Chris Raschka has a winner in SERIOUSLY, NORMAN! --- his first foray into the novel format

Norman Normann has not scored too highly on his first attempt at the entrance exam to a fancy high school. Norman's parents --- who happen to be named Orman and Norma Normann --- are appalled and frantic. Only one thing will do, and that is for them to get Norman a tutor who will help him to score better on next year's "Amalgamated Academic Independent City Schools Test." The well-meaning but rather dim-witted Normann parents can only find one tutor on short notice, a strange, beaky-nosed, sharp-eyed man by the name of Balthazar Birdsong, whom Norman's best friend, Leonard, promptly nicknames "Bald Beezer Bird Poop" behind his back.

Balthazar's views on teaching turn out to be eccentric and startling. During their first tutoring session, Balthazar tells Norman that he must explore the dictionary from A-Z, mastering one letter every two weeks. Oddly enough, whatever words Norman runs across in the dictionary seem to connect prophetically to the events in his life, such as trying to figure out if his money-obsessed father is involved in nefarious business dealings. Norman suspects him of selling bombers to mustachioed, fur-hatted men from the faraway land of Alfur, and it appears the dictionary entries may lead him to some answers.

Norman and his friends Leonard, and the twins Anna and Emma, all slowly fall under Balthazar's spell. The old tutor declares his intention to get the children to take their heads and noses out of their textbooks and back into the clouds, where they belong. Indeed, one of the activities he prescribes for Norman is for the boy to simply observe the sky each day, drawing no conclusions at all. Balthazar does little in the way of formal teaching, simply urging the kids to observe and to explore. He even encourages them to take a trip into the city by themselves to visit him in his apartment where he lives with his pets Watson and Crick, who happen to be a rat and a crow, respectively.

Balthazar's unorthodox teaching style is not without its risks, however, as Leonard learns when he falls out of a great tree that the tutor urges the children to climb. However, under Balthazar's tutelage, they find themselves slowly maturing and expanding their worldview. These lessons come in handy when Norman's father's shady business dealings get him into big trouble, and it is up to the children to put their year of lessons to good use and journey to Singapore to rescue Mr. Normann from the clutches of the evil Alfurnians.

Balthazar's teaching style appears to be lackadaisical and rather odd (bringing to mind the Karate Kid movies), but has the effect of helping the children to grow up. The novel gently pokes fun at today's frenzied parenting, when a more relaxed and even whimsical approach might yield better results in the long term. Those parents who remember their own childhoods as less orchestrated affairs as compared to the lives of modern young people will identify with the main themes here.

SERIOUSLY, NORMAN! is a fast-paced and high-spirited slice of utter and enjoyable silliness.

Good for young kids

My kids are not reading yet, but they love this book. Morris does not know how to count change, so the man at the candy store sends him to school to learn the basics. The kids think this book is funny. Not too short, not too long.

My six year old loved the story and is learning new words

This story is super cute, about a moose learning to count and read. My son really loved it. It's a nice long story and good for advanced first graders or second grade reading. My son is 6, in advanced reading (just at the beginning of the school year though), and needed a lot of help with it, but was able to sound out many words on his own. It's a book we'll keep practicing with for a couple years at least.

A Good Story

I found this on a list of books for elementary ESL students. It just didn't resonate with the students I had. To understand the story, the kids need to have a certain English knowledge and also be at the right age/ stage of development. Since these things rarely align in a second language they way they do for native speakers, I wouldn't recommend this for most ESL classrooms. Having said that, adults might really enjoy this story.

Great bedtime stories for the kiddos

Joe Hayes is my hero. He tells interesting, fun, and silly short stories for kids. His delivery is completely unique, and it's what makes him such a masterful storyteller. I love the blending of Native American, Hispanic American, and Anglo American folklore, and his inclusion of small amounts of Spanish language content are especially pronounced in this program. If you don't speak any Spanish, don't worry , be explains all the Spanish words as he goes.

I love and admire Pinkalicious! As a mom, I love that my daughter loves her! I will happily buy every book in the series if it teaches my daughter positive things about being a girl! Embracing your femininity while being a sassy little bad ass? That's pinkalicious!

We love Pinkalicious!

My daughter and I thoroughly enjoy all the Pinkalicious books we've acquired. The illustrations are very clever. The stories are just the right length for my 4-year-old daughter's attention span.

This one reminded me of my own childhood, making concoctions in the kitchen. Loved the face on her first customer.

Miss Kann knows her audience. We look forward to future adventures with Pinkalicious.

Pinkalicious Gets Real!

This Pinkalicious story purchased from Amazon turned out to be pretty darned good. I am generally not a fan of the original five of the "Pukalicious" books, so this story came as a delightful surprise. Pink-L gets the "stink eye" from her mother for coloring her brand new skating shoes with marker pens (pink of course), but in the end her mom tells her that they are "beautiful" as all modern mothers these days MUST or risk ruining her already inflated ego. Pinky, also to her surprise, is not able to easily learn to skate and suffers many falls. All in all, it is an interesting story with realistic features and, of course, a happy ending.

This is a good addition.

My granddaughter's goal is to have me own every Pinkalicious book. This is a good addition.

Great book series for girls!

We learned about Pinkalicious through my triplets Scholastic order forms at kindergarten. They're 6. Pinkalicious is the cutest book series for girls, especially the girly girls like my daughter, lol. It's relatively new and so glad they're coming out with more books in the series. They have dolls and other items to buy separetly and my daughter already has the small doll and really wants the unicorn, Goldilicious. Pinkalicious is such a sweet and kind girl so it's a nice story line for young girls and shows good friendship and fun! I hear there's a musical too, which would be neat to see. I'm hoping they'll come out with a cartoon, which would be so fun!

Blimpo kimnd of simple

I've been reading this series from the first book and have enjoyed following the charcaters through their varoius adventures but his one felt a little forced.

Son loves these books!

My step son has absolutely fallen in love with this series of books. We bought him the first couple at a book store and have been slowly building up his collection since then.

The Third Was My First

Blimpo is the name of the Third Circle of Heck. It's a place where the fat kids go. I bought my copy from a bookstore that was going out of business although I had no idea what it was. What it is is a funny, touching, educational (oh, yes) and fun book about life in general told in the context of a brother and sister who are stuck in a heckish underworld middle school after their untimely demises. (Their demise was pretty silly, but it was way back in book one so I won't spill the beans about it.)

Basye is an excellent writer, a keen observer of the human condition, and any kid would probably love reading his series about Heck. Some of the references are pretty funny if a bit obscure for kids, but it never hurts to stretch yourself a bit in your reading, does it? The Principal of Heck is Bea "Elsa" Bubb, who is all over Marlo and Milton Fauster like white on rice, pretty much in every circle she sends them to. You see, well, no, you should see by reading the book. I have, through every circle released so far. Can't wait for the next book!
