  • 257: Over-drinking with Angela Mascenik

With the lockdowns and added stress of the pandemic, it's no wonder that alcohol intake has increased. Does this mean that alcoholism has increased or are we dealing with the ramifications of a very destructive coping mechanism?

Angela Mascenik joins me to chat about her journey and why it is rarely about the alcohol itself and all about why you're drinking instead. For many of us, drinking begins at a much earlier age than is recommended or legal.

Our public school systems, diet changes, and increased childhood pressures are likely to blame, but what do we do when drinking becomes our main coping mechanism? For many, this spells a recipe for disaster and addiction.

For Angela it spelled the same. She decided to bring on a coach to help her get to the bottom of her drinking habits and hasn't looked back since. Now she's dedicated to helping others figure out why they drink and if they choose, ways to kick the habit to the curb.

It's funny because we all know how much we can drink and still live a fully healthy life, but so few of us pay any mind to that. We keep on imbibing and keep on giving ourselves excuses for why. But once you get to the bottom of your drinking habit, you may find that you no longer need it.

If you've found yourself taking in more alcohol than you'd like, listen in and learn more about ways to get to the bottom of your reason for drinking.

"It's not about the alcohol, it's about why you are drinking it in the first place." Angela Mascenik

    In this episode:

[02:18] Welcome to the show, Angela Mascenik!

[02:37] Angela discusses the magic she shares with the world.

[05:40] It's not about the alcohol, it's about why you are drinking it in the first place.

[05:55] Listen as Angela shares her journey and struggles with alcohol and her weight.

[09:10] Life coaching changed her entire life.

[11:29] She helps her clients get their energy and feelings in alignment.

[13:28] Angela discusses the first step you can take to figure out why you are drinking or eating or other destructive behaviors.

[15:11] The next step is learning how to feel those uncomfortable feelings you are trying to escape from.

[18:04] Angela wants you to listen to your feelings because they are trying to tell you something.

  • 256: Peer Support with Dr. Susan Wilson

Dr. Susan Wilson has focused on peer support throughout her career, but when she had to quit medicine due to her own medical issues, she realized just how important it is. Listen as she shares her experience and why she's so passionate about peer support and coaching today.

When you're spiraling through grief and depression due to some really terrible medical news, what do you do? If you're a doctor, having the support of your medical peers is extremely important.

This is also the case if you're working in high trauma departments or fields. When it comes down to it, we are on the front lines of some of the worst physically and mentally traumatic experiences that the human body and mind can and do experience.

What does that do to us?

After having to leave practice as an emergency medical physician, Dr. Wilson wanted to continue her work in peer support. She is now a coach and provides acute support for colleagues who are experiencing traumatic events.

She shares her views on the difference between peer support and coaching and why both are an absolute must in the healthcare field. She's also talking about her coaching career and how it has changed since Covid.

If you've ever experienced a traumatic moment in your career then you really won't want to miss this discussion.

"The idea of peer support is more of an acute support or assistance for someone that's really needing help right now. They need something right away to buoy them through the event." Dr. Susan Wilson

    In this episode:

[03:44] Welcome to the show, Dr. Susan Wilson!

[03:56] Dr. Wilson shares her background and what she is doing now.

[11:29] Her practice has changed through the pandemic and the change in patients' needs.

[14:31] Dr. Wilson believes the system's issues need to be addressed, but in the meantime, having peer support in place is so important.

[17:20] The education piece towards organizations is critical, and having an advocate is important.

We all know that female reproductive and general health has always been lower on the totem pole in the medical field. Only in recent years has the narrative begun to change and one of the big players in that is Dr. Teresa Irwin. She's the vaginacologist and she's here to share her story and why she's so passionate about women's health.

So how did she come up with the name the vaginacologist? She didn't! Her 15 year old son was trying to explain what his mother did and came up with it for her, but seriously… isn't that the best title ever?

Teresa now spends her time creating resources for women all over the world to better their reproductive health. She covers everything from properly completing Kegels to the benefits of proper diet and exercise and even performs surgery as a last resort.

In fact, did you know that one of the top women's sports is to blame for incontinence? Not pregnancy?

Listen in to hear about the different types of Kegel exercises and why they matter as well as the reasons you should practice proper positioning for relieving yourself. That's right, you can pee and poop in such a way that makes incontinence worse.

This really was an amazing conversation full of extremely pertinent information that every woman, young or old, needs to hear.

"It's not just about learning about Kegel exercises, a lot of things you do every day just make it worse." Dr. Teresa Irwin

  • 255: Married To An Alpha Female

Did you know that some of our listeners only listen to the Married to an Alpha Female episodes? It's true! Thank you so much to everyone who listens to these because we love doing them.

