Superb new novel in the Tom Gray series!
British author Alan McDermott does no disappoint with Book 6 in the Tom Gray series. Tom Gray is retired and living in the US with his young daughter when he is called on by MI5 to rescue an MI 5 office who has been kidnapped by Russian gangsters and taken to an Asian country. This leads to diplomatic issues between the Brits and the Russians. There are huge amounts of action and suspense. James Langton narrates flawlessly.
    Highly recommended!

The violent consequences of Oakes' transgression are so catastrophic that it forces him to question the nature of evil and to face a terrible reality: Was Dove responsible for one of the bloodiest crimes Scotland has seen in years?

Is it just me or does our M need to step up her game a bit?
The story idea was great but unfortunately kind of unraveled and became a dis-organized bunch of smaller stories for getting the bigger story.
    Thought this was a parody for a while....it isn't
I thought this book was a dark parody for most of the listen. I have yet to read this author but have heard much of him...too bad I chose this book as my introduction. The reactions of the characters to the main crux of the storyline seem preposterously overblown...I didn't know whether to take it seriously or point and laugh. All in all, I was disappointed when I figured out that I was supposed to feel scared...or at least *tense*..all along. I wasn't. I was just frustrated that I wasted a credit on this piece of poo.
    *SPOILER ALERT*
So, I guess the premise of this story is that there are some people out there who are born with a vestigial tail. As a medical practitioner, the first thing that pops into my mind is "Big whoop...you want scary? Let's re-arrange some chromosomes." But evidently, having a vestigial tail is a VERY BIG DEAL and...evil ensues? Or, just some very bad behavior? I don't know - but a medical semi-anomaly is hardly spine-tingling. When it was revealed that the Big Scary Monster is really just a person with a birth defect the story went from scary to just silly and a little mean. I wouldn't recommend this book. Not even if it was on sale.
    Another great Mo Hayder
I liked the characters in this, a little slow in places, I also like the narrative from two perspectives.
    I thought I was a Hayder fan...
This is absolutely terrible! Couldn't even finish it! The characters are terrible, the story line is terrible and the narrator isn't much cop either. Mo, I'm not angry, just very disappointed!!!
    just average
Average story which runs at an average pace. I would not read again however it did fill a few hours.

    Publisher's Summary:
Tawcester Towers, the family seat of the Lyminster family, has suffered an unwelcome injection of distant cousins - so distant that they aren't even British!
Count Igor and Count Lyudmilla Bashusky had to flee Russia after the Revolution and have spent the intervening years building up debts in the hotels of Europe's capitals and sponging off ever more exasperated (and distant) relatives.
The Bashusky's arrival at Tawcester Towers causes a stir, and it's up to Blotto and Twinks, that indefatigable duo, to provide a solution to get them back to Russia. Reversing the Russian Revolution and getting a Tsar back into St Petersburg's Winter Palace is just the sort of challenge the fiercely bright Twinks relishes, though her dim-witted brother, Blotto, shows less aptitude for the subtleties of international politics, despite his commendable bravery.
The siblings soon find themselves in Berlin to try to broker a meeting with the White Russian community and swiftly become embroiled in a world of spies, counterspies, conspiracies and counterconspiracies.
Just when things seem to be looking up, little do Blotto and Twinks realise that their plans are being monitored by the spymaster Fyodor Vlachko, a former worker on the Bushusky's estate who has now risen to a senior post in the secret police of the newly formed Soviet Union....

    Love Blotto and Twinks
With Twinks brains and Blotto's cricket bat no problem is insurmountable. Simon Brett is the perfect narrator for these zany tales.
    Poor Blotto
Poor Blotto??? Poor Me! They only have three of these books on Audible and they are so wonderful! Blotto and I have so much in common, I never really know what is gong on around me either! He really is in a pickle this time. No one in Russia plays cricket...yet!
Now to wait patiently for the next book to arrive on Audible! I hope it will be soon!

    Title: The Winter Girl
    Author: Matt Marinovich
    Narrator: Quincy Dunn-Baker

Length: 6 hrs and 26 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-19-16
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 55 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
Scott is spending his winter in the Hamptons with his wife, Elise, who is taking care of her terminally ill father. With Elise in the hospital every day and their marriage growing increasingly strained, Scott spends a lot of time alone. He finds himself fascinated with the seemingly empty house next door, where every night the lights go out at exactly 11:00 p.m. Convinced no one is home, he decides to break in the next day.
Although he doesn't discover much of interest, trespassing gives him a thrill he hasn't felt in a long time. He soon convinces his wife to come with him on his next visit, and their simple transgression leads to an escalating series of bad decisions, infidelities, violence, and shocking revelations.
    Key selling points:
A poisonous bon bon: sex, secrets, violence, and marriage wrapped tightly in a deceptively short novel. You'll enjoy every deliciously naughty moment through to the chilling end.
Blistering prose: Matt Marinovich has the voice, razor sharp throughout, and then he just hits you with a line or paragraph or scene about love and loss and loneliness that makes you realize you've been holding your breath for minutes.
Rear Window unhinged: Scott likes to watch. He's not the only one.
A scathing take on the Hamptons: What is more tasty than the worst-case scenario playing out in those big Hamptons mansions? Whatever happens, it still won't affect property values....
    Members Reviews:
    Gone Girl on steroids
This book reminds me of Gone Girl, except 100 times more twisted and disturbing. The subject matter is dark, depressing, and sick...and yet Marinovich manages to make the story satirical, funny, and entertaining. The writing is brilliant, and each sentence is packed with evocative and at times hilarious descriptions. I was impressed that Marinovich managed to fit so much storyline into only 6 hours and 30 minutes. If you liked You by Caroline Kepnes, you'll probably like it, but definitely be forewarned that this book isn't for the faint of heart.
Suspenseful, creepy, a real page turner
Take a couple going through a midlife crisis (frustrated in their jobs, no money, no children, no dreams) and put them in a Hitchcock-like scenario where the husband starts, out of boredom (and while his wife his attending the terminally ill father), lurking at the summer house next door where strange things seem to happen.
The book is a real page-turner, past-paced with unexpected plot twists: The story gets increasingly dark, at times creepy and disturbing on multiple levels. The book is far from being as polished and insightful as Gone Girl (one cant stay away from comparing the two books). The author has taken the (strange) choice to avoid any character development: we do not have even hints of their physical appearance, age or anything that could induce the reader to feel some empathy and additional closeness to the story . Toward the end the novel is muddied by the fact that so many things are happening at once- without good explanation- and it sort of loses it's way for a bit, but the end is as good it can be.
Despite its shortcomings, I read the book in a couple of days (exceptionally fast for me) and, must admit it, I enjoyed more than a bit.

