As a mother, do you ever feel like you're doing it wrong? Trust me, we've all felt that way. But what if you were the only one your kids had? What if you were a single mom and a physician? How would you ever move past the mom guilt and the expectations?
Dr. Leslie Cadet has been there, done that, and now she's coaching other single mothers how to do the same. After leaving an abusive relationship, she knew that nothing would ever be the same. She changed her physician specialty to occupational health and she made her dreams work.
She has learned the value of having strict schedules and really pouring into her children when she's with them. Then she leaves her own stuff to the time around her mommy time. Listen as she shares how she structures her day and why it's so important to have time for self-care.
Dr. Cadet is also sharing why she moved into coaching and how she's been helping single mothers all over the country to find their footing again. She's so passionate about helping women realize that we are all doing our best. How you mother your children will look completely different from how another woman mothers theirs. And there is nothing wrong with that.
We are sharing all the encouragement that mothers everywhere need to hear. Plus an extra special dose for those of you doing it all on your own. If you have ever felt like you're drowning in the experience of motherhood, then you won't want to miss this episode.
"You are in this lane where you have perceived notions of what motherhood is supposed to be when you have the power to make that definition for yourself." Dr. Leslie Cadet

Living authentically and being yourself are not always the easiest things to do in this world. Sometimes being you and making choices that make you happy is the hardest thing you'll ever do. But according to Dr. Toni Liu, it's also one of the most rewarding.
Secretly, Dr. Liu has always wanted to be a cartoonist, but she was scared to share that part of herself with the world. While experiencing burnout in her medical career, she found herself drawn back to art and began creating again. This led her to realize that her true passion was no longer to be a doctor, if it ever was.
She then started using her art to educate her patients and make it very easy to remember some of the more important details of female health. Now she's a life coach helping to spread the reality of living a life that is true to your dreams, passions, and beliefs.
Dr. Liu is also looking forward to traveling the world and living the nomad life. Her love of people is so obvious as she speaks and her desire to document the similarities between humans all over the world is inspiring.

You cannot do for others unless you first prioritize yourself. While we hear that everywhere, Dr. Felecia Sumner is helping her patients and her family understand it at a whole new level. Listen as she shares her story and how she found her way to DPC.
It didn't take long for Dr. Sumner to realize that a typical corporate practice was not the right fit for her or her family. After working in an understaffed clinic and finding herself sitting in her car, dreading the idea of going into work, she knew there had to be something different.
She created her own Direct Primary Care practice and set her family free from the bonds of corporate practice. She's also an Amazon best-selling author and her book, Fill Your Cup, is all about properly caring for yourself first. Because it's true, "you cannot pour from an empty cup."
The change from corporate to direct has helped her keep a modicum of sanity in these crazy pandemic times, and has helped her be more present with her family. But her biggest reason for creating a DPC is that she is able to serve her patients and her community in a way that creates lasting health.
She is a wellness strategist and is determined to get to the root cause of illness rather than prescribing medication after medication that impedes health. Listen and learn more about prioritizing your happiness for the benefit of others.
"You cannot pour from an empty cup. It's really tough for you to give out to other people if you're not feeding and replenishing and nourishing yourself." Dr. Felecia Sumner

Have you ever heard of Direct Primary Care providers? Neither had doctors Rachael Holliday and Lindsay Moore-Ostby, but when they did it changed their lives. Listen as they share their stories of burnout and how finding DPC has helped them take back their careers.
Lindsay and Rachael worked together in their previous practice. Unfortunately however they were at the mercy of their shareholders and the powers that be in their billing and patient care practices. (As are most of us right?)
They realized very early on that the way medicine and practice were being done was what was causing their burnout but they had no clue how to get out of it. At their lowest they'd both recognized why physicians often take their lives. Neither of them truly considered it for themselves, but even recognizing why it was appealing scared them both.
Later they found out about DPC and thought it was too good to be true. It wasn't until they met other doctors doing the same thing that they realized this new method of patient care could work for them.
They buckled down and found a way to create their own DPC clinic and are now happier than ever. They can doctor their patients the way they want to. They can answer their own phones and really make connections with their patients. Both Lindsay and Rachael have now realized their original goal in pursuing medicine. To better the lives and health of others.
This was an amazing conversation with two brilliant primary care physicians. If you've been looking for a way out without leaving the dream of doctoring, you need to hear this. If you'd like to learn more, don't be afraid to reach out and see how you too can make DPC work for you.
"As doctors we're really good at jumping through hoops. We spent decades...learning how to play the game. How to get the grade. How to do what you have to do just to get to the next stage." Dr. Lindsay Moore-Ostby
In this episode:
[00:29] Welcome back friends!
[01:57] I'm so excited to welcome Rachael and Lindsay to chat about nonconformity.
[05:11] Learn more about their "Matrix" moment.
[07:46] Rachael shares more about their journey toward creating a better system.
[10:36] Lindsay digs deep into one of her worst burnout experiences.
[13:43] How the physician patient relationship started to break down.
[15:39] They've unplugged the Matrix and are now direct primary care doctors. Learn more.
[18:10] Why switching to DPC has been amazing for their health and happiness.
[21:22] It's not just primary care that's leaving the system.
[23:52] Primary care doesn't have to be astronomically expensive.
[25:53] DPC is an amazing nonconforming physician led movement to take back medicine.

