  • 247: Solocast - Throw Away Your Gratitude Journal and Busy Work

When I was in the pit of burnout, having one more thing to do or focus on was the absolute last thing I needed. So many people talked about gratitude journaling and focusing on goals and creating vision boards… but I couldn't even focus on things that were right in front of me. Are you drowning in burnout? This is for you!

Have you ever been told you should start a gratitude journal and your first thought was, yes… that will make me feel better. Then you don't do it and you feel guilty for not acknowledging the things you're grateful for?

Stop! There is no "busy work" technique that is going to magically wash away your burnout. There is also no one way to truly get out of the pit of burnout. But giving yourself one more thing to do is certainly not going to help you.

Listen as I share my experiences and what it took to make me realize that the things others were pushing on me were actually making my burnout worse. If you're there, then listen close and give yourself some grace!

"If you are feeling great, you've already figured out how to have joy and invite gratitude in." Dr. Errin Weisman

    In this episode:

[00:32] I am so excited you are with me today!

[02:45] Let me tell you why I think you need to throw away your gratitude journal.

[05:14] It's okay not to do a daily gratitude journal!

[08:50] I want you to try a resentment journal.

[09:35] I really believe that feelings are emotions are sign posts for unmet needs and wants.

[11:00] Listen as I share my definition of toxic positivity and give some examples of what I mean.

[14:15] When we give a compassionate response, it feels more meaningful.

    [16:45] Thank you for listening!

  • 246: 4thTrimester Renaissance with Dr. Sonal Patel

When it comes to postnatal care, the United States healthcare system has a lot of catching up to do. The fact that we have one of the highest maternal and infant death rates of any 1st world country is evidence of that. Dr. Sonal Patel recognized this fact and is doing her part to serve new moms and babies in her community to the highest standard.

Dr. Patel has built an in-home private postpartum care practice that sees mom and baby together, in the comfort of their own home. She has taken the 4th trimester by the horns and made sure that the stress of having just had a baby and all that comes with it is lessened significantly.

That isn't where she started though. Listen as she shares her story and why she realized that holistic postpartum care was her calling.

The maternal mortality rate is a significant indicator of the health of a nations' economy. Why our country isn't more focused on the health and wellness of our moms is a mystery, but we as doctors can certainly make it more of a priority.

Listen in to learn everything you've wanted and needed to know about the 4th trimester and how we as doctors play a part in making it a better experience for new moms in our communities.

  • 245: Solocast - What's The Difference Between Grind and Hustle Culture and Working Toward Your Goals

Did you know that there's a huge difference between grinding and hustling and actually working toward your goals? I'm sharing the difference and how many of us use our work to escape everything else. It's an addiction and it's time to quit.

I started working on a new book and it really inspired me to get to the root of this issue that I have with overworking. It's a problem that I've had since I was very young. I was driven and if I wasn't moving and going and succeeding at something then I was devastated.

But that's not how we're supposed to live our lives. Hustle is not the way to success. It is a one-way ticket to burnout town and life of dissatisfaction. Which is why I'm sharing my tips on quitting the hustle and leaving work in its proper place.

Listen in to hear why time blocking and accurately estimating your time blocks are both extremely important. Wherever your "work" blocks are in your schedule, do the work for the time you've allotted and then walk away.

Don't forget to schedule in some white space into your calendar. If you don't schedule it in, it won't happen. So put it on your schedule and make it non-negotiable.

These tips really will help you see a whole new side to life. Don't believe me? Just try it and let me know what you think and how you FEEL!

"I'm here to be a voice in a conversation, not the guru." Dr. Errin Weisman

    In this episode:

[08:16] Hear a segment from the book she is working on.

[10:31] Working has always been her addiction and her drug.

[13:45] Listen as I share my tips for transitioning from a hustle system into achieving your goals in a sustainable way.

[13:55] Tip #1 is time blocking.

[15:57] Tip #2 accurately estimating your time blocks.

[17:05] Tip #3 do your work, and when the time in your time block is up, walk away.

[18:24] Tip #4 you must have time in your schedule for white space, fun and pleasure, and sleep.

    [23:44] Tip #5 delegate.

What do we do when the big "D" comes calling? We persevere and manage to do our absolute best for anyone who is impacted by the fallout. • 243: Married To An Alpha Female - Down on the Farm Field Tile

It's the last episode of 2020 and Craig and I wanted to do it together. There has been a lot going on this year in general so it felt right to end it all with just us, talking about the family, and things we've learned along the way. Listen in to hear the last Married to an Alpha Female episode of 2020.

First up, Craig and I dig into what's happening down on the farm. Honestly, it's pretty darn interesting. The harvest is officially over and now it's time to do an evaluation of the land. Which plots yielded more, which less, and why. Plus Craig is prepping for the rainy season and making sure that the ground is equipped to slough off excess.

This land has been in Craig's family for generations and it's crazy how we put our marks on it in such a permanent way that years later we know what happened back then. This is a deep dive into farming and it's super neat.

Then we move into Things Craig Doesn't Know. There really isn't a ton but some of it is important...and fun! Things like what the kids are getting for Christmas. Nope...Craig doesn't know. And what's coming up next in my business and practice. Some of that he was aware of.

