  • 217: Authenticity with Dr. Jessie Benson

Perfectionism isn't always a good thing. Especially when it holds you back from your dreams because you're so scared of failure that you're too afraid to try something new. Dr. Jessie Benson was living that life until she realized that she needed to be more authentic to herself and her dreams.

Finally realizing what was holding her back from her happiness was just the first step in a very long journey toward realizing her happiness. But it was the word authenticity that started her on the path and it was letting the fear drop away that kept her going.

Your value is not found in what you can achieve.

Listen as Dr. Benson and I dig deep into why she became a doctor, what she's doing now, and why her goal in life is simply to enjoy life. We only get one of them after all. She's now a life coach and a professional artist while managing her homestead.

Now that she isn't shackled with fear she's truly living her life. Dr. Benson shares all about her adventures, the new things she's tried, and why she's so happy to have found art in all its forms. I cannot wait for you to hear this inspiring episode, so listen in and bring a pen and paper.

  • 216: Black Beauty with J.N.C (Necessary with Nena Wallace & Dr. Candice Williams)

You are beautiful just the way you are. These are not words that women of color hear very often in popular culture and many times not even within their own culture. Nena Wallace, Candice Williams, and Jasmine Colbert created the Black Beauty Project and even created and produced their own single, also called Black Beauty.

It all started as a dream. Candice fell asleep one night while thinking about all of the issues with the world today. Specifically, what led to the deaths of George Floyd and Brianna Taylor (as well as all of the others) and as she dreamed she felt as if God was there, telling her, "Black people are beautiful. You ARE beautiful."

She woke up and immediately started writing the song. All three of these amazing women have been involved in music in the past but none were prepared for what was to come. As they dug deeper into the message that they were revealing with their song, they realized this was a movement.

They created the Black Beauty Project together and now seek to elevate a positive message of acceptance and love for all men and women of color. You are no less due to the color of your skin and these three women are here to tell you just that.

"As Black women they are standing up to declare the beauty and dignity of Black people everywhere." Click here to listen to their song and support this wonderful message.

    In this episode:

[01:47] Welcome to the podcast, Nena and Candice!

[02:18] Candice speaks about her life and the changes she has recently made.

[03:45] Nena shares why she picked the word necessary.

[04:58] They discuss how the Black Beauty Project got started.

[06:47] Candice speaks about how she and Nena reconnected before the project.

[09:01] Candice shares how she was inspired to write the song.

[11:58] The project has become a way to make music and share it with people.

[13:33] Nena believes that God brought her Candice and Jasmine together to make music.

[17:02] Nena speaks about the success of the project and where it's going from here.

[18:26] Candice shares what she is getting from the project.

[21:32] Candice says that they wrote the song before the pandemic and social unrest.

[22:20] Errin challenges all the listeners to listen to the song and find what emotions it stirs up in you.

[22:42] Thank you so much for being on the show!

[23:27] Errin shares her kick of encouragement.

"What touched me the most was that people were emotionally being touched by it and that let me know that with the little talent I have that I can touch people." Dr. Candice Williams

  • 215: Well-Being with Brenda Thompson

Why are physicians much more likely to experience burnout than other professions? Brenda Thompson has worked in various roles throughout her experience in Graduate Medical Education. Everything from accreditation specialist to GME manager to wellness and transition trainer. She's the first to tell you that the reason we experience burnout is the systemic disregard for physicians as human beings.

These days residents are no longer putting their lives on hold to make it through all the requirements needed to become doctors. They're getting married, having children, and realizing that there is nothing wrong with living their lives. But the medical profession has not caught up.

Instead, these residents are facing endless 80hr weeks, ongoing education, homes, families, and all the stresses inherent to practicing in their field. Mind you, their field may or may not be what they're passionate about if they were improperly matched.

Brenda may not be a doctor, but she has seen what doctors go through and has been working on the inside to try and change the system.

This conversation was an amazing deep-dive into various facets of the typical physician's life both personally and professionally and why things need to change. There's no better place to start than with physician education. Listen in and learn ways that you can start making a difference in your organization.

    In this episode:

[01:29] Brenda shares a little about herself and her job.

[03:43] Listen as Brenda speaks about the struggle ACGME is having around wellness.

[07:23] Why the rules for training physicians need to change with the times.

[11:03] What is depersonalization and what does it mean in the medical field?

