A totally delightful and mystery filled read!

This is the first book from Ellery Adams that I've had the chance to read or in this case listen to. I knew it was going to be a murder mystery but I had no clue how wonderful and delightful the characters would be. I can so see Great aunt Octavia and her formidable size and personality. I look forward to future books being done in audio in the series. The reader was so entertaining and brought the characters to life. I can see story bro call in my mind and it seems like a place of such joy and beauty and I cannot wait to read more.

Nancy Drew meets "The Librarian"

This book was surprisingly delightful! Jane is very Nancy Drew and much of the story reminds me of "The Librarians" TV movies & now show. The references to great works of literature from such a wide variety of genres is just plain fun! Although in some places a bit hokey, the book really is quirky and fun from beginning to end. I look forward to more.

Enjoyable First in a New Series!

In her newest series Ellery Adams is transporting readers to a holiday estate, where visitors get to spend their days reading books in various themed rooms, or walking on the beautiful grounds. When resort manager, Jane Stewart, hosts a themed week "Murder and Mayhem Week" she doesn't realize Storyton Hall will be the scene for an actual murder, as someone is intent on recovering a book at all costs!

Amongst all the genres I love mysteries the most. There is such a great variety for readers, from the classics of Agatha Christie to the modern cozy mystery. Murder in the Mystery Suite is a celebration of the mystery genre. From the reading rooms named after authors, to the murder, which centers around a lost manuscript from a great mystery author. Every page delighted in me, as I felt fully immersed in the mystery, and enjoyed the delightful name dropping of all the authors mentioned.

I loved all the characters at Storyton Hall, and those in the town as well. There is more than meets the eye to Jane Stewart, and her delightful twins, as well as her Aunt and Uncle. They kept me on my toes and I wasn't able to guess who the murderer was, or other surprises along the way.

Alike to her other mysteries, Ellery Adams has subtly weaved magic within the pages, and left readers absolutely mesmerized with this new series.

Jeff Harding is terrible

I love audible and I love Charlie Parker books but honestly if there all narrated by Jeff Harding I won't be purchasing them. His voice is just dry no emotion and his voice just doesn't fit the story.

realistically creepy

I am so glad I didn't read this book. I am also glad that Jeff Hardy is narrating the book. I don't know how much what is in this book is because of research or because John Connolly has a demented imagination. I do know that this book went deeper than the previous book. By the way, one of the books is missing from audible.com. This is a disturbingly good book.

cool

my friend gave me this book as a hardback years ago. it came with a music cd. that's why I jumped into it. I never had a book that had come with its own soundtrack before. it was my first Connolly book and I have read every one since then.

now that I've read them all, I will say this one is not my fave but I rarely read books more than once and this is one that I have read 3 times. I think if u like stories with a supernatural element without being all cute like twilight and if u don't mind a couple of detours away from the storyline (it will all circle back around) then this is a fun romp through New England and Europe without the breakneck pace or self importance of the da Vinci code.

it is important to note that while this is not book 1 of the Charlie Parker series and it is helpful to read them in order, it is not absolutely necessary especially in the first five books.

I try to write myself (blogs not books) but as an aspiring writer I can really respect the duality and dimension of the protagonist. he is not a good guy with a vice it aggravating nature. he is more than that. unfortunately, his mate is drawn a bit flat but his complexity is refreshing.

I've been an audible customer forever. there were times I winced when the narrator spoke and times I thought it was ok. I seem to feel differently about performances of books that I have read myself that's why I gave him 4 stars to be fair.

This series is just delightful. No, it's not fine literature, but if you're driving or doing chores, it's highly entertaining. The characters are nuanced enough and the stories are interesting. Just finished #3 and am bereft of joy that there's no #4...yet?

I appear to really be getting into "cozy mysteries". I'm having fun, and this is no different. It's the second book of the series (of which I've listened to the first and third), and it seems to keep me on my toes. There are enjoyable twists and surprises. Fun, relaxing, read (or listen, as the case may be :-) )

Another good book

Overall, this book is okay. The main character, Jill, isn't very bright and there are many times when I had to shake my head at her thoughtlessness. There is a very good supporting cast of characters and the mystery plot is actually very good. I would recommend this to anyone who likes light mysteries and a little romance.

