Agatha is back and causing more trouble!

Agatha Raisin, amateur sleuth extraordinaire, has decided to start up her own detective agency. At first things are slow going with lost cats. However soon she hires her new neighbour, Emma Comfrey, as her secretary and her friend, Sir Charles, refers a case to her. A Mrs Laggart-Brown wants her to investigate the death threats her daughter has received. As Agatha and her detectives investigate they discover a tangle of relationships and murder, as they try to get to the bottom of it.

Im smitten with Agatha Raisin. Shes sassy, funny and I love that she is now a detective officially! Cozy mystery series with their amateur detectives poking their nose into things can sometimes get very long-winded, so its refreshing to see a series that has gone from amateur to official detective and thus gives Agatha a reason to poke her nose into things!!

I enjoyed the mystery a lot, but perhaps what I enjoyed more was Sir Charles Fraith being around, and James Lacey not. James Lacey is Agathas ex-husband, who went off to be a monk and then disappeared. Hes barely even mentioned in Agatha Raisin and the Deadly Dance and as Im firmly on Team Charles I was completely fine with this! I have a feeling that M.C. Beaton will be making him pop up sooner or later though.

Penelope Keith is the voice of Agatha Raisin for me. I really enjoyed Penelopes acting career, being such a big fan of british tv, and Im glad shes voicing these audiobooks. I love the voices she provides, especially the caring tones she puts in her voice for Mrs Bloxby, who is perhaps Agathas greatest friend. I hope Penelope Keith continues to provide the voice for these audiobooks for many years to come, because both Penelope and Agatha herself are the reason I keep coming back to listen to more.

Penelope Keith is a great narrator

Every one of these books in the series are fantastic and brought alive by Penelope Keith. She makes the story so funny and so exciting. I love this series. MC Beaton writes The kind of stories I like to read.

Best yet

This is the best in the series. Agatha comes into her own as a professional detective. Charles and Mrs. Bloxby are there along with a few other characters that add to the delight of this book.

James or Charles?

Another great mystery with new characters and all of the favorites - Mrs. B is one of my favorites. And Penelope Keith out does herself with accents and dialects. She is an absolute marvel! Don't miss this one!

Solid Agatha mystery

Not the best of this series but I enjoy them all. I love, love, love Penelope Keith.

Narrator not my favorite

I am really annoyed by this narrator's over-zealous approach to this series. There is no difference between the highs and the lows in her narration. There is only super agitated.

The story is good, but I will not continue listening- unfortunately.

Great story

James invites Agatha on vacation then abandons her. Agatha being Agatha pulls herself together solves the crime and realizes that James isn't the fantasy that has been in her dreams. This is a great book.

Entertaining

This is a light and entertaining book. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will read the next one.

The perfect paragon

This book was one of the best of her series. I love that Agatha still has her dreams of finding the love of her life , even though she has to kiss a lot of frogs.

Consistent Entertainment

People come and people go, but Agatha remains consistent and the stories have sufficient variation to hold your attention. Ms Bloxby has now on a couple occasions provided Agatha some inspiration based on the Vicar's wife's intuition about people. This was originally a bit bumbling and embarrassing, much like Agatha was. But in the past couple installments, this intuition had become more focused and more useful to Agatha. The male interests have changed again, but that is too be expected and helps to keep the story lines fresh. The performance is good.

Always enjoy Penelope Keith's reading. Storyline was well done and it flowed well. Agatha seems to be getting mature.

Agatha Raisin is British Cozy at it's best!

I am actually reviewing the Agatha Raisin series. It seems a bit silly to review each one individually. If you love The Walkers of Dembley you will probably love The Haunted House and the Curious Curate and so forth. If you hate the first one you read, you will probably hate the rest. Kind of like Doctor Who. Either you "get it" or you don't.

Now I realize that Agatha Raisin books are nobody's idea of high literature but for what they are, they are the best. I have read a lot of British cozies and I always return to Agatha. We are "of an age" Agatha and I, which is part of the appeal as I really love finding books about people really LIVING and enjoying life after 45 or 50 years old. The world of love and adventure are not exclusively for the young. And Agatha is so wonderfully and chronically imperfect. If the stars of the British cozy world have one major drawback it is that they are all ultimately so very, very good. Not our Agatha, by golly. She is vain and self-centered and insecure. You know, those pesky human conditions. Sometimes you just want to shake her but you should probably go look in the mirror first.

