Good read, but not my favorite of the series
About the series: I actually read the last one first -- I read QUESTION OF TRUST in May, and I really liked it, so I decided to go back and read all the rest. With this book, I have now read all of the Izzy McNeil series as it currently exists. I like Izzy McNeil as a character. I always enjoy a good novel set in Chicago -- my adoptive hometown. But maybe reading them all in a row was a little much! It started to get way too silly, so I would not recommend reading them all in 60 days like I did!
I enjoyed the story, I really did. But as a lawyer, at some point, I just kept thinking, "who are they kidding?" You can't decide to second chair a murder trial the day of the trial. And a client who claims to be innocent, but won't tell you what you need to know to defend her is an idiot. Those things aside, Izzy McNeil feels like an old friend, and I hope to hear from her again. But not for a while. Her life is a little dramatic for my tastes -- I need a break!
And I hope she finds her way back to Sam!
    Five Stars
    Enjoyed it!
    Great legal thriller
My preference is for legal thrillers and this a good one.
    Izzy is awesome!!!
Another great addition to Izzy McNeil Mysteries! I love how Ms. Caldwell references the past books and helps set up this story. I wish I had Izzy's great friends and supportive family. I cannot wait for Izzy's next adventure!!

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Legal Thrillers
    Publisher's Summary:
Stan and Rebekah's good friends, Don and Pam Blaylock, are in deep trouble. An imprudent investment in a Golden Dragon franchise and their son's arrest for DWI triggers an avalanche of misfortune culminating in the murder of Luther Bell, the smooth talking promoter responsible for their impending demise. While Stan conducts a preemptive investigation to prove his clients are innocent, he is inundated with lawsuits and claims from their growing list of creditors and must deal with the inevitable marital strife that threatens this once proud family. A wrongful death suit worth millions, ancient Peruvian pottery full of diamonds and a confrontation with the mob rounds out this nail-bitting legal thriller.
    Critic Reviews:
"The action moves forward at a brisk pace with surprising (and ingenius) plot twists, and this deeply felt book may be Manchee's best work to date.... Manchee writes a very realistic prose, exact, viewing the sharp edges of reality wisely, and he gives us glimples beneath the surface, wondering, sypathizing, fearing. There's a special power and grace here, about family, friends, death, and all that ties that bind one into a non-stop chase to unwrap puzzle within puzzle." (The Book Reader)
"Cash Call continues the story of Stan Turner's uphill battle to raise a family while hunting down clues to save his clients. A modern day Perry Mason, Turner is living proof that defending accused murders doesn't always pay one's mortgage." (Mary Welk, Deadly Doses)
"Cash Call is a well crafted novel in the manner of Ellery Queen, Gardner and Grisham. Dialogue is fast-paced, the narrative moves smoothly from Stan and his personal situation to his interaction with clients, the romantically inclined gal who just won't take no for an answer and even a mobster." (Cindy Penn, Midwest Book Review)

    Cash Call................................... Molly's Reviews
    Entertaining read, Highly Recommended.
Writer Manchee has crafted another great setting of enjoyable, credible characters, situations and blunders. The narrative Manchee sets forth in Cash Call brings us another great read with full time lattorney part time sleuth Stan Turner. Turner has much of Perry Mason in his methodology but muddles along without Mason's perfect record. Cash Call is a well written work complete with many of the characters we have come to enjoy from the prior works in this ongoing series. As the Turner children grow up we see Stan, Rebekah and their family behaving much as our own. And that is in part what makes this series so engaging.
The reader is hooked straight away in the opening of this gripping, creative story theme. Transitions are handled well, with plot and sub plot all lined in a fiduciary manner. Manchee's characters are natural. Dialogue is not contrived as the characters work to resolve problems. Climax and conclusion are handled with usual Manchee skill. I can easily believe that Stan would have handled the circumstances he faced in Cash Call quite as is set down by writer Manchee.
Poor Stan and his always present cash flow problems does again manage to prove his clients are not guilty of the murder of the scoundrel who was the cause of so many of their problems.

