Knit One Kill Two: A Knitting Mystery, Book 1

I agree- give us more Sefton!! Ms. Sefton's mysteries are very easy reading and listening, but at the same time keeps one guessing. All of her books are very descriptive especially her "Knitting" series. As a knitter I wish I could find a shop like the one she describes. I especially like the reader and look for her narration in choosing an audible.

Pease obtain series 2 through 8. I've already contacted Audible and received a prompt reply as to why only two have been read. Please keep trying to get the publisher to release more.

I love this cozy mystery

I have all Ms. Steftons books, and they translated to audio perfectly. How can a murder mystery make me feel so calm? The discription of the yarn, the colors and the beauty she see's in the mountain's, the sky. I love them and cant waite for more to come on audio!!

Details were repeated too many times. Multiple characters but not very interesting. The story was not very interesting.

Was on it's way to a Five - But it's a good Four!

I like the smart way it was written. I also love the way it was read. I read a bunch of reviews and there are two I don't understand. One is the person claiming it was too much of psychology and not enough thriller. Maybe there is a good horror book out there for them with people running around stabbing people. I like books that make me think, and this one did. The other one was about the narrator. I was really worried until I started listening.

I love Lincoln Rhyme but...

I love Jeffery Deaver and was excited to listen to The Burning Wire. I don't know whether it was "listening" to the lists (which are always a part of the LIncoln Rhyme books) instead of "reading" them or whether the story itself just didn't work for me. In any case, I didn't make it all the way through this production and will pick up the book in hard copy so that I can finish it properly.

A good read

I like Jeffery Deaver and enjoyed this book. However I agree that the narration wasn't the best. I would download it again but not put it on my list of favorites.

Good book; disappointing narration

I'm always enthusiastic when a new Deaver book is released. Unfortunately, Dennis Boutsikaris doesn't share my enthusiasm. More often than not, he doesn't even bother to pronounce the hero's name right - Rhyme is often pronounced "Rahm"(like the Chief of Staff) making scenes with "Ron the recruit" difficult to distinguish. And this narrator doesn't worry about making any effort with voice timbre or even accents, so often there are several characters in a scene speaking with the same voice. Very lazy work.

The book is a four-star winner with some very creepy moments and Deaver's mastery of suspense is in evidence. I'll be thinking twice before I plug anything in. But the final moments are very positive and hopefully will lead to more Rhyme books - just not ones read by Boutsikaris.

Really entertaining

I really enjoyed this book. Great Humor, romance, quirky who dunnit twists and great characters. I had originally started this series on the 11th book and got hooked so I went back to the 1st one and have listened to them all. I've come to enjoy Marguerite Gavin's interpretations of each character.

One of the better Shugak books.

I keep returning to these books despite the fact that they are up and down in quality and at times I have been completely disappointed. Why? Because I love the premise. I love the small group of characters who live in the park featured in the series. Old Sam, the Aunties, Jim, Johnny, Dinah, Katya and especially Bobby. These characters are unique, funny, stubborn, loyal, mysterious and intriguing. I also love the setting. Alaska has its own life and stands as its own character... and the books in the series that warrant an above average rating are those that focus on the craziness of life in the park. This installment does some of that -- not enough for my liking, but enough to give her 3.3 stars.

Another good book

I liked this book. It's the kind of book you want to read while you're curled up by the fire on a cold winter day. It's not horrifying or erotic, just a smooth read. The author uses enough 'color' in her verbiage to keep you wanting to read more.

Slow and slower until the last few chapters.

this book has to many Kate said, Jim said, Kate said and then Jim said again. etc..... my first read of this author and will probably be my last. I only finished it because I didn't want to WASTE my money... actually stopped toward the end to find something else More interesting..then went back to it to drag thru the ending..

Where does Last Scene Alive rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

Since I have listened to close to 1000 books, it is difficult to know but the book held my interest.

What other book might you compare Last Scene Alive to and why?

The book is up to the standard of the other books in the series so that this book is comparable to it.

What about Therese Plummers performance did you like?

Enjoyable Series

I enjoyed listening to this book in my car. I think the narrator of this series does an awesome job.

Good but still heartbroken

This book was good but I'm still heartbroken from the last book and couldn't enjoy it as much. Maybe I'll be over the other story ending so I can get back to the lightheartedness of the series and enjoy the last two books.

