  • 153 - Is our biggest strength our greatest weakness?

SEND US A TEXT MESSAGE!!! Let Drs. Nii & Renee know what you think about the show!

It’s well known that doctors put patients first even though it may have negative social effects on doctors. Whether we call it professionalism or an edict, this way of life has allowed us to be viewed as unbiased advocates for our patients.

Dr. Danielle Ofri joins me on this episode to discuss an Op-Ed she wrote in the NY Times last year discussing if our professionalism is being taken advantage of by hospitals.  Dr. Danielle Ofri  is an internist at Bellevue Hospital and NYU School of Medicine. She writes regularly for the New York Times, Slate Magazine and other publications about medicine and the doctor-patient relationship. Dr. Ofri is the author of five books, including, most recently, “What Patients Say; What Doctors Hear.” Her TED talks include Deconstructing Perfection and Fear: A Necessary Emotion.

So back in the days of medical school, I used to be able to brag about eating a BigMac and then be able to run a 5 minute mile on the treadmill. Well those days are long gone. I can’t run anywhere near that fast and I still got the fast food habit. To make matters worse, how easy is it to get something healthy while on night shift and its 3AM?!!

I invited Dr. Siobahn Key to help us understand that weight is a common struggle for physicians and we often feel that we should have it figured it. Let’s get real - there are plenty of aspects of our job that make it easy to gain and hard to lose weight.

Dr. Siobhan Key is both a Family Physician, and Obesity Medicine and  Weight Loss Coach for Physicians. She is the host of a weekly podcast Weight Solutions for Physicians. Her passion is helping people learn to stop emotional eating and feel confident in their ability to manage their weight for the rest of their life.

Today is Day 3 of the summit and I’ve got a special interview for you. Did you know that there is a growing movement of individuals and couples retiring in their 40s and for some even earlier? This is called being Financially Independent & Retiring Early movement. It’s safe to say that joining the FIRE movement requires not just discipline but a huge change in mindset.

My next guests are Christina and Amon Browning, who recently on their popular YouTube channel announced they retired in their early 40s. They called in all the way from Lisbon, Portugal, and we’re going to hear the nuts and bolts of mindset and lifestyle changes necessary to reach this feat. Some of the moves they made included saving over 70% of their income, making smart decisions with real estate, and having a “can-do” mentality.

If you haven’t discovered their YouTube channel then you are missing out. They’re videos are amazing and educational. They just dropped their FIRE workbook, which is a step by step guide to getting to financial independence. ….cuz a brother is giving away free copies of this badboy. We’re using this and are on our way….

  • 145 - DOTB VS Day 2 - Work Smarter, Not Harder by Embracing Passive Streams of Income

SEND US A TEXT MESSAGE!!! Let Drs. Nii & Renee know what you think about the show!

We’re on to Day 2 of the Docs Outside the Box Virtual Summit. Yesterday, we heard from Dr. Carmen Brown on how leaving the US to practice overseas both revitalized her career and her mental well- being.

Today we’re shifting to creating wealth for yourself but not through your job. A lot of people who have detached from their 9 to 5 refer back to the book called Rich Dad, Poor Dad as the catalyst. This book was written by Robert Kiyosaki in 1997 and told the story of his 2 dads – his real father (poor dad) and the father of his best friend (rich dad) – and the ways both men shaped his thoughts on money and investing

My next guest, Dr. Peter Kim has been doing the same for some time now. He’s he runs the famous blog Passive Income MD, and Curbside Real Estate, which is a concierge service for physicians looking to buy real estate. He’s here to help me parse through a recent interview that real estate mogul Grant Cardone did on VladTV, which is a popular YouTube channel focused on the news in Hip Hop. In this video interview, Grant talked about his childhood, how he started in real estate and also how he quickly multiplied his holdings. It’s a very polarizing interview, look below for the embedded video to watch.

  • 144 - DOTB VS Day 1 - Mindset to practice in the land down under

SEND US A TEXT MESSAGE!!! Let Drs. Nii & Renee know what you think about the show!

Hey all and welcome to Day 1 of the Virtual Summit,

In this episode, we’re bringing back a guest from way back. From Episode 1 and the land down under - Dr. Carmen Brown is back to speak about living in Australia and New Zealand. Her episode is the highest downloaded episode for the podcast, and has been the spark that helped this show to gain traction with you all.

Now a 10 year veteran of living in Australia / New Zealand, you’re going to hear more about the mindset hurdles she and her husband got past to live life on their own terms. Often times, we get caught up on “what I should do,” or “traditionally this,” but fail to realize those thoughts prevent us from finding true happiness. For Dr. Carmen and her husband, the road to happiness started was realizing that the status quo was unacceptable.
