Apple PodcastsAndroidRSSBill Boushka was born in 1943 and raised as an only child in Arlington Virginia in the USA. His primary educational years where in his words ‘good,’ he enjoyed music especially the piano though he struggled with social integration. Bill’s later years in academia saw him expelled for coming out as gay in 1961. Despite that set back he went on to graduate and earn anMA in Mathematics. In 1968 he was drafted into the U.S Military which for him brought about a whole new set of issues around forced same-sex dormitory and housing accommodation. While considerable progress has been made with regards to sexuality in the U.S Armed Services with society adopting a more conciliarity tone, many areas of gender identity still need to be addressed both in and out of the Armed Services especially around transgender persons and women’s bathrooms spaces. Bill’s own experiences growing up as a gay man lie at core of his writing, so let’s give you a heads-up as to what you can expect from his work.

The Book
This is the third book in the series under the prefix of ‘Do Ask, Do Tell.’ The universal theme of the series looks at self-direction and distinctive accountability and how these principles apply to gay rights, equality and of course free speech. While the other two books focus on their own areas of concerns and involvements that have impacted Bill and the wider gay community over time, I really want to focus on the third book.
The book is in two parts, Part one headed up Non Fiction comprises a prologue and six nonfiction chapters about problem areas, with the recreation of a variety of incidents at various stages of the author’s life. The sequence of events isnot chronological as in the other books. Part two is headed up Fiction and comprises three short stories written at different times, the first story written in 1969 is around Bill’s own fictionalised account of what he experienced in the military with regards to Basic Combat Training then. The second written in 1981 relays the story of two former college roommates reuniting via a road trip through countryside heavily ruined by coal strip-mining. And the last story written in 2013 talks about a bizarre road adventure coupled with acceptance of an ‘instant family’ scenario, like it or not.
