    Another GREAT Dan Taylor story!
I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
The author does a tremendous job again of continuing to build Dan's character. This installment of the series was just as fun and well written. The narrator, too, has continued to do a great job of making the characters come to life. I feel like I used the adjective "great" far too much but it just fits my opinion of this series too well.
    Amazing!!
absolutely one of the best stories I've heard in a long time! You will not want to put it down!
    An amazing thriller.
Great book. I could not put it down. Twists and turns abound. Dan Taylor makes a great character. I received this audio book for free at my request and voluntarily reviewed.
    Great Storytelling
A fantastic story, well researched and plot twists you won't see coming. Excellent narration from the man with a hundred voices too. Five stars all the way
    Tense action thriller
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. Great action, brilliant narration and tense scenes which really keep you on the edge of your seat
Who was your favorite character and why?
Dan Taylor - a brilliant and flawed hero who is fighting for his own freedom and the safety of the UK.
What does Craig Beck bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
The different inflections in the speech, the dramatic pauses which add weight to the intensity of the action which you'd miss if you read it.

    Title: The Best Laid Plans

    Author: Sidney Sheldon
    Narrator: John Rubenstein
    Format: Abridged
Length: 3 hrs and 25 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-05-16
    Publisher: Phoenix Books
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Espionage
    Publisher's Summary:
The first entry in Leslie Stewart's diary read, "Dear Diary: This morning I met the man I am going to marry". It was a simple, optimistic statement, without the slightest portent of the dramatic chain of events that was about to occur.
The Best Laid Plans tells the impassioned story of the beautiful and ambitious Leslie Stewart and the handsome Southern governor Oliver Russell. She learns that for some, men with power are the greatest aphrodisiac; he learns why hell has no fury like a woman scorned.
With the unexpected twists and turns that are the hallmark of his best-selling novels, Sidney Sheldon spins a tale of the collision course driven by two equally determined people. Oliver has a strategy to win the White House; Leslie has a scheme to make him wish he'd never been born. They both should have known that even the best-laid plans could go dangerously astray, with deadly consequences.

Great book. A little suspense in a sense that you won't know what happens until the very end. There are a few different stories happening at the same time with different people that you won't know how they come together until the end. Great book, super recommended it!
    Five Stars
Sidney Sheldon - My favorite author. I purchased this for a dear friend - in LARGE PRINT
I read this book so fast because that's how good it is drawing you into the lives of power-players ...
Once again, Sidney Sheldon delivers! Whether or not you're a fan of his work, you will be held in a grip with this book. He's always had a way of truly bringing his characters to life and take you on a personal journey with them. Without meaning to, I read this book so fast because that's how good it is drawing you into the lives of power-players that won't stop for anything to reach the top of the power-ladder, no matter who they hurt along the way. A terrific surprise twist towards the end.....you won't be disappointed!!
    Not up to par
I read the hardcover of this book and was thinking to myself when Sheldon had started to write 6th grade books. The writing was a dobule spaced 12 font or something like that, I could have fit the entire book into one half it's length with proper type setting.
I mention this, because I think it was a ruse by the publisher to try and make this book more imrpessive than it really was. This book didn't have very good character development, and the plot twists were contrived; it seemed as though Sheldon wrote this book under duress, and didn't really care how it turned out so long as there was a final product.
I have read many of Sheldons books, and have enjoyed most if not all of them, I am really surprised at this book falling below the level of excellence that his other books have established.
This book is signature Sheldon with the plot twisting and exciting plot and setting, but is a pale shadow of some of his better work.
Read another one of Sheldons older works before you judge him from just this book, I feel that his earlier work is far better.
Highly recommend any Sidney Sheldon book!
Sidney really knows how to develop great complex characters! Good book!

    Spies as people
Reading The Envoy is somewhat like being on a double -helix staircase, with characters moving up and down in parallel but separated. The frailties of people, their needs and motivations is what makes the classic novel so interesting, like peering into rock pools or lifting stones.

    Fantastic!!!
A true page turner. Could not put it down until I had completed it. Looking forward to reading more of his clever spy/mystery writing.
    Good read
Enjoyed the intrigue. Plot a bit complicated and contrived I'm earlier part of book but ends well. Worth a read.
    Excellent!
One of the best espionage novels I've read. The author is one of the first I've read to accurately describe the US Foreign Service and the life of a diplomat.

