    Entracing
Andy MacTavish turned 65 and his wife and son want him to retired. His son has hired a new young attorney to take over Andys office. Andy does not want to retire now; his son is getting desperate to get him out of the office.
Andy MacTavish accepts the appointment of interim Judge for the municipal court. He doesnt realize that the law director of the County seat, who also serves as prosecutor, has been sent there by a combination of Toledo and Detroit underworld figures to gain control of the local law enforcement. Apparently they plan on setting up illegal ventures in the town and the mob needs to have the law director hold the position of Judge. Thats when Andy knows he is in trouble.
This story is set in a small town in a rural Ohio county. Thierry has created some interesting characters similar to some that seem to show up in small town stories. MacTavish and his wife are busy campaigning for reelection going door to door and attending Firemens breakfasts and so on. I found the array of characters coming though the court fascinating. The opponent is setting certain cases up to trap or put the Judge in a difficult position but so far Andy has come up with creative solutions to the legal problems or sentences. Contrary to the impression implied by having a mod attempting to take over, the book is more light hearted and a fun story of a small town.
I found the story a delight to read and just a great get away from it all book. Rusty Nelson is the narrator of the book.

    So-so whodunit
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
It was OK, but I was disappointed by the sophomoric dialogue and simplisitic characters. The plot, however, is very good.
Would you be willing to try another book from Al Lamanda? Why or why not?
Yes, if Al Lamanda improved his style and character development. I think he needs to take his readers more seriously.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Maybe, depending on the director. Actually, this book seems to have written with a movie script in mind.

Not only must she take on one of the wealthiest families in the country, she must protect Suarez and herself from ruthless people bent on lethal revenge, while straddling the dangerous line between concerned involvement and forbidden passion for her client. Set in one of the most exclusive resorts in the world, The Borzoi Killings mixes all the twists of a sensational trial with all the dirty little secrets of the elite Hampton socialite lifestyles - from lavish parties, drug, and sex to corruption and dangerous secret cartels.

    Superb thriller
This is a superb thriller. It's set primarily in one of the most exclusive places in the world -- East Hampton, New York -- and in Manhattan. It opens with the murder of one of the richest men in the United States; it then shifts to the arrest and trial of a charismatic, handsome and illegal Mexican immigrant represented by one of the best criminal defense lawyers in the United States -- in this case, a woman, Raquel Rematti. The book is populated by fascinating characters, including the multi-faceted wife of the murdered man (and is she multifaceted), a former US Senator, a secretive drug lord of the vast and deadly Sinaloa drug cartel tasked with dominating the drug world of the Hamptons, and with shady detectives, some honorable men and women, and with trial scenes that are riveting. There's also a stunning, unexpected ending, one of those endings in the category of "if I told you what it is, I'd have to kill you." The central character -- Raquel Rematti -- is so complex, sensitive and powerful that I hope the author has her reappear in a sequel. There's more to be told about her.
Great thriller- Couldn't put it down
I finally got around to reading this and I read it straight through. I really enjoy Batista's work- he writes some great legal thrillers! This one opens with the brutal murder of a hedge fund billionaire in the legendary resort community of East Hampton, New York, the arrest of an illegal Mexican immigrant who looks like Antonio Banderas who worked for the murdered man and the victim's high maintenance wife, and the trial. What's most fascinating, however, is that Batista has created an indelible character -- Raquel Rematti, one of the three or four leading criminal lawyers in America and the only woman in that rarefied category. She volunteers to represent the handsome
Mexican because of her belief in his innocence and because of her concerns about the racist treatment of the large immigrant community in the Hamptons who work in complete obscurity to serve the needs of the rich and famous. Raquel Rematti -- a character deserving of many sequels -- ends up with the surprise of her life, as does the reader!
Move Over Grisham. There's a new mystery writer-lawyer in town!
I very much enjoyed Batista's Extaordinary Rendition and when I heard he'd written The Borzoi Killings I pre-ordered it.

