"Startlingly good...tense...ingenious." (Sunday Express)

"Alistair MacLean is a magnificent storyteller." (Sunday Mirror)

Members Reviews:

Fabulous adventure story from the master!

A tense, gripping and fun adventure story. The narrator does a great job with the voices and characters.

Next...

Alistair Maclean, nothing else really needs saying. I grew up reading these as my introduction to spy/thriller/mystery and having them begin to be Audibled is just cause for a happy dance. The narration was easy to listen to and thus, enjoyable. Now to keep my eye out for which other they will do... hoping to see The Golden Rendezvous, and Way to a Dusty Death...

Anyway, more credits, and cash, will be exchanged for more Mavcean's.

Brilliant

Another excellent work by Mark Billingham - tackling a tough subject with great skill and compassion

Keep sharing Tom Thorne with us Mark

Poor reading

Would you try another book written by Mark Billingham or narrated by the narrators?

I had to give up as the narration was dull and unispiring. Earlier Thorne novels were much better. Some parts of what I manged to plough through were really quite turgid and seemed to take ages to get to any significant action.

Has Love Like Blood put you off other books in this genre?

Not the genre just the performance

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of the narrators?

Robert Glenister

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Why bother

Strong research, impassioned views yet delivering twists

Another strong work. Some of the twists jarred the flow for me - but understandable. Thorne is on his home turf. The tension between cosy, familiar and hackneyed or formulaic is tackled well by Billingham, by submersion in a subculture of crime - this time of 'honour violence' for hire. Couple of story arcs seemed stretched, but hey! Great audio performance and so much work has gone into it. So many crime writers have to turn out so much, Billingham's standing out for his research and creation of fleshed out characters in today's London.

Love like blood

A most intriguing story which is apparently true! It is scary, somewhat violent but also gives us an insider look at other culture. I hope that honour killings are sorted out, prior to the death of someone, and that people will realise that no matter the reason, it is MURDER! Great writing and narration and very up to date with today's events and our way of living.

Brilliant storytelling - serious subject

Superb narration by Mr Billingham, et al. Tough subject and didn't see the twist coming!

When Petri Ilveskivi is murdered in the street on his way to a city-planning meeting, Maria Kallio, commander of Espoo's Violent Crime Unit, and her team are first on the scene. Almost immediately, her focus is on the band of skinheads who brutally attacked the Finnish commissioner and his husband three years earlier. Did they finally finish the hate crime they started? As she juggles her obligations as a wife, mother, and detective, Maria suggests to her superiors that what first appears to be a random assault may actually be something more sinister. When she's met with silence and higher-ups take her off the case, she disobeys orders and investigates on her own, putting both her family and herself at risk. In this captivating tale in the Maria Kallio series, someone is protecting a killer. Can Maria track them down before the next victim falls?

Members Reviews:

Rock solid suspense thriller!

Before I go, the 7th novel in the Maria Kallio series by Finnish author Leena Lehtolainen, was released today in English. I have written reviews of the prior 6 novels in the Detective Mario Kallio series. This police procedural/suspense thriller does not disappoint. The publisher's summary does a good job setting up the novel, so I will not add to it other than to write that this novel contains more about Kallio's personal life than the seven others combined. Narration by Amy Rubinate is outstanding.

Title: Murder Between the Pages

Author: Josh Lanyon

Narrator: Kale Williams

Language: English

Release date: 03-08-17

Publisher: JustJoshin Publishing, Inc.

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 41 votes

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense

Publisher's Summary:

Felix Day, author of the Constantine Sphinx mysteries, and Leonard Fuller, author of the Inspector Fez mysteries, are bitter rivals and the best of enemies. Both happen to present when a notorious author of roman à clef is shot by an invisible assailant during a signing at historic Marlborough Bookstore.

Even if they weren't both suspects, it's the perfect opportunity to match wits and sleuthing skills.

If only the murderer was equally amused.

Members Reviews:

Josh Lanyon does 1940's fiction Noir.

What made the experience of listening to Murder Between the Pages the most enjoyable?

As much as I love Josh Lanyon, and think that her books are the gold standard of m/m romance, especially her historical books. I am sad to say this one fell a little flat. The 1940's ambiance was present, but the characters felt a little one dimensional. And maybe because this was a shorter story, there wasn't the character background and development that we see from Lanyon's longer stories.I did enjoy it, but its not my favorite of hers.

What other book might you compare Murder Between the Pages to and why?

Snowball in Hell, the "Doyle and Spain #1" which I loved, and so wish had a sequel, and also her Holmes and Moriarity series.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Kale Williams?

Anyone. Although he had a nice well modulated voice it was very confusing because the 2 main characters sounded exactly alike. And I was very confused, not realizing until the 3 or 4th chapter, that the POV switched back and forth. I never was able to discern differences in Fuller and Day, marking them with their own personalities. For me the narrator did a poor job of making each a separate persona.

The plot was interesting, and the MC's had great potential. And I am still and always a Lanyon fan. I wish I had read it, instead of listened to this one.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Murder, and mystery in a bookstore murder, and authors become amateur sleuths.

Good mystery and romance

Another great mystery/romance by Josh Lanyon. It is also historical, as it is based right after WWII and includes the great colloquiums of that time. This is an enemies to lovers trope, heavy on the mystery (murder within a locked room) with a secondary budding romance and the quintessential JL HFN ending. The narrator does a good job and I have enjoyed his work with other books. However, there was very little distinction between the MCs voices. So since there were alternating POVs, it was sometimes difficult to determine who was speaking if you missed the name at the beginning of the chapter. Overall, an enjoyable listen.

Sweet historical mystery

A cosy story of the post-war English author/detective variety. It's hard to judge the book itself, though I generally love Lanyon's work. The trouble is that each chapter is told from the perspective of one of two protagonists and because the narrator doesn't differentiate between them in voice, I was constantly confused about which one was speaking. Most of the other characters sounded like Jimmy Stewart, which was also confusing. I listened over 2 days but had to replay the last chapter and I'm still not sure who was who.

Entertaining but went nowhere

I was entertained by this Josh Lanyon story but i didn't love it.

Terrifying

great performance of an incredibly gripping and chilling story. brilliant and completely distracting and diverting

Download this book NOW

I am. It sure what the equivalent of a page turner is in the audio book world but this book is that. My poor dog has walked miles in the last few days as I could not bare to stop listening to this fascinating, gripping, emotional tale.

Hannah Murray is the only person I could imagine telling this tale. The only sad thing is that I have just listened to the best book of 2017 & it isn't even the end of Jan.

What a delight - what a surprise

When I started listening to Ali Land's Good me Bad me, I thought I had made a big mistake in buying the book. I found Hannah Murray's soft monotone voice infuriating and off-putting. How wrong I was - 'never judge a book by its cover' - excuse the near pun.

Hannah Murray's reading of this engrossing and must listen too story was perfect.

So, my only complaint is that it is 4.30am and I only wish I had started listening earlier yesterday so that I could at least have had a decent night's sleep. I'm knackered

Listened in one day

Loved this book. Finished it in one day. Narration is monotone but I felt it really gave the book a dark atmosphere.

Haunting. Horrifying. Utterly brilliant.

If you like thrillers, you will be hard-pressed to find better than this. The narrator does a brilliant job, and I wish I could give more than 5 stars for it. Even if you've read the print version, I would recommend listening to this, it adds so much more to it.

Just, please, before you download, understand that the narrator is portraying the character of a deeply disturbed young girl, and that is the reason for the monotone delivery. Reviewers saying they couldn't listen to it and hated it because of the narrator are completely missing the point.

Please note: This audiobook is in Spanish.
