Episode 6 – 461: High Performance Pit Stop

Let’s talk about focus on performance!

There’s a saying that the squeaky wheel gets the oil.  But today I wanted to remind us all that even the fastest race cars need a pit stop for the win.

In order to maintain the ability to perform at high levels,

it’s important to intentionally plan and nourish development opportunities for ourselves, and those we lead.  When
we are proactive about maintaining and driving performance, we can intervene in advance, to avoid significant issues getting in the way of progress.

So, take on the pit crew perspective, and gear your best efforts toward high performance the  things you want repeated that help you and/or your organization to grow.

Let’s talk about focus on performance!

Episode 6 - 460: Take the flight – Do the Thing!

    Let’s talk about Doing It!

Sometimes we put things off. The truth is that when we put things off, they usually don’t happen.

When we take the time to be intentional about getting things done, we participate in helping things come to pass.

We can all likely think of things big and small, where we decide to take action. Sometimes things turned out as planned and other times we learned some valuable life lessons or gained some valuable experiences, or maybe even met interesting people who impacted us or that we were able to positively impact.

In life, in work, and even in play, the things we want to

accomplish need more than thought, they need active participation.

So, this week I encourage you – Just take action and Do It! #NoRegrets

    Episode 6- 459: We’re all Human

In the ‘80’s there was a song with a line that said “People

are People so why should it be, you and I should get along so awfully.” The
song went on to acknowledge people are different, but it questioned how people who
didn’t even really know one another could hate one another.

And this song reminds me of the importance of getting to

know the people we work with and the people we live near.  When we know someone who also has good will
and intention, it allows us to have better dialogue with one another.  When we get to know someone as an individual,
it strengthens the foundation on which the relationship is built.  It also allows us to appreciate knowing them
from a different perspective.  Being able
to have effective dialogue is a key to good relationships.   Not too long ago  I was in from of a group and I asked them to
share the one word that best described them.
Another group I asked to share something unique or a superpower they wish
they might enjoy having.  As people
leaned in to hear the information and share theirs, a heighten level of
engagement came about.  In each of those
cases the depth of engagement allowed us to get the work done and it served to
    develop and strengthen interpersonal
bonds with in the group…because they were reminded, behind our roles, we
    are all just people.

So, I encourage you, as you go throughout your day, keep in mind

that we are all just people making our way through life, we all have stories,
we all have our good moments and bad ones, we all need help sometimes, we can
all benefit from kindness and grace…we’ all human.

    Let’s talk  about being human.

  • Episode 6- 458: Hear to Listen

Episode 6- 458: Hear to Listen

Let’s talk about hearing our truth.

It’s important to listen to what people are saying so that

you can harvest what is meant to help you flourish. Beware of your personal filters that may be an impediment to hearing what is being said and to listening to learn.

When people tell you have you have impacted them positively

or negatively…Listen.  Be discerning, look for truths. Consider trying to look at things from another perspective in
order to gain a better view of situations and circumstances. Look for patterns, then use those patterns and the information you have gathered to help you see more clearly, and to make positive change.

Sometimes, there are lessons to be gathered even in the

silence, perhaps especially in the silence, when there is a chance to think deeply. Listen not only for what is said, but for what may seem to remain unstated.

Choose to receive what you hear and what you don’t hear, as a

gift.  A gift that may have an immediate use, or one that may be a seed for an advantage or greater things in the future. Sometimes the gifts we receive may be enjoyable, other times they may
require experience or understanding to manage use them to their fullest potential.  Truth that others share with us, and that we allow ourselves to take in can be like that, immediately enjoyable,
or something that takes time to manage well in order to use it for our benefit.
Dare to hear, to listen for the truth.

Taking in the truth can free us from the false constructs that may have us feeling bound or stuck. Indeed, truth applied can set us free.

    Listen for truth.

Let’s talk about hearing our truth.

    Episode 6-454: Maintaining and Exceling

    Let’s talk about being proactive.

