Today, my Pastor, Scott Daniels, is on the podcast. Scott is one of the most well-respected theologians in our denomination (and beyond) globally. He is also a beloved college professor, a deeply invested pastoral leader, and a mega sports enthusiast. I am so grateful for Pastor Scott’s investment in my life and ministry… As a young leader, trying to figure out what it looks like to be obedient to God’s call on my life, it has been amazing to have mentors, like Scott, as examples in my life, but also voices of encouragement.
As you will hear, Scott has served in a variety of leadership roles. Leadership can bring pressure, loneliness, and discouragement from critics… but those themes don’t have to be the dominant narratives. Today, Pastor Scott shares with us about his journey… and how he has stayed rooted in the knowledge of God’s love and God’s best for him — which has allowed him not to cave to the unhealthy pressures of leadership.
Dr. Scott Daniels is senior pastor at Nampa College Church of the Nazarene and Pastoral Scholar in Residence at Northwest Nazarene University. Scott has also pastored in Pasadena, California and Richardson, Texas and served as the dean of School of Theology at Azusa Pacific University and Seminary. He is a frequent guest speaker and lecturer at churches, camp meetings, and college campuses. He received his MDiv and PhD in theology and ethics from Fuller Theological Seminary. I know I talk about rest all of the time on the podcast, so I decided to practice what I preach by stepping away from excessive technology use for a whole month!

Have you ever chased after an idea, goal, or title, only to realize that it isn’t what you really want?
Brooklyn Lindsey is back this week to remind us to step back and assess our desires. Once we peel back the layers, and understand what we are passionate about, we can take steps to align what we want with what we do. The powerful reminder in all of this is that we can’t do it alone. We need a crash (which is a what a group of rhinos is called) to help us move past what seems immovable. We need people in our corner who lovingly, but firmly, remind us purpose and calling when we get turned upside down.

June 21, 2022 Episode 19: The Rollercoaster of Infertility & Relinquishing Control | Chats with Carly
Several years ago, we struggled with secondary infertility. It was one of the most challenging seasons of our lives that was a rollercoaster of emotions. Some of you may have ridden this same lonely, tear-filled ride as well. In the midst of my frustration and disappointment, God walked with me so closely. I slowly but surely learned to relinquish control and in doing so, I learned that God's goodness is not tied to a specific outcome or circumstance.
You may not have experienced infertility, but I would guess that you have gone through seasons where things just didn't turn out in the way that you had hoped. For us recovering perfectionists who love to plan, this can be extremely difficult. So, I hope that this episode will peel back some layers and help you sit in God's goodness when you can't walk forward in the direction you planned. When we sit in God's goodness and let it seep into our hearts, we will realize that we are part of a story that is bigger than us.

My favorite person on planet earth is here on the podcast today—my husband, Mike! Not only is Mike an amazing husband and Dad, but he is an accomplished graphic designer and artist. Mike worked for Carhartt for several years, has designed for hundreds of freelance clients, and for the last eight years, he has taught graphic design and digital media as a university professor.
So much of the life of a designer centers around receiving feedback and constructive criticism… which may seem like a perfectionist’s nightmare! However, Mike sees the good in it, and has learned not to let his value be rocked by other people’s opinions.
Mike’s identity is rooted securely in the love of God and not in his performance. When Mike was in high school, he was in a terrible boating accident. As a top-tier high school athlete, this accident not caused severe pain physically, but it also changed the trajectory of his future aspirations. Instead of giving into bitterness, Mike allowed for God to shape his heart and dreams in new, profound ways.

She also shares about what practices have helped her as she has taken steps to follow God — even in the unknown.