I have this book with a different narrator, Barbara Rosenblat has done so many of these books, she real grows on you with her personality and depth. the rest of the review is below...

this is another book in which the main character stumbles into the answer, despite all the clues to lead to the criminal. the plot was good, the narrator brought the characters to life, but the pure luck of the lead character is getting old.

This is book 17 in the Temperance Brennan Series

Another great book in the series. I like Katherine Borowitz performance of this book. The first-person-diary style of this book may not be for everyone but I like it.

The only bad about this book is that it is not listed as part of the Temperance Brennan series. Maybe it is because Kathy Reichs changed publishers.

Series like this must make a lot of money for Amazon and Audible, you would think they would make an easy way to subscribe to (or sign-up for alerts for) a series. I have spent over $200 on this series and over one thousand dollars on the other series I enjoy yet I need to log-in several times per month to manually check for new books.

If you are a fan of the Temperance Brennan series, I hope I am glad you managed to find this because it is definitely worth the listen.

Never Reaches It's Potential

The raw material was here for a great book. The psychology of the criminals and the crimes worked; there was a nasty cop who derided the efforts of Tempe, Ryan, and Skinny Slidell who gets his due in the end. So why did I end up giving it only three stars? 1) Way too much superfluous detail which did nothing to move the story forward. 2) The lack of astute police work; Tempe seemingly has developed a penchant for stream of consciousness hypothetical questions to which she expects answers. For instance a key piece of information as to how a dead woman's DNA was transferred to a victim's was painfully obvious to anyone actually listening to the audiobook.

Entertaining and compelling

This was such a cool audiobook. I really enjoyed the narrators portrayal of Jill, the main character. She was able to capture a broad range of emotion. On one hand Jill appears weak but you can hear and feel her growth as the book progresses. Jills friend Emily is murdered and leaves her property to Jill. The detective, Greg King, is working the case and becomes Jills love interest. Set in a small town there are many secrets that are uncovered throughout the course of the book. I enjoyed all of the characters, especially Aunt Jackie and the narrator did a great job playing all the parts. I would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a murder/mystery. Cant wait to check out the second part, Mission to Murder.

Guidebook to Boredom

What would have made Guidebook to Murder better?

An author who doesn't think that women are helpless, stupid creatures who spend most of their time agonizing over if a man they speak to every day MIGHT be married, but are completely incapable of actually asking the question. Apparently, if a woman finds out a man she's attracted to is married, her whole life might fall apart. I understand it was just a plot device, but it is was a lazy, unnecessary one.

Also, a main character who has at least a drop of common sense, especially considering that she is apparently a lawyer.

What could Lynn Cahoon have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Write characters who have some personality and complexity.

Would you be willing to try another one of Susan Boyces performances?

No. Its not so much a performance as merely a reading, and it is very robotic. Also, she's the wrong narrator for the main character. Susan Boyce's voice makes the main character seem much older than I think is intended, and as a result, the main character comes across as a ridiculous cougar.

Very Whiny and Slow

What did you like best about Guidebook to Murder? What did you like least?

This book would have been good except that the protagonist was way too whiny and passive. I had to discontinue listening about half way through because I couldn't stand it anymore. Too bad, because the author is a good writer, just needs to be more realistic about a woman asking a man who is pursuing her if he is married or not. Simple. Protagonist appeared to be stupid about how city councils and appeals work.

Fascinating Final Twist

Majority of the book is a very realistic crime thriller with believable and interesting characters. It does start a little slowly for my tastes.

The final act of the book is very tense and takes a fascinating turn. I'd compare it to Neil Gaiman's novel American Gods.

I have not heard these narrators before, but they were perfectly cast. They brought personality to each character and gave the story great texture.

Another fantastic book by Beukes. Wonderful mix of detective thriller, commentary on modern life and social media, keen observation of the impact of the economic downturn on a once-great city, exploration of the artistic process and mental health, with a final touch of the supernatural. The book is grounded by multiple narrative voices: a detective who struggles to balance work and single motherhood; her daughter who is navigating teenage life where social media has the power to consume and obliterate; an artist struggling with his work and sanity; a homeless man finding a way to survive in Detroit despite a fraught past; and a hipster-blogger-wannabe who is awash in pretension and an unattractive desire of recognition. Beukes manages some impressive character depth and sharp, believable dialog. She also depicts a struggling Detroit, weaving in realistic details and actual headlines to underscore plot points examining social media and how it drives daily life, for better or worse. In many ways, the book feels akin to a Stephen King in the best way -- no throwaway characters, no sloppy lines, no shortcuts in depicting the setting, and supernatural elements that accent rather than overwhelm the story.