Haunted by his own ghosts, Turner nonetheless goes in search of a truth he's not sure he can live with.
    Critic Reviews:
"In the final novel in Sallis Turner trilogy Turner finds himself at the centre of a community that, like so many others, is drying up, disappearing before his eyes"
"HauntingSallis writes poetic rings around the subject" (New York Times)

    Murder in a small town..
James Sallis is one fine teller of stories.. This was a John Turner book. Two years have passed since Val, Turner's friend was shot as they sat on his porch. Turner is a cop in a small Southern town slowly falling into decay. To Turner it is home. Trouble seems to find him and waiting at his cabin is his good friend Eldon Brown. "They think I killed someone" he says...Turner asks. "Did you?" "I don't know."......very good read..
    Short story, about daily life
This was a completely different kind of story, small town and their people, how they live their daily life. How life can change if given a chance. What a nice lite hearted book for a change. Was nice short story.
    Really good book
Salt River is the third in a trilogy, so read Cypress Grove and Cripple Creek first. Sallis has the talent to put in brief phrases that refer to classical literature and pop culture, almost as throw-away lines. His Turner character, as the others in this trilogy, are well-rounded, and the deep South setting exudes humidity and mosquitoes. The non-linear plots, in which episodes trigger memories that explain Turner's past, are well constructed, so the reader has to pay attention, which is something I like. Sallis is truly a writer of distinction.
    A memorable story
This is an interesting study of a complex character, one who will stay with you after you finish the book. The author's style takes a few chapters to adjust to, but once in the story you can't let it go. The study of the main character stays with you, and causes the reader to reflect on the situation, and the humanity of the main characters. I enjoyed it so much, I looked for the sequel, although this is not a prequel, and can stand alone very well.
    Death's Sweet Chords
I don't think you can read James Sallis and not walk away struck with awe and reverence. While others may major in plot or clever twists and irony, Sallis' triumph is his mastery of the language - his use of simple words effortlessly spun in to passages unlocking emotion and conjuring images that defy the common rural settings and ordinary folk of which he writes. This is the English language at its best - the power of Faulkner told in words that can actually be understood. Or think Cormac McCarthy with punctuation - a less complex, but equally potent rendering of the literature.
"Salt Creek" is the third, and one would think the last, in the series of John Turner, the ex-many-things and reluctant fill-in sheriff of a small Tennessee town where he's returned to settle out his last years.

Sharia Law in the United States
What a chilling and realistic portrait of our country this is. As the book opens, the President and the next seven people in the line of succession are assassinated. The country is thrown into turmoil as the ninth in line, a Texan named Bass Whitfield, who happens to be the Secretary of Agriculture, is sworn in to be President.
A political party called CM for Christian Militants is on the ascendant, and the chaos at the top gives the CM leaders the catalyst they need to seek support from the people. An unholy cabal of a megachurch pastor, a dirty Senator and a religious Secret Service agent seize the moment and convince several U.S. states to secede from the Union and form a new country called New Israel.
What I liked about Next Best Hope is that there is far more to the book than its plot, gripping as it is. The characters are living, breathing human beings with strong feelings and the occasional philosophical brainwave. They are leaders of one kind or another, and the advisors of leaders, and they compare their own crisis with the Civil War. One important scene takes place on the battlefield at Shiloh. This gives the story gravitas.
The courts set up by the new government of New Israel, and the punishments carried out against thieves, drunk drivers and others make you think of Sharia Law and punishments we do not normally associate with the American Midwest. Yet there it is in Next Best Hope, summary executions and chopping off people's hands for stealing. I found this totally believable in the context of the story, and the story made me imagine these things really happening in our country, and how it could come to pass.
Next Best Hope is a first class thriller with all the elements of a great read -- good writing, a fantastic plot, and a very cool ending that completely surprised me. I'd definitely recommend this book if you like thrillers.
Woodfin Has A Mind for Conspiracy
Stephen Woodfin delivers a fascinating tale of one religious group's desire to take over the U.S., and leaves the reader wondering if the broader scenario he creates is all that far from reality. In NEXT BEST HOPE, Woodfin weaves a layered story of assassination, deception, and elitism - all driven by a fanatical faith that pits the deeply religious Christian Militants against those whose faith might rest in God, but also in the U.S. Constitution.
Woodfin's cast of characters is far-reaching and the story takes off with a bang! Hang on tight because NEXT BEST HOPE never slows down, but Woodfin manages the action skillfully and does a great job of helping you understand the purity (or lack thereof) of each character's motivations and the ferocity with which they'll fight for their beliefs.

