  • 287: Married To An Alpha Female - Farm Widow Edition

It's the Spring time which means podcasting for Mr. Weisman is a no go. That being said, we've had a lot going down on the farm and in the Weisman household, so welcome to the Farm Widow Edition of our Married to an Alpha Female series.

First up, a quick update on the retreat I hosted recently. It's so nice to just get out in nature with other female physicians. We had an amazing time and I can't wait to do it again. That's something Craig knows…

...what Craig doesn't know is that I broke the lawn mower… again. I swear that thing just hates me. Every single time I try to mow, something goes wrong. Also, our hot tub occasionally doubles as a shower for the kids.

I mean, the water is really hot… that should kill all the bacteria right?

Listen in to hear all about what's going on down on the farm and what's keeping Craig out until all hours of the night. Plus, I'm sharing tips for all of you partners of Alpha Females.

It may just be me, but I think I rocked this Farm Widow Edition! Let me know what you think!

"Momming is hard, parenting is hard, there is no hood like parenthood." Errin Weisman

    In this episode:

[02:21] It's just me today on this farm widow's edition.

[02:27] I share about my outdoor retreat that we just finished up.

[04:35] Listen as I share things that Craig doesn't know.

[07:17] Sometimes I bathe the children in the hot tub and call it good.

[07:36] "Half-assed parenting is absolutely acceptable."

[11:00] I'm doing Craigs down on the farm segment.

[12:16] Craig and his dad try to be very purposeful in their planting.

[14:23] Now for tips on being married to an alpha female.

[17:14] Thank you for listening to this widow's addition.

  • 286: Physician Dad with Dr. Jeremy Toffle

Dad's need to talk things out too. This past year hasn't been tough just on us moms. When I found out about Dr. Jeremy Toffle and his Imperfect Dad MD podcast, I knew I had to have him on. He's having conversations with other physician dads chatting about their experiences being both dads and physicians.

Dr. Toffle's father was a physician as well. He remembers not seeing his dad much because he was constantly working. These days there has definitely been a switch flipped in the roles between moms and dads and he thinks it's a good thing.

Prior to the pandemic, he felt like he was doing a pretty good job at being a doctor and a dad. Then the kids were home 24/7 and he realized that there is a huge difference between being the Pinterest dad and real life.

Listen as he shares his story, why he started his blog then podcast, and how he's hoping to help other physician dads with his message. This was a fantastic conversation with another Doctor's Podcast Network member and physician parent just trying to figure this thing out.

"All of a sudden you are a parent and you're not supposed to fail at this and then you do." Dr. Jeremy Toffle

    In this episode:

[07:15] Listen as Dr. Toffle discusses his podcast Imperfect Dad MD and why he started it.

[10:48] He speaks about when he started his blog, which was the impetus for his podcast.

[12:45] Dr. Toffle talks about dad burnout and how that looks in the dads he talks to.

[15:51] Male physicians aren't as willing to talk about burnout as women physicians are.

[19:06] Dr. Toffle speaks about how he is teaching his boys that there are no girl and boy colors, toys, or tv shows.

[21:45] There are resources for dad's so look up Dr. Toffle and another one is Dr. Blake Jones.

  • 285: How to Start a Super Crazy Business and Go PRN Clinically - Part 6

This has truly been an amazing series. We started out talking about how to go about creating your business, now let's get into the nitty gritty. Contracts, taxes, and making sure that you're setting yourself up for financial and mental success.

First things first, taxes. I know. It seems super scary to have to step out and handle your own taxes rather than being paid through a W2 and just having them taken out. But here's the deal, if you create a financial plan and remember to simply put back money for taxes, you'll be fine.

In fact, knowing that you need to take out money for taxes and insurance, use this information going into your contract negotiations. Don't short yourself and later realize that you didn't think of those expenses. Before you ever leave your current job, ask for the information on what you and your employer pay and then factor that into your contract rate.

Also, don't be afraid to have someone who is well-versed in medical contracts go over yours before you sign. You have the right to have the contract reviewed to make sure it says and covers exactly what you think it does. Protect yourself and know your rights.

The only person who is negotiating for your life and career is you. Know what you want in both and make sure that you only settle on things that aren't non-negotiables.

Listen in to hear all of my tips and advice as well as my responses to questions I've received as this series has progressed! If you want to change your life, then listen to the whole series and really think about whether or not this is the right route for you!

"If you don't ask, it's an automatic no." Dr. Errin Weisman

    In this episode:

[02:12] Welcome to the last installment of this series!

[02:38] I want to talk about taxes first, the differences between being an employee with a W2 and a contractor with a 1099 form.

[06:30] Use this information as a tool when you go into negotiations.

[08:08] Now let's talk about contract reviews.

