Entertaining, but not really a mystery/thriller

STORY (fiction) - This is Book 6 is the series, but it's my first Phryne Fisher book. It's set in Australia sometime in the 1920's. In this story Phryne (pronounced "Frynie"), who is a young lady of privilege, joins a traveling circus to try to learn why so many strange accidents have been occurring. IMHO, the story is really all about Phryne's experience posing as a trick rider in the circus and the characters she meets -- not a lot of mystery or detective work.

The circus characters are interesting and endearing, and I enjoyed the glimpse of circus life. Phryne is promiscuous and "romps" with a couple circus characters, which I was totally not expecting from this book or from her character. The story is a fresh, easy listen.

PERFORMANCE - Great job. She has a pleasant voice and performs multiple European accents. I totally LOVED her performance of the character Lizard Elsie.

OVERALL - Recommended primarily for adult females. There are a couple sexual encounters which are moderately explicit. Very little violence. The character Lizard Elsie is an old woman who curses like a sailor so be prepared for her frequent bursts of F this and F that, but she's a hoot! The story stands alone.

Danger and Joys in the Circus

Overcome by boredom, Phryne allows herself to be convinced by some circus friends to join a travelling circus in order to discover who is behind a string of "accidents" which threaten to shut the circus down. She gets hired as a rider in the trained horse act by learning and then demonstrating her ability to stand and stay standing on a cantering horse.

This balancing act is explained in terms that allow me to understand how it can possibly be done. That's one of the side benefits that I enjoy about reading Phryne Fisher books -- Kerry Greenwood always gives the reader some tidbit of knowledge, whether it is some bit of Australian geography or history, cultural history, or how to balance on a moving horse.

This is the first tale of Phryne working independently, with none of her ordinary backup team. Thus she is in more danger and less sure of herself. That makes this 6th Phryne Book a bit more serious than the others. And it also involves a sexual liaison which is more serious than in other books.

The Delightful Phryne

This novel is another installment in this lovely series. The focus is back on Phryne and her little family, and less on Lin and the chinese community. Many old friends from other books make happy cameos, and Phryne is at her fabulous best saving lives and sorting out messes. The theme of fathers and family is also explored in an interesting way.

Great Story

I am going through all of the Miss Fisher Mysteries in order and I really liked the story in this one. All of them have been thoroughly enjoyable books and the performance by Stephanie Daniels is exceptional.

Old Friends Enliven Flower Festival

In her 14th adventure, Phryne Fisher has been chosen Flower Queen of the 1928 St. Kilda's Annual Festival of Flowers, a sort of mixture of county fair, circus week, and mardi gras. Among the old friends who show up are a wonderful woman who does a circus act with 4 elephants who are more pets than working animals, and an ex-lover of Phryne's from one of the Orkney Islands.

In the midst of preparations for the Flower Parade, one of the Flower Maids disappears and is believed to be kidnapped, and then Phryne's adopted daughter Ruth disappears. With the help of Bert & Cec, other daughter Jane, the police and her circus friends, Phryne finds both missing girls and uncovers a whiteslave ring, of course all in the nick of time for the Flower Parade. In addition to all that action, Ruth identifies and meets her biological father.

In a very busy plot, Kerry Greenwood manages to keep her usual light approach and still to display all the spirit, elan, confidence, caring, and righteous anger the reader has come to expect from Phryne in any given situation. And Stephanie Daniel delivers all of those emotions and more with her usual skill and style. I would rate this as one of the best of the Phryne Fisher books.

Well worth a token and the time.

Engaging action, great characters/sense of place!

Bruno Courrèges is the Chief of Police (indeed, the only policeman) in the small, fictional town of St. Denis, located in the rural Périgord region of France. A lovely small town where everybody knows each other would seem the unlikeliest spot on earth for murderous crimes to occur. But they do, often bringing in more high intelligence concerns than might be imagined for such a quiet spot.

In this book, Bruno is faced with managing trouble between Chinese and Vietnamese gangs, with roots leading back to the time before the war. There is also something strange taking place in the lucrative truffle market, and Bruno has to handle both situations at once. As often happens in these books, the trouble is not just an upset between neighbors, but rather arises from a greater and older piece of French history.

The people are richly and beautifully drawn, and through them, we sense the character of people living a lifestyle that feels threatened by in the incursion of modern government oversight and regulations. But when the need arises, Bruno is very capable of shifting from small town policeman (think American Andy Griffith) to capably working hand in hand with the more sophisticated levels of police and intelligence communities. After which, he always comes home to his modest house, his cooking, loving, and community involvement.

This is just a wonderful series, and the narration is superb! I only wish there were more of them. It sure makes me wish I cook book a trip to southwest France to see the area from which these stories arise. I so very much recommend them to anyone intrigued with stories that evoke a brilliant sense of location and people!

The ending was like a soap opera and it felt as if the author rushed to finish/tie up all the loose ends...and the last few lines were really (I hate to say it) sappy.

