138 BPM Trance, before it was even referred to as “Uplifting Trance”, is what I originally fell in love with back in the late 90’s and what eventually inspired me to buy some turn tables and learn how to DJ, which began this whole thing for me. Even though I mostly only am able to DJ Progressive House and/or Progressive Trance (sub-130 BPM Trance) when I play out in clubs, Uplifting Trance will always be my original love and passion for this music, and it was the spring well that led to all of these other genres in the decades that followed. To me, nothing can ever quite make you feel that weightless feeling of those massive, dizzying Uplifting Trance break downs, euphoric builds, and spine-tingly crescendos.. Anyway, I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for the Uplifting stuff, and will always continuously buy a few here and there when I hear something special, collecting them as the months go by. Occasionally when the mood strikes, (and more often then not there "might" be a few cocktails involved haha) I’ll start kicking around a set list and experiment with it on the CDJ’s, and when the stars align, I hit the “record” button on my digital recorder and see what I end up with. This is one of those, recorded on Saturday, January 21st, on a chilly, grey winter day here in Seattle, but reminiscing about my recent vacation in beautiful sunny Hawaii, and some of the tracks I was listening to while I was there….always remembering that no matter how grey and dismal things get around here, there is a magical paradise somewhere out there, just waiting for us, and music can help us get there. I have also been thinking about a lot of older classics lately, so made sure to throw some golden oldies in on this one, as well as a few recent amazing remixes of classics. ~ As a side note, I heard Richard Durand’s “Save You” on a recent Trance Sanctuary podcast, and the beautiful, heartfelt lyrics of Christina Novelli reminded me of my very, very, very best friend from High School, Kent Bench, whom was and always will be my dearest friend. Kent tragically passed away a few years ago from liver disease associated with alcoholism, and it was beyond crushing to me and everyone whom loved Kent. These lyrics reminded me of that time, no matter how much I desperately wanted to save Kent, there ended up being nothing anyone could do to reverse the course of this horrible disease, and he slipped away. Anyway, sorry to be depressing, and I really hope none of you ever have to go through something like that. I dedicate this mix to my best friend, Kent. I love and miss you buddy. <3

On Friday, January 6th, I was honored to play my very first show of the New Year at ORA Nightclub in downtown Seattle, and this one was for a fun Trance and Progressive local Seattle DJ’s night called “Illuminate”. For this Illuminate it was an all B2B sets (B2B = “back-to-back”, 2 DJ’s playing a set together) night, and I was lucky enough to once again be paired up with one of my favorite local talents, the lovely Janice Chae, a.k.a. J-Note. If you’ve listened to some of my more recent mixes you’ve probably heard Janice and I spin together before, opening for the likes of Paul Oakenfold and Oliver Smith within the past 6 months. So, I am always excited to B2B with Janice and I really love how her taste in music works so well with mine and we always have so much fun and many laughs up there behind the decks. It ended up being a great night and we had a really good turn out at the club for a “local’s night”, so it was extra fun to play to a bunch of great people whom were there to have a fun time and dance the night away. Originally this Illuminate was announced to be an "Anjuna Tribute night", but that changed towards the end, however Janice and I were already working on getting an Anjuna playlist together, so we stuck with our original plan, since we both adore the Anjuna record labels, and played a magical playlist of may of our more recent Fave Anjuna tracks, plus one massive golden oldie by Mat Zo slipped in there thanks to Janice and I really loved hearing that one again after so many years. On Saturday, December 31st, I was honored to be invited to play at a NYE Trance DJ event at a club called Opaline, in Portland, Oregon. This was a special show for me for a couple of reasons, 1/ Opaline was a new club for me, which is always exciting and fun to spin at new venues, but also, 2/ this was my very first time playing in Portland since December 31st, 2019, for the NYE Bash at the Whiskey Bar, a club that I’ll always hold near and dear to my heart and which has since unfortunately closed down due to financial hardships caused by the COVID pandemic, which took the world by storm just a few months after that show.. This means that I was able to spin with some of my best DJ buddies like ZOXY and Scott Vorel (Cooltown) down there, whom I’ve missed terribly over the past several years. I was also joined by a Seattle Trance DJ and long-time buddy of mine, Serjey Andre Kul, which was a lot of fun, and the show was kicked off by a rising young DJ in Portland, Shay Baca, and she kicked off the eve with a banging Electro House set that had the crowd bouncing off the walls. We had a total blast that night bringing in the New Year, and the crowd was so much fun to play to. I was SOOOO happy the way this set turned out, and I was able to play tracks on the slower, more progressive side by so many big name artists that you usually find in the higher BPM’s of Uplifting Trance, such as Ronski Speed, Nitrous Oxide, DJ T.H., Dan Stone, and Kyau & Albert, plus some of my current FAVORITE spine tingly and