    Publisher's Summary:
It's strictly Friends & Family as V.I. Warshawski, "the detective mystery fans have been waiting for" (Time), makes return appearances in a collection of stories that bring new meaning to "ties that bind." Decked out in her silk shirts and no-nonsense Attitude, V.I. is out to make a living - by the skin of her teeth.
In "Grace Notes," V.I. has barely finished her morning coffee when she sees an ad in the paper asking for information about her own mother, long dead. The paper leads V.I. to her newfound Italian cousin Vico, who's looking for music composed by their great-grandmother. What's the score? Clearly it's something to kill for...
"The Pietro Andromache" finds V.I.'s friend Dr. Lotty Herschel with motive and means to dispatch her professional rival and steal his priceless statue. Lotty didn't do it - but does she know who did? V.I. soon cuts to the art of the case - and it's not a pretty picture at all!
Summoned by an old high school friend to a race "At the Old Swimming Hole," V.I. ends up swimming with the sharks - the FBI and a ruthless gambling kingpin - in a pool of blood....
And it's only "Skin Deep" when a relaxing facial transformation transforms a client into a stiff. V.I.'s pal Sal needs help. Her beautician sister Evangeline is prime suspect - and V.I. has only eighteen hours to crack the case before it's headline news....
"Three-Dot Po" proves there's nothing like a dog. Especially a dog on the trail of her mistress's killer, with V.I. in tow....
In "Strung Out," love means nothing and V.I.'s quick to learn the score as her old friend's tennis-champion daughter is under suspicion for strangling her father with a racket string. And there's more, nine stories in all, in this masterful collection of short fiction starring V.I. Warshawski, "the most engaging woman in detective fiction since Dorothy Sayers's Harriet Vane" (Newsweek).

Sara Paretsky Hits it Out of the Ball Park
As usual, Sara Paretsky scores a hit. Not only does she keep the suspense at a high level, Paretsky has the ability to make complex topics understandable. V.I. Warshawsky remains a compelling character. A suspenseful and thrilling read, especially for Chicagoans and Cubs fans. But any mystery buff will respond to this latest installment in the V. I. Warshawsky series..
    Disappointed
I must admit it was my own fault, I did not realize it was a collection of short stories and not a novel. I was quite disappointed.
    Five Stars
    Wonderful compilation of short stories.

    Publisher's Summary:
An unbearably tense novel of revenge, murder, bereavement and the destructive force of passion. First published in Norwegian in 1979, it was described by the critic Nils Nordberg as 'one of the finest, most serious, most ambitious books in post-war Norwegian crime writing'.
The single-mother families of the isolated community under the shadow of the Pyderhorn, Bergen's greatest mountain, are being terrorised by a teenage gang. But teenage violence is nothing compared to what awaits detective Varg Veum when he gets to know the blue-eyed Wenche Andersen.

    Great Scandinavian Mystery!
I've been listening to this series since "Where Roses Never Die" was a daily deal. Since Audible has been releasing these out of order, that's how I've been listening to them. Starting with ones set in the late nineties/early aughts, and moving to this one written in 1977 was very interesting. Still, the characters and plot were just as compelling as the more recent installments.
Varg Veum is a subtle character, but his light sense of humor is well portrayed. The stories are a little dark in general, though this one was less so. I wouldn't say that I was on the edge of my seat, but I certainly never lost interest. This was the second book in the series, and I think as they go on the mysteries become more complex, but I was still surprised by the ending.
In short, I would absolutely recommend this to a friend, and hope that Audible puts out more from this series soon!
    Excellent Writer
Truly a literary pleasure. I did have some trouble keeping the many characters straight in my mind, likely because the foreign names were long and unfamiliar, but aside from that, I really enjoyed the book
    Unnecessary Hyperbole
Full of unnecessary hyperbole, a weak story and ending, Varg Veum is no Harry Hole.

