    Sound is bad
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I could barely hear the narrator, even when I turned the volume up.
What was most disappointing about Nevada Barrs story?
    The story was good.
How could the performance have been better?
The performance was probably very good, as this narrator is usually great, but the sound quality was awful.
    Terrible Production - couldn't finish
I love Nevada Barr novels, but the production was so fuzzy and the volume so wonky that I could not finish listening to this book. If I had the volume up loud enough to hear a low-pitched voice my ears would get blasted when a higher-pitched character spoke. Plus it was often fuzzy sounding.
    Loved It
I love the Anna Pigeon character. I've read several of the series and never tire of the stories. Nevada Barr's writings are well written and easy to read. Pick this book up and be ready for relaxed enjoyment.
    National Park Detective Shines
I love this series. Master Narrator, Barbara Rosenblat, makes the heroine, Anna Pidgeon, come alive. Author, Nevada Barr, never disappoints. These stories are educational, thought provoking and provide hours of interesting suspense.

The story is good; the performance is good, but the recording is like at the bottom of well. Very difficult to hear even at the highest volume.

    Publisher's Summary:
Hunting a killer within New York's urban jungle becomes the biggest case of Alexandra Cooper's career in New York Times best-selling author Linda Fairstein's latest thriller.
A wild heart beats within New York City. Amid concrete and skyscrapers, the Wildlife Conservation Society works to preserve and protect the animal kingdom both within and beyond the borders of the five boroughs. But dangerous creatures don't always have claws and fangs, as Assistant DA Alexandra Cooper and NYPD detectives Mike Chapman and Mercer Wallace know all too well. Predators lurk close to home, and in the aftermath of the shocking drive-by murder of an important city employee - someone Alex has worked with for years - the trio must discover who the bigger snake is: the killer or the victim.
Investigations into the death provide more questions than answers as a tangled mess of secrets slowly comes to light. From bribes to secret societies, from big-game hunting to the illegal animal trade, from New York City zoos to behind closed doors in government buildings, Alex will have her work cut out for her if she wants to uncover the truth - and uphold the integrity of the office she has so proudly served.

    Excellent installment
As always Linda Fairstein and Barbara Rosenblat team up for an excellent installment in the Alex Cooper series. With well developed characters that continue to grow, and storylines that touch modern cases but are original for today's writings Ms Fairstein is more than a cut above the rest. Ms Rosenblat, as always, brings the characters and settings to life. I highly recommend this book.
    Disappointed
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
No because it was not enjoyable.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The DA's murder was the most interesting. The least was Alexandra Cooper whining all the way through the book.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
The male voices were better than the females. Whining. Barbara Rosenblat was disappointing the reading was not suspenseful it was just plain reading and whining.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    No
    Any additional comments?
I usually love Linda Fairstein....I feel like you are failing Alexandra Cooper....once strong now just weak and whiny. Yes, she has been through enough now she's so dependent on men. Too bad.
    poor Alex
main character was too steeped in self pity for the book to be enjoyable. Poor little rich prosecutor.
    Too much whining
I absolutely love the series. But seriously Alex has become far to needy in the last two books Much prefer her as the strong and let's get it done DA.
Took me awhile to get through it.
Would you try another book from Linda Fairstein and/or Barbara Rosenblat?
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
It got very tiresome reading the whining, whining, whining coming from main character. So much so that it made it hard for me to get through it. I won't be one of the first to buy the next book in the series. I am going to wait and read other reviews first.

    Good cozy mystery
CeeCee James has written a good cozy mystery. The main character is likable. Katie Habib gave a decent job of bringing the characters to life.
    One more rewrite, please.
While the author conceived a good basic plot, the addition of some suspense would have strengthened it. The characters are shallow and predictable, their voices all presented in a gritty, nasal, regional quality which made listening to them a chore. To say the presentation was colorless would be kind. The author should try again. The narrator should not.

