Hardly has the team begun to unravel the complicated motives of the suspects than there is a second brutal killing, and the whole investigation is jeopardized when Dalgliesh is faced with a danger more insidious and as potentially fatal as murder.
This eagerly awaited successor to the international best seller The Murder Room displays all the qualities that lovers of P.D. James's novels the world over have come to expect: sensitive characterization, an exciting and superbly structured plot, and vivid evocation of place.
    Critic Reviews:
"Each new Dalgleish novel should be treated as a gift by mystery fans everywhere." (Booklist)

    Outstanding!
P.D. James is the finest of all current mystery writers! And this continuation of the Adam Dagliesh mysteries does not disappoint. The story is brilliantly written, the action is fast-paced and riveting, the words on the page so eloquent and beautiful you will want to listen again and again. A mystery novel that reads like literature. Simply wonderful.
    Another solid effort
There are few authors that describe a scene like James. You can almost taste the salt spray and smell the ocean breeze. I enjoyed the plot and especially the characters. While I don't find it to be "edge of the seat" it drew me in and held me to the end. Also, I love Charles Keating as the reader, especially over the other gentlemen who is on other James titles. Defintely a solid 4+.
    A bit long, but
P.D. James has one of the most beautiful prose styles of any mystery writer I have read. Her descriptions of people, landscapes and situations always amaze me. Her psychological profiles offer to explain the deep, dark purposes of cold-hearted murderers. I really had a difficult time determining who actually did the nasty deed. But as beautiful as her writing is, the book seemed to drag on just a bit too long.
    Excellent listen!
PD James is a master writer! This book is full of well flesh-out characters behaving in believable ways in an excellent whodunit. The story will stand alone, but fans of the Adam Dalgleish stories will enjoy this adventure of the Scotland Yard inspector. James' complex characters add even more layers and nuances and we come to know AD and his team even better in "The Lighthouse." Danger, adventure, great characters, terrific writing-- who could ask for more?
    P. D. James. At her best. So good that you would in court swear you were there
Interesting and informative adding to one's store of knowledge of area and era, while at the same time giving nothing away until a reasonable, always surprising, yet satisfactory end end.
Narration is excellent Absolutely the best
    More, please....many more

    Publisher's Summary:
Callander Square is the second of Anne Perry's Charlotte and Thomas Pitt mysteries. Full of well-drawn and convincing characters, Callander Square offers a finely crafted recreation of Victorian England. The bodies of two newborn babies have been found in a park in the fashionable London neighborhood of Callander Square. While Inspector Thomas Pitt is fighting to get the square's aristocratic residents to speak with him, his pretty, well-born wife Charlotte decides to do some detective work of her own. Soon she is unearthing secrets in every house on the square while Thomas tries to discover what would drive a person to murder.

The Pitt Family at their best!
All the best elements of a Thomas and Charlotte Pitt mystery -- sympathetic characters, inexcusable characters, bounders, twits, heroines, and heroes -- all here and embroiled in a convoluted and historically engaging mystery.
Filled with 19th century British social conventions and police procedures set against a London backdrop.
This book is Anne Perry at her mysterious best!
    Engaging
Callander Square is book two in Anne Perrys Thomas and Charlotte Pitt series. The book was published in 1980. The book covers Victorian Londons neighborhoods rich secrets. .
Murders dont take place in fashionable Callander Square, so Inspector Pitts wife Charlotte couldnt resist finding out why one had. The plot revolves around the discovery of two infants bodies buried in the square of a high society neighborhood. The Pitts are on the case. The book is more about Victorian society, how they lived both the servants and the masters, than about solving the mystery.
Perry covers a great deal about women in Victorian England. The author also tosses in some information about proper etiquette in the Victorian time, such as the social rules of calling and leaving cards. Perry also covers what was important to women but not to the men. It is as if there were two separate worlds, the women in the house and outside of the house.
Perry is an excellent writer and she magically transports the reader to see what it was like living in Victorian London. One of my favorite narrators Davina Porter narrated the book.
    Very good victorian mystery!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, if that person enjoys both mysteries and Victorian stories.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Callander Square?
This is not *one* moment--but there are series of incidents in which Pitt (the policeman--who is not yet viewed with respect in this era) finds a way to stay calm in front of people who find his very presence outrageous, due to social class standards still in existence. By not reacting to their snobbery or their biased response to his presence, he is able to obtain either information--or even, to some degree, their assistance. Of course, his wife, Charlotte, has her own way of being with these people that does not threaten them, but that's all part of the story.
What does Davina Porter bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Well, her ability to do many voices is quite good. Her diction is just slightly less crisp than some narrators so I had to listen hard (and on a few occasions back up to listen again) to hear what she said. However, I find the softness of her voice (despite the lack of crisp diction) to be very calm and easy listening.

