Finally got around to recording the latest in my 138 BPM Trance demo series last Saturday afternoon, a beautiful sunny day in Seattle that I should probably have been outside doing something healthy rather than hanging out in my poorly lit studio blowing my eardrums out, but oh well, hopefully you will think it was worth it! I decided to just call this one by the month rather than try to think of a more clever name for it, although one observation I would call out is this is a good example of the folly of creating the “album art” before the mix, because as is turns out this one ended up a little heavier on the edgy and dark side than what I consider to be the typical "sound" I go for, so the lovely pastel sunset is perhaps a bit misleading haha (at least for the first part).. This one has some more clubby and Psy-Trance elements in the first half, but the usual "Gotek-esque" euphoric and melodic sounds are all still there, it just makes you work a little harder to get to them per se.. Also, rather than just bang it out at 138 to 140 there is a slightly slower build on this one, kicking off at 134-136 for the first 4 tracks then the rest is at 138 with the final 2 ramping up to 140, so the common denominator is 138, and thusly I don’t feel too guilty calling it a “138 BPM Trance demo”! :P I hope you enjoy the mix, and as usual, THANK YOU for your support. On Saturday, March 26th, 2016, I was honored to be invited down to be a guest DJ for a popular recurring Trance/Progressive DJ show in Portland, OR, at Whiskey Bar called HAPPY SATURDAYS, organized and promoted by my good buddy out of Seattle, Eric Weber a.k.a. DJ WEB. This show is usually local NW DJ's but occasionally has well-known headliners; this time was kind of a special night because it was all local DJ friends and peers and fellow Trance addicts, WEB, ZOXY, BEEFER, CHANNEL SURFER, JEFF KAISER, and me, GOTEK, and nearly all B2B sets (multiple DJ’s spinning on one set). I was honored to be paired up with my good friend and well-known Portland Trance DJ & Promoter, DJ Zoxy, and we had a monster 90+ minute, 21-track set. This is actually half of that set, just the tracks I played that night, which was recorded live as a rehearsal for the show the night before. I may at some future point try to re-record this set including Zoxy’s tracks, but he played a lot of demos and unreleased stuff that night so for the sake of timing I figured I would upload this practice dry-run set to bring back memories of an amazing night of a lot of laughs, tons of smiling faces in the crowd, great people and friends, and the best music on the planet. Speaking of, was SO happy to feature two brand new tracks from two Seattle producers destined for the big-time, JALLEN and EMERGE, incredible, incredible talent.... On Friday, March 4th, I got around to recording this demo Trance set that I had been thinking about for a while. As it sometimes happens, I arranged some of my favorite tracks and intended to do a practice run, but hit the record button on my M-Audio MicroTrack II “just in case” and this is what turned out, so I kept it. I intended to make this a very airy, melodic, euphoric, classic-sounding 138 BPM mix with an assortment of spine-tingly tracks that can make you start thinking about the warmer weather and blue skies ahead, so I called in “Springbreeze” for lack of anything better to call it, yes, pretty cliché sounding Trancer title, I know haha.. This mix was actually inspired by the first track, which is by now more of a classic Thrillseekers vocal track that I loved back in the day, but I had never heard this particular remix before a month ago or so, taking the bus home from work, heard it on Internet radio and could barely keep myself from jumping up and down on the bus and making a complete ass out of myself haha – that acoustic guitar breakdown send chills down my spine!! On Friday, Feb 12th, 2016, it was a distinct honor and privilege to be invited as an opener for one of my all-time Trance Idols, world-renown German Trance record-producer and DJ, ALEX M.O.R.P.H., at Box House (formerly Last Supper Club). I was also joined by fellow Seattle DJ’s Invincity, as well as Marc Pospisil, a.k.a. MarQ, well-known NW Trance DJ/Producer as well as the promoter of this show and champion behind the Seattle Trance Alliance, a new movement of Trance fans supporting the awareness and promotion Trance in the NW. Anyway, this was the 2nd time I have been lucky enough to open for Alex M.O.R.P.H. in my life after being such a big fan for so many years, and just like the first time, this show was packed with his fans and Alex was such a warm, funny, and humble guy to work with, consummate professional, and delivered a night of the most incredible Trance, such great energy and sense of Trance Family that night, the crowd was a giant love fest of friends and Trance enthusiasts, truly one of those magical eves I will never forget!! I really loved every track on my short 45 minute spot warming up the decks, tried to make sure every track counted and was filled with exquisite emotion and euphoria