[13:22] Learn more about match ranking and how it can be manipulated.

[18:01] Hear about the statistics involving physician suicide.

[20:10] Brenda discusses why she studied transpersonal studies psychology.

[24:47] Why somatic therapy and creative art therapy are two of Brenda's favorite modalities.

[27:57] Errin shares her kick of encouragement.

"You can't expect a physician to work 80 hours a week, every week, and also take care of their studies and families." Brenda Thompson

  • 214: Powerful with Sabrina Runbeck

Why do we push ourselves beyond what a normal human being can stand? Why do we work and work regardless of the state of our own mental and physical health? Because we're doctors. Because we already have all the medical knowledge so we must know better right?

    Wrong!

Pushing ourselves to try and be superhuman is not what makes us powerful. Instead rebooting your mental immunity, eliminating saboteurs, and creating momentum with your new habits is how to take back your power.

Listen as Sabrina shares an exercise you can use to take mini-vacations and allow your brain to rest and re-energize. We have to reduce our internal stress levels or we are all going to be riddled with diseases at extremely early ages.

If you're not taking care of yourself then you cannot show up for the people who are relying on you. Sabrina's techniques for re-evaluating your life and values so that you can find more alignment between your work and your health.

This was an amazing conversation! I love meeting other people who know how important this work is and also share that knowledge with the world.

    In this episode:

[01:48] Welcome to the podcast, Sabrina!

[02:02] Learn more about her background and where she is today.

[04:16] Why she chose the word "powerful."

[07:59] She talks about feeling stress and the statistics about suicide with medical staff.

[10:39] How she went back to training to regain her passion for her career.

[11:55] Why coaching is so important.

[12:48] Life changes, and so do your passions.

[15:09] Rebooting mental immunity is Sabrina's number one focus.

[16:09] Eliminating internal saboteurs is the second step.

[17:10] Sabrina does two to five-minute exercises, which allow her to take mini-vacations.

[18:13] Step three is creating momentum.

[20:40] Connect with Sabrina and learn where to find her freebies.

  • 213: Overwhelm with Dr. Michelle Chestovich

Overwhelm hits us from all sides, but when you're a doctor, how do you process it? You've got your patients, your family, continuing education, insurance debates… obviously I could keep talking, but how do you move past the overwhelm and find joy in life again?

Dr. Michelle Chestovich found herself asking these exact same questions and after listening to a podcast episode had an epiphany. The way you feel about your life is solely in your hands. If you no longer want to feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders, then stop feeling like you need to take that weight on.

So much of our overwhelm and anxiety stems from our need to control every facet of our lives, when really, we have no control! You can only adjust how you perceive and react to various situations. This conversation was perfect for the year that we're having what with the pandemic and all the social changes that are happening. Overwhelm seems to be on everyone's minds, but wouldn't feel amazing to realize that you don't have to stay there?

Listen in to hear how Dr. Chestovich overcame her overwhelm and how she's helping other women do the same. Be the creator of your own story and stop allowing your mind to keep you from enjoying all there is in life.

    In this episode:

[08:44] How she's now helping women who are going through the same things.

  • 212: Allies with Dr. Shika Dooley

Being a female physician comes with a slew of problems that has nothing to do with doctoring. Being a female physician of color is a whole other conversation. Dr. Shika Dooley joins me to start that conversation and I invite you to continue it.

For Dr. Dooley, and all the physicians just like her, there is not much more they can do on their own to bring awareness to their plight. They've had protests. They've kneeled. They've started the conversation, but as she says, it's now up to us to carry the torch.

She founded the Thrive Together Conference for physicians and aspiring-physicians of color to have a safe space to share their stories. She encourages white physicians to join them so that they too can hear the stories and become proponents of the cause.

This is why she chose the word Allies for this conversation. She needs other women to stand up and help carry the banner of change for them. I am happy to be her ally and I invite you to do the same. Doctor Me First is giving away 5 seats for the Thrive Together Conference.

If you're interested in becoming an ally yourself, email me and join the conference.

"The only way that you can know what other people are doing is by hearing their story." Dr. Shika Dooley

  • 211: Burnout Climb-Out with Dr. Brian Young

When you have as impactful a conversation as this one, it doesn't matter if the person is male or female; it must be shared. Which is why I'm doing another Patreon exclusive episode. Listen as Dr. Brian Young shares his journey with burnout, and if you want to hear the entire story, stop on over and check out the Patreon group.

