless, until Renee found a dead dog nailed to her front door.
    Somebody wants something. But what?

I'm disappointed because I was rather looking forward to reading this
Hopefully it's just an issue with my device, but the formatting of this was such that I couldn't read past the first few pages. I'll check for updated versions of the text & change my review if there's a change.
I'm disappointed because I was rather looking forward to reading this. :(
    The Formatting Killed it
What I read of this book looked good, but the author had the great idea of formatting it like a court reporter's transcript, complete with numbered lines and page numbers at the top of the page. The heroine is a court reporter. Get it? The transcript format works fine on the printed page, but if you're reading on a Kindle and change the typeface size, you can wind up with a jumble of lines that break at weird places and numbers that don't serve any useful purpose. I read 10% of the book and gave up. It was good, but not good enough that I wanted to struggle deciphering the text.
    Unable to read
The format in which the book was written made it difficult to read so therefore I never read the book. I wanted to because of the summary I read before I purchased it but when it came over every line was numbered and I cannot read books like that. Maybe it was just my Kindle that this happened to, I am not sure, a fluke. Who knows but I cannot read numbered lines unless it is a reference book and is supposed to be like that for I was not expecting that kind of format.
I have had a headache for over 15 yrs and difficult formats or tiny prints worsen the pain, so I avoid things such as this.
    Original Review Revised
My original review made note only of the formatting problems with the book. It was off putting at first, but the story kept me going and I soon found that I liked these characters and the story was believable and engaging. I liked it so much that I got book two and enjoyed it just as much. Give Renee Rose a try - it's definitely worth it. And, the author tells me the electronic book is being reformatted! Read "Off the Record" and "Playing Dead" as well - I think you will find that you are eagerly waiting for the next installment, just like me.
    Funny and true
This book captures the funny part of the life of a court reporter. Jody puts humor in her stories and it was a pleasure to read. I read the book in two days.

The Saberdene Variations by Thomas Gifford
This book was well written with lots of descriptive characterizations, along with that, the reader had to still figure out exactly what was really happening in the plot. It kept me reading it until the end. It had many surprises and twists for a very good read.

    Publisher's Summary:
Abridged and Produced by Jim Brown. Cover Art copyright Daniel Deverell. Recorded and Edited by Gerry Gagnon. Original Score by Michael Creber. Additional Stings by Ross Barrett.
Arthur P. Besterman, criminal lawyer and reformed alcoholic, was the first to go. Counsel to Vancouver's assorted shifters and grifters, Besterman almost always lost his cases. But a recent victory defending a low-life client might be a clue as to why he was bludgeoned to death with a baseball bat. Then someone takes a pot shot at philandering lawyer Brian Pomeroy after he successfully defends a group of highly controversial eco-terrorists. And so the pattern begins.
All of a sudden, lawyers whose clients are less than savory start second-guessing the ethics of their profession. Going to court becomes dangerous, no one wants to be the next on the so-called "Executioner's" hit list.
In a cat-and-mouse game involving the better part of Vancouver's legal community, Pomeroy's firm (the famous Pomeroy, Macarthur, Brovak, and Sage from the best-selling Dance of Shiva) pieces together a puzzle that points to some very disturbing truths about lawyers and the law. As one sleazy lawyer after another disappears, the listener can't help but ponder the wisdom of Shakespeare's dictum, "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers."
    Critic Reviews:
    "A bitingly funny whodunit." (Maclean's)
"A smart, witty book with great characters and a clever plot." (The Globe and Mail)
"An indiscreet and entertaining mystery, that will add to the author's reputation as one of Canada's finest mystery writers." (The Montreal Gazette)

A legal thriller - with a great twist
    Any additional comments?
This is a review of the audio version of Kill All The Lawyers by William Deverell Narrated by Steve Scherf and Beverley Elliott.
I picked up this audiobook on the strength of Needles, which I listened to a few weeks back. That was an interesting book, good enough for me to go and get the other two available on audio.
A lawyer is killed after successfully defending a client in Vancouver. Shortly after, there are a few near misses and then a second lawyer is killed. What started as a tragedy quickly escalates into panic among the Vancouver legal community; someone is taking Shakespeare all too seriously: "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers."
The story follows a series of characters through this period, dealing with all their secrets, including one of the main characters escape to the Caribbean to avoid a divorce suit after his wife discovers his extramarital affair. All of this is done in an entertaining, fun way. I think that Deverell really wanted to write a book in the mystery style of, say, an Agatha Christie. The result is a thoroughly Canadian take, complete with wit and humor, and lawyerly sex escapades thrown in for good measure. The ending had some great twists, an excellent homage to the genre of Christie or Rex Stout.
This book could have been difficult to listen to. It jumps from character to character, locale to locale, and while it may have been easy to follow in print form, listening to it while dodging traffic in a car could have been challenging. The reason that it wasn't is entirely due to the tremendous narration of Steve Scherf.