    Narrating is Horrible
This is the worse narrating I have ever heard, I could barely follow the story the narrating was so bad. The male narrated voice is ridiculous and the female sound like a bad high school play. The narrating is way to distracting.
great book with a great plot. twists to the end
great book. the plot keeps twisting to the end. great characters too. just enough sex to keep it interesting

"William Manchee is at it again with his 10th legal thriller, Deadly Defiance: A Stan Turner Mystery. No doubt Manchee, who is in real life a Texas attorey, is quite familiar with the drama that can emanate from practicing law....Manchee is a very capable story teller and is able to effectively maintain our interest througout this crisp no-frills style devoid of complex legal jargon. In addition, with his strong and controlled writing, he carries his three plots along with just the right amount of believability conerning witnesses, clues, and evidence." Language: English
    Release date: 09-01-11
    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Legal Thrillers
    Publisher's Summary:
A gripping courtroom drama combining psychological suspense and political intrigue from the pen of ex-barrister-turned-crime novelist Simon Tolkien, grandson of J.R.R. Tolkien.
Its the trial - and scandal - of the decade: Greta Grahame, the beautiful young wife of Minister of defence Sir Peter Robinson, is accused of conspiring to murder her predecessor, Peters first wife, Anne.
The prosecution case depends heavily on the evidence of one witness - Gretas sixteen-year-old stepson, Thomas.
A dreamy, bookish boy, Thomas was present but hidden on the night two men broke into their ancestral home, The House of the Four Winds, and killed his mother. His testimony steadfastly links Greta to the hitmen.
But the boys motives are unclear. Is he so crazed by grief that he would frame his stepmother for murder? Or are his feelings toward Greta more complicated than anyone realizes? Might he actually be jealous of his father, jealous enough to destroy what remains of his own family? Or is he telling the truth - that this cunning young woman will stop at nothing in her pursuit of wealth and status?
Simon Tolkien combines compelling courtroom drama and classic psychological suspense in this sharply etched page-turner.
Previously published in 2003 as The Stepmother.

Tough name to live up to and fails spectacularly.
This is author's first book and it shows. I've listened for half hour and cannot bear any more. The characters have no depth and are total cliches. It started badly with 'comedy' villains (you can almost hear the rough 1950's stereotypical cockney crook) It is really dreadful and, regrettably I've wasted my money. I generally finish all books, but this one is impossible. It has left me feeling robbed.
    Shame about the narration
I quite enjoyed this book but unfortunately it was marred for me by the dreary monotone of the narrator. I would have thought that as he is the author, he might have had a better feel for the intrigue and suspense in the book, but sadly I just felt the whole book was let down by his narration. It almost felt that he was seeing and reading the book for the first time - bizarre as he actually wrote it. All the characters sounded alike and it was difficult to work out who was speaking. Shame as I think this could have been a good story, despite the predictable ending, if it hadn't annoyed me so much. Disappointed.
    Very Enjoyable
Thoroughly enjoyable listen. Although I thought I knew how it would turn out there were times when I really wasn't sure I'd got it right.

    Good book
Enjoyed the book. The only thing which I found a bit frustrating was the narration. Annie Aldington is a brilliant narrator. I've listened to many of her books. in this series the accent of the characters changed from earlier novel.

not gripping story but easy read. a little disapointed in book over all. hope next one more interesting
    poppycock
i dont know why i read thewhole series. so many inconsistincies in the books the caracthers ages and the year it was supposed to be didnt add up a lot of the time. too much detail in a lot of places and not enough in others. introducing us to new caracthers in some of the books then killing them of in the nxt. because the writer seemed to only want to concentrate on main central caracthers.

    Misleading premise
This book is number 8 in the Dr Steven Dunbar series, this is absolutely not an archeological mystery (as I had thought when buying this book) nor does the book focus on history at all.
Despite being mislead by the premise I did end up liking the series which is about a specialist detective who investigates science-related crimes usually involving a conspiracy or two.