Dr. Young struggled with burnout before it even had a name. He came out of a surgical residency feeling completely overwhelmed and questioning whether he wanted to even be a doctor. There were some twists and turns from there but he ended up working as a doctor in the E.R. and his burnout intensified from there.

Since this was before burnout was a recognized problem in the medical community, Dr. Young didn't know where to turn to get help, so he turned to the bottle. He began drinking at all times during the day and night and was even going to work under the influence.

When someone smelled alcohol on him, the hospital required that he attend AA or he would lose his license.

Listen in to hear all about his story and why being caught under the influence at work ended up being one of the best things that ever happened to him. He's doing great work these days and is still working in the medical field, but no longer as a doctor. Instead, he's making doctor's lives easier through informatics.

You truly won't want to miss the end of this conversation, so click here and get your butt in the Patreon group!

"I realized I had tools and skills, but I needed to figure out how to use them in a different context." Dr. Brian Young

  • 210: Resentment with Caitlin Donovan

Sometimes we need to go fringe to get out of our heads. Caitlin Donovan uses Chinese medicine to help her clients get out of the pit of depression and burnout. She has traveled a windy path to find her current career. We chat about a variety of topics that all come back to the overall theme, we all heal differently. Do what's right for you!

As Caitlin says, there is still a bit of magic in this world. We have to harness it and help each other see more of it. She herself is truly a piece of that magic. Using Chinese medicine and acupuncture, she has seen people completely transform their lives.

But at the heart of it all is the beauty of the placebo effect. In all medicine, alternative or traditional, 30% of the healing process stems from the placebo. What does that mean? Taking the time and making the space for yourself to heal is just as important as which methods you use.

Caitlin shares a story about a man in China who had a massive stroke. They had to remove part of his skull because the blood clot was so large and he could no longer walk. Through intense acupuncture treatment, he was back on his feet within 30 days. In the United States, he would have been wheelchair-bound.

So, do you believe in the magic behind healing? Listen in to hear all about Caitlin's studies and stories and then take a minute to download her resentment journal. Everyone talks about practicing gratitude, but what if the first step is releasing resentment?

"Emotions are fine. It's ignoring the emotions that are problematic." Caitlin Donovan

    In this episode:

[02:01] It's great to have you back on the show, Caitlin!

  • 209: Pediatric Complexity & COVID with Dr. Stella Evans

There are so many aspects to complex pediatric care that most doctors tend to shy away from the practice. Caring for the most innocent of lives takes a toll no matter who you are or what your motivation. This became even more true when Dr. Stella Evans had her son.

She was drawn to complex pediatrics for many reasons but when she had her son she realized that she needed to help support other parents facing the same problems as herself. She has worked to make sure that she approaches every parent with empathy and care.

Because that's exactly what she needed herself when it was her own son.

Her work has become even more complex in the face of Covid-19. Her son was meant to graduate this year and he was going to attend an amazing transitional school that would help prepare him for life in college. However, he is not able to wear a mask for long periods of time and therefore cannot ride public transportation.

Listen as we chat about various facets of complex pediatrics and why this population and those that support them have been hit hard by the pandemic. Dr. Stella is a beacon of hope during this time, and this conversation was truly amazing. You won't want to miss it.

Back by popular demand… Our Married to an Alpha Female episode! Craig and I sat down to chat about everything from back to school, the things he doesn't know, what's happening on the farm and why farmer suicide is on the rise.

I won't lie, it was late, I was tired, and we had a fairly jumpy conversation but you're getting a great inside look at what it means to be in the Weisman household. The kids and I have been having some awesome conversations as well and we chat all about that too.

We also got some new barstools! Yay! New furniture. Most importantly, Craig had no idea that there is a Patreon group, that we have different episodes there, that the music is different and that for some reason my book has stalled out in publication. We've chalked it up to us both being crazy busy working, but I think I'm liking this new segment.

Listen in for your monthly dose of what is going on behind the scenes with the Weisman's and let us know if there are any conversations you'd prefer to have a non-doctor, male voice attached to!

[01:56] The kids are back to school and it's been a bit crazy.

[03:54] Suddenly realizing that I place less emphasis on my past achievements than I used to.

[07:30] Because those achievements aren't what will matter when I get to the end.