    Publisher's Summary:
Homicide detective Luc Claudel believes the bones are historic. Not his case, not his concern. But when Tempe examines the bones in her lab, she establishes approximate age with Carbon 14. Further study of tooth enamel tells her where the women were born. If she's right, Claudel has three recent murders on his hands. Definitely his case.
Detective Andrew Ryan is acting mysteriously. What are those private phone calls he takes in the other room, and why does he suddenly disappear just when Tempe is beginning to hope he might be a permanent part of her life? Looks like more lonely nights for Tempe and Birdie, her cat.
As Tempe searches for answers in both her personal and professional lives, she finds herself drawn deep into a web of evil from which there may be no escape. Women have disappeared, never to return...Tempe may be next.
    Critic Reviews:
"What's best about Reichs, and often unappreciated in reviews, is not the informative detail that she brings to Tempe's forensic sleuthing, though that's certainly engrossing. It's the same well-observed detail and incisive analysis applied to other aspects of the story." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Disappointing
Having read Reichs' previous novels I was extremely disappointed with this book - the story is quite frankly poor and very predictable. The so called climax is dull and boring and I was just glad when it finally finished, except that I wished I hadn't wasted my time. Most authors get better with time, but based on the evidence of her latest offering, it appears that Reichs is an exception. Not a patch on her previous novels. Use your credits on something else - this really isn't worth a listen.
    Monday Mourning
Kathy Reichs is a good author and this Tempe series book lives up to her reputation. The biggest complaint that I have is not with the book but rather with the speaker. I suggest that the next time a book contains any French you have someone do the speaking that can at least pretend to speak French. The pronunciation is really bad and it interferred with what should have been enjoyable listening.
    Good Book, Good Reading
Story was good. Reading was very good. I have a teenage daughter and this story did give me the creeps a bit. Kept my attention during the commute and walking.
    love Kathy Reichs
Where does Monday Mourning rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Good, I've Listen or read most of them
What was one of the most memorable moments of Monday Mourning?
Trying to figure out if I read it already!
    Pretty Good
Overall, I thought the story line was good and I didn't mind the forensic details and drawn out details since I was listening to the book to pass time. I also liked this narrator.

    Publisher's Summary:
The cloistered grounds of the convent have traditionally represented a place of faith and peace. Now, that peace is shattered as two nuns are found, one dead, one mortally wounded. The killings appear to be without motive, without an obvious suspect, and are further complicated by the murder and mutilation of a third woman. Together, medical examiner Maura Isles and intense, moody homicide detective Jane Rizzoli (both introduced in earlier Tess Gerritsen novels) uncover an ancient horror that connects these terrible slaughters. As long-buried secrets come to light, Isles finds herself drawn inexorably towards the heart of an investigation that strikes closer to home, and towards a dawning revelation about the killer's identity too shattering to consider.

    Outstanding
I love murder mysteries and this one was top notch. Everything about this book held my interest and I could hardly stop listening to it. Worth the read.
    Top-Notch Tess
The who-dunnit tension was nicely maintained throughout. This is truly one of Gerritsen's best, and certainly the best of her Rizzoli series that I have read.
The narrator, Anna Fields was also ideal for this book. Her intonation and pace were always just right for any given scene. I could see the whole book in my mind's eye, thanks to Ms. Fields.
    Great Read
Another good one for Tess. I enjoyed all the twists and turns of the plot. She holds Rizzoli to character. No matter what is going on in her personal life she still finds time to get a jab in at even the most innocent seeming villian. No one goes unpunished in some way with her and that's satisfying. Some of her points make you want to say "you go girl".
This is a great book and you can't go wrong with it.
    Five stars:
The humorous passages are hilarious, Dr. Gerritsen's imagination covers even more ground in this novel, and you won't guess the resolution as all the parts come together thoughtfully. I only regret that I did not "read" this novel in order of publication.
    Horrible Narration!
Would you try another book from Tess Gerritsen and/or Anna Fields?
Yes, I enjoy Tess Gerritsen books, but hated Anna Fields and her attempt at different voices.
Would you recommend The Sinner to your friends? Why or why not?
I would recommend the book in hard copy; not on Audible.
Would you be willing to try another one of Anna Fieldss performances?
No, absolutely not. I couldn't even finish listening to this one! Wish I would return it.