brand new Progressive House tracks from the likes of Vintage & Morelli, SØNIN, Hiski, and Laura van Dam. I really tried to select tracks that might capture some feelings one might be inclined to feel on New Year’s Eve, and it was one of those nights where everything just fell together so perfectly and I wished the night would never end.. I know I’ll be listening to this set many times over the next many months, and I hope that you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed playing it. On Saturday, November 5th, I was incredibly honored to be direct support for world-renown and beloved Trance DJ and record producer, visiting us all the way from Wales, UK, Richard Mowatt, better known as SOLARSTONE, at Ora Nightclub, Seattle. This was actually my 3rd time getting to open for this famous guy, and it was really fun to see him again and be able to say hi and get to hand off the decks to Mr. Pure Trance himself. I had SO many great tracks that I was so excited to play that night, and the crowd was incredibly fun to play for and at a few points were jumping up and down and dancing so hard that the DJ booth was shaking so hard that I thought it might collapse haha, that was really exhilarating. Such an incredible evening of beautiful Trance and Progressive, beautiful smiling faces and hands in the air, incredibly positive energy, and I was so happy to be able to make people dance like that; it’s one of the best feelings in the world. On Saturday, October 1st, I was honored to be direct support, along with my long-time Seattle DJ peer and buddy, the lovely Janice Chae, a.k.a. J-Note, on a super fun “back-to-back” (B2B) opening set for one of my all-time favorite Trance DJ’s and Record Producers, Anjuna Star and renown Trance Pioneer, visiting us all the way from the UK, OLIVER SMITH, at Ora Nightclub in Seattle. I’ve been a fan of Oliver’s since the earliest stages of my Trance obsession when I first heard his collab with Mark Pledger in the early 2000’s, “Northern Lights”, hands down my number one favorite trance track ever. I am actually lucky enough to be able to say that this was my second time in my life handing the decks off to Oliver, and every time I see this guy, I am reminded of what a sweet, down-to-earth, genuinely nice gentleman Oliver is, and it’s always such a pleasure to talk to him. Janice and I had a total blast that night and bounced off each other just riffing on tracks in an unrehearsed B2B set, and I really loved the way the set turned out. The crowd that night was totally off-the-hook with tons of Anjunafam vibes and Anjuna T-shirts everywhere, could not have been a better night. Hey guys, hope you’re all doing well!! So, crazy to think it’s October already, and sorry it’s been a while since I have posted anything new. Sadly, since the COVID pandemic took the world by storm, two of the clubs that I used to play at regularly, The Underground in Seattle, and Whiskey Bar in Portland, OR, both shut down due to the lack of business and financial hardships brought on by the pandemic. Fortunately for me I still have an amazing club in Seattle to play at, ORA Nightclub, but moving forward I will probably have less shows to record unless something changes. Just a fact of life I guess. So, on the brighter side, I recently took my first vacation since the pandemic and went to visit some friends in Germany, which was awesome. I had been experimenting with some newer proggy tracks that I had been hoping to play at a progressive house show, but decided to record a demo set and I listened to it nonstop while I was in Germany. When I got home I made a few minor tweaks and re-recorded it last Saturday (Oct 15th), and I really loved the way the tracks just set this certain relaxing, yet peppy, introspective vibe, and (for me at least) I really love to listen to it while driving. So, I called this mix “Autumn Drive”, as fall is one of my very favorite times of year, when all the leaves turn beautiful colors and begin to fall, and we get some amazingly colorful sunsets here in the Pacific NW. Once again, I’ve been Jones’ing for 138, and on Saturday, June 11th, I fired up the DJ gear, and over some cocktails recorded a live set of some recent tracks I’ve been incessantly listening to lately, lightly seasoned with some heart-felt classics. The next day I listened to it, made a few changes to the tracklist, and recorded it again, ending up with this. I liked the way it turned out so decided to upload it to Soundcloud for anyone out there that is a fan of Hi-NRG, euphoric, and Uplifting Trance. As you may remember, I recently opened for Menno De Jong for his “Farewell Tour”, so in honor of Menno thought I would kick it off with a classic of his from back in 2005, “Tundra”, and also was able to get in a bunch of uplifting bangers from the likes of Alex M.O.R.P.H, Dave Steward, Billy Gillies, Greg Downey, Super8 & Tab, and finished it off with some angelic Vocal Trance selections from 4 Strings featuring vocals from one of the sweetest voices in Trance, Fenna Day, and also a couple AMAZING tracks from the very early 2000’s produced by a good buddy of mine, Chris Dececio, whom used to fly by the moniker, “Redd Square”, as his Trance producer alias. Chris is a super talented guy and still a record producer in the UK to this day, and also, my sound technician that does all the leveling and mastering of my mixes, including adding the “DJ Gotek” voice ID tags. It’s hard to believe how great these tracks of his still sound 20 years later!! I have been spending some time in LA lately for work and took that photo of the palm tree in Santa Monica a few weeks ago, so