It is okay to say no. It is a complete sentence and it is fully within your right to tell others no when you're being asked to do things that do not serve you. Which is why I'm sharing my tips and tricks for canceling the hustle culture and taking better care of yourself.

It is okay for you to do anything you need to do to protect your peace, safety, freedom, autonomy, and your bank account. You should be prioritizing those people who are meaningful and important in your life. Hint: one of those people should be you.

So it is okay for you to say no.

You also need to drop the excuses. We make so many excuses for why we allow others to impede in our lives and our careers when they have no business being there. Listen as I share my list of excuses that you can no longer use.

It's never too late to make the changes you want to see in yourself and your life. If you're done with the hustle culture and ready to start feeling more fulfilled in your work and life, then listen in and start taking steps to make this life your best life.

  • 236: Stress Relief with Dr. Leslie Koenig

Becoming a doctor means dealing with stress all day every day as you work to help better your patient's lives. As you well know, it starts while you're in school and typically just escalates as you start building out your life and practice. So what's the best way to deal with stress and making sure that you don't reach a place of burnout?

For Dr. Leslie Koenig stress relief equals being mindful of her energy and her brain space and meditating to stay in a place of flow.

She didn't always think that meditation was going to be the key for her. In fact for many years she was extremely skeptical of the practice. But as her stressors increased she found herself looking for a quiet space to just breathe and the meditation techniques that she learned helped move her through.

Listen as she shares her experience being one of the first physicians in her area exposed to Covid and why it was the catalyst for her creating her Stress Relief Survival Guide. This was an amazing conversation with a fantastic physician and person and if you've been feeling the cold claws of stress, you won't want to miss it.

    In this episode:

[01:47] Welcome to the show, Dr. Leslie Koenig!

[02:03] Dr. Koenig shares her background and what she is doing today.

[03:12] Listen as Dr. Koenig speaks about why she chose the stress relief as her words.

[06:36] Dr. Koenig talks about the Stress Relief workbook she wrote.

[09:39] She gives a rundown of the video course she made.

[13:24] We chat about imposter syndrome.

[16:45] Dr. Koenig believes that the focus is on the doctor you need to be instead of the doctor's health.

  • 235: Rules with Dr. Devon Gimbel

Do you ever find yourself looking at life through a lens of rules that you have no memory of creating for yourself? For physicians, but especially female physicians, there are a host of rules that internalize in our lives, but are they really the rules we want to have around our lives?

Dr. Devon Gimbel is one of my business besties and a true friend in this life and she's here to talk about how she kicked her rules to the curb and found a better, more fulfilled life.

So, what are these rules we're talking about? For Devon, one rule was that you never call in sick. If you called in sick as a physician then you were lazy and not serious about your career. She recalls having the worst bout of food poisoning ever and still going into work because she was scared of what others would think.

One of my own rules was that all patients lie, so we have to figure out the real story. Which is actually something that is taught to us in school, but who is that helping and how does that impact our relationship with our patients.

Listen as we chat about the various rules we've had in our careers and what it took for us to realize that other people's rules do not have to dictate our lives. This is a very powerful episode and the conversation continues over in the Patreon group, so if you'd like more, join us there.

"You are never locked in to doing one thing, one way for the rest of your life." Dr. Devon Gimbel

    In this episode:

[01:47] Welcome to the show, Dr. Devon Gimbel!

[02:10] Dr. Gimbel shares her background and what she brings to the world.

[04:58] Listen as she speaks about the rules we set up in our heads.

[11:27] One rule that has permeated my life as a physician.

[14:52] Dr. Gimbel discusses what happens if you decide to step away from clinical medicine.

[17:04] Dr. Gimbel talks about how she coaches people around these rules.

[22:52] She says to get really clear on, what am I doing this for and what am I doing this from?

[25:26] "If it feels like crap, you are probably doing it right."

[26:03] Dr. Gimbel believes that once you are clear, the next step is having your own back.

[30:01] When you challenge your rules, you step out of your zone of safety.

