Not recommended, a anti-scizophrenic mess

While this had some interesting points (and the writing in the beginning was riveting), it ended up with an anti-scizophrenic mess were there is only kind of mental illness (scizophrenia) and that makes you likely to kill your family.

An example on why this disappointed me so much: Our main character, Julia, immediately starts showing signs of PTSD, soon revealed to be connected to her parents death 15 years earlier. She has nightmares, she has flashbacks, she has the entire package ... but in the end, they decide to call it a "psychotic break" and tells her that unless it lasts more than 6 months, it's not scizophrenia.

Great story

Great story, hard to put down to do anything else. Couldn't tell what would happen next. I work in the mental health field and can see true mental health issues and those that play the system...

SUPERB Legal Thriller - with Twists & Surprises Galore. One of the BEST!

This is a WOW of a legal thriller. Absolutely TOP NOTCH! The young prosecutor, Julia Vacanti, knows that this is a case that could make her future career. At the same time, tragedy in her past cautions that this will test her inner strength. There's a defendant, accused of murdering his family. People look at him and see EVIL. What does Julia see?

I have enjoyed other books by this author, Jilliane Hoffman, and I think this may be the best I've read so far. The author's personal knowledge of the legal system shows through, and her books have the genuine ring of authority.

You won't forget this book too quickly. It has so many jolts and surprises to keep your attention close.

I'd recommend this for anyone who enjoys a good mystery - and particularly for those who favor legal thrillers. One of the BEST!

Good courtroom drama, plus an education on mental health

A brilliant combination of courtroom drama and tutorial on schizophrenia. I learned a lot while being entertained by the story. Great characters, too; some will break your heart.

Gripping! Can't stop reading from the first page!

My first Jilliane Hoffman book and what a great read it was!! She is now on my list of favorites.I just ordered a few of her other books. Fast paced, exciting, great characters and keep you guessing until the end. I enjoy books like that. It was also nice not to catch printing or spelling mistakes in this book. Keep them coming, Ms. Hoffman!

This might have really happened!

What made the experience of listening to Malpractice! the most enjoyable?

This is a novel about a particular time in American medical history that few of us know much about. This fictional account of that pivotal time illuminates how a twisted system coupled with greed helped turn a functioning medical system into the mess we have today. Fascinating!

What Really Happened Out There?

The Tortoise Shell Gameis quite different from most tales listed as thrillers. So often, a cheap thriller begins with some kind of violent incident just to get the reader interested. But then every few pages thereafter, you can count on something frightening or dreadful happening: a car crash, a car chase, a creepy murder, terrorist activity, a violent explosion.

What lifts The tortoise Shell Game so high as an excellent read is this fact: it is a spot on serious mental thriller. From its very first pages, the book plays with your mind! Using flashbacks from time to time, author Asaro provides glances into the early life of Anthony Darren.

We see Darren as emotionalâone precious girlfriendâa lifelong sweetheart. We see him as a very strong character right from the commencement of the story when he explains that while still in high school, heâs made top grades and is also a respected talented member of the high school wrestling team. As the story moves on, Darren and his girl arrive at a drive-in restaurant. There he has a vicious fight with a loudmouthed bullying enemy who swears revenge for his injuries.

Besides writing a twisted novel, Author Asaro has a unique grasp of thoughtful words and expressions that make this story realistic and alive. When Darren lures himself into bed with beautiful Laura, he says of her, ââ no un-tanned spot anywhere evident. Her curves and muscles, wizardry beneath his fingers, were the inspiration for a sculpture.â

Some pages later, Asaroâs writing style in The Tortoise Shell Game again struck me when he described Darrenâs own feelings as he embraced his first love and their beautiful daughter. âFor a while the three of them clung to one another, and an upheaval Anthony couldnât choke off misted his eyes.â

Years later as a well-known lawyer, Darren attempts to defend a close friend of his who now is the owner of a tuna fishing fleet. Darren and the Sea Diva owner have been friends from their earlier younger daysâback when the violent fight took place in the drive-in parking lot.

