  • Ditch The Small Talk - EP 23 - Mental Health at Work with Louise Chunn
Hello and welcome to episode 23 of Ditch The Small Talk. My name is Denean and this is a weekly podcast, where I speak to people about mental health.
So. It's been a couple of weeks since I've released an episode but I'm glad to be back and better for the rest. For those asking, the trip went really well. So well in fact that I wasn't intially happy about heading back home - which is the sign of a good holiday, I think.
I'm so excited for you to listen to my chat with the founder of welldoing.org - Louise Chunn.
We covered mental health at work and whether companies are actually taking it seriously and how things such as imposter syndrome and not being able to switch off from work can also affect your mental health.

  • Ditch The Small Talk - EP 22.5 - Anxiety and travelling
Welcome to episode 22.5 of Ditch The Small Talk. My name is Denean and this is a weekly podcast, where I speak to people about their mental health.
So in this week's minisode, I want to talk about travelling and anxiety.
So. As it happens, I enjoy travelling. I enjoy learning about the history and culture of new places, new food and just the feeling of being somewhere different. I always feel better when I learn more about the history of a place and I like feeling like I'm less ignorant about the world. And yet, I still suffer from an anxiety flare up before I travel...

  • Ditch The Small Talk - EP 22 - Urban developments and Mental Health
Hello and welcome to episode 22 of Ditch The Small Talk. My name is Denean and this is a weekly podcast, where I speak to people about their mental health.
So, you probably don't know this but I've got a strong interest in urban development. I spend a lot of time thinking about the design of buildings and how they cater to communities. I live near a few estates which were designed with buildings on four sides, about seven floors up facing one big courtside and I cannot help but think about how it would feel to live somewhere that's designed that way. Would it feel like I was enclosed in a community or trapped? Is this a design that's meant to build cohesiom way before the residents were ready it. Who knows? Anyway, my guest and I discuss this in this episode, so without further ado..... Here's Madeleine...

  • Ditch The Small Talk - EP 21.5 - When to switch off from social media
In this week's minisode, I talk about when you might need to take a break from social media and why I'm alright about not taking the month of August off.
Here are a few articles that I read through and helped me to think about this subject:
Young people’s mental health damaged by ‘unobtainable’ body image in online world - The Guardian
School work and social media blamed for rise to 13,500 patients from 7,300 in 1997

  • Ditch The Small Talk - EP 21 - Marverine Cole
Hello and welcome to episode 21 of Ditch The Small Talk. My name is Denean and this is a weekly podcast, where I speak to people about their mental health.
So. How has your week been? In the spirit of being honest, it has been a pretty tough couple of weeks. I've been feeling down for no reason, worried about almost everything and getting those feelings of dread again but I've also had some great times. I took a week off work recently (here's a tip: don't go four months without taking time off work) and I had a great week. I caught up with up my friends and family, made no all day plans, and I spoke to my guest this week.
Now, one of the reasons why I started this podcast was because I wanted to see and hear more women of colour talking about their mental health and have conversations. So I'm really happy to introduce this conversation with this week's guest: Marverine Cole. Marverine is a news reader, radio producer and the host of a BBC Radio 4 documentary called Black Girls Don't Cry, where she speaks to many black women about their experiences with suffering from mental health issues as well as her own experiences and the effects of the media. I hope that you enjoy it. Don't forget to rate and subscribe!

  • Ditch The Small Talk - EP 20.5 - It has to be all of us, or it will never happen
    Hello,
This week's minisode is a quick talk about mental health awareness and how far it goes beyond people who feel a bit down, or sad one day, to anxiety and depression to obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) to schizophrenia and maybe other mental health illnesses/disorders.
We all to open up the conversation to everyone!

  • Ditch The Small Talk - EP 20 - William Pullen
Hello and welcome to episode 20 of Ditch The Small Talk. My name is Denean and this is a weekly podcast, where I speak to people about their mental health.
Well! This week has been an absolute scorcher. I don't know about you but I'm done with this unbearable weather. Summer is great because of the long days and the vibe in London. There's nothing like it. Especially with the football being on and England doing surprisingly well. BUT, this heat is a nightmare for my hair, transport options (the tube really puts my deodorant to the test) and just my overall comfort.
Am I the only one that loves Spring and Autumn the best? Those seasons are my favourite, I feel that I'm always on the cusp of something good. When Autumn comes around, I know that we're closer to Christmas (which means some rest from work and downtime with family and friends). Tbough I know that's not true for everyone. And Spring! Oh Spring! The cherry blossoms in London, the days beginning to get longer and BBQS!!!!!
But I can't complain. Yesterday, I was lucky enough to March with the historical palaces group as part of the London Pride parade. Luckily, I managed to find some shade to hide under, so my worries about collapsing were assuaged and it was fantastic to see so many people happy and excited to celebrate the LGBTQIA community and I feel honoured to be a part of it.
Talking of getting out of the house, my guest this week is William Pullen. William is a psychotherapist, who a few years ago, changed his life and now specialises in something called Dynamic Running Therapy, which combines mindfulness, running and talk therapy. He also has a book called "Running with Mindfulness" (I'll add the link in the bio). We spoke about how he got into practising as a psychotherapist and he became a specialist in dynamic running therapy, how keeping active is important to him and what he would like to see change about the way we treat mental health in the next few years.

About Ditch The Small Talk

From the publisher's feed

Hello there. My name is Denean Rowe and for as long as I can remember, I've had a voice in the back of my head that has told me that I won't achieve anything, that I shouldn't talk about my problems and that I'm the only one that has this voice. Years later, I realised that this was part of my anxiety and that I was sick of keeping it to myself, so here is where this podcast comes in! Ditch The Small Talk is a weekly podcast where I have conversations with people about mental health. Whether it's how they discovered that something wasn't quite right, what type of treatments have worked for them or how they think society needs to change the way we view mental health. I want to talk about it all. And I would love it if you listened.