    Publisher's Summary:
The body of an elderly woman is found dismembered in a Virginia landfill. Scarpetta initially believes the clues mirror that of a serial killer she's tracked before. But upon further investigation, she discovers puzzling pox-like erruptions on the woman's body that, perhaps, point in another direction.
When the killer contacts her via e-mail, Scarpetta enlists the aid of her computer-savvy niece, Lucy, to help track this monster through cyberspace. Learning that the Virginia victim was exposed to a high-tech virus that might unleash an epidemic, Scarpetta realizes she's dealing with a sophisticated mind.
Her investigation leads her from the government's biological defense facility in Utah, to Atlanta's Center for Disease Control, and eventually to quarrantine, when it is discovered that Scarpetta has been exposed to this fatal virus. Along the way, she's forced to deal with the unscrupulous ambitions of a slick FBI agent, Lucy's problems, and her own turbulent feelings for Agent Wesley Benton.
Unnatural Exposure is the 8th book in the Kay Scarpetta series.
    Critic Reviews:
"Cool, abrasive, with an edge sharper than a Stryker saw." (The New York Times Book Review)
"In this return to the luridly fascinating world of Dr. Kay Scarpetta, Cornwell delivers the goods." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Stilted Narration
While the story was exciting and full with deep characters the narration by C.J. Critt was stilted, awkward and distracting. Very un-enjoyable.
    narrator
I like the story a lot but the narrator is awful. She sounds mad, and when reading the part of Kay she sounds like she is talking down to everyone.
    Interesting Story Ruined by Narrator
This is the first time I have written a review on a book before I have finished it. I can't WAIT to finish this one! Not to see how it ends, but to put myself out of my misery of listening to this awful narrator who is ruining an otherwise potentially interesting mystery novel.
I like the Kay Scarpetta character, and enjoy forensic mysteries, and Patricia Cornwell's novel could very well be a very good book. However, C.J. Critt is butchering the experience of listening to the story so thoroughly, that one many never know how good it could be.
The voices she gives to all the characters, especially to Kay's love interest Benton Wesley, would be laughable if it wasn't so annoying. I found myself wondering what she could possibly find attractive about a man who talkes like he does, until I remind myself that it is narrator botching the voices so badly that they are unlikeable. Frankly, I don't even like her "regular" voice that she has given to Scarpetta. The visual of the Scarpetta one gets from her voice is one of a hard, rather unattractive, difficult, impersonal character. I would like to like Kay, but Ms. Critt is making it very difficult.
I noticed that Kate Reading reads the rest of Cornwell's unabridged novels, and in the brief listen she sounds like an improvement. In "The Scarpetta Factor" the narrator changes again, to Kate Burton, who has a lovely voice, but it is difficult from a small clip to know how she handles the male characters. Hopefully, both of these two narrators will do better than Ms. Critt, and make the listening of Cornwell's novels more enjoyable. One thing is for certain...

The first and best Elizabeth George
This is the book that made me an Elizabeth George fan. It's power and force are in it's treatment of the subject of sexual abuse in a very human, psychologically complex way. Read it first, preferably unabridged.
    Go With the Paper Version
I really enjoy Elizabeth George's work, but the this audiobook is much too condensed and has poor audio quality.
    YUCK, UGH, DOUBLE YUCK!!!
This story started out sad and went downhill. I don't even want to describe it.
I thought the Inspector Lynley series would be good -- it's certainly popular and has been around for a while. However, after listening to this first book in the series, I cannot understand why. The book is well written, but the subject matter and most of the characters in this book are depressing. The details of what happens in the story and why are gruesome and revolting. I won't be listening to any more of this series. In fact, I'm trying to find out how I can delete this book from my Audible library. With all of that said, the narrator was outstanding.
    Great book; sorry it's abridged
Great performance and very good tale. Very disappointed that it isn't the full length version.
It was not awful, but I had to slow the speed.
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
    Fans of Elizabeth George.
Would you recommend A Great Deliverance to your friends? Why or why not?
No. Too many characters to develop for a short story.
What three words best describe Derek Jacobis performance?
    OK, pretty good.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
    disappointment.

    Crushed is the true feeling
This book keeps you on the edge. You want to know what is coming next. I liked getting to know the characters. You will not be disappointed.
    The abridged version is bad
You miss so much of the story. It's a great SB book, but can't even listen to the abridged version after hearing the unabridged. I'd buy it again in a minute if they come out with the unabridged version. Don't waste your money on this one.
    Where is the rest?
I was disappointed in only being able to listen to a small portion of the book.
    Not Sandra Brown's best work!!!
I gave the book three stars. I with I could have done three and a half stars. This book isn't one of my favorites. It's possible that this book wasn't that good because they only had the abridged version available for download. This isn't a book I will listen to again. I do recommend it because it's a quick read/listen. It's worth the credit in my opinion because if you really don't like it you may return it. It's an okay read.
    Good story.