    Critic Reviews:
"William Manchee could be Dallas' answer to John Grisham.... Just like Grisham's books, the protangonist appears to be a thinly veiled version of Manchee. The novel follows Stan Turner... as he moves to open his law practice and becomes involved with an insurance scam that ends up with his wife being falsely accused of murder. It sounds like just the kind of potboiler that Grisham is known for. Let's just hope Manchee doesn't option any of his books to movie producers..." (Dallas Observer)

    Disappointing
After reading that this is a "must read", I was looking forward to an exceptional book. I was very disappointed. The plot lines were predictable with no depth or interesting twists (with the exception of an attempt at the end). I also thought the narrator's reading was bland and unemotional.

    A Pride of Digressions
Higgins wries for the ear. And to it. Characters tell us their stories which eventually add up to what a Higgins novel's about. And these people ramble around like morning hair... Y'know, the way the strands go after a night-long pillow buffeting? But anyway, I digress. Which is my point, and OUCH! ... Just stubbed my imagination on a cliché that I had to comb out... Okay, where was I...
And that's the way people talk, y'know what I'm sayin'? How they filter out a sort of stew of thoughts that eventually result in revealing a rich story arc tha's thick with what? Character? Yea, so that's what Higgins does... He tosses digressions into a plot set just beneath the simmering setting so that everything cooks together into a foamy, chewy experience.
And here in 'Sandra Nichols Found Dead' Higgins comtinues writing plays for George Guidall to prattle, or declare, or even sometimes insinuate into life... And I love it. Careful though, Higgins is an acquired taste so you'd best start with the first Kennedy book and enjoy your way here to Sandra Higgins's dead body in a bag.
    Could not finish the story
George Higgins put in too many details. I could not follow the story. I finally turned it off after two tries. I never did figure out why he spent the first chapter discussing cameras. What did the camera club have to do with the story. Who cares if the club has a potluck and who brought what. Maybe this was the story and I missed the point. Worse book I even downloaded!

    For Legal Thriller Fans
I received a free copy of this book through Goodreads First Reads in exchange for a fair review.
If you are a fan of legal thrillers by John Grisham, Tony Dunbar, and Teresa Burrell, you will like this book. (Actually, one could easily mistake it for a book by John Grisham) The book is so enjoyable to read because the charactersâ inner worlds and the environment are described in detail, and the story has so many twists and turns. It is also edited carefully and is written by someone articulate with excellent language skills. The story telling flows well and is fast-paced with breathtaking suspense. Almost four-hundred page book has three legal thrillers and so many characters with side stories going at the same time, making the story lines so complex that it gets confusing getting back and forth sometimes. It doesnât hurt the fact the main character is a decent, loving, and kind person and a husband, and the book doesnât have graphic violence, sex, or explicit language. I personally think a three hundred page book has the ideal length and this book has enough material for two books. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this book a lot, it was hard for me to put it down after starting, and I will add the books by this author to my reading list. Five stars.
    A Must Read!!!
Deadly Defiance by William Manchee is a crime mystery thriller that features women sleuths. I loved the murder cases that were brought up, inside this intriguing novel. Here, readers will find that two women are being accused of their husbands' murders. So, there are two women sleuths each working a separate murder case that involves a woman being charged for the crime of murdering their husbands. What's really interesting is that one of these accused women has been labeled as a wife killer because each of her husbands has been killed "by her". Then, there's the fact that this same woman killer who was talking to Stan about how her husband left her poor and that she wished he was dead...and then ends up in jail charged, of her husband's death. She definitely had the motive but did she do it? Next, a Hispanic woman is wanting another trial. She also has been charged, for killing, her husband. Except she blames the boss who is tangled up in the drug cartel...
Deadly Defiance is exactly that. Stan and his new partner Jodie get mixed up in a deadly situation that has them defying the cartel who wants revenge on them...and then there's Paula taking on the other murder case. Danger, excitement, and intrigue will follow readers on every page.
