Mystery or romance novel?

Melinda Leigh, like Sandra Brown, is one of those authors who ALWAYS put two or three long and explicit sex scenes in her novels. Leigh, like Sandra Brown, also writes really good mystery novels. She Can Hide is a very good mystery novel. It is also extremely well narrated.

I'll listen to others by this author

Good entertainment. Was not crazy about the narrator at first, but it got better as the story went along. I will definitely try more from this author.

Decent story

Good story- easy to listen to. Nothing earth shattering as far as plot goes. But it was entertaining and I love to listen to a book while I'm driving!

Getting Predictable

The narrator was pretty good but the plotline is getting predictable... a love story imtertwined with danger, a hot hero and a dog. Hopefully the next book changes it up.

Wasn't expecting the news about Abby's mother or her estranged father's wife involvement in anything. Very interesting story. Good read!

A cat and his librarian

Charlie Harris is a part time collage librarian in Mississippi. He's a recent widower with a pet Maine Coon Cat named, Diesel, who walks on a leash everywhere with Charlie. Charlie also boards a couple of students from the college.

When a former classmate, Godfrey Priest, comes to town to promote his latest bestselling book, not everyone is pleased with his visit. Godfrey is a bit of an arrogant bastard who has hurt and angered a number of people. He's also coming to claim a son who is rooming with Charlie. But someone has killed Godfrey in his hotel before he can give his talk. Now Charlie finds himself researching more than old college documents so he can help find the killer before his friends become the prime suspects.

This story revolves a great deal around the cat, who seems a bit like a recovery service cat. Diesel seemed to always know when someone needed extra attention and love. This aspect of the story was very subtle and well done, which I really liked. On the other hand, I found it a bit difficult to believer that everyone, and all places, appreciated having a cat around, especially food places. That being said, this story was captivating and intriguing. The well developed characters and theme of book writing made this a fun mystery.

The narration was well done, but since the story was written in a first person male voice, I might have preferred a male narration. Though I liked this audio version well enough that I definitely plan to listen to the next book in this fun series too.

Delightful

This is a new author and narrator for me. This is the first book in the new series Cat in the Stacks. The story takes place in Athena, Mississippi. Our protagonist is Charlie Harris, a middle aged librarian, who works at the local university library. Charlie has a Maine Coon cat named Diesel and he walks on a leash.

In the story a famous author wants to bequeath his papers to the university library. The author, Godfrey Priest, was a fellow classmate of Charlies although high school and college; they both grew up in Athena. Priest is murdered and Charlie and Diesel set off to find the villain.

James has created a well-crafted mystery story. The hero is likable but I particularly enjoyed Diesel. The author provided a history of the Maine Coon cat. I always enjoy learning odd bits of information while reading a story. The narration is in the first person and the plot twists and turns.

Over all this is a delightful read. I understand that Miranda James is a pseudonym for author Dean James who also writes under a variety of other names. This is a new author for me and a new series.

was just as funny as the first.however the story line ran up and down through a lot of places.a little hard to follow sometimes but I love all the characters.

Terrific Story; Sub-Par Narration

What did you like best about Double Dip? What did you like least?

Archer's characters are quirky and three-dimensional. There's a good mix of sane and crazy. I know very little about the casino world, but Archer's descriptions are so vivid that I never feel lost. She weaves story and setting extremely well.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Just as one story line seems to tie up, another unravels and usually in a most humorous way.

Would you be willing to try another one of Amber Bensons performances?

No, thanks.

Could you see Double Dip being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

I'm not up on current popular stars, so I'm not a great person to ask how to cast this for movie, TV, or internet.

Amber Benson is a fine reader and handles Southern English well as one character. Her trouble comes in trying to deal with another accent besides Davis Way. The grandmother sounded as though she lived part of her life in Minnesota and part in New Jersey. As for No-Hair and Sanders, Benson probably should stop trying to sound like a man to save her vocal chords. The other women, including Fantasy, sounded as though Benson was pretending to be a fairy. And the TV news reporter sounded like a kindergartener pretending to be a fairy.Ms. Benson is a soprano who is attempting to sing alto, tenor, and baritone. One needs a plus-sized vocal range for narration of books with lots of characters. Sometimes the range comes with age. Save your fine voice, Ms. Benson, and stick with projects that have a smaller range required.But Archer's writing is spot-on. I look forward to Davis Way's next caper.