Fun and Engaging

Another delightful mystery romp with Bruno. Delicious food and wine, creepy bad guys and subplots aplenty.

Slow start but overall good

I almost gave up on this novel. It is the first Martin Walker book I've read so I hadn't read the others in the series. It's slow to start, almost like the beginnings of a painting where the author sets the scene and atmosphere for quite a while but if you keep reading you get a full and interesting picture once things get going. Now that I've read another, the characters are engaging and keep me reading.

Great story!

Martin Walker does it again. He creates interesting characters and a well thought out plot. History, good food, and a feel for the countryside makes for a great read.

In Death Book 33.5 - Not Robb's best, but good

If you're reading the books in order, this one would be 33.5, after New York to Dallas. Susan Erickson, as always, does a wonderful job as narrator. I thoroughly enjoy the Dallas novels and have downloaded all of them. Chaos wasn't the best one ever, but it was worth the price and the time if you enjoy the series.

Short, but satisfying!

Listening to Susan Ericksen has become my preference for the JD Robb

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Although the book is a short one, the characters were well developed, and the murders were not easily solved. I appreciated the scientific quirks in this one, as well as the accurate treatment of the struggles of addiction.

What does Susan Ericksen bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?

Susan Ericksen's readings are like icing on cake...makes it so much better!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I did not want to listen to it all at once...in fact I purposefully kept restarting the book so it would last longer!

Some of the shorter books in this series seemed rushed...not so for this story. Very satisfying! Enjoy!

Chaos in Death

This is a novella that seems as if was written for Halloween. Susan Ericksen does a great job narrating the story. The story takes place after Eve Dallas's return from Dallas Tx which was the last book in the series. The story is short but enough action to keep one listening. Makes a nice change of pace between reading much longer books.

A New Favorite

I had not heard about Ace Atkins or Jeff Woodman before I saw this listing on Audible. I thought I may as well give it a try so I downloaded it. Once I started "The Ranger", I had trouble turning it off and walking away. Ace Atkins crafts a story that hold you and makes you want to hear more while Jeff Woodman does an outstanting job with the narration. I can hardly wait for the next one to come out. I can believe I found a New Favorite!

I like this guy!

I really like this guy! If Quinn Colson were sheriff in my town, I'd vote for him just for being so honestly cool. The drama in this story just keeps going, and I can't wait to read the next book. ....ahhhh, swooon

Jeff Woodman's reading was easy to listen to. He does a nice job on different voices for the characters so they are recognizable.

Good start on a new series.

Really like the characters in this series. I like the narrator better in this book than some of his others, he kind of reads a little slow sometimes.

Stands out

I started listening to "On What Grounds" with very low expectations. I was interested in exploring fiction in the mystery sub-genre where activities such as crafts or cooking propel the plot. I've read books where knitting is the focus, and jewelry making, and baking, and now this. Sadly, I have found the writing in some of the others to be lacking. In this one, however, the cafe was central to the plot and the descriptions and dialog were rich and authentic. It stands out from the others in this genre, and I plan to read more of the series.

Protagonist a bit naive, loves describing coffee!

What did you like best about On What Grounds? What did you like least?

It was easy to listen to; it reminded me of a Lifetime movie. The writing was good, but at times the protagonist asks a lot of questions that don't need to be asked, and is a little verbose. The actions and words of the main character are a little unrealistic, a little too innocent, a little too nice. For example, if someone is going to try to ruin your life, you wouldn't exclaim "You bastard!" - that's probably the most foul language used in the book.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The descriptions of coffee preparation are nice, but they make it sound like a book written in a coffee house by a coffee house worker looking to move on from working in a coffee house. The least interesting aspect was the list of characters who seem stock.

Which scene was your favorite?

I didn't really have any favorite scenes; the book doesn't seem to have too many highs or lows - it's just a nice smooth story, like a nice cup of coffee.

Did On What Grounds inspire you to do anything?

Nope.

If you're looking for something relaxing to occupy your time, this is a good book; it won't take you to many places that will startle you or make you uncomfortable.

You're going to love this series!

I have listened to almost all of the books available in this series available on Audible. And, let me say, you're really going to love it! First of all, it has the perfect cast of characters: the sweet mother-in-law, the annoying ex-husband, the super loved adult daughter, a hot detective, and a hilarious group of baristas. This mystery contains just the right amount of drama and humor. It's one of those books you can't put down.

Another great listen!

I really loved listening to this book along with the other three books in the Detective MIchael Bennett series. The story and readers were excellent in all of them. This is one of my favorite series of books. This series is good to listen to in order because of the character and family situation development. Also because all the books are so good that you don't want to miss out.

Fast-paced and Satisfying

I tended to stay away from James Patterson's co-authored books until I happened to stumble over the first in his Michael Bennett series. I was instantly hooked. Bennett and his family are immensely engaging. I was delighted to see another in the series, and it didn't disappoint. I read the first two and opted to listen to the next two. These audio versions are extremely well done. Bobby Cannavale's narration captures Michael Bennett perfectly in a voice as likable as the written character. Highly recommended.

