    Publisher's Summary:
Patrick Hoffman burst onto the crime fiction scene with The White Van, a bank heist thriller set in the back streets of San Francisco and a finalist for the CWA Ian Fleming Steel Dagger Award. Now he returns with his second novel, Every Man a Menace, the inside story of a ruthless ecstasy-smuggling ring.
San Francisco is about to receive the biggest delivery of MDMA to hit the West Coast in years. Raymond Gaspar, just out of prison, is sent to the city to check in on the increasingly erratic dealer expected to take care of distribution. In Miami, the man responsible for getting the drugs across the Pacific has just met the girl of his dreams - a woman who can't seem to keep her story straight. And thousands of miles away in Bangkok, someone farther up the supply chain is about to make a phone call that will put all their lives at risk. Stretching from the Golden Triangle of Southeast Asia to the Golden Gate of San Francisco, Every Man a Menace offers an unflinching account of the making, moving, and selling of the drug known as Molly - pure happiness sold by the brick, brought to market by bloodshed and betrayal.

I really liked the white van
I really liked the white van. This book, not so much. No characters to care about one way or another.
    Another Great One!
Like "The White Van", this latest book by Patrick Hoffman keeps you on the edge of your seat, wishing you had time to finish it all in one read. And like "The White Van", the characters pop out at you, linger in your memory. His writing, deceivingly simple, has a great visual quality which gives the impression you're watching it in real time. And if that is not enough, you learn about the world from his books--this one the world of drug trade. Weaving stories into each other, the plot builds excitement until you can't stand it and simply miss appointments to finish the tale! Excellent. Can't wait for another thriller from the author!

As they become part of fashionable London society, they encounter the glamorous socialite Rosamund Harwell and her wealthy impresario husband, Laurence. Unlike the Wimseys they are not in love - and all too soon, one of them is dead. A murder case that only Lord Peter Wimsey can solve.

    Loved It!
Great, the voice was just right! He brought the period to life, and did the characterisations well. Work needed on the French accent though.
    swan song
Positively the last appearance of the rich, intelligent and amusing prose which characterises the late, great Dorothy L Sayers. Faithfully if less skilfully completed by Jill Paton Walsh, one can still recognise and revel in the characters.
Ian Carmichael remains, with Edward Petherbridge, the best available reader of these novels and his loss is sadly felt. A sensitive, well paced performance of a delightful novel with touches of the ingenious.
    surprised
loved all Lord peter read by Ian carmichael, wasn't sure would like this. But did very much.
    Thrones and dominations
Loved this book. Ian Carmichael brings the characters to life and makes them very real
    Wonderful book
I thoroughly enjoyed this book having at first been very doubtful of starting on it.as I had so loved the Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane original novels by Dorothy L Sayers However I shall now be purchasing the next novel in this series and that is surely the best compliment I can give!

Can an old man who knows nothing about mobile phones, the Internet, or social media possibly solve a murder in the modern world, especially one that stretches far beyond the sandy beaches of Fuerteventura?

    A very odd book
Is there anything you would change about this book?
This was an odd story. The plot was not very plausible & the ending was predictable. A car floats to shore after falling out of a shipping container & then washes up on the beach. What?
    Dull
Length about three times more than the plot justifies. Implausible and ordinary. Do not bother

Chosen for Simon Mayo's Radio 2 Book Club, this is the chilling new ghost story from the best-selling author of Dark Matter.
    The Himalayas, 1935.
Kangchenjunga. Third-highest peak on earth. Greatest killer of them all.
Five Englishmen set off from Darjeeling, determined to conquer the sacred summit. But courage can only take them so far - and the mountain is not their only foe.
As the wind dies, the dread grows. Mountain sickness. The horrors of extreme altitude. A past that will not stay buried.
And sometimes, the truth does not set you free.