that I try so hard to build my brand around. On January 16, 2016, I had the extreme honor and privilege to be on the opening DJ crew for a true legendary and pioneering force in the Trance World, the founders of the world-famous “Future Sound of Egypt”, ALY & FILA, as headliners for the Foundation Nightclub 3-Year Anniversary party. Yet another one of those dream-come-true scenarios of opening for one of my all-time idol DJ/Producers, sort of surreal after so many years of listening to these guys as a huge fan. On top of that, the two other openers for the show were good DJ buddies and Seattle Trance Celebs, Johnny Monsoon and Randall Glenn, so the night was extra fun and memorable. This was my 2nd B2B set with Randall Glenn at Foundation (first one was for Andy Moor back in Dec of 2013, and is one of my most-played podcasts ever) and I always know that the set will turn out awesome when spinning with Randall, he definitely adds a huge banger vocal element to my traditionally "mostly" non-vocal sets, so I think the two of us play off of each other nicely and make some great crowd-pleaser mixes together. SO many brand new, incredible, amazing tracks in this one, including an unreleased demo, Apollo 8, kindly sent to me from my gifted producer buddy in Serbia, Odej Haj a.k.a. Odison, and also spun another one of my current faves, "Chase Your Dreams", a truly heavenly tune by the talented Ricardo Ban out of Ireland!!! It was an incredible night, epic SOLD-OUT show, amazing crowd of friends and Trance Families of Seattle and Portland coming together to welcome in Fadi Wassef Naquib (FILA) all the way from Egypt, and a truly magical eve that I will never forget. First show of the New Year!!! On Saturday, January 2nd, 2016, I was honored to be invited down to Portland, OR, to spin a set for a very special "138 BPM" edition of the recurring MISSION TRANCE show, which is put on monthly by my dear friend and fellow DJ/promoter, ZOXY. This is always a super fun show to play at with a great line-up of local resident DJ's and is frequented by the greatest group of loyal Portland Trance fans and friends, so there is always great energy at the club and lots of smiling faces in the crowd. Anyway, it's not very often that I get to play 138 BPM Trance, which is really at the core of my being and what originally got me addicted to the whole underground Euro electronic music scene in the first place back in the 90's, so I tried to pick a line-up of brand new tracks mixed with an assortment of precious vintage tracks that I have always wanted to spin live, including rare gems like "Aura Indigo" by Mirco de Govia, "The Sun" by Scott Mac & Drax, and kicked it of with one of my ALLLLLL-TIME-FAVE classic breaks vocal tracks, "Faith" by Starecase, sped up to 138, her voice hits a tone that just drives me wild haha...and I think what I ended up with was a pretty special hour spent!!! On Saturday, November 28, 2015, the November edition of Mission Trance show hit the stage at Whiskey Bar in Portland, OR, and it was a very special Thanksgiving Holiday and double-birthday DJ event called "TRANCEGIVING". I have been lucky enough to have been a fairly consistent member of this show for the past several years, and was honored to make the trip down from Seattle for this one in particular. All I can say is this was just one of those rare nights where all the stars aligned, the positive energy at the club, the special music every DJ played, the crowd that night was so incredible and there was so much TRANCE LOVE and Holiday HAPPINESS in the air, plus it was my birthday weekend along with the founder of the show, DJ Zoxy, on the exact same date as me (Nov 26), truly a stellar, EPIC EVE!!!!! I had so many awesome friends in town for Thanksgiving who came out to the show, plus getting to share the decks with such NW electronic dance music DJ celebs such as Jamie Meushaw, Eddie Pitzul, and DJ Zoxy himself, I can’t imagine a more perfect night. This set was packed with tracks I love, mostly just released, but also spiced up with a few of my faves discovered over the course of 2015, plus this set was 100% recorded LIVE by the club, just added Voice ID tags, that’s it. Brand new!! Just sort of randomly decided to record this more mellow and melodic Progressive House demo mix last weekend, on Saturday, October 10th. I have been collecting a lot of really great, more down-tempo Progressive tracks for the past few months, and the bare bones of this mix just happened to be what I have been practicing with on my gear lately, which gave me this kind of melancholy, happy/sad feeling that I associate with Fall, my favorite time of year; the downward slide at the tail end of the Summer months, when the days start getting shorter and colder, the leaves in the NW start changing into the most brilliant colors and then fall from the trees, and we approach the holidays and the cold of Winter. Anyway, really liked the way this one turned out, a little kick here and there, but overall very euphoric, soothing, and dreamy.. I entitled it “Sunday”. I hope that you enjoy! -Mark