    Norwegian noir
Like many others I've been reading a lot of Scandinavian fiction lately, and have come to know a number of fine authors. I don't know that I'd count Staalesen among them. Whether it was him or the translation, I found the dialogue excruciating, written as if from a court transcript, with every "er" and "..." recorded; to me, that got old fast. I also thought the metaphors were strained beyond the breaking point, though I'll grant this may have been the intent, since the style and characters seemed almost an homage to Humphrey Bogart-style private detective fiction, which has been known to contort a few itself.
On the positive side, I loved the character of Varg Veum, the private detective hired by a worried mother, and liked his relationship with Karin. I enjoyed learning Veum's backstory. So I assume this is a series and I may be missing something that long-time readers would appreciate. But it was the writing itself I didn't love. Would I read more by this author? Maybe. But this isn't really my genre, the gritty P.I. drama, so I probably won't. I prefer Jo Nesbo's Harry Hole series, or Icelandic Inspector Erlendur.
The story of a missing 16-year old girl was disturbing and steeped in the uncomfortable details of underage prostitution and seedy deals beneath respectable facades. Not really a mystery as the antagonists are identified early on, but learning about them is creepy and situations are tense. Will be well loved by some.
    worth learning Norwegian
Reading Staalesen's Varg Veum novels only compares to being a teenager in the 60's and discovering Fleming's James Bond masterpieces. The bad news is I am running out of ones with English translations. It is almost worth learning Norwegian to be able to devour the rest. Staalesen approaches plot like it is a giant onion, peeling back only a single fact/clue with each chapter. Veum is a hauntingly developed character along with his "co-character", the city of Bergen Norway. I'm making myself read other books to delay finishing the partial series. Read one and you'll download the rest.
    Trafficking in Norway
The story starts out with a bang. A seventy-year-old judge is found dead of a heart attack in a hotel room, wearing women's underwear. After that, the focus switches, and things move more slowly into a lot of frustrating investigation and interviewing.
Private investigator Varg Veum has been hired to look for a sixteen-year-old girl gone missing. Torild Skagestl is from a good family, but as Veum looks into her habits and associates, he gradually uncovers her connection with a procurement service for clients who like very young teenage girls.
At first I felt I didn't know Varg Veum well enough to get caught up in his concerns. But his background does become clear after a while.

    Publisher's Summary:
Gemma Doyle, a transplanted Englishwoman, has returned to the quaint town of West London on Cape Cod to manage her great uncle Arthur's Sherlock Holmes Bookshop and Emporium. The shop - located at 222 Baker Street - specializes in the Holmes canon and pastiche and is also the home of Moriarty the cat.
When Gemma finds a rare and potentially valuable magazine containing the first Sherlock Holmes story hidden in the bookshop, she and her friend Jayne (who runs the adjoining Mrs. Hudson's Tea Room) set off to find the owner, only to stumble upon a dead body. The highly perceptive Gemma is the police's first suspect, so she puts her consummate powers of deduction to work to clear her name, investigating a handsome rare books expert, the dead woman's suspiciously unmoved son, and a whole family of greedy characters desperate to cash in on their inheritance.
But when Gemma and Jayne accidentally place themselves at a second murder scene, it's a race to uncover the truth before the detectives lock them up for good.

    Great listen
Good story, characters well developed. Excellent narration. There was no sex and no bad language. There was also no graphic violence. In other words, perfect cozy mystery. Searching now for the next book in this series,
A terrific cozy mystery regarding Sherlock Holmes
Gemma Doyle, who owns the Sherlock Holmes Book Shop and Emporium, located at 220 Baker St., West London in Massachusetts, contains the same observation skills as her detective hero in Elementary, She Read by Vicki Delany. Noticing every detail around her, Gemma spots a magazine that does not belong to the shop amid the books. Looking at it, she gets excited but alarmed to discover what looks like a first edition of the magazine that carried A Study in Scarlet, the first Sherlock Holmes book, which is the most valuable magazine in the world, with only 31 in existence. Using her deductive skills, Gemma figures out who left the magazine there and tracks the woman to a local hotel, where she and her business partner, Jane, find the woman strangled.
As the lead detective arrives on the scene, Gemma is startled to see that he is Ryan Ashburton, the man she almost married, who moved to Boston but was lured back to West London for the lead detective job. His junior detective, Louise Estrada, shows lots of suspicion toward Gemma's seemingly unreasonable knowledge of the case and wants to arrest Gemma. Thus, Gemma decides she must use her incredible deductive skills to locate the killer before she and Jane get locked up for the crime themselves.
Especially since the intense popularity of the TV series Sherlock, there has been a rekindling of interest in Sherlock Holmes, spurring the creation of many pastiches on this detective. In general, I dislike such works, as they seem to rely on the fame of the name to make themselves successful instead of creativity of writing. However, this book has turned out to be an exception to my general distrust, and I am glad to have read it.
Gemma seems to channel Holmes's genius without trying to be him. I especially enjoyed the fact that Gemma narrates the book, giving her detailed observations of everything and everyone she encounters. With the exception of a few Sherlock Holmes stories towards the very end of Conan Doyle's life, it is extremely rare to find the extraordinary detective narrate.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This is the third book by Howard Linskey with the same trio. I found it hard to get into because the character with whom the book starts is thoroughly unlikeable. Once we get into the actual mystery, the story picks up and keeps going. Reader is very good.
Another great story by the author
I throughly enjoyed this new book by Howard Linskey. What's unusual about his narratives is how easy he can weave a few storylines into one. You get a few crime mysteries unfolding at once in his books. Loved it. Narration is fantastic.