Many of us go through life believing that we either have innate confidence or we don't, but what if being confident was really a skill that you develop over time? There have been years of studies that suggest most human beings and women in particular, develop confidence rather than simply having it.

Listen as Dr. Beth Pedersen and Dr. Debrah Wirtzfeld share how they started working in the field of professional confidence and why it is so important to them.

As Covid began to bare its ugly head, both Beth and Debrah realized that they needed to take their executive coaching to a new level. Many professionals were lost in a sea of impostor syndrome and they knew that they could help.

They've developed specific tips and processes to help professional women find their strengths and use those to develop their confidence as a whole. Because women in all areas of the workforce need to build and understand their strengths and reveal their confidence within.

  • 233: Solocast - Winter is Coming

Winter time and the holidays in particular are not necessarily happy times for everyone. No matter if you've lost someone or if the holidays just always trigger anxiety and depression, there are ways to combat the triggers. Listen in to hear my four tips to make this the best winter ever.

First up, lower your obligations. Feeling like you're obligated to do certain things is the leading cause of anxiety, but are you TRULY obligated? No. This year especially there will likely be a reduction of your "responsibilities" during the holiday season. Make a list of all of your normal obligations and start marking off the ones that you can.

Reducing the load of obligations is the first step to having a much better holiday season.

Next, reduce the size of your expectations. Rome wasn't built in a day and you can't have holiday celebrations in five different places in a day either. At least not in an enjoyable way. Stop expecting the world of yourself in this time and make realistic goals!

And don't forget to go on some adventures. The winter time is a great time to reconnect with nature. It may be chilly outside, but there are fewer bugs and fewer plants that could cause you issues. Take a hike, chop down a tree, go on a safe road trip. Make time to have fun.

Listen in to hear my last tip because it really is the best of the bunch! The winter time and the holidays are stressful, but they don't have to be so overwhelming. How are you making the most of this time?

"White space is a time of just being and experiencing, not doing." Dr. Errin Weisman

    In this episode:

[05:12] I'm sharing tips on how to make this the best winter ever.

[05:24] Lower your obligations is the first tip.

[07:23] Tip #2 is have bite size expectations.

[08:36] Have winter adventures is tip #3.

[10:23] Tip #4 make this a time of growth, rest, recovery and restoration.

  • 232: Flexibility with Suzie Brown

Coming out of one fellowship and looking at starting into the process of another, Suzie Brown felt trapped. She'd spent her life pursuing medicine but never found the fulfillment she thought she'd feel. Instead, she's found comfort, solace, and peace in creating music.

Suzie has been involved with music her whole life, but her dream was medicine. She specialized in cardiology and found herself on the long path toward cardiac research and clinical medicine. But when she felt like winning another grant was the equivalent of a prison sentence, she knew that she needed a new plan.

She decided to work part-time at a local hospital and really work on her music. And she's still doing the same today. She's been able to build quite the body of musical work while still impacting the world through her work in cardiology.

Listen as she shares her story and why this path has been the best for her. She also digs into why flexibility is so important to her, now more than ever, but really has always had a place in her life.

If you've always felt called to do something for your soul, then this is the episode for you.

"More than any other time in my life, I didn't care what they thought because I had clarity about what I needed to be happy." Suzie Brown

  • 231: Married to An Alpha Female

It's been a while friends. Things have been crazy down on the farm, but Craig and I finally had a moment to sit down and record another Alpha Female episode! Get ready to hear all the updates for the Weisman family!

First up, Craig is talking about the harvest. As usual we have too much grain for the size of our operation so things are quite hectic. It doesn't help that he got into an accident as well. Listen in to hear all about it. I'm definitely looking forward to the harvest being over so I can have my husband back!

We're continuing on with "Things Craig Doesn't Know!" But first, did you know that we recently got some kittens? We were supposed to only have 2 but we ended up with 4 and they're all healthy and sweet. But what I didn't expect and what Craig doesn't know is that I think I'm an ambi-pet lover.