Beautiful

Would you listen to Last Scene Alive again? Why?

Aurora Teagarden is my favorite Charlaine Harris character. This is actually the first audio book I've ever listened to, in the series and in general. The narrator truly BECAME Roe for me. Her voice was crisp, full of personality that I thought only belonged to Roe in my head, and definitely on point. I am beyond impressed.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Charlaine is definitely the queen of writing a story that includes the somewhat mundane details of life and a great problem. It really sucks you into the story. I found myself worrying about Roe's personal problems/life more than the actual mystery. Excellent work.

What about Therese Plummers performance did you like?

Oh, EVERYTHING! Her tone, her pacing, her attention to the details set forth by certain words and phrases. She was incredible. The separation between characters, the continuity with certain voices she made, it was all perfect.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Roe's gaining herself back, and the very realistic pace that it took. She has been through quite a lot and her growth shows well.

Any additional comments?

This is one of my favorite series and I wish it could go on forever, honestly. The minute details, even down to people eating and descriptions of outfits and decor, are what I live for. I also found a new favorite narrator - I'll be listening to the rest of her work!

The Book - 4 Stars; Narration - 3 Stars

My gripes first - the second half of the book is marred by sloppy auditory editing. Sections are repeated which detracts from being engrossed in the tale. The narrator, Joyce Bean, barely makes my score of average; her reading is pretty flat. Now on to the good stuff - the book itself. I read this one as a response to Audible's offer of affordable first-books-in-a-series. I'd probably never have read a Thomas Perry novel had it not been for the opportunity offered at a discount price. That said - I will be reading the next Jane Whitefield novel in the series. I found the protagonist interesting, although not terribly believable, but it is fiction after all. I don't have to think everything that happens in a novel actually could happen in real life. That's part of the entertainment. Give this book a try if you're looking for something a little different than the typical mystery - and if you like your main character to be a capable woman.

What a difference a narrator makes

What would have made Vanishing Act better?

This is the 5th Thomas Perry audiobook I've listened to, and it is the first I didn't love. This isn't his best story, there are some shoddy editing errors (shame on Audible, I expect better), but the real problem was the narration (see below).

Would you be willing to try another book from Thomas Perry? Why or why not?

Of course, every Thomas Perry book I've read or listened to has been good, and several were excellent.

What didnt you like about Joyce Beans performance?

I understand the choice of a female narrator considering the sex of the protagonist, but I can't help but imagine how much better this one would have been with Michael Kramer, who narrates other Perry novels. Joyce Bean can do the sensitive, intellectual side of Jane Whitefield, but reads dramatic scenes distinctively un-dramatically. A bigger problem is that she absolutely cannot do men's voices. I dreaded every conversation with a man because her voice became so grating.

An atmospheric creepy mystery set in Saltmarsh

This engaging story is well written and totally captures the hauntingly lonely sea side life the main character has chosen for herself. She is a forensic archeologist working in the field, lecture hall and with the police as a solver of crime. Her work focuses on working out mysteries from the past and present. The story is heavy on nature, mythology, archeology and spookiness in general. I really enjoyed the narration and way the book unfolded. It held my interest-- as any good page turner should. As the first book in a series it bodes well for readers who enjoy crime stories with a dash of odd characters and brooding nature thrown in. But be aware--it is creepy!

Entertaining but with some reservations

The book holds together pretty well and provides a few heart pounding moments. Suspects abound and the author keeps you somewhat guessing. But the heroine does whine a bit, especially about being fat. Some of the action seems very contrived and the hopeful ending is completely unbelievable. To be believable, the story should have taken place over a few months instead of over 10 years. The worst part is the narrator's attempt at a male Norwegian accent. Because of these problems, I hesitate to recommend the book.

Loved this book!

I've never been a fan of mysteries, but I loves the author's use of details to provide me with a great picture of the characters and places. LOVED IT. Am now reading the Janus Stone and enjoying it just as much.

Interesting Protagonist

Would you consider the audio edition of The Crossing Places to be better than the print version?

Yes. Narrator Jane McDowell was pitch perfect in capturing Ruth's voice.

Any additional comments?

Story a bit slow paced at first, but was an interesting view into the life of independent archaeology prof, Ruth Galloway. Is she contented or lonely? I still can't decide. Different worlds to explore here: archaeology and the desolate salt marshs Ruth calls home.