    Favorite Book of the Series!
    Any additional comments?
I loved book one in this series; I liked book two; Book three just curled my toes!
This was a really good mystery with a narrator that could do no wrong. The intersecting story lines and the cast of characters were well-written and very well-narrated. I loved that Ty and his family had a role in this story (not so much in book two.) I loved that Audrey and Sean finally get together. I. Loved. Every. Little. Thing.
I think if anything was missing it's with Audrey's Dad. In book one, he had a stroke. He still has traces of it in his speech in this book but it wasn't explained. I knew why he had the vocal oddity so I hope the narrator does not get zinged for that. Other than that, after listening to books one and two, sit back and enjoy all of the pieces coming together in this listen.
    Awesome Listen!!!
Both the author and narrator are new to me on this book. I loved all of the suspense in this book and found it to be interesting along with thrilling. This book is totally original and deals with many real life issues in a psychologically thrilling manner with some humor interspersed into it and a murder too. The narrator did a fantastic performance with the various voices she did. This book is part of a series, but I found it to be an awesome standalone listen. I was voluntarily provided with this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, narrator, and/or publisher.
    Delicious Thefts and Murder!
What made the experience of listening to This Bitter Treasure the most enjoyable?
I've listened to the previous two audio books in the Palmyrton Estate Sales series. The plot, the writing and the spoken talent of Janelle Tedesco are what keep bringing me back!
This may be "chick lit" but the developed mystery is very well done. The characters are very likeable - well written and performed. So even manly men like myself can appreciate this audiobook. Make sure you don't get cookie crumbs on the doilies! And use a coaster under the beer can. No water rings!! Lol
What did you like best about this story?
What drew me in from the first book was the occupation that Audrey has. An estate "liquidator".

    Publisher: Tantor Audio

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
The Dying Hour introduces Jason Wade, a rookie crime reporter with the Seattle Mirror, a loner who grew up in the shadow of a brewery in one of the city's blue-collar neighborhoods. At the Seattle Mirror, he is competing for the single full-time job being offered through the paper's intense intern program. But unlike the program's other young reporters, who attended big name schools and worked at other big metro dailies, Wade put himself through community college, and lacks the same experience.
Wade struggles with his haunting past as he pursues the story of Karen Harding, a college student whose car was found abandoned on a lonely stretch of highway in the Pacific Northwest. How could this beloved young woman with the altruistic nature simply vanish? Wade battles mounting odds and cut-throat competition to unearth the truth behind Karen Harding's disturbing case. Her disappearance is a story he cannot give up, never realizing the toll it could exact from him. The Dying Hour is a bone-chilling, mesmerizing tale that introduces listeners to an all-too-human young hero who journeys into the darkest regions of the human heart to confront a nightmare.
    Critic Reviews:
"The Dying Hour starts scary and ends scary. You'll be craving Mofina's next novel." (Sandra Brown, New York Times best-selling author)
    Members Reviews:
    Great Thriller
Mr. Mofina definitely has my vote for killer-diller stories. The "hero" of this one is a newspaper reporter intern desperately seeking to make his mark and thus have a permanent job at a newspaper in the Pacific northwest. The character development is first rate (as all Mofina's characters are). Jason digs and digs till he unearths a grisly serial killer. I'll say no more but if you want to be drawn-in from the beginning to a mesmerizing story: GET THIS BOOK!
Paul Costanzo was excelletn with the delivery of the story
    Storyline Captured My Squinty Eye
This is a "bone-chilling, mesmerizing tale" as described in the Publisher's Summary, which gives a good description of the overall story. This story might be for you if you like crazy ritualized killings.
Young women are being kidnapped, brutally tortured and murdered. The "blood and guts" descriptions were a little too much for my taste, and there were a couple places in the storyline that captured my "squinty eye" and a raised eyebrow. But overall, I thought the story average.
One reviewer described the narrator as "flat." At first I thought the narration was a bit odd, especially in the beginning but once I got into the story I realized the narrator's voice had a more "storytelling" quality. The voice he used for the narrative created a considered difference as opposed to the voices he used for the dialogue.
    Again and again...
...the reviews of mystery/thriller novels by Audible listener Shelley of Raleigh NC have pointed me to wonderful new authors and great series. In this case the author is Rick Mofina and the series protagonist is Jason Wade. After reading her review of this book I decided to try another Mofina novel in another series first. That novel is Be Mine and the series is Tom Reed and Walt Sydowski. It is well worth a listen.
The Dying Hour is a great dark psychological thriller.