The setting of the Agatha books is another reason I come back again and again. The little villages in the Cotswolds are such a perfect place to set a cozy. Surely one little village wouldn't really experience quite so many dead bodies but this is serial mystery, not classic literature. If I could retire to one of those little villages and live in Agatha's cottage, I would do it in a heartbeat even if I had to cook for her cats, eat tv dinners and put up with James Lacy as a neighbor. Well, I might not eat the tv dinners, but still.

Penelope Keith does a really wonderful job of bringing the offbeat and often hilarious cast of characters to life. Generally, a woman narrator speaking for a man makes me want to stab my ears but Penelope actually pulls it off. I gave this narrator 5 stars even though I was afraid she was doomed from the start. You see I read a LOT of Agatha Raisin books in print before listening to any and I had Agatha's voice firmly in my head already as Judi Dench. But it didn't take long at all for Ms Keith to pull me in.

Another pleasant visit with Agatha

The latest addition in this series is funny, light and very enjoyable. The plot was well developed and the characters intersting and amusing. This is truly a good book.

Another great story of Agatha and her adventures

Always a great story and a few good laughs following Agatha as she attempts to solve a mystery before the police do.

Consistent Development

The stories remain engaging and fresh partly due to the entrance and exit, and re-entrance of various new and old characters. While Bill Wong, the Vicar's wife, and Roy remain consistent interlocutors, they are somewhat more in the background than Agatha's co-sleuths, who carry more of the weight of each story. James Lacey, Charles Fraith, and now John Armitage provide the up front foils for Agatha's detecting and their here, gone, and again here give the stories consistency and grounding. Their serial introductions keep the story line from becoming too staid. These are fun stories and provide good entertainment without the heaviness of more serious stories. Even so, these are not comedies and while there is some humor, it plays a distant role and occurs naturally as part of the story at infrequent, even sparse instances.

Was very disappointed with this book. I have read many others in the series but this was just dreadful. Mrs Beaton seemed to have lost her way with wandering plot lines and indestinguishable characters. I kept having to rewind and listen again to keep up. I wonder if she has just run out of ideas . What a shame because I liked her other books .

Good Book, Disappointing Narrator

Agatha Raisin is back in the village of Carsely, after spending a holiday abroad. She's determined to snag the heart of neighbor, James Lacey. However when James doesn't return her advances, Agatha catches the eye of the new vet, Paul Bladen. However before a romance can truly begin, Paul Bladen, turns up dead. Despite it being ruled as an accident, Agatha is certain that it is murder, and drags James Lacey along to help investigate. Agatha hopes to not only make James fall in love with her, but solve the murder too!

Oh Agatha, how I love thee! You are spunky, speak your mind and are behaving like a boy-crazy middled aged woman! It's impossible not to like Agatha with her zest for life. This time she has romance on the mind as she chases vet, Paul Bladen, and retired Colonel, James Lacey. Of course when it doesn't go her way she stamps her feet and becomes more determined.

This series has such a great colorful cast of characters, and it was great to see many of them returning in the second book. I would have liked to have seen more of the Carsely Ladies Society, but I'm sure they will be popping up in the next book too.

This audiobook flew by in a torrent of enjoyable goings on in the village, as Agatha and James try to solve the murder. Before I knew it the murder was solved and the audio was finished, leaving me wanting to grab the next one.

The first book in this series was narrated by Penelope Keith, and this second one was narrated by Diana Bishop. I really wished they hadn't changed narrators. Where Penelope was great and expressed all the color of the characters of Carsely, Diana fell flat for me. At times I had a hard time distinguishing the voices and it was really the story that pulled me through to the end of the book, with no help from the narrator. If you are a cozy mystery fan, this is a such a great series and I intend to continue on. The next in the series is narrated by Penelope Keith, and I can't wait!

A Delightful Short Romp!

I veered away from my usual serious mystery fare to listen to the free-to-prime members book -- "Agatha Raisin and the Quiche of Death." It was just a light, enjoyable easy listen -- with the central character quite the character! So that convinced to me buy and download book #2 -- AR and the Vicious Vet -- and it was just as much fun.

