Publisher's Summary:
In this irresistible new mystery from New York Times best seller M. C. Beaton, the adorably cranky Agatha Raisin investigates when a local baker is murdered while performing in a seemingly harmless pantomime.
"Fee, fie, fo, fum. I smell the blood of an Englishman"
Even though Agatha Raisin loathes amateur dramatics, her friend Mrs. Bloxby, the vicar's wife, has persuaded her to support the local pantomime. Stifling a yawn at the production of Babes in the Woods, Agatha watches as the baker, playing an ogre, struts and threatens on the stage. Then a trapdoor opensfollowed by a scream and then silence.
Surely, this isn't the way the scene was rehearsed? When it turns out the popular baker has been murdered, Agatha puts her team of private detectives on the case. They soon discover more feuds and temperamental behavior in amateur theatrics than in a professional stage show - and face more and more danger as the team gets too close to the killer.
The Blood of an Englishman is Agatha's 25th adventure, and you'd think she would have learned by now not to keep making the same mistakes. Alas, no - yet Agatha's flaws only make her more endearing. In this sparkling new entry in Beaton's New York Times best-selling series of modern cozies, Agatha Raisin once again "manages to infuriate, amuse, and solicit our deepest sympathies as we watch her blunder her way boldly through another murder mystery". Members Reviews:
Great story, awful narration
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Why on earth did MC Beaton switch from the fabulous Penelope Keith to this third rate narrator? Why? Did Ms. Keith die or something?
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Blood of an Englishman?
The plot was great as usual.
How could the performance have been better?
So many bad aspects of it I don't know where to start. The characters' voices were flat as a board. Penelope Keith usually narrates this series & has a gift for vividly bringing the characters to life.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Like I said, great story, awful narration.
Voice actor
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Penelope Keith as voice talent
Who was your favorite character and why?
I found it too painful to listen to the entire story - am reading it instead
Would you be willing to try another one of Alison Larkins performances?
Never. She has a terrible lisp (so do I so I don't feel bad mentioning it but I would not think voice artist would be an appropriate career choice for me) and no real differentiation between characters. Doesn't do men well. Nor does her agatha raisin have any depth.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
MC Beaton always interesting. So far reading the story has been quite enjoyable
HORRIBLE HORRIBLE NARRATION
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Keeping the original narrator from the last 20 or so books. Where's Donada Peters? Or when she can't do it, Penelope Keith? This woman makes it apparent that she has NEVER listened to the previous books' narrations and so her work here does not complement their work. She makes Mrs.