She's been set up to lose! The 19-year-old man charged with the murder, Damon Powell, is entrapped by a web of circumstantial evidence.
The murder weapon belonged to his father - he admits to having it on his person during the evening in question. He was found by the police in front of the murdered girl's mansion. But he claims to have spent most of the night with another woman, whose name he refuses to give, and there's no hard evidence tying him to the crime - and no motive. Publisher's Summary:
After graduating from Harvard Law with his closest friend John McKedrick, Michael Knight takes a job with his mentor, legendary trial attorney Lex Devlin, while John becomes sole associate of a notorious mob lawyer.
Michael never lost hope that John McKedrick would escape to "cleaner pastures" - until John is murdered in a car bombing bearing the signature of his questionable clientele. How could two friends who were so close have taken such wildly divergent paths?
In the wake of McKedrick's murder, three men who took their own deviating paths will meet for the first time in forty years. Matt Ryan, a priest, Dominic Santangelo, a mafia don, and Lex Devlin put the past aside to focus on a present concern: Dominic's son has been charged with John McKedrick's murder.
At Lex's urging, Michael Knight reluctantly agrees to represent the alleged bomber. In building a defense, Michael is drawn into a high-stakes art fraud that leads him from the seediest parts of Boston to the sophisticated Amsterdam inner sanctum of international crime.
    Members Reviews:
An absurd but well written and entertaining story
The start of this novel was a bit disappointing. In the first book about Michael Knight (Neon Dragon) he is summoned by a powerful man, a judge, to handle the defense of his son who is accused of murder, a crime the father is absolutely sure he didn't commit. This book starts the same way, this time it is a mafia boss who wants the help of Mr Knight and his older partner for the exact same reason. I thought the similarity in these beginnings was a bit lacking in imagination.
But it did't take long to forget all about that, because the story-telling is fast, entertaining and enjoyable. Mr Knight - the name can't be a coincidence - challenges the organized crime in Boston and takes on the Russian Mafia more or less single-handedly, juggling a forgery of a priceless painting and millions of dollars, but of course he has all bases covered, outsmarts everyone and comes out alive and kicking from every encounter with the bad guys. The story really is totally absurd, but never mind - it is well written with a lot of humour.
One reviewer found a religious thread in the story, I didn't, that Mr Knight sometimes sends a quick thank you to God seems rather appropriate after he gets out alive from one dangerous situation after the other!
If you feel like a fun, enjoyable read and don't care whether the story is realistic and credible or not, this is recommended, at the moment the Kindle edition is free so it won't cost you anything to try it.
TWISTS AND TURNS IN EVERY PAGE
This is John F. Dobbyn's second book which features Michael Knight and Lex Devlin as criminal lawyers. The first being Neon Dragon. While I was glad I had read Neon Dragon previously, Frame Up is a stand alone story. It continues the relationship between a young lawyer and his older father figure-mentor. The book has such an intricate story line that at times I'd flip back to read and more firmly grasp just what the heck was going on. Mr. Dobbyn has a keen sense of humor which can be seen in Michael's conversations with himself and I would find myself laughing out loud or just smiling.
The story takes you from the streets and crime Mobs of Boston, to Amsterdam and London and back. There is never a dull page and has action and violence galore. The perfect book if you love this genre.

Miami in June: it's raining, it's pouring, but the life of criminal defense attorney Mary Magruder Katz is anything but boring - especially when she gets caught up in a whirlwind of three different cases.
Judge Liz Maxwell's job, sanity, and reputation are at stake, and she needs Mary to ferret out wrongdoing in Miami's courts. Solving this case won't just mean going out on a limb; it will mean risking life and limb.