If you like The Fixer & Shaye Archer GET THIS!!
This book begins with a young Ivy Nash living in an abusive foster home. Her foster father is a former police officer and she knows when push comes to shove, the police are going to believe him, not her.
Skip ahead a few years and she's now an investigator for child protective services.
A wealthy family takes in a 10 year old foster child and through a series of circumstances he gets blamed for the murder of their son. Ivy doesn't believe he did it. In the meanwhile she loses her job, meets a smart street kid and unravels a heartbreaking story of child abuse.
This is such a good book, I started listening and didn't stop until the book ended. The story involves child abuse, sexual abuse, drugs and everyone from the wealthy to the homeless. The story is believable. The characters are likable and the cliffhanger ending left me wanting more.
Julia Farmer does an outstanding job narrating.
    I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!
If you found this review helpful please indicate so.
    Thank You.
First in the Ivy Nash series
IN Defiance is an outstanding modern detective suspense mystery set in San Antonio, Texas. Narration is equally good.
Wonderful start of new Series !!
I love the hard-edged, no-nonsense, take-no-prisoners style that Mefford's fans have come to love from his very much twenty-first century thrillers.
As usual, you wont find any spoilers here, but Ivy Nash series book one is a tale that will grab the reader from its explosive beginning and not let them go again until the bad guys get the point.
Writing a series, especially one as varied and intense as the Ivy Nash books, is a challenge which author John W. Mefford seems to pull off with admirable aplomb, yet in this novel, he marries a truly telling tale told with Forsyths depth and understanding of event planning with all the action and excitement any fan of Andy McNab could ever wish for in their wildest dreams. This series just keeps getting better and better.
"I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review
    Awesome!!
Thank you John!! Being able to listen to this amazing story with all the amazing nuances and inflections was a god send. I picked up insights that I missed in my own reading of IN Defiance.

    About the Masons
English police procedural; female detective with female life partner. (good change of pace)
I like books set in other English speaking countries (I'm in the US), learning about the differences in customs, idioms, language, history - you name it. I will pick up a dictionary, or look at a atlas.
That said, to follow this book properly, a person who doesn't live in the British Isles (and thus isn't familiar with England's geography) would have to have a good map of England open on her lap most of the book. Also, the reader should have both ears open, and be prepared to do a lot of reading (or listening, in my case) between the lines to spot and decipher in context idioms and other specific-to-England English words.
    Otherwise, mainstream police detective story.
Except, I had not realized from the blurb that the Masons are central to the story. Books that focus of groups alleged to be "secret" are not a plus for me. The narration was ok.
Well paced and amount of detail
This was an enjoyable listen, as far as true crime can be enjoyed. The story had enough detail I could picture what was going on, but not so much I felt bogged down. As it unfolded it was pretty easy to guess what would happen, but not annoyingly so. The narrator has a pleasant voice and accent, and of course the fun foreign phrases! I would recommend this book, author, and narrator.
A Great Spinoff from Rogers' DCI Tom Caton Series
This is my once-a-year non-sci-fi review. If you like British police procedurals, and particularly if you like Manchester -- you will like this female-lead spinoff from Rogers' DCI Tom Caton Manchester series. Although this could be read on its own, it does reference back to that series:
    The Cleansing (2009)
    The Head Case (2009)
    The Tiger's Cave (2010)
    A Fatal Intervention (2010)
    Bluebell Hollow (2010)
    A Trace of Blood (2011)
    The Frozen Contract (2012)
    Backwash (2013)
    A Venetian Moon (2013)
Jo has moved from the Manchester force to the NCA -- And the good news is that there is already a second book.
Could not stand the weird narration voice
I'm afraid I could not listen to this narration. Will have to return book.

    Publisher's Summary:
Internationally acclaimed Martha Grimes once again turns her hand to crafting a story of such rich atmosphere and intricate suspense that she transports the listener to a world unlike any other. A once-fashionable, now fading resort hotel. A spinster aunt living in an attic. Dirt roads that lead to dead ends. A house full of secrets and old, dusty furnishings, uninhabited for almost half a century. A 12-year-old girl with a passion for double-chocolate ice cream sodas, and decaying lakefronts, and an obsession with the death by drowning of another young girl, 40 years before.
Like all important events in the past, there are repercussions and ramifications in the present. In the world as seen by Martha Grimes, those repercussions simmer and seethe and wind their way through hearts and souls. The ramifications can be subtle. Or exhilarating. Passionate. And they can also be deadly.
Hotel Paradise is a delicate yet excruciating view of the pettiness and cruelty of small town America. It is a look at the difficult decisions a young girl must make on her way to becoming an adult and the choices she must make between right and wrong, between love and truth, between life and death. It is a novel with extraordinary range and depth that ultimately becomes a thrilling morality play.

    Took a while, but ...
Enjoyed the book after I got into it. Emma is a busy young girl solving mysteries and very determined at that! She doesn't give up, even though people think she's wasting her time. The narration was good and kept me interested. Recommended!
    Top notch!
Completely engaging. I loved it, and am eager to listen to each volume in the series!