Have you ever felt as if your worth is solely equated by your achievements? That you're only as good as the work you do and the people you help? You're not the only one. Most physicians feel that way, but that feeling is not the truth. Jessie Wei joins me to chat about what it means to remember who you are, not what you've done.
Jessie is a former OB-Gyn who has spent her career helping women to bring life into this world. Her focus and dedication made her the number one person to call in life threatening emergencies, but what it was doing to her mental health was terrible.
After battling severe depression and anxiety and realizing that medications were simply making her symptoms worse, she started to research what it means to be healthy. She is now registered as a Functional Medicine doctor and is helping others find the root cause of their health issues.
Listen as she shares her story and why changing her mindset of worth from achievement to simply being here has changed her life. You are not worthy because of any external action, you are worthy because you are here.
If you're ready to Be Happy Now, then join us at this month's Masterclass and learn all the things about boundaries. Also check out Jessie's new book that's releasing this winter, Physician Care For Thyself Pre-Order.

There is no one right path for physicians in medicine. The medical field is made up of so many more puzzle pieces than simply being a clinician and the field overall benefits when doctors choose to take on non-clinical careers. No one knows this better than Dr. Jawaria Suhail.
She was born in Pakistan and raised in Saudi Arabia with only one professional path available to her. She was going to become a doctor. She was sent to boarding school with a very tiny support system. Later she was put through an arranged marriage and then moved to the states.
Through this time she also had twin boys and started to look for medical careers here in the United States. It wasn't until she was going through her divorce and realized that she was truly depressed that she knew she needed a change. Due to the stigma around mental health in relation to practicing physicians she turned to coaching.
She is now a medical director for an insurance company, a life coach, and she handles telemedicine and home visits. She is truly the queen of career transitions and she's made them all with grace and passion.
Listen as she shares her journey and why she's so extremely happy with her career transitions and her life. She has such an inspirational story that you won't want to miss it.
"I don't have to stay in this story anymore, I am not alone in this anymore and I am not the only woman who feels this way." Dr. Jawaria Suhail

Menopause is more than hot flashes and night sweats. It affects every woman differently and can have symptoms that range from anxiety to memory loss to depression. Why is it that women physicians who are making this transition know very little about the condition?
Dr. Beverly Joyce has studied female anatomy her entire medical career. She has been in gynecology and obstetrics for many years but it wasn't until she too was going through menopause that she realized how little even she knew about it.
In fact, rather than believing she was going through menopause she truly believed she had dementia and was falling into the grips of alzheimers. She's here to share more about this poignant transition in a woman's life and what she is doing to help educate women everywhere.
Listen as we chat about how hormones can impact menopause and certain additional conditions that it may cause. We also discuss the transitions that have impacted her life and how she became the Menopause coach!
If things have been feeling off and you're within that age range, it may be time to see if you are going through this transition as well. Just remember that it's a normal part of life and you're not going crazy! Dr. Beverly said so!

Craig and I are back to talk about all the things going on behind the scenes on the home front. First up is our trek into birthday land. Every year we make it a point to have a huge celebration for every one of the birthdays coming up each year. For pretty much all of Fall and Winter it's a birthday every few weeks and we love it!
Another thing we're loving is Craig's role as the Director of Merchandise for Burntout to Badass. It's not the easiest role as he's found out recently. Several of our mugs have arrived completely destroyed. He's learning the tricks of the trade.
You're not going to want to miss this edition of "Things Craig Doesn't Know." Seriously...it's pretty awesome. (If you think having a broken lawn mower that is beyond repair is awesome that is…) But it was one of those…"how did you not know this" moments.
Craig and I have a blast doing these Married to an Alpha Female episodes. It's so much fun to sit down and just talk out some of the things that are going on and give you a peek behind the scenes. Let us know if you love them as much as we do! We'd love any feedback on what you'd like us to talk about or what you'd like to know (so long as it's appropriate!)
We don't mind a curse here and there but we do love our privacy! You ask and you may receive... but it never hurts to ask!
In this episode:
[01:33] It's getting cold in Northern Indiana, but it won't spoil the birthday fun for the kids.
[04:20] Craig has taken on a new job! Director of Merchandise for the Burntout to Badass course.
[06:32] Things Craig doesn't know...and they're juicy!

Mental health is one of the most important areas of our overall health, especially for physicians. But the stigma surrounding mental health has many doctors hiding behind burnout rather than find a solution to the underlying problem. While that may not be all of us, it certainly is many.
Dr. Michelle Curtin is passionate about helping young clinicians to understand the difference and to get their life and careers back on track from the beginning. Listen as she shares how you can keep a clear gauge on your feelings and emotions around your job and how to pull back.
Michelle credits her ability to move and shift as she's changed positions for helping her to build the support system that's kept her grounded. She came out of residency completely burned out and she realized it was due to the fact that she'd left her friendships and relationships behind. Once she found them again, she experienced a huge change in her mindset.
What is most concerning to both Dr. Michelle and myself is the number of people who associate the symptoms of depression with burnout. She recently gave a talk to medical students about the prevalence of pediatric depression and the questions she received all had to do with burnout.
There is a difference between burnout and depression. While one may lead to the other and vice versa, they require very different types of treatment. If you've been struggling with the difference between the two, then this is an episode you won't want to miss.
In this episode:
[01:28] Welcome to the podcast, Dr. Curtin!
[01:43] Hear about her background and what she is doing now.
[02:58] How she found her way as a young clinician.
