Don't read this when you are home alone!
Would you listen to She Can Scream again? Why?
Listening to this book was like watching a horror movie - you really didn't want to know who was hiding behind the door but you couldn't turn your eyes away. For this reason I am sure there are small parts of this book that I missed and so I know I will listen to it again.
'She Can Scream' was extremely well written and as with other books in this series it had that 'I didn't see that coming' edge to it.
What was one of the most memorable moments of She Can Scream?
Most memorable was when the killer made himself known - he was the last person I thought of.
    Which scene was your favorite?
I guess my favourite scene was when Brooke and Luke were able to see that what had happened to them in the past was something that while terrible and shattering - was not something they could have prevented from happening. It's great to know that there lives will not be forever ruled by moments in the past.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
You can scream but you cannot hide!
    Any additional comments?
Amy Rubinate's narration was excellent. 'She Can Scream' is well worth the credit.
Fun read but more of the same
I've read (listened to) the first 3 in this series. They are good story lines with twist endings you may not see coming. By the third, however, pretty redundant. Same story with minor changes. While I still enjoyed reading them, the narrators voices are sooo annoying. One whiny and shrill, the other breathy. I would have enjoyed the story more if read by another.
One more entry in the how dumb can you be genre...
Yet another heroine who apparently is too dumb to follow her own advice (she is a women's self defense instructor) and an author who apparently thinks the reader is even dumber than the heroine. This story is frustrating in so many ways, the only thing I enjoyed was its end. Save your money and your time, pass on this one.
Only ok, not as good as the first two books
She Can Scream was ok, but not the quality of the first two books in the series.
    ok
This book is too much like her other novels.

    Steamy Cozy Mystery
This is a really interesting book that caught my attention in the beginning and held me until the very end. It wasn't perfect but the flaws were not enough to make me stop reading. I will say upfront this is a touch racier than your typical cozy mystery, more on that later.
I generally liked Violet, she had a snarky wit and can do attitude. She was a bit over run by her kids, they totally ran her life. Her job struggles were relateable and you really felt her frustration. She seemed to be doused in some kind of love potion, for real how many fellas does a gal need? At one point she had no less than 4 men wanting to get with her. I know that was meant to be funny but in my opinion it missed the mark.
There were some really funny moments in the story. Her kids are a hoot, even if you want to shake them at times! Her slightly slutty best friend adds a touch of drama. I would have loved to see more of her hippy Aunt Zoey. Her first client Harvey is a laugh riot!! I hope we see much more of him in future books!
This is a single POV, only getting Violet's side of things. She is very helpful in sharing her insights as they happen. It might be nice to get some of the other character's thoughts. But then some off the twists wold have been revealed too early.
There are a couple romantic prospects and things eventually get steamy. Kind of a surprise for the type of book. While not as detailed as an erotic read, the bedroom door is wide open and things get hot! I am still deciding how I feel about that story wise. It was very abrupt and while the characters were lusting after each other, it felt off.
The mystery is detailed and well developed. I would have liked more of the ghost angle throughout. That seemed like a missed opportunity. While I quickly caught on to the bad guy, I did not see that motive. Almost made me feel bad for the guy, until you recall he was killing little girls.
I listened to the audiobook narrated by Caroline Shaffer. She does an excellent job. She had a real feel for the characters and helped the story flow. She has a brisk read, which I enjoy. She had great voices, distinct and consistent. Great comedic timing, especially with old man Harvey. She could have used a touch more energy during the action and smexy scenes. I never felt urgency in her voice. I will definitely boo looking to check out more of her reads.
Ended on a cliffhanger, more like a teaser for the next book. Most of the major plot points of this mystery were wrapped up.