Agatha Raisin is a 50-something retired PR exec who retired to the Cotswalds and has a hard time settling in to the relaxed pace. But give her a mystery, especially a murder, to solve and she goes after it whole heartedly. The book has some truly laugh-out-loud moments when Agatha's best of intentions go awry. The narration in these books is superb and my only complaint is that they are mostly around six hours in length. Under $10, but still, a bit pricey for the time you get in return I think.

A tedious disappointment - Don't Bother!

Where is the confident, take no prisoners Scarpetta gone? Over the last 20 books she has steadily deteriorated. Readers want humanistic heroes, but Cornwell allows her character to slide more and more into the abyss of self-doubt. This novel does not hang together and does not move any of the people forward you care about (except Lucy for once and only just barely).

The first half of the book goes into way to much autopsy detail and drags on and on and on and on and on. The court case backdrop was not believable; nor, did any real resolution happen in it or to the confrontations that were provoked by it. The story is just flat-out weak. The general theme of Marino screwing up has been done to death (pardon the pun). It would also be nice to see a little more communication between Scarpetta, Lucy and Benton the non-communication theme has also been played out. Conrwell glosses over this breakdown with flimsy one line justifications. One the positive side, at least Lucy might start to finally catch a break.

If Cornwell wants to keep this series going, she needs to find more inspiration. A great case, a thrill of the chase, lets get the characters outwardly focused instead of inspecting their own navels. Let Scarpetta and her characters kick some butt instead of having their butts kicked. Cmon Conrwell, Scarpetta deserves better than this!

Not a happy soul to be found - - - -

Although I have read or listened to almost every Scarpetta novel, there has been disappointment in her last few. I keep hoping the writing will return to the kind of relationships and story lines in the early years--but no.

I had high expectations for this one based on the summary from the publisher- it sounded really good. It held my interest up through the first half of part one, but after that, the continual obnoxious behavior the characters all have for one another began to grate. No one, and I mean NO ONE, is a likeable person. Even Kay and Benton seem to have contempt for each other. There is just no connection between any of the the characters that makes me say "yes--I'd like to see what happens down the road" with these people.

Now I must comment on the narration, which is mentioned by several other people.

Not As Good As The Others I Read

I found Book 10: "Mrs. Pollifax and the Second Thief" even too far fetched for a Mrs. Pollifax mystery to be truly entertaining.

Mrs. Emily Pollifax is sent to Italy in response to former CIA Farrell's SOS. There she finds John Sebastian Farrell wounded and needing to be kept out of sight. Her assigned Italian companion turns out to be a young woman of many talents as Emily soon learns while outrunning and out-maneuvering the string of cars following them.

There's a plethora of characters. Sometimes it's hard to keep their different roles in mind while mentally picturing what is happening and why. She and Farrell run into a former nemesis, a hired assassin Mrs. Pollifax had met in Africa on safari. Emily and Farrell were responsible for his imprisonment in France; where he should still be. "So, how could he be in Italy?"

Barbara Rosenblat gave a sterling performance, as usual. In my opinion she carried the story.

I love Mrs. Pollifax, but for those contemplating one of her stories, I would forgo this one.

Great series

Would you consider the audio edition of Mrs. Pollifax and the Second Thief to be better than the print version?

Absolutely loved this whole series. Narration was great except for the last book in the series. Loved the locations and the detailed description about the people, customs, and traditions. Mrs. Pollifax character was a delight and loved her. Listened to the series twice through I enjoyed it so much. The narrator was so good, I can't imagine that reading the books would have been nearly as enjoyable.

Mrs. P in Sicily

An old friend needs help desperately - so Mrs. P heads to Sicily. Then finds that there are quite a few people following her, and interested in her doings. An old adversary shows up, and then things really get interesting! Once again, laugh-out-loud moments are interspersed with touching moments, and nothing is ever just the way it seems. Mrs. Pollifax even gets to ride a bicycle! Excellent narration makes this adventure even better.

A must read in the series!

Enjoyable till the very last word! Very well woven mystery! Well loved characters return making the story even more compelling.

Addicted

Listen to one and the 13 follow, even if you have a pile of newer listens awaiting. Pollifax and the folks she meets up with during forays into the world of espionage just can't be put aside. Barbara Rosenblat IS Emily. Take a chance on this series and you too will find yourself hooked, for the better.
