Alright, we're on part 2 of the "Start a Super Crazy Business" series and we're chatting all about how to get started. I'm sharing practical steps along with some important mindset information designed to help you get started, now!
This time around, we're fact finding. It's time to figure out what it is you want to do with your business and the best way to do it is to start doing some research. Dust off those first year medical student studying skills and let's get started.
Before you do a single bit of research though, you'll want to get a binder or designate an electronic folder where you can put all the information you gather.
Now it's time to start searching the internet. Along with looking up various industries and ways that you can contribute to them, you'll also want to go back to people that you follow and admire.
See what they're doing and who they have in their network and start getting an idea of who you can add to your own network. If you don't already have one, you'll want to get a LinkedIn profile set up.
Listen in to hear all of my tips for getting started plus some actionable steps you'll need to take once you've decided how you want to provide your contributions to the world. Because the world needs your super crazy business and so do you!

Have you ever felt like your life has completely blasted past all of your comfortable margins? If you've experienced burnout, then I'm guessing the answer to that is yes. Dr. Marion McCrary views building in margin as one of the pillars of combating burnout. Listen as she shares her story and why margin has become one of her favorite words.
Dr. McCrary found herself facing burnout as she took on more and more at work. She was passionate about so many things, but quickly realized that all of the white space that she loved was completely gone. That's when she took a hard look at her priorities.
After taking a sabbatical year in 2020 and fully diving into the coaching space, she decided it was time to start adding things back in. Her process for doing that is truly fantastic! Don't miss out on her explanation.
Also, if you find yourself pushing up against the clear margins that you've set for yourself, it's time to do a quick check on your priorities… 2.0. Listen in to learn more and if you love what Dr. McCrary is sharing, peruse the links below to follow her and bask in her space in the world.
"I like the white space on the edge of the paper… I love having that room to not have everything scheduled back to back to back to back." Dr. Marion McCrary

Here's the thing, if you have it in your heart to do something other than, or in addition to medicine, then that's what you need to do. I started my business while in the middle of burnout, but I knew I needed more. Listen as I share how I started my business and went PRN clinically.
I was in the middle of burnout when I felt the calling to something more. I knew that I was meant to help others and I loved being a doctor, but I didn't love what the institution of medicine had done to my life.
So I found another way to help others.
You want to know what I learned after finally taking my crazy idea and birthing a baby business? I was the only one holding me back from starting my crazy business. Just me. This is my first piece of advice for you. Stop holding yourself back and instead let yourself fully realize your dream
Next you need to relearn how to trust yourself and your decisions. In medicine we are taught to second and third-guess ourselves. That doesn't work in business. Stop trying to round table your ideas and just trust your gut.
I'm dropping a lot of truth bombs in this episode, but if you're ready for a change in your life and your work, then this is the episode for you!
"Until you get out of your own way, you will be sitting in the buts for a long time." Dr. Errin Weisman
In this episode:[00:28] Hey there and welcome to another episode of Doctor Me First!
[04:36] I am going to share how I went PRN clinically and give you some tangible takeaways and the steps to get there.
[05:14] #1 the only thing stopping you from doing this crazy business idea that you have is YOU.
[08:48] The next thing you need to do is relearn how to trust yourself.
[13:31] #3 is due your own experimental data collection.[16:01] Number four is viewing your business as a baby or as I call it a baby business.
[17:18] Your preconception counseling for your baby business is the fact finding phase.[18:33] The next phase in your baby business is the conception phase.
[19:33] The gestation phase is doing small steps forward and getting your business launched.
[22:39] The birth of your baby business or the launch is the moment you put it out in the world.
[25:02] Listen as I talk about the developmental milestones for your business.
[26:31] Here are the four questions that I get all the time.
[32:44] I am going to keep this series going so let me know what you think.

