    Good, but not very exciting
If you have enjoyed the Deryni books before this trilogy you may find the backfill story of what happened before Kelson became king interesting. It is as well written as you would expect. However, there really isn't a lot of interesting action in the entire trilogy. How could there be when we already know most of the fates of the important characters? This isn't bad, or even boring, so much as it isn't particularly exciting. I did enjoy watching Kurtz manipulate things so as to get all the characters into position for the point at which she originally began the story.
She does do a good job of providing a gloss on life in the 12th century or so, not leaving out the bad parts while not overly concentrating on them either. That era was not a comfortable time. Here descriptions, brief though they are, of the difficulties of living in the winter were very good.
The entire trilogy [now that I have read it] is really more the middle book of a big trilogy like Lord of the Rings. Not much seems to happen, byt that's because things are being set up for the rest of the story. If you can accept that, you'll almost certainly like this trilogy.
    If you like the series
If you like the series, you'll like this book. Somehow we grow to love the lead character and that is a not-so-subtle testament to the character clues and detailed writing that Katherine Kurtz is known for. In my opinion, the Deryni histories should be read as a whole lest we miss some key part of the story, which, after all is the reason we read them.
and great adventure can all be found in this book
Secret Societies, Arcane Magic, Rites Apocrypha, Court Intrigue, Heroic Acts of Loyal Bravery, Sacrifice, Mourning, Bravery, Cowardice, Betrayal, Jealousy, Hopes, Dreams, Visions, Romance, Courtly Tradition, Telepathy, Suspense, War, Blade work, Fencing, Duels, Knighting, Assassins, Justice of the King, and great adventure can all be found in this book. Dare to go on a grand adventure, and read this book.
    Great story
Great story by a great storyteller!

    Gripping
I have enjoyed book 1 of the trilogy. Kate Wildes life takes a bizarre and unexpected turn during a camping trip with her sister and her best friend. A new world, new rules and an old acquaintance she's never met begin a mind boggling journey into destiny.
    ugh
The narrator had a very bland voice. It wasn't exactly unpleasant but there was no infliction just one monotone cadence that really started to bore me. Mix in the fact that story was pretty boring and all over the place and you get 1 star ratings across the board.
not enough grit - super soft romance
    Any additional comments?
So glad I borrowed this with Amazon Kindle.
This isnt the softest book Ive read with so little grit its like wet plastic. But its right up there.
The idea of the story is very interesting. Its something like Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld, a comic that I read when I was very little. I love the idea of the MC being from another world and finding the way home after years of living in ours. In fact, I tried to write a short story with the same idea a while back. Even my story, for which I had such high hopes, fell flat and is rotting somewhere in a journal, unfinished and truly unmourned.
Krystal Wade, I think, did a pretty good job of presenting the precepts of a girl being the savior of another world. However, the world itself loses focus about halfway through and were subject to the inner workings of a teenager fluctuating between feeling sorry for herself and desiring the literal man of her dreams.
If you like romance to the exception of all else but a basic storyline, this is the book for you. It really just isnt my cup of tea.
Everything is subjective, nothing more so than art. So there will be plenty of people who looooove this story. Unfortunately, Im just not one of them, not matter how much I wish to be.
This is the first time Ive listened to narrator, Eileen Stevens, while Im not blown away by her talents, she is a splendid match to the softness of Wildes Fire. Her voice is smooth and sweet, just like the conflicted Katriona Wilde.