[08:31] Make sure you ask for what you want. The worst thing that can happen is that they will say no.

[09:14] Find someone who specializes in contracts to go over your contracts.

[10:16] When it comes to negotiations, the only person who is going to negotiate your contracts is you.

[11:38] Marketing strategies are a very important part when looking for PRN work.

[12:01] Get on LinkedIn when looking for PRN work.

[12:44] If you are thinking about coaching, come over to Physicians Coaching Alliance.

[13:19] Listen as I share the two different timelines you need to make.

[14:35] Diana wants to know how you balance clinical PRN work with starting your new business?

[15:35] Delegation and outsourcing is an important component when you are working PRN, launching a new business and spending time with your family.

[16:38] It's so important to minimize the parent's guilt when you are making this transition.

[18:23] If this series has been helpful, let me know.

  • 284: Engineers Get Burntout Too with Casey Bertelsman

I'm so excited to share this conversation with you! Casey Bertelsman is a member of my team and an amazing resource on systems and processes. She's trained as an engineer, but engineers get burnout too, so listen in to learn her story and see if you've experienced anything like this.

Casey has always been systems focused. When it comes down to it, a good system leads to a fantastic client experience overall. In her role as an engineer, she's pretty much 100% people focused.

She works as an electrical engineer and helps to plan and execute electrical systems in new construction and buildings. Without her expertise, installing lighting, safety systems, smart systems, and more would be impossible.

However, she's in a field that is very highly male dominated. Which as we all know, takes a toll on you as you try to expand and grow professionally.

Listen as she shares her story, why she's so passionate about engineering, and what she's doing to make women feel more included in her field. Casey has been an amazing addition to my team and I'm excited to share her story with you.

"It's hard to see what that career trajectory looks like when you don't see people that look like you in higher roles." Casey Bertelsman

    In this episode:

[02:11] Welcome to the show, Casey!

[02:19] Casey shares her background and what she brings to the world.

[04:49] Learn about her journey into the engineering field.

[07:16] Her current job has a lot of opportunities and she loves designing lighting for buildings.

[08:19] Casey discusses how she is trained to influence the workplace for women.

[11:15] Part of why she started her podcast is because there were no women at her workplace in a position above hers.

[13:18] What engineer burnout looks like.

  • 283: How to Start a Super Crazy Business and Go PRN Clinically - Part 5 with Dr. Dena George

It's time. It's time to bring another amazing doctor into this discussion on how to go PRN clinically and start your own super crazy business, and I could think of no one better than Dr. Dena George. Listen as we chat about why it's very possible for you and what you should be focused on to make this dream happen!

Dr. George is an amazing physician but she's also a coach for physicians. We've worked together in the past and there is nothing but love all around because we've both seen a new way to act on our passion and our calling.

Since I started this amazing series, I've had several people write in and ask questions about how to get started, how to market, and where to find clients. Dr. George is here to help me answer them.

You know how so often people ask about getting started and the answer is just to start? While that's true, it helps to have mentors in the space who can help guide you in this. That said, when it comes down to it, you have to have the confidence to start doing the work.

You don't need extra certifications. You don't need a website. You don't need fancy software and a built out sales funnel. You need to figure out what you want to do in your business, learn all that you can about the online space, and network your butt off.

Where can you find clients? EVERYWHERE!

This was truly an amazing conversation. Dr. George even shares the five roadblocks she sees so many physician entrepreneurs stumble into. Listen in to hear those as well as how to avoid them. If you have questions for us, send them on in!

"I firmly believe that clear and focused physicians change the world." Dr. Dena George

    In this episode:

[02:20] Welcome to the show Dr. Dena George!

[03:32] We are going to answer some questions that have been asked since the series started.

[03:48] The first question is 'how do you get started in coaching and where do you get started?'

[04:12] Dr. George says the way you get started is get started.

[08:19] You don't need extra certifications or an extra degree because nobody ever asks.

[10:45] Another question is from someone new in business and they want to know how to put themselves out there.

[14:44] You do not have to have a website to put yourselves out there.

[16:06] The only requirement for marketing is to tell people what you know and how you can help them and then offer to help them.

    [17:44] "Where are the clients?"

[20:44] Hear Dr. George's five stumbling blocks for entrepreneurs.

[21:04] #1 Trying to speak to everyone.

    [23:57] #2 Judgement.

    [27:06] #3 Comparison.

    [31:32] #4 Hustle.

[36:18] Listen as we discuss PCA, Physicians Coaching Alliance.

    [37:39] #5 Overcomplicating.

[42:52] When it comes to entrepreneurship, it's not failure, it's feedback.

[44:06] Thank you so much for being on the show!