    Publisher's Summary:
London. December 1981. The IRA is on the attack, a cold war is being waged, another war is just over the horizon, and Stephen Donaldson spends his days listening. When he first joined the Institute, he expected to encounter glamorous, high-risk espionage. Instead he gets the tape-recorded conversations of ancient Communists and ineffectual revolutionaries - until the day he is assigned a new case: the ultra-secret PHOENIX, a suspected internal leak.
The monotony of Stephen's routine is broken, but it's not PHOENIX who captures his imagination. It's the target's wife, Helen. Beset by isolation and loneliness, Stephen becomes dangerously obsessed with Helen, risking his job to keep his fragile connection to her and inadvertently setting himself up for a fall that will forever change his life.
With compassion and tenderness and moments of unexpected humor, Francesca Kay charts the way in which imagination, projection, and desire overwhelm the paucity of Stephen's life and identity. As beautiful as it is intense, The Long Room explores a mind under pressure and the wilder cravings of the heart.

    Exciting, suspenseful and mysterious !!
This book was a suspenseful, satisfying page turner. The narrator smoothly transported you through the plot's twists and turns, hooking you from beginning to end. Highly recommend!
Great mystery! Truly inspired narration plus a great story makes this a fantastic listen! Can't wait to download the next in series! --
I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.
    Fast passe political action
What made the experience of listening to The Kramski Case the most enjoyable?
It was a well balanced story, with action, political intrigues, murder, comedy, individuals with personalities and some romantic relationships.
Would you be willing to try another book from J. J. Ward? Why or why not?
Yes, realistic, intelligent and engaging with well developed individual characters. Well observed and described situations. I could recommend a simpler story line, all the twists was just a bit overwhelming for me.
What does Fiona Thraille bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Just the right amount of ascents and character voices, not detracting from the story.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes it was very engaging. I did not always follow the political agendas, but it did not hinder me following the story line.
    Any additional comments?
I recommend this book and will listen more from the author. "This audio book was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review."
JJ Ward is not JR Ward
This is a significant difference... This title by J. J. Ward and narrated with a gifted performance by Fiona Thraille, is a gripping thriller. Tho I've not read JR Ward it appears to be a different genre.

    Dan Taylor is a blast!
    4.5 out of 5 stars
White Gold -- no this is not about the gold that looks like silver, but really a way of refining down gold into a powder that creates energy as a by-product. White Gold is a Thriller featuring an ex-geologist turned soldier Dan Taylor. Dan's soldier days are behind him now and he is searching for meaning when an old friend calls him frantically one night setting off a spiral of action and mystery.
White Gold was narrated by Craig Beck who does a really nice job with it. The book was originally set in the UK, but ended up taking place all over, so Beck's voice ended up being really nice for this book. I did notice a few minor (super minor) faults in the audiobook where there was a repeated word or phrase (I think it happened 3 times) but sadly, I can't even report them to the author or narrator because I was driving every time I heard one. Other than that, the quality was pretty good.
Dan Taylor was a really likeable main character. I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about him in the beginning, but he really grew on me. He is definitely a character that I will continue to follow into other stories. The way that he goes about things and figures everything out was really interesting to me. I actually really liked Sarah too, I know that she wasn't meant to be the main character, but she was a really good #2 to Dan's #1 status.
The story started off with a bang, literally -- but still took a little bit of time to get rolling into the story. Amphlett took her time making sure that we understood who Dan was and a little bit about his friend that was in danger. After the first few chapters, the story took off and never slowed down. The action was fast and the story was really well thought out.
Overall, White Gold was a really enjoyable Thriller. Dan Taylor was the perfect "hero" for this story and I will definitely be signing on for more Amphlett books featuring Dan.
I was given a free copy of this audiobook in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion.