    Title: Second Watch
    Subtitle: A J. P. Beaumont Novel, Book 21
    Author: J. A. Jance
    Narrator: J. R. Horne
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 44 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 306 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
New York Times best-selling author J. A. Jance delivers an emotional and resonant mystery that takes us deep into Seattle detective J. P. Beaumont's past and raises challenging questions about duty, honor, and the debt that is owed to those who sacrifice their lives for their country.
Getting old is hell. J. P. Beaumont is finally taking some time off to have knee-replacement surgery. But instead of taking his mind off work, the operation plunges him into one of the most perplexing and mind-blowing mysteries he's ever faced. A series of dreams takes him back to his early days on the force with the Seattle PD, and then even earlier, to his days in Vietnam, reminding him of people and events he hasn't thought about in years.
When tugging on those threads from long ago leads to present-day murders, Beau's suspicions are confirmed. Some bodies from the second watch just won't stay buried. A masterful demonstration of J. A. Jance's superb craftsmanship, Second Watch is a thought-provoking novel that is also a poignant look at one of the most painful and divisive moments in our history - Vietnam - and a reminder of the staggering cost of war and the debts we owe to those who served then...and those who do now.

    a unique idea
After writing 20 books about Beaumont what can an author do different? Jance certainly came up with a unique twist for the twenty first book. I found the weaving of fiction with non-fiction a distinctive idea. Beau is in the having both knees replaced and has had some hallucination with his pain medication that triggers him to ask to open a cold case, his first homicide. He is also hallucinating about his Lieutenant from his Army days in Viet Nam. What Jance does with these two plots is interesting and different from her usual stories. One is non-fiction the other is fiction, there is of course suspense, some action, and humor as she weaves her story. In this book she also brings in Bisbee, Arizona and Sherriff Joan Brady in a brief appearance. J.R. Home did a good job narrating the book. If you are a fan of Jance you will enjoy her new book.
    Loved this book
i wasn''t familiar with this author until i saw her on the TV series "Greed," telling her true story. Now I wanna write a book with as much heart felt writing as this. Bravo. THis book left me with chills going up my back.
    Too Much Repeated information
If you have read previous books in this series, then this book will feel very tedious. There's so much backstory for JP Beaumont that it takes pages and pages to summarize all of that. The past event summarizing seems to go on forever--very tedious if you have read the previous novels.
In addition, there is a very, very long series of flashbacks involving a 2nd story about Vietnam Veterans that is completely separate from the main mystery.
With all this extra material, I really lost interest in the main mystery. Tedious, tedious, tedious. I think this is the last J.A. Jance book that I'll purchase.
    Good listen
A different style than previous books. Good narrator and storyline. Interesting all the way through.
    Oustanding in the series
I love all of the JP Beaumont books, but this in particular was a standout. Full of insight and emotion for JP. Finally, a narrator who is as good as Gene Engene.

    A Nice Change
This is pretty lightweight, but it makes a pleasant diversion for summer listening - good choice for the June 2-for-1 credit offering. It doesn't require a long time commitment.
I don't mean this in a bad way. There's a place in most of our reading lives for the modern "cozy" with a bit of mystery, a bit of romance, a bit of humor, and a little bit of information about historic restoration and history. I won't mention a bit of occult, because the "ghost" plot line in "If Walls Could Talk" is basically just silly. I don't know if Blackwell intends to expand this aspect in future books of the series, but it's not taken at all seriously here.
Not bad, but doesn't quite take off
I got this book because the synopsis read similar to the "Haunted Guesthouse" novels by EJ Copperman. I'll lay out those similarities first:
-- Both have women who are handy (taught by their dads) and go to renovate an old Victorian.
-- Both women realize they can see and communicate with ghosts while in the home.
-- Both are mystery novels in which the ghosts they find need help solving their murders.
-- Both have narrators with irksome tendencies.
That said, it was an enjoyable listen, though it never quite seemed to take off, and sort of tumbled to its resolution. We meet up with Mel Turner as she heads over to see the aftermath of a DIY demolition party. She arrives, someone dies, and the tale begins.
I won't spoil things, but this book is partly set up to have Mel discover how she gained her abilities. Frustratingly though, the reader is likely to figure it out before her because she seems very uninterested and often changes the subject quickly when someone is spilling the beans on her "condition" and things that relate to it. As more and more pieces fall into place, I found myself not caring since I'd figured it out already. Move onto the mystery!
As for the actual mystery, it's your typical whodunnit with Red Herrings all over the place, which all mostly get resolved in one very odd scene which prompts another very odd scene. Mystery solved, but didn't feel all that fulfilling. I didn't feel like I was part of the "learning" process -- well, scratch that, you are, but the things you "learn" don't really help solve the mystery. In the end, Mel gets "determined", figures it out on her own, and the book ends. Sort of a let down.
As for the narrator, she's sort of the opposite of EJ Copperman's reader (Amanda Ronconi) in that instead of being whiny and annoying, she sounds like she's trying to be seductive and sultry. Listening in the car became hard as her sentences all seemed to be read in one breath. She'd start out loud and end the sentence in a breathy whisper. The voices of all the male characters sounded like guys on their deathbeds.