    Thin Air
This is an engrossing and claustrophobic story whose atmosphere and message gets under your skin. Daniel Weyman does a fantastic job at steering away from a melodramatic performance where others wouldn't have been able to, and Paver does an outstanding job at making THIN AIR more than just your average ghost story. Purchased a copy in hardback so I can scribble my notes down once I listen to it again.
    Exceptionally Creepy
Michelle Pacer does it again with a truly compelling and terrifying tale. Claustrophobic creeping dread, best way I can think of to describe the atmosphere she created. The narrator is equally amazing making for a Perfect ghost story for the Holiday season. 12/10 will listen again!
    Another hit from Michelle Paver!
If you've read Dark Matter and loved it, you're going to love this one too. As with in line with her typical style, haunting atmosphere, excellent prose, 3-dimensional characters, and subtle but unrelenting terror that grips you tighter than any offering from the blood & gore genre.
I've one request from Audible: Please add all of the books in Michelle Paver's Chronicles of Ancient Darkness. I'd love to listen to the whole series but some of them are missing in Audible.
Daniel Weyman gave an absolutely phenomenal performance as the narrator. He not only has a beautiful tone but also has the acting talent that brings out all the emotions of the characters. He's now in my top list of narrators that also stars Jim Dale, Simon Vance, and Simon Jones. I cannot pay him a higher compliment. Bravo!
A tragedy that can never be righted
This is the story of two brothers who are taking part in an expedition to climb one of the lesser known Himalayan Mountains and following in the footsteps of an ill-fated expedition that took place twenty years earlier. The main protagonist is Stephen, an embittered man who has recently broken off his engagement because he felt he was becoming too much like his brother Kits. Whereas Stephen is intelligent and introspective, Kits is a natural and popular leader who nonetheless has the flaw of being snobbish and dismissing anybody who does not fit in with his class and his view about how things should be done. From the outset the Stephen is blighted with a sense of foreboding after meeting one of the survivors of the earlier expedition but intends to push on regardless in order to satisfy his sense of rivalry with his brother.
Michelle Paver takes us back to a time when men had been brutalised by the First World War and an imperialist world, but had learnt none of the lessons, instead desperately clinging onto the old order. Their casual racism and cruelty is shocking but even the privileged are trapped in a system of inheritance that only favours one beneficiary and destroys any possiblity of sibling love.

The body of a young woman is found on the streets of East London, in the shadow of the City's gleaming towers. No ID on her, just hard-earned cash. But there is no doubting the ferocity of the attack.
DI Simon Fenchurch takes charge but, as his team tries to identify her and piece together her murder, they're faced with cruel indifference at every turn - nobody cares about yet another dead prostitute. To Fenchurch, however, she could just as easily be Chloe, his daughter still missing after ten years, whose memory still haunts his days and nights, his burning obsession having killed his marriage.
When a second body is discovered, Fenchurch must peel back the grimy layers shrouding the London sex trade, confronting his own traumatic past while racing to undo a scheme larger, more complex and more evil than anything he could possibly have imagined.

    A waste of time
The lead detective is plagued by problems with acid reflux and, in tense moments, hearing drums in his head. These issues are referred to constantly. The story appears to be a fairly run-of-the-mill police procedural, but takes a turn toward the absurd (not intentionally) toward the end. My advice: don't bother.
    Tedious
Just simply over done. Repetitiveness became unbearably annoying until you don't care about any of the characters.
    Riveting whodunnit set in UK
Protagonist is divorced 42-year DI with a past that continues to haunt him and affect his past relationships (with estranged ex-wife, widowed father) and police colleagues. He checks the system daily to see if the 10 year old case of his kidnapped 8-year old daughter, Chloe, has developed any leads, a case his retired policeman father is also doggedly pursuing.
Despite his past, Fenchurch is a not morose, but an intriguing character, who listens to Morrissey, attends football matches with his father and chastises his colleagues for not shielding a victim from onlookers at the first crime scene. He is sympathetic without dipping into pathos.
I couldn't quite give it 5 stars, as I quickly tired of the refrain "same as it ever was" (the author must love Talking Heads) and the ending, which I found a bit far-fetched.
Michael Page, a seasoned narrator, is a favorite of mine and does not disappoint here. He handles a variety of accents, from the posh private school to the Scottish brogue aptly and doesn't sound like a cartoon character when he voices the female characters, as so many male narrators do.
    Unlikely story line' poor narration.
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Would definitely change the narrator and put a few pauses between spoken phrases, and, either make no attempt to "act" the story - just read it, or get a reader who can produce different and distinct character voices.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
In general,it was a bit ridiculous. Plot was over contrived and got worse as the story progressed.
How could the performance have been better?
    See prior comments.
Could you see The Hope That Kills being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
Not likely a movie or TV series, story was just not good enough
    Quite good
I liked this more than I thought I would. Great start to a new series.
I like Fenchurch and the cast of characters in his CID unit. Even his boss.