It's time for physicians, specifically women physicians, to stop silo-ing themselves. We need to come together and unify, especially in these times. Dr. Marlene Wust-Smith is a pediatrician turned magazine editor and she's on a mission to bring physicians unity through conversation, action, and advocacy.
While it seems like physicians are no longer valued by the hospitals and institutions they work for, there are a few out there who still care. It's true that in times past physicians have taken advantage of the perks of the job, but regardless we still deserve recognition.
So much of what Dr. Wust-Smith has seen in her career, has been a diminishing of the physician's role, but when it comes down to it, we are still the most knowledgeable in the room. That by itself deserves a modicum of respect and recognition, while not lessening the role of everyone in the institution.
There are places that are out there that doctors still get excited about going to work. Dr. Wust-Smith shares the differences between toxic institutions and healthy institutions. It starts with us. We are all a part of a for profit system and we need to get back to a pure place.
This was such a refreshing conversation. I love what Dr. Marlene is doing in the world and that she's helping young people in the process. We do need to find unity as physicians and we need to stop the toxic culture that has built over decades. Listen in to learn more.
"I love learning from differences and being unified on things we can be unified and respecting one another where we disagree." Dr. Marlene Wust-Smith
In this episode:[02:14] Welcome to the show, Dr. Wust-Smith!
[02:57] Her background and the magic she puts out in the world.
[05:53] Listen as Dr. Wust-Smith discusses why she chose the words Physicians Unity.
[09:37] Going from a well paid job into being a magazine editor and traveling as a locum pediatrician.
[13:44] The differences she sees from exceptional facilities versus toxic environments.
[17:49] She talks about listening to a previous Doctor Me First podcast where Errin was discussing putting rocks in a bucket.
[20:10] The importance of children reading actual books, they need tactile stimulation and turn pages on a book.

Are you considering making a big shift in your life? If not you, then perhaps someone you know? Then this is the episode for you! I'm digging into how you can go about quitting your job, almost, guilt free! The first step you need to take is to address the guilt that you're feeling. Who is it serving? What is it telling you? What good is coming to you by holding onto your guilt? What is the guilt keeping you from?
It's important to address this huge block because most of us go into medicine feeling as if we've been called to it. Suddenly abandoning this calling brings up a lot of turmoil so this is the first thing to address.
Step 2? Get clear on your intentions and how you want to show up in the world. Were you truly called to medicine or can you help heal others in a different way?
Listen in to hear all of the steps to this framework and hopefully decide if it's better for you and your family to stay… or to take the leap and go! Because it's okay to quit your job. Even as a doctor. You have a right to fulfillment and happiness!
"As I have gone through different transitions, guilt has been a big monster emotion that has shown up in my life." Dr. Errin Weisman
In this episode:[00:28] Hey OH! Welcome to another episode of Doctor Me First!
[03:00] You can transition whatever your journey is in the best way possible.
[04:49] Step #1, address the guilt.
[06:38] Hey guilt, what are you trying to teach me right now?
[06:54] Who is this guilt serving?
[07:15] What good is coming from holding on to this guilt?
[07:27] What is the guilt protecting you from?
[08:11] Now I'm going to ask you some questions to see if you can move past the guilt or see if there is another emotion under the guilt that you would rather have.
[09:20] Step #2, get clear on your intentions and how you want to show up.
[10:14] Step #3, come up with a short-term plan, transitional plan, and then a long-term goal.
[11:44] Step #4, understand the details so you can do the thing and the technical HR stuff.
[12:54] Step #5, have support all along the way.
[15:09] If you need more support, join the Burned Out to Badass Group or my self paced course the Burned Out to Badass CME.
[15:58] The only thing stopping you, is you. Working on yourself is Uber important.