Excellent mystery

I really enjoyed the plot and found the characters believable. The backdrop of the Norfolk salt marshes created a wonderful damp wind blown atmosphere and in my mind's eye I could see it's beauty and feel it. The narration by Jane McDowell was just right for me. An excellent mystery.

If your looking for Sookie leave this series alone

Lilly is a woman with a traumatized past who overcame much, and is just trying to learn to live with her demons. She is intelligent, and a fighter, not wanting to ever be at the mercy of any one again. I'm up to the 5th book in the series. Lilly Bard is a difficult character, and not a charming or sweet thing, she is tough and doesn't take things for granted. I thing Charlaine Harris is an amazing writer and can create interesting characters. I'm really enjoying this series, sorry it will end with book five, but who knows maybe Ms Harris will decide to continue. I like very much.

Started with promise

I am a big Charlaine Harris fan, I was very excited when this became available, it started with promise, proceeded to dry and ended flat.

Charlaine has a dry sense of humor that she normally weaves through out her books, along with intrigue and guise, and this book was sadly lacking her normal luster.

As a side note this is not a supernatural book, which was actually intriguing for me at first since I am used to her sci-fi/fantasy books, but as I said this book was for me disappointing.

Good, straight-forward mystery

This is the first of Charlaine Harris' "Shakespeare" series and, I believe, one of her earliest mysteries. There are none of the supernatural/paranormal elements that you might expect from her better known, more recent, work.

The Shakespeare series is set in a small Southern town and features a young, single "woman with a past" as the main character. Lily Bard moved to Shakespeare after surviving a horrific rape & assault. She started working as a house cleaner and began studying martial arts. Her work as a cleaning lady gives her an interesting perspective on other residents of the town, and her study of martial arts gives her a feeling of being able to control herself and deal with the unexpected.

The narrator goes between twang and donald duck to create distracting offensive character voices. It would be better if she just used her own voice.

The story is fine, if a bit juvenile and trite (I have liked other Lisa Garner later published books), but the narrator is terrible. She reads this book like she is reading to a group of kindergarteners - her intonations and cadence are totally off base.

I made it through, but just barely

Not my favorite Lisa Gardner novel; too many subplots were concluded in the epilogue. The narration and/or editing left long and awkwardly placed pauses that made it difficult to get involved in the story.

don't buy this one

i can't comment on the story nor tell you how good or bad it is, although i enjoyed almost all of this authors books. the reason is that i could not listen to this one. and that is not for a lack of trying, trust me. every time i tried it took not more than a minute or two before i realized that i just can't keep listening to this narrator. aside from the fact that she seems to think that we are all 3 or 4 year old girls waiting to hear a bedtime story, she in fact uses pauses and stresses at certain words that make it impossible to follow the idea in the sentence.

i wish that audible would recognize this and republish the book with a different narrator. i may then be able to write a review stating what i think of the story.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I read this book awhile back. I was looking forward to listening to it. However, the pace of the narration and the tone is distracting.

I had to quit listening because the narration was so difficult.

Two dewclaws up!

A fun listen with an interesting twist on the typical detective novel. OK, it's no Arthur Conan Doyle, but there are some twists and turns that keep it interesting. But what makes the story is the narrator, Chet. I share my home with a pack of "his guys", as Chet would say, and he seems like one of my big goofy ones ("Oops, was that me barking?") I wish I knew what my dogs were thinking sometimes, and with Chet's stream-of-consciousness thought process and memories that come and go, he seems like a pretty good approximation. A good "tail" for long drives and long distance running.

Delightful

In my opinion, this book captures the essence of what we love about dogs. I don't have a dog, but I've been around many of them and I enjoy their different personalities and antics. Jim Frangione,the narrator of this recorded book, makes this enjoyable tale about a dog and his master a real delight. Spencer Quinn,the author, writes convincingly as Chet the Dog, but Frangione really brings him to life. I laughed out loud many times. Highly recommended.

Being a dog person I really really enjoyed this book! I just got it, hard to explain. Story was great too. Would love to read another one.

Great Family Book

I enjoyed this book tremendously. I am going to play it in the car for our long, long ride this vacation. I think this is the kind of book that adults and children can have fun listening to and will definitely fuel some good discussions.