    Over Too Soon
Once again, another fun and lively Andy Carpenter novel with all our favorite characters. The thing in David's novels that always leaves me wanting more is all the humor they contain. I end up laughing out loud at many inappropriate moments. I highly recommend this book for anyone who likes their suspense mixed with laughter. There's no better author in this genre and this is still my favorite series by far.
    Didn't see that coming
While all the Andy Carpenter books follow a similar pattern there are always enough differences and surprises to keep it interesting. Unleashed is no exception. Add in several off the wall characters as well as Andy's snarky humor and it's still one of my favorite series. Unfortunately it was done all too soon and now I have to wait until the next installment.
Rosenfelt and Gardner do it well again
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
The whole series of Andy books should be heard by all. I would recommend this book to all of the Audible Universe.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Actually it took me two days to finish listening. The plot, characters, language as pronounced by the narrator were outstanding. Andy never gets old.
    Any additional comments?
I can not wait for the next book.
Not one of the best, but still good reading
First a confession - I think the Andy Carpenter series by David Rosenfelt is just plain terrific. This comes from a person who has been reading mysteries - starting with Sherlock Holmes - for 6 decades. I've read literally thousands of mysteries, and I put Andy Carpenter and company right in the top group. Good writing, good characters, interesting mysteries, an ensemble cast - just as important in a book series as in any form of entertainment - and wit. Love the wit. This one seems a little less together than usual - which still makes it a must read - don't pass it by - but do get all the others as well.
And Grover Cleveland the reader - I could write a sonnet about his reading of this series. Absolutely perfect. Doesn't miss a beat, and I can't imagine anyone else speaking with Carpenter's voice.

    Poor Narration
Is there anything you would change about this book?
    The narration
If youve listened to books by Catherine Coulter before, how does this one compare?
It is hard to get past the poor narration. It changes the whole timber of the book.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Renee Raudman and Paul Costanzo ?
Jim Meskimen and Deanne Hurst. Actually I have been happy with all the narrators up until this one.
    Any additional comments?
The narration can make or break a book
    Typical Catherine Coulter
The storyline is typical of the author...not very deep...you need not think too much about what's going on. Unfortunately, Paul Costanzo is a rather bad narrator and Renee Raudman isn't much better. (We get spoiled by the really good narrators.)
Narration so bad I wish I'd bought print version
I've loved all Coulters previous FBI books, but the narration is so bad in this one I put it down after a half hour. I'll wait for it to be available through the library.
I see the same team has done some of the others, but they must have been the ones I read in print.
This team sounds like amateurs reading to an elementary school class and I will not buy another book with these narrators.
    Hard to listen to!
Is there anything you would change about this book?
    the Narrator!
Would you recommend Bombshell to your friends? Why or why not?
    Not particularly
How could the performance have been better?
The Narration was so distracting, I had a very difficult time following the story. If the Narrator is a professional, why would he be so dull, so choppy and do such a bad job adapting his voice to the male characters??
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
I would probably need to read the book first - to see if I enjoy the story.
    Any additional comments?
    HELP! My ears are protesting!!
    Worst narration of any book
I couldn't finish due narration. It was choppy and sounded like someone in grade school was reading to me. Wasted a credit on this one.

