Fantastic For the Children

As a child my father used to record books onto compact cassettes and on long journeys they would keep my sister and I entertained on long car journey's. This cd offers a great audiobook and contains the stories of Pinocchio, The Princess and the Pea and Tom Thumb. Pinocchio and Tom Thumb are read by Stephen Mangan and The Princess and the Pea is read by Tamsin Greig. I have recently listened to a number of audio books for children and have been stunned by some of them, in the complex way they use special effects and multiple voices that add very little to the production. In many cases I have thought that they were far too complex for the young children they supposedly target. With this CD there are no special effects and no multiple voices that can confuse, its just a CD that contains 3 wonderfully told and engaging stories. The CD lasts for about 45 minutes and I cannot recommend it enough.

Brilliantly told stories.

Adorable Story for All Children (and adults too!)

Where does Kama vs. Yama rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

I am a fan of Devdutt Pattanaik's books in general (the audiobook recording of Jaya: Mahabharata for example is fantastic), and this children's book conveys the same fun, intelligent, and very informative spirit of his other books. The audio performance is also very good: the reader does different voices for the different characters (a little girl, Kama the god of love and Yama the god of death but actually the god of Dharma, duty).

What did you like best about this story?

Pattanaik weaves so many different Indian myths and folktales into this short little book. These are stories that would appeal to anyone!

Which scene was your favorite?

My favorite is the story of the children who do nothing except what they are told! (Yes, as you can imagine, the parents end up being not very happy about that at all.)

Any additional comments?

Adult readers will enjoy this book as audio. For young readers, it would be important to get a printed copy of the book with the illustrations to help the children follow along while they listen to the book. I have a printed copy of the book, and the illustrations (by the author) are delightful.

We love this Fancy Nancy Story!

We are huge fans of Fancy Nancy in our home so we are building our collection. It started back with a lovely gift we got and from there it grew. My 10 year old with special needs thinks she's pretty "Fancy" with the words she uses and I like the lessons.

These books teach words that are what she will call "Fancy" ways of saying something else, for example Merci is a "Fancy" way to say thank you. I don't want to give away too much but this story basically starts when the students come up with an idea to have a "Fancy" day in the class, they go into the cute details of crowns, manners, and of course fancy clothes. Things kind of go wrong for the teacher and the kids come up with a way to help.

Overall this story is like most of the Fancy Nancy stories that teach kids fun words and fancy ways of saying things, the illustrations are darling, the interactions between the kids and adults are great, and the lesson is educational. We are very happy to have this in our collection!

Nothing negative to add at this time.

My daughers (11, 8 and 6) enjoy this cute book! The sentences are more simple, but the words are big and challenging at times. Go with the "My First" I Can Read! books for emerging readers...the level 1 is for kids who can already read well.

Love these books

Love these little books, these are from the I Can Read Collection. My daughter is 5 yrs. old & enjoys books about princess's , tea party's, & girly things, these books are very colorful, great for her imagination, & they are not as long as some of the others. she stays interested in them, they also teach her really great morals.

We have had Fancy Nancy around our home for several years and I never tire of reading them to my children. They love trying out new words. And Fancy Nancy always has a good lesson for everyone to learn. Great books! We will keep them for years!

Can you imagine?

The humorous story line and the detailed and accurate illustrations by David Shannon are a true pleasure! Our family loves bikes and our children and grandchildren love to match the farm animals to the various styles of bikes. We volunteer reading to at risk first graders and this is our book of choice to sit side by side and share. The giggles of children as they discover pig and pig riding the tandem, horse on the racing bike, goat eating the straw bike basket, or cow on the banana seat. The surprise ending leaves everyone anticipating another story yet to come.

Great story and well read!

My daughter teaches 4th grade and is very particular about what books I can buy for my grandaughter aged 3. This book was one they borrowed from the local library and my grandaughter insisted on three readings each night for two weeks! They really like the CD as she can listen as she goes to sleep. My daughter really like the author's reading of the story on the CD, he does a fantastic job. I highly recommend this for pre-school and primary readers although my grandson aged 9 likes to read it also.

This is a terrific kids book

This is a terrific kids book. Introduces key historical figures in a fun and engaging way. I highly recommend this book and others by Lane Smith. My daughter loved this book and we have given it the children of our nieces and nephews. You won't be disappointed.

Hilariously entertaining book that introduces children to historical figures and includes additional reference info at end.

Great introduction

I thought this book would be a good way to share my love of history with my five year old daughter and I was right. She loves it! It is very funny with a few Beatles references thrown in. It's a great opportunity to teach kids the "real" story while laughing at the silliness of this book.