    Publisher's Summary:
Eighteen-year-old companion trainee Ciardis Weathervane has won the friendship of the royal heir and saved his claim to the throne. Yet her interference in the inheritance rights leaves more harm done than good. The Ameles Forest lies unprotected and it's inhabitants are dying.
As humans begin to die in gruesome deaths, the Emperor dispatches the royal heir to the forests with the solution to the kith concerns.
With enemies closing ranks in Sandrin, Ciardis can little afford to leave the city's nest of vipers to take on a new task. But she's given no choice when her loyalty to the crown and courts are called into question.
To keep the Companions' Guild happy and the favor of the Imperial Court, Ciardis will be tested in frightening new ways, especially when she's faced with an obstacle that could risk the lives of her friends and the family she never thought she had.
This second novel continues the story of Ciardis Weathervane from Sworn To Raise.
    Members Reviews:
    Great follow-up book
This book picks up a few months after the events of the first book. And in the mean time it seems that Ciardis has managed to get herself into more trouble. That seems to be theme of the story in this book. No matter what she's doing, whether trying to help, or trying to discover more about herself, what she accomplishes is nothing short of disaster for herself and those around her. It's actually quite comical.
I like this story for the reason that I liked the first one, it has a fast pace with a lot of different things happening but still the story moves forward without getting bogged down in details. The author gives you just enough information to keep you following along.
One complaint, I feel like at this point I should know more about Sebastian. Ciardis and Sebastian can mind speak and seem to be keeping in touch, yet we know hardly anything about him at this point. I'm hoping the next book will give us more from his perspective.
I would recommend this book and the first one to people looking for a fast read with lots of magic and intrigue.
    On the Fav List
So I bought this after reading the first for free on my kindle and was shocked at how consistent the quality and intrigue continued to be. The first is usually the best but it's like the first never ended and is just getting better and better. Rich with the world it started to create in the first book, Sworn to Transfer dives right back in with a few new twist in our young heroine's life. I do love that this book is different from many of the others today in the fact that it focuses on the heroine and not so much her 'love' interest. Yes they are the point of her daily life but she seems to take a deliberate step away to create her own story. A must read. Now onto the next, so glad amazon suggested this to me.
    Surprisingly intriguing and compelling work
When I started book #1 in this series I had no expectations beyond curiosity. I quickly got hooked by the fairly original and compelling narrative. Book #2 kept me just as interested, and the cliff hanger ending made a good teaser for book #3 (which I haven't yet read). There are some editing issues with the Kindle edition that suggested a good proofreading was needed, but this was not enough to dampen my interest or obscure the story. I found no obvious instances of behavior that was inconsistent (a pet peeve of mine).

    Members Reviews:
    Prequel to "The Elfin Ship"
"The Stone Giant" turns James Blaylock's other stories about the notorious rogue Theophile Escargot and the nefarious wizard Selznak (aka Sikorsky, aka Abner Helstrom) into a trilogy. In the process some earlier information gets reinvented, and explanations are provided for things that really didn't need much explanation. It's a bit of pleasant nonsense set in a vaguely steampunk fantasy world.
Theophile, a lazy rogue, loses his wife and family after stealing his own pie. Infatuated with a sympathetic barmaid he becomes a small part of the giant plot of the fiendish balding dwarf, uncle Abner. A series of absurd misadventures follows as Escargot stumbles through the machinations of evil innkeepers, murderous merrymakers, pompous pirates, eccentric elves, and other assorted oddities.
The tale is fun and whimsical, but there are some striking moments of insight that raise the book over mere fantasy. As always, Blaylock's amazing prose illuminates the story with a true sense of wonder. Anyone enjoying this prequel should be sure to read the author's two previous fantasies, "The Elfin Ship" and "The Disappearing Dwarf."
    Early Blaylock Hits The Spot
This early James Blaylock novel introduces the world of Theophile Escargot, Twombly Town and the evil dwarf, Abner Helstrom, all of whom then show up later in Blaylock's The Elfin Ship and The Disappearing Dwarf. Escargot chases off after a beautiful serving girl he barely knows, but when she is threatened by the evil dwarf Escargot manages to steal a magic submarine and the race is on. The dwarf's intention to use her as a sacrifice to arouse sleeping giants for his evil purposes. In his effort to save her Escargot falls in with an a group of elves in a flying three masted galleon and about 10,000 little men who are 2 inches tall. It all comes to a G. Smithers' style conclusion. (You'll find out who G. Smithers is when you read the book.) Like other Blaylock fantasy it is full of elves, goblins and mystery and stars an unlikely hero. A very good read for everyone and for Blaylock fans it's an absolute must.
    Fantasy books
James P. Blaylocks' Twombly Town books are for younger readers so when I want to think back to my younger days I read these three books.