Being proactive is crucial in both health and work. Seeking medical attention proactively allows for better information, options, and choices. The same principle applies to work, where maintaining a strong foundation is essential for future success. Proactive behavior involves seeking understanding, asking direct questions, and anticipating and preparing for potential challenges. This approach allows for positive decision-making, exploration of options, and alignment of actions with future goals. The message emphasizes the importance of seizing proactive opportunities in health, work, or job-related matters to set oneself up for success.

    Let’s talk about being proactive.

  • Episode 6- 457: One Bad Apple…

    Episode 6- 457: One Bad Apple…

Let’s talk about taking tough action

A while back I saw a picture of an apple online.  It was one of those perfect looking red apples, And then there was a second picture of the same apple from a different perspective that revealed the apple had a bite out of it.  I was reminded of the song about one bad apple being able to spoil a whole bunch. Both of these visuals contain some good leadership and life lessons.

The first lesson learned is that we can’t always take things

at face value, especially when we are taking on something new. Taking time to investigate or research a matter will allow us to better understand the impact and and magnitude of a situation.  It also allows us to hone in on the true issue and minimize negative impact.  When we blindly proceed without investigating, it might lead to an undesired surprise that requires compromise or greater intervention.

Secondly, when we take care of things at the time that we see or anticipate an issue, it can lead to more problems or difficulties. Sometimes we underestimate how initially small matters may exponentially negatively impact a larger group or process.  When we take action to address concerns as they arise, we likely end up addressing an issue while it is smaller, and so we use less resources to take care of a matter.

Taking action sooner rather than later, can sometimes be tough.  However, it can allow us and those around us to use our resources of time more effectively.

I encourage you to stay mindful of the impact of “one bad apple” and to take action when you determine that there is an issue to be

resolved or a situation to be addressed.

When we take action and address issues, we make things better or ourselves and others.

Let’s talk about taking tough action.

  • Episode 6- 456: Authenticity with a Filter

    Episode 6- 456: Authenticity with a Filter

    Let’s talk about authenticity.

We can be authentic and exercise self-control.

Authenticity does not equate to being out of control or operating without a file.

When people say they want authenticity, what they likely mean is that they want to create or maintain a culture and space of inclusive behavior where people feel comfortable bringing their best selves to work.  They want honesty and truth, so that they can use that information to manage future decisions.

When we are authentic, we give other people the courage to be authentic.  When we take the time to establish relationships with others, the belonging in those relationships will provide a good foundation for authenticity.

Choose authenticity, choose to be your best self. Instill hope in others.

Episode 6- 455: Why Did You Say That?

    Let’s talk about intentional communication.
When we are intentional about our communication, it can make
a big difference in our relationships. Why we communicate should consider our immediate intent and our longer term outcomes. Being intentional is not only about the content we share, but how we share it and what we realistically expect to come from it.

When we plan our communication and are intentional about how we communicate and what we communicate, we have a better

chance that our communication will result in a positive outcome

    Let’s talk about intentional communication.

    Episode 6-453: Starting Over

    Let’s talk about getting started.

Sometimes we are afraid to get started or to start over, but it’s important to get started. The longer we delay starting, the longer we delay our acquisition of experience and progress.  When we delay getting started it pushes things out or it may eliminate an opportunity.

Starting over, is about letting go of the things that hold us back or keep us stuck.  In the world of work, starting over might mean envisioning something from scratch versus trying to rework something that was created for circumstances, and in times that are no longer relevant.

When we start over, we challenge our status quo, we make way for new learning and breakthrough.

As the saying goes: Time stands still for no one!  What are you waiting for - Get started.

  • Episode 6-452: Division or Teaming

    Episode 6-452: Division or Teaming

Let’s talk about being better together.

When we come together, we have a choice to look for commonalities

and alignments versus looking for things that divide. Instead of finding differences to establish a ranking, seek out positive attributes that
    compliment and strengthen the group.

The next time you are placed on a work team or are part of a

volunteer group, seek to focus on the common goal, and then look for the
strengths that each one can bring to the process. Next, you can look for the
growth opportunities that the project or process might provide for team members.

When we value what each person brings to the group and we intentionally consider growth and learning opportunities, it helps everyone to be more engaged in the relationship and the outcomes of the work.

    Choose being better together.