My first Mike Bennett book, found a new favorite!

This is the first Mike Bennett book I've listened to, and I'll definitely be checking out the others. I would give the story 3 1/2 stars - I liked the characters and the progression of the story, but the "aha moment" at the end was a letdown for me. I gave it an extra 1 1/2 stars because I loved Bobby Canavale. He really made the character of Bennett come alive for me.

Love the Bennett Family!

Good quick listen which hold your interest. Good story line and action. I can hardly wait for the next installment to find out what happens between..... Oops, can't tell because it would spoil the story for those who are looking to enjoy it. All I can say that you will not be disappointed in the action and plot.

Don't bother

If I ever needed another reason to stay away from Patterson's co-authored books, this novel would be it. Tick Tock has more product placement (eg. Tyvek pants; Pixar film) than I noticed in the others; the characterizations are shallow; the plot thin.

Just Fun

Love these pretty simple stories told from Chet's (the dog's) point of view. Light reading, a little angst, happy ending . . . all's well with the world - more or less.

Here We Go Again

Bernie is short on cash again so he's doing the work he likes the least; divorce. He gets the goods on a man's wife; and on his ex-wife's current boyfriend. The client throws in circus tickets with the check and suddenly Chet and Bernie have found their next case as the elephant and her trainer have gone missing. Though the ensuing chase is much like those in the first two books they're still entertaining. Once again Bernie is hit on the head and is arrested on a bogus charge; once again Chet is captured as well, But once again he escapes and the case takes a huge step forward. I hope at some point there are at least a few changes made in the plots of the books in the series. I like this series but as good as these books are; the plot needs to change sooner or later. Still a great listening experience.

Yes, it's a very easy listen and keeps you entertained. The characters are well rounded and interesting. The dog narration is well done but not a "gimmick". You soon forget he has four legs and a tail.

I can't remember any other books by this narrator, but he surely captures the feel of Chet in this series.

This series is good for cute, light reading. I find myself grinning at Chet's narration and Quinn strikes the right balance of keeping Chet smart and yet still fundamentally a dog who can't quite help himself from being won over by treats and praise or overcome by tangential thoughts of why anyone would *save* bacon or chasing wild geese when humans start talking in metaphors.

Excellent Read For Those Who Have Dogs

Would you consider the audio edition of To Fetch a Thief to be better than the print version?

Only people who own dogs could appreciate what goes through Chet's ever changing mind. We really do want to know what goes in their little pea brains sometimes and even if the story isn't as strong as people would like it is really enjoyable. This is a book that makes you laugh out loud at times and the story line is pretty good, but that's not the point. Books should be enjoyed on your interest in the book and not on others. I have read/listen to many books that got terrible reviews and completely enjoyed them while others that got rave reviews were completely, utterly awful! So to each their own.

Scary, exciting, great detail

"Don't Blink" mixes the right amounts of confusion, human nature, and the games people play. A little too gross for me at times, but Patterson & Roughan keep the story moving. The non-stop disasters get to be exhausting, but overall, a great listen.

Drove for 13 hr.From Lousanna to North Alabama and back.Turned it off only once when I got home.Great book .

among one of the better Patterson collaborations

I would place this story among the better "Patterson/little known writer" collaborations. Just the right combination of narration, story plot, suspense, romance, politics, humanism, violence and victories. I did not think that this story was boring at all. Some of the female characters could have been better developed...unfortunately they were more or less accessories to move the men along in the story. Overall very good story. You will like it if you are Patterson fan and follower. Looking forward to reading more Nick Daniels stories.

As is typical this James Patterson book was great and hard to stop listening to all at one time. Look forward to more of his books on audible.

What is going on whit James Patterson ,you need to write less book and better writing .It feel that you did not write the book .I think that Howard Roughan wrote this book and had your name to sell it!! That is why you are not on the top 10 whit audible and not even on the top 50 on amazon.

Another Great Cork O'Connor Mystery!!

Great mystery and full of suspense. The historic information and the suspense keep you wanting for more. The characters are great. Have recommended Cork O'Connor books to nearly anyone who will listen. This is another of the great stories William Kent Krueger brings to life in the character of Cork O'Connor!

more than enough

I've read every book in this series, and have now officially grown exhausted. The shape of the story is much like a Ross McDonald novel, with the sins of the past, long buried, surfacing to plague the present. But the story-in-a-story became a self-indulgent family history with a pop psychology float. The repression of memory is unbelievable and takes far to long to work through.

Henry who?

You can't change the way a character's name is pronounced 10 books into a series, Very distracting to hear Henry's name pronounced "wrong" each time

Another well done story

Story kept me guessing most of the way through. Some of the characters are now old friends because I have listened to several of this series