Good stuff

Barry Eisler does a good job narrating his own books, I prefer his versions over the others. Rain is a fun hero character, and the stories are always exciting. It's easy to get tired of a series if you keep listening to the same one book after book, so I take breaks and go elsewhere, then return. This series is as entertaining as Mike Connelly, Vince Flynn or Brad Thor material, great authors but I can also tire of them. It's like anything else I guess. This idea targets a review that said Eisler's series was same old, same old. They all are after a while. Anyway, glad I found John Rain! If you like thrillers, give this a whirl, you won't be disappointed!

What a difference great narration makes!

Winner Take All was originally published as Rain Storm with Brian Nishi narrating. I listened to Rain Storm three years ago and rated it 4 stars, but did nor write a review. With Barry Eisler, the author, doing the narration (and also retitling the novel) it is a much better listening experience. Winner Take All is a solid 5 star John Rain novel with Eisler doing the narration. Eisler now narrates all of his own books.

These books are getting better and better.. to the extent that I have now started the next in the series.. I love the new chapters he introduces..

John Rain, Who Else?

I chose a 5-Star rating because this book truly deserves it. I would recommend it to fans of the John Rain series. I liked that this book successfully built upon what had happened to John Rain (previously) and showed character development laced with intrigue and plots within plots within subplots. The introduction of two new wonderful characters (a woman and a man) was a complete joy, as they helped to really elevate the story even more. Heck, you could write a book just on the woman alone. The different locations that are featured in the book were just great. I definitely enjoyed when folks cornered John Rain and he gave taste after taste of his fury. Sinfully good! I highly recommend this book.

Good Story :)

Dee Henderson writes great stories. I have read several of these books and enjoyed them all.

They all seem to share a common theme - a highly traumatized woman meets a nice christian guy and by the grace of God he is able to help her heal.

I only have one semi-sarcastic complaint and that is everyone in these books says conversation constantly. Nobody ever has a meeting, discussion, argument, or talk - it's always a conversation. I don't think I have ever heard anyone in real life use the word conversation like that - kind of sounds like they have all been seeing the same therapist ;)

But in all seriousness - these are excellent stories! Well written and well narrated!

Good story line - too long with too many details

Bryce Bishop is a coin dealer who is bored - at least that's what he tells God in a brief prayer before his life changes drastically. Charlotte Graham is the inheritor of her Grandfather's vast, vast, estate and wealth. She has ALOT of coins to sell. But she is also the subject of the most infamous kidnapping in Chicago history. She was missing for four years before she was found and she has not spoken to anyone about what happened during those four years. She changed her identity and with the help of her friend and bodyguard she had rebuilt her life and found a profession she loved that allowed her to remain anonymous. Now she finds herself burdened with managing her grandfathers estate. After some detailed research she secretly approaches Bryce with the option of being the outlet she needs to sell her coins. The price of the coins is so good he can't pass up the opportunity. And so begins a relationship like none he has ever had.

I have been a fan of Dee Henderson's for years but this is not one of my favorites. I did like the relationship between Bryce and Charlotte and how patient and tender he was with her.

A decent book.

This story is typical of Bradshaw's books. I will keep listening to them even though the narrator is extremely difficult to listen to. A bit too dramatic.

Not what I expected from the publisher's blurb

Guess I'm more into near reality than I thought. Just too much implausible for me. The PI has had a fairly rotten life, goes on a class reunion cruise with her SO who deems to be fairly high up in the mob, and becomes embroiled in a series of murders. The innocent think she hung the moon, the villains want to hurt her. It just seemed to need more development, there were too many loose ends.

I did not care for the narrator's rather tinny voice quality, character interpretations, or pace.

Still, it was worth the $3.00 it cost for Whispersync as offered by Book Bub

Excellent Story

Well written and told well. Lots of surprises. Will have to read more in this series.

Struggled to finish but it was ok

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

It was a good way to fill up time for a long drive, but it didn't give the feeling of "I have to read more!"

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Jean Alexander?