    Members Reviews:
    Don't be fooled
To be frank, if it wasn't for the fact that there's a 5 year gap from the assassination to when Ronan makes his play I might have enjoyed this book. But 5 years! The story doesn't make sense with that and it rubbed me raw the entire book.
It's also just too much. It's a two book story smashed into 1 book. All the pieces are there and I couldn't put the book down at times, but at the end of the day it wasn't the worlds best story. It was also very predictable and a less than satisfying end.
Is it worth a credit, yes. But don't pay any more for this.
    Narrations was excellent.
    Good first book. Excellent Narrating
What did you love best about Shard Knight?
I enjoyed the fight scenes. I was, for the most part, able to have a movie of the action running in my head. The writer paints vivid pictures with words.
Would you recommend Shard Knight to your friends? Why or why not?
Yes, It is a beautifully told story.
Matthew Ballard has created a wonderful world and a wonderful story. It is also a story that will carry through future books. The characters are the sort you felt like you could get to know.
My issue with the book is that he rushed through some areas that could have used a little more time. Also there were jarring Time/Plot hops. At first I honestly thought there was something technically wrong with the download. This is what I mean when I say he needs to spend a little more time. Transitions are abrupt and rough. I see this as something that can be fixed. He also needs to work on the dialogue transitions. "He said, She said" are great tools but there are others as well. A little diversity will help a lot.
I will buy more books by this author. I truly enjoyed the story and the world created and I look forward to future adventures.
What about Greg Tremblays performance did you like?
I enjoyed his voices and accents the most. They carried me away and I was able to forget about the narrator. He helped wrap the listener into the story. There have been narrators who's voices to not mix well with the story. I end up thinking more about the person talking at me than the story. Being able to forget about the narrator as a person and have them be a storyteller is important to me.
The narrator, Greg Tremblay, has become one of my Top 5 Narrators on Audible. He brought the book to life. I was able to forget that the narrator was male. He became gender-less.

A thrilling, inventive follow-up to The Desert of Souls by Howard Andrew Jones, a "rare master of the storytellers art" (Greenmanreview.com)
As a snowfall blankets 8th century Mosul, a Persian noblewoman arrives at the home of the scholar Dabir and his friend the swordsman Captain Asim. Najya has escaped from a dangerous cabal that has ensorcelled her to track down ancient magical tools of tremendous power, the bones of the old ones.
To stop the cabal and save Najya, Dabir and Asim venture into the worst winter in human memory, hunted by a shape-changing assassin. The stalwart Asim is drawn irresistibly toward the beautiful Persian even as Dabir realizes she may be far more dangerous a threat than anyone who pursues them, for her enchantment worsens with the winter. As their opposition grows, Dabir and Asim have no choice but to ally with their deadliest enemy, the treacherous Greek necromancer, Lydia. But even if they can trust one another long enough to escape their foes, it may be too late for Najya, whose soul is bound up with a vengeful spirit intent on sheathing the world in ice for a thousand years...
    Members Reviews:
Book 2 of the Desert of Souls continues the adventure
The Bones of the Old Ones continues the story of Dabir and Asim, a scholar/warrior team who fight monsters in medieval Baghdad. As with the first book, this is rousing sword and sorcery, and Jones weaves in fantastic historical detail. Fight scenes are his strength, and it's a fun read. The writing is sometimes clunky, and the female characters never quite ring true. Lydia, the bad girl sorceress of the tale, sounds too much at times like a modern woman with a chip on her shoulder, rather than a dramatic adversary. Asim's love interest spends too much time channeling her inner ice demon to become a real flesh and blood character. The book was nonetheless one I didn't want to put down, with good pacing and well, great sword fights. Long on monsters and battles and with nothing but a chaste kiss or two, the novel would be fine for teenage readers as well.
I truly enjoyed "A Desert of Souls"
I truly enjoyed "A Desert of Souls", and was not disappointed by this book either. Jones' writing is clear and engaging, and I felt like I was part of the Middle East in the 8th or 9th Century. Just enough fantastical elements to make it interesting, without making me think "Oh, that couldn't have happened!" I really hope Jones writes more stories about the two main characters, I would love to read them!
    Fun Sword and Sorcery Novel
I really enjoyed Bones of the Old Ones. It is a fast paced Arabian Nights style fantasy that kept me entertained from start to finish. Ice Monsters, evil wizards, diabolical spirits, wooden soldiers, shape shifters and flying carpets; this book takes all of these and wraps them up in a page turning adventure.
Unlike much current fantasy which trends towards the grim and gritty, the protagonists of this novel are actually heroic. Occasionally it's nice to read a good old fashioned good verses evil tale with heroes who are actually heroic.
Though it is only two books in, this has quickly become one of my favorite series and I eagerly await the next novel.
    Vorpal Sword and Sorcery +5
It's not fair for sword(/scimitar)-and-sorcery to be this well-written.