Why has no one reported him missing? And why wasn't he wearing any clothes? Absent evidence of foul play, the troopers are inclined to call it death by misadventure; Kate's instincts suggest otherwise, leading her down a path that requires her to confront issues of community, faith, and free will.
    Members Reviews:
Very little story, very much preaching.
What was most disappointing about Dana Stabenows story?
I love the Kate Shugak series, but not this one. Stabenow spends the entire book minus a few chapters justifying her view of God, religion, the Bible, and those who believe in Christ. I suppose if I agreed with her, I'd like the book. But I think she's completely wrong. If I wanted to listen to her brand of "religion" I'd read a non-fiction book. And I very much object to her using characters and a story line that I love to try to convince me of something that is not true.
    Not one of my favorites
It was Kate so I liked it as always but it also didn't end in a way that I liked. It made sense and all the lose ends were tied up but......
Marguerite Gavin did her usual wonderful job narrating.
I do wish these were coming out quicker. The last one was last August and now this one in March. Hope we get another in August.
    Opposite View to Other Reviewers.
I liked this Kate Shaguk book better than all the previous ones, which is the opposite view from that held by many other reviewers. Yes, this book can come off as slightly preachy. Yes, it involves religious fanatics in Alaska which isn't a new idea. However, it also explores Kate's character more than any of the previous books. We learned a little about her childhood and how it affected her views as an adult. Character development is always my favorite part of a book and in this installment of the series Kate is fleshed out more than in the previous books.
Also, a big bonus: Bobby is back and I love him.
    Z
Well told tale of religious fanaticism in the bush. Well told tale of religious fanaticism in the Alaskan bush country. Well told tale of religious fanaticism in the bush. Well told tale of religious fanaticism in the bush. Al most as fanatic as audible's insistence that I write a lot of words for nothing. Short, quick, easy listening, nothing special. This is a good book for running errands around town.
    Another great addition
Adele Abbott has written another great addition to the Witch PI series. The stories are original and the characters are likable and quirky. Hannah Platts is spot on and brings the characters to life. I highly recommend this book and the entire series.
    This is the cutest series
The world is fun, characters are quirky, narration is great, the romance does not make me blush, I absolutely suggest reading this series. I become more enamored with each book.
    Loving the series
Just discovered this series a few weeks ago and so far I'm enjoying it. Kind of Hermione Granger crossed with a Harry Dresdenish feel. Some great characters that you really start to care about. Looking forward to seeing where it goes from here.
    still really good

When the game warden arrives on the scene, he finds blood in the roadbut both the driver and the deer have vanished. And the state trooper assigned to the accident appears strangely unconcerned. The details of the disappearance seem eerily familiar. Seven years earlier, a jury convicted lobsterman Erland Jefferts of the rape and murder of a wealthy college student and sentenced him to life in prison. For all but his most fanatical defenders, justice was served. But when the missing woman is found brutalized in a manner that suggests Jefferts may have been framed, Bowditch receives an ominous warning from state prosecutors to stop asking questions.
For Bowditch, whose own life was recently shattered by a horrific act of violence, doing nothing is not an option. His clandestine investigation reopens old wounds between Maine locals and rich summer residents and puts both his own life and that of the woman he loves in jeopardy. As he closes in on his quarry, he suddenly discovers how dangerous his opponents are, and how far they will go to prevent him from bringing a killer to justice.

If you can't do an accent well, just DON'T
    Any additional comments?
I'm from Maine, and I have loved these first two Doiron books! And I adore being able to listen while I'm doing other things, or don't have time to read. But...
PLEASE, if you don't know how to pronounce Maine place names, ask. And for God's sake, if you can't do a Maine accent, just don't! The attempt by this narrator to produce a plausible accent was just painful! It was something like a cross between South Boston, Rhode Island and New York.
Frankly, it ruined the book for me. I'm sorry to say, I think I'm going to have *read* the rest of the Mike Bowditch books because I just can't take it.
    Maine Game Warden solves murder!!
Maine Game Warden, Mike Bowditch is just recovering from dealing with his notorious father in THE POACHER'S SON. His girlfriend has decided to give him a second chance to spend more time at home, and to be "safe" in his job. Now negatively labeled as "the poacher's son", he is trying to live down this reputation, but this is difficult as he is once again fighting the current within his area.
Mike was called to the scene of an accident between a driver and a deer, but for some strange reason the girl has left the scene. But did she really leave on her own, as she has been found brutally murdered in one of the Maine coast's "summer cabins"---huge summer homes for the vacationing rich. Her married lover is found in a four wheeler with his throat slit. The authorities want to call this a murder/suicide, but Mike finds the girl's murder eerily like another murder that happened a number of years ago.