  • 282: Reimagine with Dr. Carina Hopen

There's no one right way to be a doctor. What you plan to do when leaving residency isn't necessarily what you'll find yourself doing as you grow and evolve as a person and as a physician. This was and is definitely true for Dr. Carina Hopen who joins me to chat all about her career and life reimagined.

The last time Dr. Hopen was on the show she wasn't fully able to discuss what she was up to. In fact, she was one of the first doctors who were asked to help Amazon launch their telehealth platform. This led to a true reimagination of both her career and her life at home.

This was all happening during a time that telehealth seemed very fringe. If you think about it, up until everything with Covid, telehealth has typically been received with scorn. Amazon was working to remove those barriers and help more people have access to qualified physicians.

The only issue was what that meant for her family. Being in the military and living the military lifestyle, she was used to spending time away from her family, but that didn't make the transition easy.

Listen as she shares her story with Amazon, why she needed to part ways with them, and how she's working to find a balance between her passion and her need to be with family. How have you reimagined your life and career as you've navigated all of these twists and turns?

"Hard decisions can become easier once you know exactly what your mission is and what the core values are that support the mission." Dr. Carina Hopen

    In this episode:

[02:13] Welcome back to the show, Dr. Hopen!

[03:29] Dr. Hopen shares her background and what she brings to the world.

[04:09] Why she chose the word reimagine.

[08:41] Hear about Amazon's mission and how everything they do is a part of their customer obsession.

[10:02] "A lot of people's health needs are based on what they do and their lifestyle choices and less so of medications."

[10:53] Why she stopped working with Amazon.

[13:28] She's opening her own private practice in June of this year.

[16:14] Learn about the business mentor she connected with.

[20:00] The benefits of reaching out to someone when you don't know how to get where you want to go.

[22:12] When you have a mentor or a coach, there is an accountability piece and positive pressure.

  • 281: How to Start a Super Crazy Business and Go PRN Clinically - Part 4

First, let me say how happy I am that you all have liked this series. If you're thinking about changing how you work in medicine, then this really is the series for you. Now, the next part is once you have your baby business up and running and taking some of the load of your income, how do you actually start practicing PRN?

There are several things you should consider, but before you do ANYTHING you need to tackle your mindset. Fear is what holds us back from building our businesses and fear is what will keep you stuck.

This same thing applies when you go to talk to your organization about a change in how you work with them. So before you have that conversation, start thinking about what you want your work life to look like.

What are your non-negotiables? Do you need a specific schedule? Need to stop being on call? What do you have to have to make ongoing practice work for you and your family?

Then listen in as we talk about the different negotiation buckets! I'm also tackling malpractice insurance and ways that you can be paid. The thing about being PRN clinically is that you really get to call the shots in a lot of ways.

What specific questions do you have about PRN clinical work?

"Why are we so bad at talking to other humans? If you think about networking as trying to communicate with someone, just try to be interested in someone and try to have a conversation with them, it's so much easier to make a personal connection with them." Dr. Errin Weisman

    In this episode:

[02:57] I answer a question from a listener. If you have a question email me at [email protected]

[06:01] Fear is what is keeping you from starting a business.

[06:43] Content is any way for which you are spreading your message.

[08:30] Are you ready for part 4?

[08:54] We are talking about clinical logistics but first mindset stuff.

[10:48] Take the time to advocate for what you really want to do.

[13:52] The first bucket to look at are your must haves, your non negotiables.

[14:54] Next figure out what you would like to have but might be negotiable.

[15:30] The third bucket is what would be nice to have.

[16:51] You then must think about your malpractice insurance.

[20:08] When it comes to you getting paid, the best way is whatever works for you.

[23:37] You get to decide how you want to get paid when you do clinical PRN work.

[24:51] Thank you for listening and I'll see you next week for part 5.

  • 280: Empower with Dr. Kelly Casperson

Are you waiting for someone else to tell you're an expert? STOP! You've gone to medical school. You're a practicing physician. You're an expert in your field no matter what that field is. Stop waiting for someone else to empower you and realize that the key to empowerment is within yourself.

That being said, we've all been there. We let our jobs and our roles define us, but we have to stop. Dr. Kelly Casperson joins me to chat about empowerment and pleasure and how the two are extremely interconnected.

Dr. Casperson is a urologist who is dedicated to educating women about their pelvic health. She's also a surgeon, speaker, educator, entrepreneur, and podcaster! On her podcast You Are Not Broken, she digs into all things sex, pleasure, and empowerment.

Listen as she shares more about her story and how she became an entrepreneur. She's also sharing her thoughts on sex and why all forms of play need to be considered in the larger conversation. Last but not least, do you know why women have sex? She's sharing that too and why we need to shift our perspective on sex and its importance in our lives.