decided to name the mix on an LA theme in remembrance of the great weather and the beautiful blue sky. On Saturday, June 4th, 2022, I was beyond honored to open and hand off the decks to rising Anjunadeep star DJ/record producer, NOX VAHN, an incredibly talented and relevant name in the industry, known for his addictive dark techno vibes. To be honest, I didn't have a lot of lead time to prepare for this set, and I had to put a bit more forethought into planning for this one because Nox Vahn is slightly outside of the "comfort zone" of my usual sound on shows I get booked for, which tends to be on the more uplifting, melodic, progressive trance side of things, whereas Nox Vahn (to me) seems a bit more on the darker side for Anjuna. However, I love a good challenge(!), so I tried to come up with a more ambient, vibey feel to this set, not necessarily "dark" per se, but certainly not bright either, and maintained an undercurrent of some dreamy, more subtle melody, just to stay true to what I consider to be the "Gotek sound", whatever that is haha. As it turned out, it’s one of those funny things in life when you change things up and worry no one is going to like it, but I had numerous people come up to me afterwards and tell me this was one of their favorite sets that they’d ever heard by me, which I was surprised to hear, frankly, but very pleasantly so haha. On top of that, just like with the GIUSEPPE OTTAVIANI show a few weeks before this, Nox Vahn came out into the stage a little later than expected so I was able to play a slightly extended set (by 15 min) to a full house, which is always a blast. Anyway, Holy Cow, what an AWESOME night, the Anjuna crowd came out en-masse to support Nox Vahn, and the Trance Family Love and beautiful vibey feelings of Anjuna were in the air for sure, just a blurred memory of hands in the air and smiling faces dancing away all night, the BEST thrill I can imagine. On Saturday, May 21st, 2022, I was incredibly honored to open and hand off the decks to none other than GIUSEPPE OTTAVIANI, world-renown Italian DJ and record producer, at ORA Nightclub, Seattle. Giuseppe, also known as GO, is an incredible creative and pioneering force in the Trance industry, and just like some of the other UBER talented producers like Paul van Dyk, frequently performs at the top clubs and massive festivals with his sequencers and synths and produces his Trance real-time in the DJ booth. Long-time veteran of Trance music, GO is also a member of the project, Pure NRG, with British producer Solarstone, and has a long list of club Trance mega-hits and anthems played around the globe by all the biggest names in the industry. Needless to say, it was an amazing rush to open for GO (for my 2nd time!!), and the club was jam-packed with Trance fans and amazing, positive Trance Family energy. I tried to play an uplifting, energetic set, and pulled in many of my go-to Trance & Progressive artists like Sunny Lax, Beatsole, Myon, John Grand, Zuubi, and an awesome Trancey collab between Mike Koglin & Genix, an unlikely pairing, but they made some magic happen!!. Originally, I intended to end my hour set off with two recent incredible remixes of classics, the amazing Rub!k remix of “Happiness Happening” by Lost Witness, brings back such a great memory from yesteryear, and the awesome Elevven remix of Sushi by 7 Skies, another massive flashback choon!! But as fate would have it, GO came out onto the DJ stage almost 15 minutes past Midnight so I was able to squeak in 3 additional tracks, hence the longer-than-1-hour time on the mix. Finally got around to recording a new Uplifting Trance mix on Saturday, May 14th, 2022, just in time for Spring. I actually had hoped to record one of these as a “year-end mix” back around the holidays, but unfortunately just never had time with work etc. Regardless, I still have been buying a lot of uplifting 138-140 BPM Trance over the months, continuously listening and adding to my collection of the original style of music that drew me into the Trance scene way back in the late 90’s, and will always be near and dear to my heart. I finally distilled it down to these twelve tracks and recorded on a Saturday night just for fun, and really liked the way it turned out. This is all brand new (or fairly recent) releases, and there’s a nice euphoric build on this one with representation from a lot of my favorite “usual suspect” Uplifting Trance artists, including Suncatcher, Nitrous Oxide, Sean Tyas, Paul Miller, Activa, Craig Connolly, and Alex Wright. I really loved that this was a mostly instrumental journey in sound, with a lot of throw-back, nostalgic vibes of some older school Trance, reminiscent of the effervescent and bright uplifting Nu NRG era. Special call-outs to “Vert” by Nhato, probably my favorite track on the set, just blew me away and sends chills down my spine during the breakdown every time, NO-SO’s “I Do Both Jay & Jane”, with the electric female vocals and catchy chorus, and that sort of sexy after-hours party vibe, Billy Gillies’ “Starlab”, such a banger, this guy is new on my radar and super stoked to have discovered him, and finishing off with Simon Patterson & Will Atkinson with their epic “Golden Hour”, just kicks it into the stratosphere in style. The name of this mix was inspired by some photos I took on a recent flight to LA for work, and just the beauty of the majestic snow-capped NW mountains at 30,000 feet, and feeling excited to be able to travel for work again, everything feels hopeful and getting back to “normal”, so I hope that vibe carries through in this mix and gives you a sense of hope and euphoria too.