    Publisher's Summary:
A timely international thriller by the former deputy assistant secretary of state and best-selling author.
When four American sport fishermen stray into Cuban waters and are promptly arrested by Castro's navy, State Department crisis manager Judd Ryker finds himself called in to negotiate their release. But the more Ryker digs into the situation, the more things he discovers things that just don't seem to fit, especially now, with relations between the United States and Cuba supposedly thawing. Who are these men really, and what were they doing there? What is Ryker's actual mission, and what is his own government hiding from him? Some people want the new initiative to succeed. Others want to stop it at any cost. Still, others see it as an opportunity for something much more radical. The common factor for every one of them: the time to act is right this minute. The ghosts of Havana are walking, and Ryker is caught in the middle of them all.
    Members Reviews:
    A Great Read
"Ghosts of Havana" is a thriller in the purest sense: impeccably plotted at a breakneck pace, it will keep you turning the page. It starts with four men in a fishing boat captured by Cuba and moves forward in quick, cinematic bursts. The third book in the Judd Ryker series builds off momentum from "Minute Zero" but you do not need to have read either of the prior Ryker books. It is as much about Jessica, Ryker's CIA operative wife, as it is about Ryker himself, and Jessica proves a capable lead. The story is excellent: plausible and unexpected at every turn. It unfolds in concentric circles that implicate the State Department, the CIA, the DEA and Congress. It is populated with colorful characters, from shady financiers to bloviating bureaucrats. Moss artfully provides insights into the complexities of the U.S.-Cuba relationship, South Florida and Washington politics, and the alphabet soup of action agencies in the federal government while never sacrificing pace. This is a book you can enjoy at the beach and still come away the smarter for it. "Ghosts" is a must for fans of the Ryker series, diplo-thrillers in general and anyone looking for an Ian Fleming-style thrill ride.
    Another Ryker page turner
The third Ryker book does not disappoint: an international crisis, plenty of intrigue, boat chases, spies and secret meetings. Ryker once again saves the day with the help of his kick-ass wife Jessica. Cuba provides a back drop just as rich as the terrorists in the Sahel and dictators in Zimbabwe who populated the first two books in the series.
    Five Stars
    Great book
What a terrific series. well written fast moving
What a terrific series.well written fast moving, exciting and based on fact.
    Downhill Fast
Having enjoyed the first two in the Judd Ryker series, I bought Ghosts of Havana with an expectation that things would get even better. Sad to say that I found the opposite. The later novel seems to indicate that the author has run out of steam. He couldn't give Ghosts enough interest, and the marriage between Judd and his wife seems even more bizarre. I doubt that the CIA works as Mr. Moss would have us believe, and I wish he had stopped the series at two. Since Castro is about the only name associated with Cuba, why try to invent some new leader?

    Publisher's Summary:
A migrant boat battles through the rough Mediterranean. Its passengers are desperate, starving and scared. They are also being ruthlessly targeted by the SAS.
Islamic State militants are smuggling themselves into Europe using these boats. Only by locating such men before they make it into the UK can the Regiment stop them committing their acts of terror on British soil.
When one of these migrants reveals plans for a sickening Christmas Day atrocity in London, SAS operative Danny Black is tasked with infiltrating the most dangerous theatre of war in the world: Islamic State heartland. There, he and his team must lift a brutal IS commander - the only man who knows all the details of the London attack. The commander surrounds himself with vicious militants and a harem of sex slaves whom he treats in the most sadistic ways imaginable. And his jihadi wife is, if possible, even more abominable than he is.
As Danny pits himself against the violent thugs of the Islamic State, he learns that it is not just the UK that is under threat. His very presence on the mission has put at risk the safety of those closest to him. And he discovers that there are greater forces at work here who do not care if the innocent live or die.
Now there is nothing Danny will not do, no line he will not cross, to protect his family. Whether that makes him a good soldier or a bad soldier he neither knows nor cares. Because as he is fast learning, it is sometimes impossible to tell the difference between the two. And as every SAS soldier is trained to understand, the worst threats often come from the most unexpected places....

    Enjoyable Chris Ryan grit
The next instalment of the Danny Black series didn't leave me disappointed, with 3 sub plots keeping you guessing how they all come together. Only frustration was there will (Better be) another follow up to this so a certain character has his comeuppance.
The performance is good without any sound effects that other stories have which I personally don't like, always makes me smile when the reader with a tough sas soldier voice then has to speak as a female character.
If you have read the other Danny Black books it follows up well, plenty of action and a couple of twists