That's right. I'm no longer JUST a dog lover. Keep listening to hear all the other things Craig doesn't know this week.

Did you know that no matter how "together" your Alpha Female's life seems to be, that she's still scared of rejection? It's true! In many ways we are all scared of rejection, but for the Alpha Female in your life, that means that she is less likely to reach out when she needs help. So take time to reach out to her!

"Even though your alpha female kicks ass and takes names we are still all fearful of rejection." Dr. Errin Weisman

    In this episode:

[01:48] Craig starts out with his down on the farm segment discussing harvest.

  • 230: Passive Income with Dr. Jeffrey Anzalone

One thing we don't learn in medical school is how to run a business. Which means that we don't learn about investing and creating new income streams. For Dr. Jeffrey Anzalone this became a problem, right out of school.

The job that he thought was his was ripped out from under him which left him with a 2 month old, $300k in debt, a new home loan, and no way to pay anything. He did get back on his feet, but he realized how important it was to address the huge amounts of debt that doctors take on to learn about their field.

It wasn't until he injured his right hand many years later that he realized the impact of not having multiple income streams. He was faced with his own mortality and knew that he wouldn't necessarily always be able to provide with his main income.

Listen as he shares his journey into learning more about passive income and creating multiple income streams. This concept is so important for all adults but very important for doctors.

Have you considered a way to build passive income into your life?

"Everybody is walking around with a problem and if you can figure out a solution to that problem and it's something that you like, that's where you need to start." Dr. Jeffrey Anzalone

  • 229: Be Happy Now Masterclass on Boundaries

Boundaries are important for life. We need them in our relationships, in our work, and with ourselves so that we can maintain a healthy lifestyle and mindset. In October's "Be Happy Now Masterclass" we talked all about boundaries and what we can do to make them stronger.

For so many people, doctors especially, the concept of having healthy boundaries is foreign. But they're imperative to a healthy career and a healthy life. So how do you go about evaluating your own boundaries and building them back up?

First, take a moment and do a self assessment. Do you tend to overshare? Is TMI your middle name? Then you likely have loose boundaries and you need to work on shoring them up. On the flip side, do you ever feel like there's a force field around you, your emotions, and your ability to talk to others? Then it's time to bring your boundaries back down.

Listen as I share the seven most important things to remember about boundaries and the nine steps to take to improve yours. Your boundaries are meant to keep you healthy and sane, not isolate you from the world around you.

After you've listened to this masterclass, take a moment and sign up for the November masterclass. We're going to be talking all about frustrations and the healthy way to experience them and let them go. Will you be there?

"No, is a complete sentence." Dr. Errin Weismann

    In this episode:

[03:11] The ladies in the class share what they are doing.

  • 228: You Are Not Broken with Dr. Tonya Caylor

If you're a full fledged doctor who has completed all of your residency rounds, do you remember the days of residency? If you're a resident, do you ever feel like you're simply surviving day to day? You don't have to live like that. Dr. Tonya Caylor is a resident wellness advocate and she's sharing her thoughts on changing the practice of residency.

While overall the residency period is important, it's not practical to run people into the ground for a calling. Most doctors and nurses will say that they've been called to medicine and that helping others is simply in their DNA, why would our current system want to cull that out of us.

Dr. Caylor has been focusing on residency wellness and supporting residents nationwide to understand their rights and their responsibility to themselves. You see, it is irresponsible to suggest that the pace and requirements of residency are necessary to become a good doctor.

Experiencing various rotations and having a better understanding of the variety of ways doctors affect patient lives is a requirement. Because a well rounded doctor is a much better doctor.

Listen as Dr. Caylor shares her thoughts on resident wellness and why it is so important. She also reminds us why it is so important to take time off when necessary and to quell the negative self-talk we all indulge in. You are a badass, it's time you believed it too!

"We have to let go of perfectionism and we've got to get rid of the self doubt." Dr. Tonya Caylor

    In this episode:

[04:18] How she is supporting resident wellness.

[07:51] Dr. Caylor shares what she wants residents to know.