Darren is slowly sucked into a mysterious incident that claimed two lives aboard the Sea Diva, on its maiden fishing voyage. to get to the good parts of the book

This story was far too slow paced. There was way too much detail as to the mundane, day to day life events of the main character, than there were twists and turns in the plot. I kept speed reading, to get to the good parts of the book. Also I was able to recognize the twist about 30 minutes until the end of the book. A really extraordinary book keeps you guessing to the very end. It was not a bad book, but it was not a great book.

The story was ok and overall it wasn't bad. I didn't really like the pace the book took. The way the scenes and actions were described I think went a little too far in mundane minute detail. It took away from the story and had me skimming ahead to see how it ended. I

Excellent story!

This is my first Edger novel and I was very impressed by a number of things. I really appreciated how the author tied so many things together, and still finished the story where he started. This is a very well written story and the plot lines, characters, relationships, as well as twists and "hints" of other things is so very well done. I'm going to add Edger to my reading list.

Decent tho it drags

I enjoyed the story. Tho the writing could have been....different. Such long in depth descriptions was at times exhausting, yet yearning for the end kept me trudging along. Final confrontation was a shocker, so I enjoyed that very much. Will continue to read this authors works....

Nail Biting!!!!

This was a nail biting book,that I read in two sittings. It is very well written an easy read! I am now looking into more books by Stephen Edger.

Buyer Beware: Check for termites and GHOSTS!

I would call this a case study dealing with the subject of whether a homeowner must reveal if anything violent or traumatic happened in his or her home when selling it. The Milliken family move into a house where unbeknownst to them a murder/suicide took place. Through neighbors and classmates of the children, the truth comes out. The family then starts to believe that paranormal behavior is happening in the home, and they want out, contacting the seller about getting their money back. Court room drama thus commences.

The most fascinating part of this Kindle Single is the "Master of Disaster" real estate appraiser who devised a system of figuring out how much value a house loses depending on what horror happened there. Talk about finding a need and filling it!

I don't believe in ghosts, however I admit that I would be creeped out if I found out something truly horrific happened in my house. It's an interesting subject to ponder, and definitely worth a read.

Excellent Treatise On Haunted Homebuyimg

Buyer beware: some states require disclosure of economic depreciation of a home caused by psychological trauma within--violent deaths--that create stigma, and some states do not require disclosure. Haunted or not--would you want to pay full market value for the house In which Adam Lanza shot his mother and thought up the scheme of murdering 20 preschoolers--or not? Wouldn't you at least want to know that the house you were buying was so stigmatized? This little gem of a book offers, in the style of the New Journalism, a dissertation on what constitutes a home's psychological stigma and a scientific analysis for determining, in courts, market value and case history precedent.

The story was a little short but it fascinated me. I also looked up online to verify that it was all legit. It was down to the appraiser of this haunted house even appraised Nicole Brown's apt where she was supposedly murdered by OJ Simpson's.....crazy

This set of 3 surprised me. I have known Linda was a good read. But all 3 left me hanging for more.

Awful! So tired getting bad books!

Once again I trusted reviews & the 'chosen for you' recommendations. I'm just into sappy mushy lovey dicey stories especially where the writing is " then he said, then she said, but I said..." It got a little interesting around chapter 18. There was a good story here. The premise, coyotes that prey on Mexicans, the dessert setting, the law enforcer agencies but it just didn't come together especially when finality did not even tie into story line. Ugh so much wasted money on Audible and they do NOT take returns as easily as advertised. Once again I don't believe Audible rises to the level of an NPR sponsor.

Disappointing narration.

I was so keen to hear this book but the author was not the best choice to read it. His narration was disjointed, patchy, hesitant and had no " flow". Indeed, if I hadn't been aware that he was the author I would have thought he'd found some barely literate person to read it. Harsh criticism yes, but having listened to skilled and articulate narrators throughout my association with Audible, I am doubly disappointed and have returned it,sadly.

WORST NARRATION EVER

Unfortunately, I didn't even make it to chapter four, and really don't know if the book was good or not.

The narrator was so robotic and stilted, I was unable to focus on the words being read.

I would have given the book a zero, but that isn't an option. Wouldn't recommend listening to this book, even if it was free.
