On this episode of Neon Galactic, David Stuss and I are joined by Andrew Gallimore, one the world’s leading researchers and theorists into dimethyltriyptamine, or DMT, who will soon be publishing his third book on the subject, “Death By Astonishment: Confronting the Mystery of the World’s Strangest Drug.”

Gallimore is an author, chemical neuropharmacologist, and neurobiologist whose work has pushed the boundaries of modern science and confronted the limits of conventional thinking on the use of psychedelics and their interface with the human brain.

We discuss the history of DMT — how it was discovered by modern scientists, isolated and ultimately synthesized.

We talk about the role various pioneers played in that effort, from Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert to Terence McKenna and Rick Strassman, and how all the conventional theories for its visionary effects seem to fail deeper analysis.

DMT has been found across the world, in both plants and animals, and even in the human body. Its relative ubiquity and transformative power suggest that its efficacy as a drug may be more than just an evolutionary defense mechanism against predation.

Gallimore ultimately arrives at a startling conclusion — that DMT amounts to a technology allowing some higher form of intelligence the ability to seize control of our cognitive systems and communicate through the fantastical realms of deep inner space.

We also talk about the DMT moonshot efforts, initiated by Gallimore, to infuse patients with DMT and allow them to extend and stabilize their experiences under DMT and begin a deeper exploration.

The idea has been tested on volunteers for up to 30 minutes, and those patients emerged from these episodes with no ill effects.Gallimore says the next step is to prolong these journeys, broaden exploration, and try to learn about and map the realms that DMT has opened up.