Not Victor the Assassin or the Grayman
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
If you've never read Tom Wood or Mark Greaney
Has True Conviction turned you off from other books in this genre?
no, it wasn't a good representation of this genre.
    A straight-to-video B-movie of a book
I'm going to be kind to the author and give him an "OK" on this. If you prefer a Steven Segall to a Sean Connery then this is your cup of tea. There is a reason that the more acclaimed authors in this genre are "more acclaimed".
At the 2/3 mark I considered quitting and returning it but I pressed on. Not a wasted 8 hours but not the best use of my time. .... it was "OK".
    Not a fan
Lumbers along without actually building tension. I'd had enough after 6 chapters. It's like a G rated assassin story, not believable at all.

    Publisher's Summary:
From Michael Baron, the award-winning creator of Nexus and Badger, comes a tale of terror and suspense set against the backdrop of the outlaw biker culture.
Josh Pratt is an ex-con turned private investigator. A woman dying of cancer hires him to find the son she gave up as a baby. The child's father is a sadistic sociopath named Moon who has vowed to kill her for abandoning them.
Josh is the biker, caught up in a race for survival against a human monster on the road between heaven and hell at the end of which lies either salvation or damnation. Baron spins a tale of unrelenting suspense and horror that moves across his narrative landscape like the roar of a chopper's engine. Creating memorable characters and authentic backgrounds, this is an amazing, quality crime thriller unlike anything you've ever heard of before. The man who shook up the comic industry with his revolutionary stories now turns his limitless skill and imagination to the world of crime fiction and the result will blow you away.

Biker brings the thrills with a colorful tough-guy protagonist
Somewhere inside biker Josh Pratt is a good man. Accepting Christ in prison, Josh has bent a few rules with the help of his lawyer and become a private detective. Heâs trying to keep on the straight and narrow, but when his new girlfriend asks him to find her friendâs missing son, kidnapped by his biker father shortly after being born, he reluctantly accepts. Pratt has no idea heâd be better off kicking a hornetâs nest and running screaming through the horde. Josh infiltrates biker culture and finds a leadâthe boyâs father is a criminal and a very dangerous man. He is also one of the most feared gang enforcers in the world. Now Josh has to find the boy, deal with his crazy new girlfriend and protect everyone in his life from the boyâs sadistic father. And make it to heaven. All in a dayâs work.
Writer Mike Baron is one of finest comic book writers the field has ever produced, creating Nexus, the Badger, the Butcher and many other memorable characters (and if you look hard enough, you can catch up with the Badger in his Biker cameo). Here he turns in an action packed novel about a conflicted man trying to do the right thing, but having to break a lot of clavicles to do it. Josh Pratt may be a Godly man, but heâs still tough as nails and will do what the situation requires. If I had one criticism of Biker, it is that Pratt needs to break a few more heads. He does diffuse a few situations by bravado alone before they get out of hand. Baron is such a great hand-to-hand combat writer I would have loved to have read a few more brawling fistfights. Still, a superb read with a fun plot, great pacing and some white-knuckle action. How many other books will you read this month where the protagonist faces off against a mountain lion with a pocketknife? I loved it!
    A Rollicking Ride
If you've ever thought there is a sleazy undercurrent to the Sturgis bike rally, Baron's found a way to make it even sleazier. Following up his biker gang that couldn't shoot straight in "Helmet Head," he's created a meaner, nastier bunch including the Aztec Skulls and Warbonnets, who deal in dognap, kidnap, hot Ducati's, meth and murder.

    Not so shocking
Would you try another book from Paula Hawkins and/or the narrators?
    Not sure and it depends
Would you ever listen to anything by Paula Hawkins again?
    Not sure and it depends
What about the narratorss performance did you like?
    Pretty decent, did their best
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from La Fille du train?
    Probably 50% of the book
    Any additional comments?
I got this book after seeing build boards for the upcoming movie - "Thriller that shocked the world".Thru long hours till the last minutes I was hoping for the "shock", some unexpected revelation at the end... didn't happen.Nothing shocking, pools of suspects so think and no one is beyond suspicion, so eventually, oh it was that person... oh well.It tries to be "Gone Girl", but overall suspension is barely there. I guess it's easy to shock the word now days.
But it's serviceable for the long commute.
    Un plaisir
    Any additional comments?
Je cherchais un livre pour m'entraîner en français et je crois que j'ai faite une bonne choix.
L'histoire est captivante et la narration est un vrai plaisir aux oreilles.
    straightforward thriller, nothing special
the book served well for improving my French, but the story was a bit too simple to be really interesting...it also took a bit too long and was too dragged out, but at least it managed to keep me curious enough to finish it. performance is good.