    Publisher's Summary:
Hailed by the best-selling writer William Kent Krueger as "the year's best thriller debut", this roller-coaster listen features a Jack Reacher-like drifter protagonist with lethal skills whose mission to rescue his abducted sister pits him against a meth kingpin seeking to control all the trade in the Western United States.
Sixteen years. That's how long Clyde Barr has been away from Colorado's thick forests, alpine deserts, and craggy peaks, running from a past filled with haunting memories. But now he's back, having roamed across three continents as a hunter, an adventurer, a soldier of fortune, and, most recently, an unjustly imprisoned convict. And once again his past is reaching out to claim him.
By the light of a flickering campfire, Clyde receives a frantic phone call for help from Jen, the youngest of his three older sisters. Then the line goes dead. Clyde doesn't know how much time he has. He doesn't know where Jen is located. He doesn't even know who has her. All he knows is that nothing short of dying will stop him from saving her.
Tagging along with Clyde on this strange, desperate, against-all-odds rescue mission is a young woman named Allie, whose motivations for hurtling into harm's way are fascinatingly complex. As the duo races against the clock, it is Allie who gets Clyde to see what he has become and what he can be.

    This book is painfully stupid
It had the promise of a good book - But the scenarios kept getting dumber and dumber. Stupid to the point that I am angry at anyone giving this book a good review.
I've already wasted too much time on this - I guess this review is for people that expect more
    Not MY Jack Reacher!!!!!
    Any additional comments?
What a HUGE disappointment. I bought this because of my great love of the Jack Reacher stories. But imagine this... Jack Reacher is involved with a lot of drug people, smokes, and is sort of a creep (although maybe he gets better). That's Clyde Barr. I could not keep listening. Beware. If you don't like reading about junkies, this may not be the book for you. The world may be full of that crap, but I'm not going to spend my time reading about it. This is the third book in a row I want to return, but don't feel it's fair. I was on such a good role too.
    Dying for next book
A great book for what looks to be an incredible series with a great lead character. I hope the second installment is on the way.
Great action with plenty of character
What made the experience of listening to Nothing Short of Dying the most enjoyable?
The detail to build characters and the descriptions of the surroundings, the environments was a character in itself. The narration was spot on, this is one of my favorite audio books this year.
What did you like best about this story?
The characters and the description of their environment. The mountains, trees, cabins I felt like I was there along for the dangerous ride.
Which character as performed by Jeremy Bobb was your favorite?
Jeremy Bobb was just flat out great I'm a fan now.

    Members Reviews:
    Gripping and very original storytelling
What an original concept this book is! And the narration really put me into the story. Well done and well performed.
Fun alternate history with a few flaws
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next one.
Alternate histories can be tricky but this one worked well; the Roman Empire in the modern world was believable and appealing. The EUS is a xenophobic and paranoid place. Given the chance, why would you not up-sticks and move to Roma Nova? This country is just cool. Its kept up with and even surpassed the rest of the modern world in some ways while still keeping its traditions and principles. And I can really get behind a story set in a society where the women and men are on equal footing (as Roma Nova is a matriarchal society, the women have an edge though).
The characters are varied and nicely fleshed out. Karens adaptation to her new home and its traditions is admirable. Anyone whos lived in a culture different from their own knows how hard those adjustments can be. Karen didnt just adapt, she embraced it and you could feel how richer her life was for it. There are so many characters that it was a little hard to keep track of them so a 2nd go with this book is definitely in order for me.
Ms. Thorburn has a very nice and melodic voice. The accents are good and each character has distinctive voice. When she sticks to reading, shes excellent.
What I didn't like about this book:
    1. Karens transformation from ordinary office schlep to bad*ss soldier woman is not believable. In one chapter shes cowering and dying and 90 minutes later shes mastered hand-to-hand combat and is working undercover cmon.
    2. Karen comes across as arrogant and obnoxious after her transformation. I really struggled to like her during some parts of the story. Maybe that's a problem with narration and the written would be different?
    3. Karens reasons for entering into her new (post transformation) career dont make sense to me. While any reasonable person knows drug smuggling is an awful thing, I just dont understand her motivation for throwing herself into dangerous under-cover work.
    4. Renschman is a pretty bad villain. Not bad as in what a great character; hes so scary but bad as in youve failed multiple times; please just give up now . And hes one of those villains who wont stop talking (no wonder hes thwarted so often). But I get his motivation so hes not totally unbelievable.
    5. Some of the sub-plots ended pretty abruptly.

    Narrator drove me crazy!
The story was good. Lots of twists! The narrator, however, was awful! There was no emotion whatsoever, and I thought if he mispronounced "grimace" one more time, I was going to scream! There a few other words he screwed up too. Was very distracting!
    Political Thriller with a Twist
I loved the story but sometimes the timing between chapters seemed rushed. It did have a happy ending.
    Very Engaging
Good depth of characters. Depicts the crazy political and selfish world of today. While the author over used the word grimace and the reader mispronounced it, I could overlook the blunder because the story outshined the error.

    The Abduction
I like the story but the narrator drove me crazy pronouncing grimaced. Honestly, it was so distracting I almost stopped listening. Otherwise, a bit predictable but overall a good storyz