Great Story, but OMG the reader
What did you like best about A Thirst for Vengeance? What did you like least?
I like the story I really do, but I can't finish it...
How could the performance have been better?
A different reader. Any other reader. A computer generated voice even. I just couldn't take it
    Pleasantly Surprised
    Any additional comments?
I have to admit that I was expecting this to be pretty bad going in. But this book pleasantly surprised me, it was actually a decently written entertaining story. While not the best thing I've ever read in the Genre, it is a good debut novel, and I think any fan of fantasy will find it a fun read. And it only cost me $2, so it was worst the price without a doubt.
I give it about 3.5 stars.
    I don't get you people!
Where does A Thirst for Vengeance rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Top 25 out of several thousand.
What was one of the most memorable moments of A Thirst for Vengeance?
The educational moments of the protagonist.
What does David Williams bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
    Dramatic baratone voice.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
    The whole story was intriguing.
    Any additional comments?
I am constantly complaining of the choices audible makes when new releases come out. A lot of times, it becomes obvious my taste differs from the average reader/listener. I typically agree with the obvious stuff,( i.e."song of ice and fire"), etc. Then, there are book ratings I don't get at all,(i.e." Lies of Locke Lamora"). This book is not reflected fairly in the ratings it has recieved. It should be a solid 4 stars on anyone's rank. I chose 5 stars for the hidden gem aspect. With all that said, check my ratings and see if you agree with most of my choices and grab this title.
Good story, not so good narration
The story itself is pretty good. I will definitely continue the series.
The main issue I had was with the reader. For the two main characters. he chose a way of speaking that made it sound like they were making profound declarations with every sentence. every word. Everything was drawn out and over emphasized. And at times the sentences ran together. as if the reader were trying to get through them quickly by ignoring punctuation.
For all of the other characters, the reader's choice of voice and prose was fine.

    Critic Reviews:
"The second book in Holland's The Gods Dream Trilogy lives up to the excellent first volume in the trilogy. A captured prince tortured by an evil god finds his soul mate in an Earth woman badly wounded in body and spirit." (Jacqueline Diamond)
"Debra Holland has created...a world complete with complex cultures; language; petty, warring Gods; and characters that are compelling and sometimes endearing or frightening." (N. Peterson)

    A Must Read Sequel
I enjoyed Reaper of Dreams as much if not more than the first book, Sower of Dreams. Reaper continues the story of the world of Princess Daria, expanding into additional lands, people and cultures, while solving some of the mysteries left open from the first book, so you won't want to miss it. With the expanded character sets, comes more interactions, clever twists with intense and suspenseful action. The characters advance at a good pace and their skills, compassion and strengths are put to full use. Its also about moving forward from a past filled with hardship.
The audible version especially brings this all to life with a great narrator. I can take my long walks and do chores while immersed in a mystical land and intriguing story.
    Complicated, outstanding listen
    Any additional comments?
This is the series of The Gods Dream Trilogy which was just as outstanding as the first book in this series. This is a complicated read with many twists and turns as Ms. Holland takes you to another world where everything is different. She gives you a well told story with many wonderful characters where god's have over thrown each other taking control of human minds to get energy. The bad god feels he should have all the people worshiping him as he has helped the good gods people more. This is a story of taking back you life when it was in a happier time. People helping people to a common goal and bring back a kingdom.
The author almost brings tears to your eyes as she brings back together a sister and her brother she thought was dead. That was the most touching part of the whole read. This is a story of overcoming your past growing as a person and finding love for so many. Putting a kingdom right and bring the god's back to protect their people.
Noah Michael Levine bring life to this story with his great voice and his even tones. He has a smooth voice that pulls you in. It paints the picture of a place with such color that it almost feels real. You have no trouble knowing if the character is male or female, his emotions fit what the characters are going through. There are no background noise and you can't tell if he takes any breaks. This is just one lovely narration that gives you a wonderful compelling listen.
Ms. Holland always brings a wonderful tale and plot to her story. She has a way of pulling you in and letting the book take you over. This is really a very touching and heartwarming read as the characters take control and start over finding love and building a new life. I love this author's books she is a must have author.