The sixth novel in the acclaimed Sean Stranahan mystery series
Sheriff Martha Ettinger reunites with once-again lover and sometime private detective Sean Stranahan to investigate the death of a woman who was stranded in a spring snowstorm. When a fly wallet is found in a pannier on the saddle of the woman's horse, the leather engraved with the initials EH, Stranahan shows the wallet to Patrick Willoughby, the president of the Madison River Liars and Fly Tiers Club. Only a few days before, Willoughby was approached by a man selling fishing gear that had belonged to a famous outdoorsman and writer. All the clues point to an obsession with Ernest Hemingway, and Sean soon finds himself on the trail of a missing steamer trunk rumored to contain not only the writer's valuable fly fishing gear but perhaps even priceless samples of his unpublished work.
The investigation leads Sean into the salacious world of Chinese traditional medicines and through one extraordinary chapter in Hemingway's life to another. From a trout river in Michigan where a woman grapples with the cold in her hands and heart to the ruins of Havana and finally to a cabin in Wyoming under the Froze to Death Plateau, Keith McCafferty's latest novel in the Sean Stranahan mystery series is a thrilling tale.

    Very very good book
Great character development, interesting content, mystery is seen through thick opaque glass, and the overall feeling from the narratives one of lighthearted joy that all will be well. Conversational dialogue is excellent and real, perhaps the highlight of the book. The narration was simply excellent. Get the book and enjoy yourself. Mike Dunn

If a mystery involves mountains, horses, fly fishing, Ernest Hemingway and a leisurely read of Literary Import...set in today's cell phone and high tech world...
well, I'll listen to it twice. I had trouble stopping for any interruption. Perfect for bored redtless minds on a hot, humid summer day.
    too much unrelated sex in.

too much emphasis on carnal activities unrelated and not necessary to story line which was excellent. nice to see wild Kitty and owner survived.
Sad to finally be done with the series!
I really enjoyed these books, buying and listening to the whole series over the last month or so. Great job by both Keith McCafferty, with his depictive stories, and by Rick Holmes for narrating every book in the series and making me laugh inwardly every time he says "current."
    Good story.
Narrator is awesome. Good story . Rwcommend that your read but start with the first book.

I really wanted to like the story, but it was very generic and the character didn't really have depth.

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
In this brilliant crime novel from the author of Missing, Presumed, a detective investigates her most personal case yet: a high-profile murder in which her own family falls under suspicion.
As dusk falls, a young man staggers through a park, far from home, bleeding from a stab wound. He dies where he falls, cradled by a stranger, a woman's name on his lips in his last seconds of life.
Detective Manon Bradshaw handles only cold cases. Five months pregnant, in pursuit of a work-life balance rather than romantic love, she's focused on being a good mother to her two children: her adopted 12-year-old son, Fly Dent, and the new baby.
But the man died just yards from the police station where she works, so Manon can't help taking an interest. And as she sidles in on the briefing she learns that the victim, a banker from London worth millions, is more closely linked to her than she could have imagined. When the case begins to circle in on Manon's home and her family, she finds herself pitted against the colleagues she once held dear: Davy Walker and Harriet Harper.
Can Manon separate what she knows about the people she loves from the suspicion hanging over them? Can she investigate the evidence just as she would with any other case? Persons Unknown shows acclaimed author Susie Steiner writing her most intricate, suspenseful novel yet.
    Critic Reviews:

    Beautiful!!!!!
Would you consider the audio edition of Persons Unknown to be better than the print version?
I dont read printed books anymore due to headaches.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Manon. Down to earth, relatable , a very realistic character.
What about Juanita McMahons performance did you like?
She is one hell of an actress. She is spot on with amazing voices and makes this book absolutely lyrical. These are two rare books where author and reader come together perfectly.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Yes, i had a range of emotions. It made me laugh and cry.
    Any additional comments?
Get this book. If there are negative reviews im not sure what they could possibly be. I think nowadays people cannot sit still without nonstop action. This is not that kind of book. This is a book to be apppreciated like a good meal. Susan Steiner can write. She is not just a good storyteller, she knows how to write. After each of these books they left me unable to get into another book until i could forget them. Thats hard to do....they really stayed with me. These books are most certainly mysteries, but they are also slice of life books. The characters and their stories will stay with you.
    Deeply Satsfying

Some Amish communities aren't so cozy.
The death of a teenage Amish girl in a cornfield looks like an accident, but sheriff Serenity Adams suspects foul play. To solve the murder, she must investigate the nearby Amish community with the help of a man who was shunned years ago.
At first glance, the case seems obvious. The poor girl was probably accidently shot during hunting season, but when the elders of the Amish community and even the girl's parents react with uncaring subdued behavior, Serenity becomes suspicious. As she delves deeper into the secretive community that she grew up beside, she discovers a gruesome crime from the past that may very well be related to the Amish girl's shooting.
Serenity's persistence leads her to a stunning discovery that not only threatens to destroy her blossoming romance with Daniel Bachman, but may even take her life in the end.