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
One of the most likable vigilante serial killers (The New Yorker) faces his ultimate adversaryan evil so terrifying it scares away Dexters inner monster - and nearly dries up his sense of humor - in this wickedly witty, darkly suspenseful novel.
In his work as a Miami crime scene investigator, Dexter Morgan is accustomed to seeing evil deedsparticularly because, on occasion, he rather enjoys committing them himself. Guided by his Dark Passenger (the reptilian voice inside him), he lives his outwardly normal life adhering to one simple rule: He kills only very bad people. Dexter slides through life undetected, working as a blood spatter analyst for the Miami Police Department, helping his fiancée raise her two adorable (if somewhatunique) children, and always planning his next jaunt as Dexter the Dark Avenger under the light of the full moon.
But then everything changes. Dexter is called to a crime scene that seems routine: a gruesome double homicide at the university campus, which Dexter would normally investigate with gusto, before enjoying a savory lunch. And yet this scene feels terribly wrong. Dexters Dark Passenger senses something it recognizes, something utterly chilling, and the Passenger - mastermind of Dexters homicidal prowess - promptly goes into hiding.
With his Passenger on the run, Dexter is left to face this case all alone - not to mention his demanding sister (Sergeant Deborah), his frantic fiancée (Rita), and the most frightening wedding caterer ever to plan a menu. Equally unsettling, Dexter begins to realize that something very dark and very powerful has its sights set on him. Dexter is left in the dark, but he must summon his sharpest investigative instincts not only to pursue his enemy, but to locate and truly understand his Dark Passenger. To find him, Dexter has to research the questions hes never dared ask: Who is the Dark Passenger, and where does he come from? It is nothing less than a search for Dexters own dark soulfueled by a steady supply of fresh doughnuts.
Macabre, ironic, and wonderfully entertaining, Dexter in the Dark goes deeper into the psyche of one of the freshest protagonists in recent fiction. Jeff Lindsays glorious creativity is on full display in his most accomplished novel yet.
    Critic Reviews:
"Its like very little else youve read. Imagine if Hannibal Lecter starred in CSI: Miami, and youre halfway there." (Time)
"Maybe the first serial killer who unabashedly solicits our love." (Entertainment Weekly)
"The real appeal of this macabre tour-de-force is Dexters sardonic voice, so snappy and smart, and yet so full of self-loathing that we hate ourselves for laughing." (New York Times)

Wow. Dark Dexter Does It Again.
I think Jeff Lindsay really does the Dexter voice well. I would hope so, as he is the author. The thing that I hate about the Dexter books is that I wind up liking and rooting for a sociopath and murderer.

    Narrator/editor should have checked
What three words best describe Hillary Hubers voice?
Professional, but uninformed. Hillary Huber provides good voice characterizations, but has clearly not spent much time in Atlanta. It pained me to hear her mispronounce VERY well known places like Dekalb and Chamblee. The un-Atlanta pronunciation was further evidenced in words like Valdosta and even the word skirmish was bizarre, pronounced "skymarsh". Not all southern accents are the same and I am sure the narrator knows this. I think Ms |Huber researches pronunciation, but clearly did not do enough checking for this Atlanta based series.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I listened to this on my drive home from work. Entertaining story even though references were a bit dated. Overall it was an enjoyable way to unwind. I only wish the narration had been better.
    Any additional comments?
Proof readers edit misspelling ( among other things) in written text. Who edits the mispronunciations in audio versions?
    Another good book
Callahan Garrity is becoming a new favorite. To Live and Die in Dixie has likeable characters, believable plots and a fast pace. It's a great book to listen to while doing chores or driving to work.
    Really enjoyed this series
Enjoyed listening to this book for a second time. Funny, southern and suspenseful. Looking forward to the next book in the series
    Great Series