I have been getting email after email and DM after DM about life hacks for productivity, which prompted me to do a little research! What I found is that you don't have a productivity issue, you have a time issue.
Women on average spend over 30hrs per week taking care of the household, making meals, and dealing with the needs of the family. Essentially you have a whole other part-time job that you didn't even realize you had.
Not that I'm saying the men in our lives aren't helping but on average, even when men are helping, women spend significantly more time taking care of the family. Listen in as I chat all about female specific time constraints and what you can do to take back some of your time.
Are you feeling tired? Of course you are! Your day is significantly more full than your male counterparts'… no matter what industries you both work in!
"The term I've been using and a lot of women in the coaching space have been using is the unvisible workload of women." Dr. Errin Weisman
In this episode:[00:29] Welcome to another episode of Doctor Me First!
[03:00] I'm sharing some statistics with you about how productive women are.
[05:29] We have to recognize we get tired because we do so much more.
[06:43] When is enough enough?
[08:18] Successful, balanced and wealthy women intentionally spend their time as much as they intentionally spend their money.
[08:56] The three D's I want you to remember when it comes to your calendar you are either going to do it, delegate it or delete it.
[09:36] You need to choose you and what's most important to you and put it in your calendar.
[10:41] A big lesson I've learned is that my to do list will never be done.
[11:11] I challenge you to be ruthless with your time.

What do you do when you're living your life's passion, but you still feel unfulfilled? Expand on that passion. Dr. Jennifer Variste absolutely loves being a pediatrician. She'd dreamt of it since she was a little girl, but she knew that she was meant for more so she set out to find fulfillment.
After medical school, she and her husband settled down outside of Houston, TX, but the pediatric jobs weren't there. Rather than spend all of her time commuting, she set out to build her very own brand. A brand that she takes with her to every job she now gets.
During this time she was also diagnosed with a disorder that caused her scalp to create scar tissue, which affected her ability to grow her hair. A friend of hers was working in a network marketing company that had supplements that could help, so she tried it out.
The pharmaceuticals she was taking were doing some terrible things to her body so she figured what was the harm in trying a natural supplement?
Turns out there was no harm. She now has a full head of natural hair because the supplements worked so well, so she started sharing her story and working within the company. She realized that what she loved about pediatrics was the connection she had with her patient's moms.
What better way to connect than by helping their children while also encouraging them to take care of themselves? Listen in to hear her full story and then take a minute to click below and connect. She is building a beautiful dream and it's one that we can all learn from.
"Go for your dreams, the opinions of others will not give you fulfillment." Dr. Jennifer Variste
In this episode:[02:10] Welcome to the show, Dr. Variste!
[02:37] Dr. Variste shares her background and what she is putting out in the world.
[06:29] Why she chose the word fulfillment.
[09:02] Dr. Variste speaks about her Pediatric practice.
[13:57] Her brand goes with her and it doesn't matter where she practices.
[14:45] Why you shouldn't let fear hold you back.
[18:31] The fear will never go away, it's just a part of the orchestra.
[21:02] How a personal medical condition led to one of the greatest opportunities of her life.
[26:19] There are so many great aspects of having the home business and having her own brand.
[27:40] She connects with her patient's mom, which is where her passion lies.

Uncontrolled anger, lashing out at strangers, a never-ending feeling of exhaustion and overwhelm. Sounds like the perfect recipe for burnout, but when Shang was going through it, she had no clue. Listen as she shares her story and how she's changed her life and mindset to stay out of the pit of burnout today.
Shang was working at a startup, working her own business, in a long-distance relationship, and an avid blogger. She would work to cover up how burnout was making her feel only to find herself sliding deeper and deeper into the pit.
After she moved in with her then boyfriend, it got even worse. She started working a more high-stress job but didn't stop doing any of the other activities, Shang was now simply doing them in a new city.
She knew that there was something going on with her, but she grew up in a family and culture that looked upon therapy and mental health very unfavorably. So instead of initially getting help, she kept on living with the effects of burnout.
There is definitely a light at the end of Shang's story though. She did finally get help and she and her husband persevered. They are now the proud parents of a one year old and are living a much more mentally healthy life. Listen in to hear her entire story.
"After working with my therapist for two years, I came to realize that mental health should be just as important if not more than your physical health." Shang
In this episode:[01:09] Welcome to the show, Shang!
[01:22] Shang shares her story.
[02:12] Listen as Shang discusses what burn out looked like in her life.
[05:03] Shang believes she was burned to a crisp before she realized she was burned out.
[07:45] Shang speaks about when it became unbearable.
[09:08] Healing started with her eating a huge slice of humble pie.
[11:42] Shang talks about some insights she learned from her therapist.
[15:00] Shang discusses creating a simpler life and how they did it.
[19:05] The worst part was cutting back on going out with friends.
[21:56] "A true friend is worth their weight in gold."
[23:02] For Shang, sleep replenishes her.