Small Town Indiana and the Amish
The book had the makings of a great story . . . but a couple of things ruined it for me . . . first off, the negative portrayal of the Amish as a people, with no respect given for their faith or way of life, and secondly, the language and unprofessional attitude of the smart-mouthed sheriff, Serenity Adams . . . who is one minute focused on finding a killer, and the next minute acting like a teenager infatuated with ex-Amish heart throb, Daniel Bachman. So much of the tale just did not jive . . . young Amish girls "fooling around" shamelessly with first one boy then another . . . and Amish parents heartlessly burying their dead children . . . there's a difference between being quiet, private people and being callous and cold . . . none of the beautiful hard working, steadfast qualities of the Amish are depicted here . . . instead something sinister and evil is implied . . . the writing is amateurish and lacks depth . . . I finished the book, but will not be going on to the others in the series . . .
    Murder and the amish?
The narrator did A good job. The book was written well and interesting. I kept trying to guess what was going to happen next in this book, but I was always surprised in the end.
    Intriguing Storyline
This was my first K.A. Hopkins novel and I was very pleased with it. The details of the Amish culture were very interesting and eye opening. The storyline wove characters intricately together so skillfully that I had no difficulty picturing each one in my mind's eye. I'm excited to begin the next novel in the series.
    A bit too obvious
An interesting topic, likeable characters but just not enough depth or intrigue for me. Though I did manage to listen to all of it.

Norwich is riddled with old chalk-mining tunnels, but no one's sure exactly how many. Once more she finds herself at the helm of a murder investigation.
Meanwhile, DCI Nelson is hunting for a missing homeless woman, Barbara, who he hears has gone "underground". Could she have disappeared into the labyrinth? And if so, is she connected to the body Ruth found?
As Ruth, Nelson, and the rest of their team investigate the tunnels, they hear rumors of secret societies, cannibalism, and ritual killings. When a dead body is found with a map that appears to be of The Underground, they realize their quest to find the killer has only just begun - and that there may be more bodies underfoot.

    Soap opera, too little detection
A glut of characters all of whom seem to have high drama in their personal lives. Occasionally a missing person mystery will come up but nobody seems to be anxious to do any detection just discuss it! Tried to hold on but could not keep track of the players!
It just ended. And I'm in tears. The good kind.
The series stays as strong as it has been. Looking forward to the next book!
    Excellent Read/Performance
Loved this book on several levels- the continued character development as well as the story line. Great set up for the next Dr. Ruth Galloway novel.
Jane McDowell is the perfect narrator.
    Light on detection
    Any additional comments?
Increasingly this series tends to focus on rather banal family dramas among its central characters. As with the other books in the series, spending time with its characters was quite pleasant, but this storyline was particularly notable for how comparatively little detection actually went on. Mysteries were presented, but solving them seemed to be fairly haphazard, and the main protagonist had more of an accidental (and incidental) relationship to the crimes than in previous books. Sufficiently enjoyable for fans of the series, but this would not be a good one to start with for those new to it.
    Love the Ruth Downie Series!
What made the experience of listening to The Chalk Pit the most enjoyable?
I have been following the series since the beginning and I what I have found most enjoyable is learning what is happening in the lives of the characters. Elly Griffith's has a magical way of developing her characters. I want to know what is going to happen next, and just when I think everything is going to go like I want things to go, I get another surprise. Well done EG!
What other book might you compare The Chalk Pit to and why?
I would compare this book and the others in the Ruth Galloway series to the books in the Louise Penny Inspector Gamache series. Both of these authors get their readers invested in the lives of their characters. Both authors produce amazing books that touch on historical events and both authors are quite amazing.
What about Jane McDowells performance did you like?
Jane McDowell really makes the story come to life.
