Pauling calls the number and reaches a woman whose husband has gone missing. Even stranger, the woman claims she didn't contact Pauling and has no idea who Jack Reacher is.
Intrigued, Pauling begins to investigate, and when the woman becomes the target of the same men who may have abducted her husband, Pauling recruits Michael Tallon, a former special ops soldier. Pauling and Tallon quickly realize they're dealing with much more than a missing persons case, and soon they're in a deadly race to stop a terrifying act of mass murder.

Great new starter book for fans of Jack Reacher
Great new starter book for fans of Jack Reacher. Ames writes a short novel where Jack Reacher is only referenced but the perfect short story to see if we would like his (Ames) style. My answer is YES. I will add his other Reacher Cases to my reading in hopes that the books fill out a little longer and that eventually the reference to Jack Reacher will not be needed in order to generate interest in Ames' books. Lauren Pauling and Michael Tallon are intriguing characters in their own right and hopefully we will see more of them. For $2.00 its a great read.
Fast paced
Invoking Jack Reacher seems more a marketing ploy than anything. The story doesnât need it. Besides a couple minor inconsistencies, a smooth flowing story.
Great story in the vein of Reacher books!
Great book that was intriguing throughout as the author developed the story. Pauling and Tallon are great characters that fit in with any book that includes the name Reacher. While Reacher doesn't appear except as a reference you will appreciate the similarity to the style of the stories. If you like the Reacher books I think most people will think similarly of this one. I look forward to more if the same from Dan Ames in the future.
GREAT READ!!!
Don't miss this book! Characters Lauren Pauling and Michael Tallon team up in this great story. Author set up a true mystery that keeps the reader guessing throughout. Easily read and enjoyable. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book, but purchased a copy as well.
Lee Child is a hard man to forget, but Dan Ames fills in admirably
I had my doubts, as I always do, when a writer tries to fill the shoes of a world-class, established writer, whether it be Stieg Larsson, William Manchester or in this case, Lee Child. But Dan Ames is a veteran and up to the task of putting together a Child-like shortened novel under the Jack Reacher franchise. Once I got into it I no longer thought about a fill-in author behind the plot and narrative. Will look forward to another Ames/Child collaboration. I sent Dan an email and he graciously responded.