Now that things with the pandemic are starting to calm down and several of my doctor friends and I have been vaccinated, we decided it was time for a girl's trip. I've done them before but this time around it really hit home that I needed a hike and I needed it with girlfriends.
There ended up being four of us on the trip and these are ladies that I've connected with virtually but haven't met in person. We got together and spent time in nature connecting with each other and ourselves in a way we haven't been able to do for over a year.
So why do you need a hike?
I have broken it down into ten seriously great reasons that going on a girls' trip is good for the heart, mind, and soul! Listen in to hear them all (I've listed them below in the timestamps as well!)
"This trip reminded me that life really does happen outside my own reality." Dr. Errin Weisman
In this episode:
[00:32] Welcome to this super sassy solocast!
[02:48] March 2021, we headed out on a girls hiking trip.
[03:51] It was amazing, we went to Southwest Utah.
[04:26] Everyone should consider taking a friend's trip for these reasons.
[04:30] #1 No kids.
[05:14] #2 The pressure to unplug.
[05:43] #3 Was just the conversation.
[06:12] #4 Life does happen outside my own reality.
[06:50] #5 Real friends don't care.
[07:23] #6 New Nature is cleansing.
[08:16] #7 Traveling reminds me that life is about the journey, not just the destination.
[09:01] #8 Fancy does not equal value.
[09:58] #9 Coming home to family was sweet.
[10:17] #10 This trip reminded me you can take the girl out of the wild, but you can't take the wild out of the girl.
[11:30] The second weekend in May I am doing my Badass Women's Retreat, there are 10 spots open.
[11:53] Your kick of encouragement is to lean into the jealousy, don't push it away and ask yourself what do you want from this solocast?

I have talked about imposter syndrome on the show many times before, but I was having a conversation with my mastermind ladies and someone brought it up in a whole new way. So I knew I had to come on and discuss it again but in a different light.
Part of impostor syndrome is 100% negativity bias. It's our deep brain trying to keep us safe and keep us from taking too many risks with our health and our decisions. However, there's a whole other area of impostor syndrome that is actually a lack of feeling safe in the work environment.
For instance, if you're surrounded by a racist, sexist, toxic group of people who are constantly talking down to you and treating you as less than, wouldn't you feel like you had no place there?
Of course you would. Now I'm not a DEI expert by any means, but this conversation opened my eyes to a new realm of thought regarding our place in the workforce. Generations of trauma have been handed down by the patriarchy and now we have the task of changing the narrative.
Listen in to hear more about the conversation we had, and then reach out! Let me know if you have ever felt unsafe in the workplace?
"Imposter syndrome is feelings of inadequacy despite evident success." Dr. Errin Weisman
In this episode:
[02:25] Welcome to this super sassy solocast about imposter syndrome.
[03:19] Negativity bias is another form of imposter syndrome.
[04:09] I share a conversation I had with a group of ladies in medicine the other day.
[06:32] Think about all the conscious and subconscious ways the patriarchy has made us feel like we don't belong in the room, that we are unsafe.
[09:48] The majority of the time it's looked at like a personnel issue, not an institution issue.
[10:48] Step one to determine whether it's imposter syndrome or an unsafe feeling is having someone you can bounce your thoughts off on in a safe place.
[11:22] The second tip is inclusion.
[11:50] Step three is to keep going.
[14:36] Thank you for listening!