Okay, now to get into our discussion!

Not much has been going on down on the farm. Craig has been taking grain to market, and no that does not include a horse and buggy, but it has been oddly impacted by Covid. For instance, some of his grain gets shipped to Japan to make beer, but the market has been down due to Covid. Why? Because in Japan they only drink beer at the bar. People don't drink at home. It's crazy how societal differences impact people all over the world.

We also do some scrapping to make money on the side for birthdays, Christmas, traveling, you know, life stuff. These past few months scrap prices have been way down, but lately they've been going back up. Why? Covid.

Again, it's so interesting how our economy is affected by what's happening around the world and here at home.

Listen in to hear all about our son Briar's birthday wish and why we may need to get our kids out of the house more as well as what you can do to empower your Alpha Female. Let us know how you like these episodes and definitely what you'd like to hear more of!

"There are some listeners that only listen to the Married to an Alpha Female episodes." Errin and Craig Weisman

    In this episode:

[02:37] Let's start by listening to what's happening down on the farm with Craig.

[06:39] Errin discusses all the things that come from overseas that have been at a shortage.

[08:25] Listen as they share their recent trip to Olive Garden for Briar's birthday.

[10:23] This time last year they were in Atlanta, Georgia, for a Physicians Coaching Alliance retreat.

[12:47] They both believe that Kansas City will win the Superbowl.

  • 253: Solocast - Student Loans

This is not a political episode… I don't care where you fall on the issue of student loans, but I DO care about how you relate to your student loans. So often I hear people take on personal identifiers when they talk about their student loans. It's as if the loan itself has some sort of hold over our identity.

Things I've heard, and thought, in relation to student loans:

    • If I leave medicine then I'm breaking a promise that I made when I signed the promissory note…
    • If I leave, then I'm weak.
    • If I leave, then how will I pay these back.
    • I got the loans, so I have to stay and suffer until I pay them back.

But here's the thing, your student loans and the officers that manage them, don't have any emotion tied to them. You either pay them back, or you don't. There is no morality in a piece of paper being written to pay for your education.

So I wanted to bring this up because our thoughts around student loans are damaging and in many ways, contribute to the burnout culture that we live in. Just because you have student loans does not mean that you are a bad person or that you deserve to suffer.

Want to hear more? Listen in and start making strides to separate the emotion from the money. Because in the grand scheme of things, that loan is there. You will pay it off. It doesn't matter if you're in medicine, it will get done. But are you willing to give up by focusing on this mountain of debt?

"Somewhere along the way we have made student loans mean something morally about us." Dr. Errin Weisman

    In this episode:

[02:52] Today we are talking about student loans and how they perpetuate your burnout.

[04:14] I want to get into the thoughts we have around student loans because they are damaging.

[06:56] When we are wrestling with the student loan question they are usually wrapped up in, did I make a mistake becoming a doctor?

[10:21] I had a hard time deciding to quit my job with the student loans still hanging over my head until the wonderful Mr. Weisman shared his wisdom.

[11:20] Welcome your thoughts in and invite them to sit down and have a drink.

[12:34] I want you to just do the math and find the facts over the feelings.

[15:32] My last tip is to own it all.

[17:00] Don't be held down by preconceived thought distortions.

    [18:17] Thank you for listening!

  • 251: Solocast - You Can Figure This Out - Self-Trust

You can figure this out. You can honestly figure anything out. Do you ever find yourself thinking that you're a failure and that you've just reached the end of what you can do? Guess what, you haven't.

No matter if things are going right or if things are going wrong, you will be able to figure out the next step. You didn't make it through your residency and all those years of medical school to have absolutely no ability to "figure it out!"

Here's the thing, being successful isn't about having all the things and gaining all the accolades. Being successful is knowing that you trust in yourself and that you will be able to face whatever comes next.

The bumps aren't going to get you because you know that you will find a solution. You don't have to change your life today. You don't have to change your life at all. You can keep doing exactly what you're doing and if you're finding happiness and fulfillment, then that's perfect.

But if you're ready for a change, maybe it's time to come have some conversations with me and the wonderful group that I'm coaching!

"Being successful is having the trust and the faith in yourself that no matter what comes knocking, no matter what bumps into you, you're going to figure it out." Dr. Errin Weisman

    In this episode:

[02:25] Are you ready? It's story time.

[05:06] You can figure it out!

[05:40] I think we all have issues with self-trust.

[07:45] You have solved problems before and you will do it time and time again.