Solid Second Book In A Series
I've had such a difficult time recently with mystery series that have great first books and then lousy, often rushed follow up books. Thank goodness that isn't the case with this series set in wild Montana. I enjoyed book one and to me book two may even be better.
Be aware, this second entry in the series is more focused on hunting, ammunition and guns--but it still has some fly fishing, streams and fly tying too--so not to worry. The characters are more fully developed, the dialogue good and the descriptions of wild Montana beauty excellent.
This is becoming a series that I am beginning to look forward to. Engaging, some gruesome detail of violence and rough talk. However, overall consistent and well written. Looking forward to book three.
    Pure Enjoyment!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
    Good storyline
    Good narration
    Good characterization
What else can I say.... ah yes, I would recommend to someone else and I can't wait for another book by Keith McCafferty.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Gray Ghost Murders?
The fact that someone can develop a story line around fishing lures is memorable to me!
What does Rick Holmes bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
I love the sound of his voice as Shanahan
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I could not "put it down". Had to listen to it all.
    Any additional comments?
Waiting to hear more from Keith.......
    Another great addition
Keith McCafferty has written another great addition to the Sean Strangham series. The characters continue to grow. Rick Holmes does a great job bringing the characters to life.
    Getting hooked on this series
Love the characters in this series, so glad I found these books. As an avid fly fisherman and hiker I'm really enjoying the balance between the story and the beautifully depicted landscapes.

    Publisher's Summary:
Featuring the gripping plot, dramatic settings and believable characters that listeners have come to expect from Dick Francis, To the Hilt displays the master at the top of his form.
Alexander Kinloch is definitely the black sheep of his noble family, choosing the precarious life of a painter over a lucrative job in his stepfathers brewery. But when a trusted assistant disappears with millions of pounds, Alexander is reluctantly thrust into a foreign world of bankers and auditors. Brutal thugs and jealous relatives stand in his way as he labors to save the business and protect the family treasures. In the face of adversity, Alexander must defend himself and his familys honor to the hilt.
After three dozen novels, Dick Francis maintains his reputation as one of the most popular mystery writers of our time. Both suspenseful and poignant, To the Hilt is a wild ride through a perilous adventure.

    Relaxed Entertainment
Dick Francis novels are not only entertaining, but we also learn a little bit about horse racing and the world of horse racing along with what some people will do in the name of winning the trophy and greed for money. The main characters are always someone to be admired for their courage, integrity and their loyalty to family and friends.
The Publisher's Summary gives a good description of this story. Dick Francis mysteries may not be for everybody. If you want an interesting story performed by an excellent narrator, then you may love these novels performed by Simon Prebble. His voice suits the pace and energy of these novels. Most times, I don't want to hear fast talking narrators. I want a chance to absorb who the major and minor players are and what the story is about without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. Prebble and other excellent narrators, makes you feel that you are a part of the story as opposed to being read a story.
This one is a must for Dick Francis followers and mystery lovers in general.
    Excellent as usual
What made the experience of listening to To the Hilt the most enjoyable?
The James Bond of the equine world rides again! Great storytelling by the narrator and a great story by Francis. The other great thing about Francis is you get to learn a little about another subject. In this case, painting with acrylics.
What does Simon Prebble bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Further character development. The thing with excellent narrators , like Prebble, is you feel you are a part of the story as a opposed to being read a story, usually by an American who sounds angry and abrasive.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
    No.
    Any additional comments?
    No.
    Riveting!
Great story! I read this years ago and enjoyed listening to again just as much. The characters are very well written.
    My First Dick Francis
And why did I wait so long? Great book and characters. Can't wait to listen to more of his works.
    Another winner
Great plot though difficult to follow sometimes because of the accent and items and places challenging to the American ear, which of course is all part of the charm. I still can't rectify the 50-ish sounding narrator, though he has a flawless performance (well, maybe not some of the female characters). The story to me indicates the main character is in his 30's, yet the narrator sounds 50-ish++.
