Publisher's Summary:
As a bogler's apprentice, 10-year-old Birdie has faced down plenty of monsters lurking in the chimneys, wells, and other dark places of Victorian London. She serves as bait, singing sweetly to lure the bogles out so her master, the well-seasoned Go-Devil Man Alfred Bunce, can kill them with his trusty spear. Enter the wealthy folklorist Miss Eames, who is determined to find more scientific ways of drawing out the monsters, and Birdie fears that her livelihood may be threatened by the well-meaning lady.
Meanwhile, orphans are disappearing and a bogle is suspected, but Alfred and Birdie discover something even more sinister at work. The first in a projected trilogy, this book treats readers to a lively, engaging story with an endearing protagonist at its center. Capable, forthright, and street-wise, Birdie fairly leaps off the page with pluck, intelligence, and courage. Historical details are woven in to ensure that readers are firmly ensconced in Victorian London, where bogles may be waiting to snatch unsuspecting children, but they are certainly not the only danger to be had.
The well-paced story builds to an exciting climax as each bogle encounter raises the stakes and Birdie and Alfred face a decision that will change their lives. While this particular adventure is wrapped up nicely, readers will be delighted that the stage is set for future bogling exploits.

A darker take on children's literature
This story has a lot going for it, primarily the different approach it takes to children's literature. Rather than the typical bright fantasy world filled with magic and chosen ones, this setting is a dark, bleak England filled with poverty and despair. The story centers around creatures that hide within chimneys and outhouses, waiting for unsuspecting children to wander by so they can EAT THEM ALIVE! So, yeah... it's pretty dark, as far as children's literature goes. However, I think that is the strength of this novel, and I think it might appeal to some young readers who are not interested in the typical fare they are offered. It's kind of like a "light" horror novel to get them interested in reading.
Mandy Williams Narration Sweeps you Away..
I listen to a lot of audio books while driving and love this one especially because, the narrator, Mandy Williams has a crystal clear voice, she is easy to listen to. Plus, the narrator actually acts out the characters in the story, so listening to this audio book is like listening to a Drama on Radio. Her narration sweeps you away to the time and place in the story. I look forward to listening to her other audio books. So, I have to find a longer way to work and back :-)
Love this book!
I stumbled upon this at the library looking for books for my 7 year old daughter. I read it first to see if it was appropriate and fell in love after the first line. May be a little too much for her now but I bought a copy to share with her when she is a little older. Fun read and can't wait for the next book!
No J. K. Rowling
I liked the accented speech in the book. I think the author might be trying for a book series that might possibly spur another Harry Potter phenom. The story was pretty good with several memorable characters, but no J. K. Rowling.
I think the book was the best book i have ever read. It was enjoyable and thrilling.
I chose 5 stars because the book was descriptive and it left me hanging on very chapter.