"The Black Bat" was the featured story in Black Book Detective magazine beginning in July of 1939, and running through 1953. Blinded former District Attorney Anthony Quinn was the costumed crusader who regained his sight to an amazing extent: He could now see in the dark. With super hearing, an enhanced sense of touch and smell, he battled the dark underbelly of crimedom. Around him he gathered a small band of aides: Carol Baldwin, daughter of a small-town policeman; Butch O'Leary, none too bright, but a staunch battler; and Silk Kirby, an ex-crook, now Quinn's valet. The Black Bat returns in these vintage pulp tales, reissued for todays listeners.

Length: 8 hrs and 48 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-27-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Legal Thrillers
    Publisher's Summary:
It's a new day in America - but old contracts must still be paid - Jack McEnroe is a construction worker with an unusual job: building a prison for terrorists. Like his neighbors in Red Rock, Wyoming, Jack isn't particularly concerned about politics. In a depressed rural economy, he's just grateful to have a job. Jack's boss, Dave Fetters, is grateful, too: he has a no-bid, cost-plus contract issued by the previous administration. It's his last chance to get rich, and he's making the most of it.
But Dave is cooking the books, passing inflated costs along to defense contractor Halcyon Corporation - and Jack's ex-wife, Kyla, plans to blow the whistle. Suddenly, everyone Jack cares about, including his two young children, is in danger. As the first winter snows fall in the rugged mountains, Jack must navigate a razor-wire labyrinth to rescue those he loves. And the true price of liberty, he discovers, is paid not in dollars, but human life.
    Members Reviews:
A decent mystery but with cardboard villains
The genre of this book is hard to classify. It starts off as sort of a literary vein, with a lot exploration of Jack McEnroe, the main character, and others in his life. The writing here is eloquent, and the setting and the people of this small town really come to life.
The mystery/thriller portion of the story takes awhile to start, and that is where I had some troubles. Kyla, Jackâs ex-wife, discovers the billing fraud--and this discovery and attempted cover-up is the impetus for the entire action plot--happens in a rather unrealistic way: (minor spoiler) she accidentally opens a spreadsheet on a shared computer. I find it unlikely that someone engaged in fraudulent billing practices on a multi-million dollar project would leave all the evidence in a non-password-protected file on a non-password protected computer that could be accessed by multiple parties.
The biggest problem, however, with this book was the cardboard villains and stereotyped (negatively) politicians and contractors. Jack, Kyla, and other âgood guysâ were all presented as real people, with layers to their personalities. The only âbad guyâ who was given even a semblance of real character was Dave Fetters, the owner of the local construction company. The primary villain, Shane Fetters, rampages through the story in an unbelievably over-the-top Snidely-Whiplash-esque manner (except that Mr. Whiplash had more depth). Politicians and the contractor rep are presented as arrogant ignorant idiots and/or thugs, to the point where Iâd bet $500 that I can guess the authorâs political persuasion and at that point I feel more like I am being preached to than reading a story. I found it distracting and insulting.
That said, I thought Jackâs reaction to and handling of the situation refreshingly realistic and level-headed. That aspect of the book was well-done.
Smart Thriller that Delivers Major Fireworks
The Price of Liberty begins the way a novel set in Wyoming should - with a bar fight at a rural honky tonk called the Stumble Inn. It doesn't take long for Graff to veer into more serious territory, as two senators with ties to the funding of a new Gitmo-style prison are taken on a "Wyoming safari" by someone who has never hunted a day in his life.