"The person who needs to give you permission is already in the room." Dr. Kelly Casperson

    In this episode:

[02:47] Welcome to the show, Dr. Casperson!

[03:21] Dr. Casperson shares her background and what she brings to the world.

[05:31] Listen as Dr. Casperson discusses why she picked the word Empower.

[08:52] We as physicians let our jobs define us… and we need to stop.

[13:42] Learn about her podcast, how she started, and the challenges she has faced.

[15:59] How empowerment and pleasure connect.

    [17:16] Why women have sex.

  • 278: 3 Brand - Spankin' New Ways to Eliminate Sunday Dreads (and no, Yoga is not one!)

You know that feeling you have when you're getting to the end of your time off and it's like a deep dark pit is about suck you up and never let you go? I call those the Sunday Dreads. They can and will go away and I'm giving you three ways to eliminate them today.

I can't take credit for all of these recommendations though. My good friend and mastermind member, Kelli Thompson, has a system that she's been talking about and I love it. She calls them the N's. Notice it, Name it, Normalize it, and Neutralize it.

Because once you've noticed the feeling, if you work to name it and normalize it, then neutralizing it is much easier.

This works if it's just a one-time, stressed out, hard season of life type moment. But if you keep having them week after week, month after month, then it could be your body telling you that it's time for a change. If that's the case, you'll want to start doing things to make changes in your life and see if that helps.

For instance, stop scrolling Facebook, turn off the TV, stop listening or consuming content that causes you stress and anxiety. It's amazing what happens when you stop filling your head with things that make the Dreads worse.

Last, try some DO magic. Grab a book or a rolled up towel or have a partner massage the occiput on your skull. That area is specifically linked to your sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system and by manipulating the area, you activate your calm!

Don't believe in DO magic? That's fine (though a scalp massage is always warranted!). Get your butt outside. There is a ton of research that shows walking barefoot in the grass with the sun shining on your face is an amazing way to ground your body and settle your emotions.

Once you've tried some of these, come back and let me know what worked, what didn't, and how you're feeling now!

"To me it felt like this big dark storm cloud had just surfaced around me and I was like OMG I have to go back and it really killed any family time we had left on Sundays." Dr. Errin Weisman

    In this episode:

[01:32] I'm talking about the Sunday dreads!

[03:40] Tip #1 is the N's - Notice it, Name it, Normalize it and Neutralize it.

[05:48] Tip #2 Use them as a signal for change.

[07:14] Tip #3 is some DO magic knowledge, osteopathic manipulation.

[09:07] I'm sharing how to use my DO magic with details but no slides.

[11:13] I wanted to give you some actional things to do with all the mindset work.

  • 279: How to Start a Super Crazy Business and Go PRN Clinically - Part 3

Making connections is 100% the most important part of growing your business. I mean yes, you need to market your business, and you need to work on your offers, but none of that matters if you aren't making true connections with other people.

As many of you know, I hate Facebook. One of the first things I did when I started my business was to start making waves on LinkedIn. My people are there and when someone is active on LinkedIn, they're likely looking for real solutions and connections!

Now, one thing to note as you start connecting with people is that you are making connections. You aren't becoming some scammy salesperson who pops into DMs just to pitch your services. That's gross. Don't do it!

Be prepared to make real connections and then foster those connections. If that's not you, then be sure that you're connecting with people that you'd love to have in your sphere in real life.

Okay, so you've started making connections. Now it's time for the Errin-Weisman School of Marketing. You ready for it? Your marketing process has two whole steps.

First, share what you know. Second, create solutions to help the people who need it.

It's legitimately that simple. Be willing to share your knowledge freely and then when people want more of what you know, offer them a solution that works for them and you! BOOM! Marketing done!

Listen in for all the goodies and my strategies for taking your baby business into the toddler years!

"Starting an online business can feel like you are shouting out into the darkness, you're wondering, is anybody listening? Am I just going to continue doing all this work and it will go into the vacuum of space?" Dr. Errin Weisman

    In this episode:

[01:51] This series has been so fun. Are you ready for part 3?

[04:46] Today we are talking about the business development side.

[05:24] Making connections is so important when you are building your business.

[07:22] Remember that direct connections are the fastest way to bring people into your business.

[08:48] One of the first things I did when I started my business was to get involved with LinkedIn.

[11:01] Get in people's DMs and start a conversation with them, ask them a question.

[13:48] #2 is marketing. Tell people what you know and offer to help them.

[16:30] What do you know, how can you deliver that to people, then show them how you can help them.

[17:01] Keep talking, your message will fall out of your mouth.

[20:46] If you want sustainability for the long term, repurpose your content.

[22:55] Next week I will bring you part 4 about going PRN Clinically.

    [23:52] Thank you for listening!