Great story, awful narration

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Why on earth did MC Beaton switch from the fabulous Penelope Keith to this third rate narrator? Why? Did Ms. Keith die or something?

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Blood of an Englishman?

The plot was great as usual.

How could the performance have been better?

So many bad aspects of it I don't know where to start. The characters' voices were flat as a board. Penelope Keith usually narrates this series & has a gift for vividly bringing the characters to life.

Never. She has a terrible lisp (so do I so I don't feel bad mentioning it but I would not think voice artist would be an appropriate career choice for me) and no real differentiation between characters. Doesn't do men well. Nor does her agatha raisin have any depth.

I love the characters in Krueger's Cork O'Connor series. They are mostly back for this adventure, and, as always, adventure it is!

The story line involves rescuing girls of Ojibwe ancestry from the evils they often find when they run away from the reservation. As young as 13 or 14, they are often enticed into lives of prostitution and have nowhere to turn for safety. This brings Cork, along with Jenny and Henry and others, into the dangerous world of the Lake Superior docks in Duluth.

As is usually evident in this series, there's a spiritual element involving the "Windigo," a demon of myth and, in this case, a real man and his cohorts. Cork, Henry, and Jenny face physical danger and their personal devils and anxieties along the way.

So, the story moves along, and we are happy to be in the company of these people. My one concern is that Cork and his family (and extended family) have all become quite saintly. I miss the old conflict that Cork had with his wife. Henry has always served as the conscience of this world, and his spirituality and wisdom are believable and inspiring (although his physical exploits at nearly 100 stretch the imagination). I'm not quite ready to accept that all the characters have joined him in perfection.

Not sure where such flawless characters can go from here!

I guess this is the the end of Cork O'Connor series! I'm going to miss it because Windigo Island is one of the best with a lot action. With his daughter Jennie

Being a big part of the story. KRUEGER has other books that I will check out while I wait for his next O'conner book. Oh Chandler does a bad Indian voice.

What made the experience of listening to Windigo Island the most enjoyable?

It was enjoyable to listen to the story but the story itself was very dark.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Not quite on the edge but it certainly carries one along.

Which character as performed by David Chandler was your favorite?

It is hard to name a favorite character as they are all great but Cork O'Connor, of course, as the main character is my husband's favorite.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

A look into the underside of what happens to the young Native American girls who leave home.

This series of book by William Kent Krueger is my husband's favorite. We travel quite a bit so we listen to books in the car a good deal of the time and Cork O'Connor is his favorite.

Best of the Series

An intense look at a side of Minnesota (and many places) that is less magical than most of what we expect in the lake country. Familiar characters develop well, and the villains and victims are realistic.

Simultaneously interesting and infuriating

I did not enjoy this book as much I enjoyed the first two Frieda Klein books. In this particular story I found her to be far more annoying. The thread that sets her off on her "mystery tour" felt really weak. I just kept thinking "why are you doing this? Who cares?!". And then her being so closed off from everyone around her was just annoying. So much going unsaid was frustrating, but not enough to stop listening. I'll continue in the series, but man I hope she gets herself together.

A well written , well performed name mystery.

This is a modern English mystery whose characters suffer modern trials of bureaucratic politics and professional jealously. The mysteries themselves are not obvious nor predictable. The characters are interesting and believable even if some situations and motivations are a stretch. There is a serious undercurrent to the story of the murder of the perfect suburban housewife. This is the consequences of our actions and choices. I found it a thoughtful and entertained tale with a likable protagonist.

Can't get enough of Frieda!

What made the experience of listening to Waiting for Wednesday the most enjoyable?

The main character is very refreshing. She is very no nonsense and very practical. I also love the way the author holds back details of the main character's life and slowly reveals them in each new book. I have read all three available books with Frieda Klein as the main character and am looking forward to the next one.

What other book might you compare Waiting for Wednesday to and why?

Well, naturally, I would compare it to the first two books in the series, but perhaps because of the lead character's profession and her relationship with the police, the story reminds me slightly of the Alex Delaware novels by Jonathon Kellerman.