  • 250: Gatekeeper With Dr. Nii Darko

What do you do when a fellow alum is running in similar circles as you? Do a podcast swap! Dr. Nii Darko and I have been in each other's spheres for years, but everything has finally aligned for us to chat about all things business and gatekeepers.

Honestly, this interview was truly amazing. I have been following Dr. Darko's journey for years and it is just so inspiring. Between paying off debt, living a more abundant life, though he wouldn't necessarily call it that, and cultivating a far reaching impact, it has been amazing to watch.

His word today was gatekeeper and it really was the perfect word to describe the changes in our abilities as doctors to reach the public. Even 10 or 15 years ago, you couldn't have reached as many people as intimately because there were gatekeepers everywhere.

Fast-forward to today and it's so much easier for us to not only have a voice, but to be heard as well. It's on us to bring light to the issues in the industry and the profession and it is an honor to be in Dr. Darko's company while doing this myself.

Listen as we chat about our history, our drives, and what it has been like for us to pay off the massive amount of debt incurred to become doctors. We both feel very passionately that we as doctors need to do more both for each other and the public.I'm happy to report, that we certainly are doing the damn thing!

"If you wait until it's perfect, you probably waited too long." Dr. Nii Darko

    In this episode:

[02:51] Welcome to the show, Dr. Darko!

[03:30] Dr. Darko speaks about his podcast Docs Outside The Box.

[06:52] "If you are willing to put your stuff out there and you don't care what the trolls say, that's when you know you are rolling."

[10:29] Listen as Dr. Darko shares why he picked the word gatekeeper.

[12:45] When he realized there was no gatekeeper.

[16:00] Dr. Darko talks about doing extra jobs to get his debt paid off sooner.

[20:26] What I've learned by following Dr. Darko's podcast and his journey.

[24:34] What is a poor mentality?

[27:00] It's learning to not work for money but make money.

  • 249: Solocast - Burnout Destroyed My Faith

Burnout destroyed my faith. There's no other way to say it. Having grown up as a conservative Baptist I fully expected medicine to bring me closer to God. Instead I chafed against beliefs that weren't supported by my experiences and that I had been questioning for a long time.

But burnout took those beliefs and put a huge crack right down the middle of them. I couldn't believe that God wasn't stepping in to help me through some really dark times and everything I'd been told just seemed… ridiculous.

Since coming out of burnout, I've begun building new beliefs and honestly feel like I'm more spiritual than I have ever been. But it was a hard road. I'm digging deep today. Sharing some really dark times and giving some perspective on what it really meant to leave behind beliefs that had been ingrained in me from my first days on Earth.

Now don't get me wrong, I've seen miraculous things happen. I haven't suddenly become an Atheist and believe that there is nothing out there, but the way I believe now is nothing like it was then.

… and burnout is the reason why it all changed.

"I was getting ready to go to work on Monday and the dark, dark cloud of dread was just all over my house and all over me." Dr. Errin Weisman

    In this episode:

[03:37] I share my religious background.

[06:30] Listen as I share how my burnout destroyed my faith.

[08:50] I decided it was time to talk to the pastor, and I share my conversation with Pastor Logan.

[12:28] Pastor Logan changed other things in me. Not all of her ideas were right for me, but she got me implanted in the church.

[15:27] Sitting in the muck allowed me to come to new truths.

[17:35] I speak about what has become my new belief system.

[21:18] I now lean into what feels aligned, real and true to me.

  • 248: Transitioning Millennials with Dr. Elisabeth Fontaine

Our youth are our future, so why don't we do more to help them along in a productive way? When Dr. Elisabeth Fontain asked herself that question, she decided to do something about it. Along with her medical practice she is a coach to up and coming students, early careerists, and physicians and she's sharing why she's so passionate about her work.

Dr. Fontaine is dedicated to creating a norm of healthy living within her community, but also throughout the world. Part of healthy living is taking care of your mental health and understanding your place and purpose in the world. So she has taken what tends to be a health initiative and begun to coach millennials on how to live a more fulfilled life.

Rather than allowing our youth to flounder and "figure it out" like we had to, she's become an advocate for them to help them find their place. She and her business partner work with individuals, parents, and organizations to help them accelerate their transitions in life and their careers.

Listen as she shares more about her background and why she is dedicated to helping millennials to find success. So many of us put millennials down but they've had an unnecessary amount of pressure placed on them while also traversing some of the worst economic times.

Perhaps Dr. Fontaine is on to something with making sure that millennials don't become the "lost" generation?

"We want to help the parents have an organization to recognize the importance of this generation." Dr. Elisabeth Fontaine