Three cases. One Mary. One torrential downpour of turmoil. Can she weather the storm? Ride out the cold front that settles over her once-hot romance? Salvage what remains of her - and her clients' - reputations? For Mary Magruder Katz, this month's forecast calls for trouble.
    Members Reviews:
Gotta give it 5 stars! Well written, well balanced and interesting
I thoroughly enjoyed this whodunit and found none of the formatting or punctuation problems others have complained about. Clearly, they have been corrected.I liked protagonist Mary Magruder Katz and all the people surrounding her who appeared just enough to be interesting, but not enough to detract from the main plot.
Mary is an attorney in Miami, FL where everyone has some minority blood in their veins. Mary has gotten involved with two major cases and one minor one, which carry the always interesting and often exciting plot through to the final page. One case involves a local judge who is suspected of leniency and possible collusion with drug offenders and whose career is on the line. The other, handed to her almost by accident, concerns a young man from Argentina rendered incommunicado by the Justice Department and Homeland Security on suspicion that he is a terrorist. The third comes when her boyfriend, a home developer, is sued because he is behind schedule in building some high-end condos. Mary has her work cut out for her and manages to deal with Miami weather, which in June means rain and more rain, as well as with threats against her life and limb.
This book was a fun read!
Fast-paced book but not stellar writing
I downloaded the Kindle version of this book to pass the time and it did just that. The story was interesting and I enjoyed the courtroom scenes and legal issues. Some of the dialogue is stilted, though, with many passages being downright awkward. I don't know if it's the Kindle version or what, but wow, there were a lot of annoying punctuation errors! It wasn't a terribly exciting book, but I wanted to keep reading and I ordered the prequal - so that brought my review up to four stars.
    Quick read, enjoyable characters
I really enjoyed Justice in June. Mary Magruder Katz is my new favorite female attorney protagonist. She's smart, energetic, and respected among her colleagues. She does a great job juggling new and former boyfriends. This book moves at a rapid pace. I'm looking forward to reading more books in this series. I'd love to see this novel turned into a movie.

Well constructed story. Fun and interesting to read.

    Book review
Absolutely loved it. So many twists and turns in the story plot. I could not wait to return to reading it.
    Very well written
Over thirty ago, voodoo practitioner Paul Renard permanently shook up the town of Brenner, Iowa when he burned down sterling Psychiatric Hospital, killing over twenty people. The killings were as gross as anyone can remember. To the fear of everyone, the lunatic escaped, leaving behind voodoo symbols. Though seen once over the subsequent years, Renard was never caught.
Just when the townsfolk started to feel safe, a new string of voodoo killings occur. TV Psychic Tandy West asks her former lover ex-FBI profiler Robert Payne to help find the murderer. Instead of a simple and clear case, Robert finds a town without pity filled with individuals who want their personal pasts burned away like Renard did to humans three decades ago.
The fourth Payne tale is an intriguing thriller that stars an entertaining lead protagonist who readers will enjoy observing in action. The story line places elements of the psychological thriller inside a modern day gothic tale. When the plot veers towards a gothic, it seems to sputter, but when talented Ed Gorman stays within the psychological path, the exciting tale is faster than a SST. Overall, the return of Payne, especially glimpses into his personal side, turns this into a fine novel that fans of the series will enjoy.

A pretty bad book loaded with "potty talk"
I usually write reviews on only very good or very bad books. This one is clearly the latter. Gorman is a pretty bad writer, with a plot with a Bates Motel-like ending that is dopey beyond belief. In addition, the two female leads (one is the narrator's sometimes lover) are two of the most obnoxious characters I have read in some time---totally unsympathetic!! Worse than all of that, frankly, is the fact that this author just loves "potty talk", in bed, out of bed, wherever!! Every bodily orifice is discussed in detail. The heroine(?) vomits on what seems every few pages. After making love she asks whether she farted all night while she slept, saying she had a flatulence problem. She also said she smelled at the beginning of her menstrual cycle. The narrator described every pee he took, etc., etc. These are not people I would invite over for dinner. What an offputting book Gorman has written!!
    More twists than a pretzel
This was the first book that I read by Ed Gorman and I ejoyed it very much. I thought it to be a very fast read and did not lack for excitement. The "profiler" Robert Payne is a compassionate character, but still dedicated to seeking the truth.