Yes, she was a bit dry and uneventful

Excellent book, horrible narration

The story had a great plot twist and I enjoyed it from beginning to end. However, the narrator was horrible, probably the worst I've ever listened to. She sounded like a first grader learning to read. It was difficult to figure out where one character's dialogue ended and the next began. I'm looking forward to the next book and hoping she's not the narrator.

good book

I loved the book and gave it 5 stars because it had everything I like; suspense, drama, romance and solving the who done it. I had to listen to the beginning twice because I didn't realize there was a prologue. The characters were well developed and the suspense was palpable. The relationship between the main characters was believable and well thought out. The narrator was great at character voice recognition and I look forward to listening to other books narrated by her. I am new to audible and becoming a fan. I would like to read and listen to more books by this author.

Interesting

Great plot twist! I really enjoyed the happy ending as well as the good feeling you get when a bad guy is caught.

An Easy Romantic Thriller

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

It was not a waste of time, and was a good way to stay entertained while driving and doing other tasks.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Serial killers from the past. And a hint that one may be returning in future novels.

I don't think I've heart this narrator before, but she was very good.

First Thought when Finished: An Uninvited Ghost by E.J. Copperman was a fun entry into the series. The characters are just fantastic!

Story Thoughts: Oh My! What do you do when you turn your house into a B&B and then someone ends up dead? Well if you are Alison you try not to investigate but with pesky ghosts bugging you too, you end up doing it anyway! The mystery was fun in An Uninvited Ghost. You could mostly tell who was responsible about half way though but watching the story play out was still entertaining. One of the things I love about this series is the police are involved. Alison does work with them and even tries to stay out of the way. Things never quite go that well for her but at least she tries. I think most cozy mystery lovers will like the mystery and how it plays out!

Character Thoughts: Let's talk ghosts! I don't think there is a better duo of ghosts than Paul and Maxie. They both bring such life to the series. Neither has been dead very long so you get some "growing" pains and adjustments that just make you laugh (and sometimes tear up). Ali is a kick butt leading lady. She is a single mother to a very smart kid and has a mother that is supportive (and yet a little off). Of course, all 3 can see ghosts so that plays into their personalities as well. The "Off The Shore" cast that was in this book was hilarious and the "Old Folks Vacationers" were delight too. EJ Cooperman just writes good characters!

I almost sound like a broken record where Amanda's narration is concerned but I have never heard her do a bad job--EVER! Seriously she just does quirky better than anyone. She has great pacing and just the right amount of "snark" in her voice. I adore her narration.

Final Thoughts: I am off to get the 3rd book in the series :)

great start to series

this is a light whodunit with a dash of the paranormal and heroine who isn't--her coming to grips with sharing a home with ghosts as a single mother is an enjoyable listen.

Possibly the BEST Agatha Raisin yet!

The story has many curious twists and turns. Will Agatha even survive this case? Will Roy and James survive? Are there really practicing witches in the countryside? Will Wilkes finally tear his hair out over Agatha's continuing involvement in his cases? Will Carsely finally reject Agatha or fete her because of all the murder and mayhem that always surround her?

In this book, many of the characters finally "grow up". As usual, Penelope Keith's narration is top notch. I spent the entire day enjoying this wonderful audiobook from beginning to end!

Favorite Story (so far)

The story was very good, complicated enough in the main story to keep me interested. With little stories woven through the overall story as it progresses. I appreciated that the police warnings weren't overdone this time (stay out of our investigation or you'll be charged, etc.), it gets old when there are too many. The story did not become bogged down with excessive emotional drama, just enough to make me curious about what each character will do next. I look forward to the crazy friendship/sporadic lover relationship of Charles and Agatha. I think if both of them could grow up just a touch more, they'd make a delightful and surprising husband and wife team. Especially because they're both unpredictable in their own unique way. But for some reason Agatha is unchanging in this area, which is somewhat confusing since she has grown in other relationships. There were a few unexpected characters and surprising events that I really liked. And that is why this is my favorite Agatha Raisin story so far (I've read half the books in this series).

Is Agatha Raisin Capable of Lasting Love?

Agatha Raisin is one of my favorite series. I miss the development of Agatha with a few happy male relationships.

I love these books and this was one of my favorites. I really hope MC Beaton continues to keep Agatha and company around and into trouble for awhile longer.