We make it a point not to have to share every detail of our lives because we trust each other. We're in this as a partnership for life, not for business or money.

Honestly, this was one of our most fun Married to an Alpha Female episodes and my tips are truly perfect for the partners of those alphas. Craig and I use these in our everyday lives and it helps us respect and acknowledge each other as humans and partners.

Listen in to learn more and see you in 2021!

"We chose each other as life partners, not as business partners." Errin and Craig Weisman

    In this episode:

[02:05] Let's start by listening to what's happening down on the farm with Craig.

[04:14] Craig explains what tiling is and why you put a pipe in a field.

[10:16] Quick mental picture of what these pipes look like.

[13:04] They talk about what pattern tiling is a relatively new procedure and what the old procedure was like.

[17:55] It's not necessary to know everything that's going on in each other's lives, and that's how you build trust.

[22:07] It's time for the Things That Craig Doesn't Know segment.

[22:07] Craig doesn't know everything the kids are getting.

[25:16] Craig doesn't know the name of the new podcast Errin is launching.

[27:09] Craig has no idea about the new cheetah picture on the wall.

[30:38] Craig doesn't know that Errin got published in Indigo Blue as an entrepreneurial expert talking about toxic work environments.

[31:30] January is going to be big.

[33:02] Your tip for being married to an alpha female.

  • 242: Feelings with Dr. Katrina Ubell

Ever had some huge emotions swamp you and all you could think was, "Feelings… yuck!"? Well believe it or not, you are in control of your feelings and emotions and they are the key to unlocking success and fulfillment. Don't believe me? Dr. Katrina Ubell is here to share why this is true and why her methods work for her clients.

Dr. Ubell is known as the weight loss coach for busy physicians but what she really does is so much more impactful. After spending years of her life on the yo-yo of dieting, losing and gaining weight in equal measure, she knew there had to be a change.

It took having a pretty huge emotional event happen for her to realize that it was time to bring in an expert. She started with a life coach and what she realized was that her weight loss or gain was directly related with the feelings and emotions she was experiencing.

From there she was able to take charge of her emotions and she's been finding success and fulfillment ever since. She was one of the very first physician coaches that I started following and unbeknownst to her, she's the reason that I knew this path was possible.

Listen as we chat about her background, the role of emotions in our lives, and why you don't have to be ruled by them nor do you need to suppress them. So much of what we learn as doctors is to ignore what's going on in your body so that you can just keep pressing on. It's time to stop and we're sharing how you can do it!

"Feelings are everything, feelings are so important, feelings do create all of our results, but we totally have control over what we are feeling." Dr. Katrina Ubell

    In this episode:

[01:50] Welcome to the show, Dr. Katrina!

[03:53] Dr. Katrina shares her background and what she is doing now.

[08:25] Dr. Katrina speaks about how nice it is to hear that she is making a difference in people's lives.

[11:22] Dr. Katrina discusses how even though you have evidence that people love what you are doing, you will focus on the one negative review.

[15: 29] Being average is perfectly ok.

[17:37] Listen as Dr. Katrina shares why she picked the word feelings.

[20:19] Dr. Katrina spends a lot of time with her clients teaching, them how to actually process emotions.

[24:19] "Our emotions are created by our thoughts."

[26:19] Emotions are data points for unmet needs.

[31:00] Dr. Katrina speaks about neural pathways and rerouting them.

  • 241: Solocast - Fear

We all feel fear, but what do you do when it comes over you? For many the answer is to let it drive your actions and how you approach your life. But what if you could feel the fear, understand its place in your life, and still make strides towards your goals? You can!

There are two books that have been instrumental in how I talk about and think about fear. Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert and The Art of Fear: Why Conquering Fear Won't Work and What To Do Instead by Kristen Ulmer. In both, the authors share ways to approach fear without losing your drive or passion.

In Big Magic, Elizabeth Gilbert writes a letter to fear. She lets fear know that he can come along on the ride with creativity, but that he's there as an observer only. He doesn't get to talk, share an opinion, mess with the music, and most importantly, he's not allowed to drive.

Isn't it amazing to think about talking to your fears in this way? Acknowledge that they exist but then remind them who is boss and what their role is in your life?

I think that is so empowering and it's helped me to rethink the role of fear in my life and my business. Listen as I share my insights about The Art of Fear as well and why I use both of these books with my own coaching clients. I'm also sharing my tips on approaching fear with a healthy respect and perspective.

"So many times in my own life, fear was the driver." Dr. Errin Weisman

    In this episode:

[01:20] We are talking about fear today.

[02:10] Hear a letter to fear by Elizabeth Gilbert.

[05:23] Learn about the monster in the basement as Kristen Ulmer described it in her book.

[11:29] Whatever you repress becomes your represser.

[15:29] My Errinisms about using fear more wisely.

  • 239: Permission with Dr. Kara Pepper

True or False: You are a worthy individual regardless of what you do? You simply need to exist? According to Dr. Kara Pepper, the answer to that question is a huge True. You are worthy, you simply need to give yourself permission to believe it.

Dr. Pepper followed her childhood dream and became a physician, had the husband, and had the two kids. The problem came when she realized that her life was hard...every single day. Surely this wasn't what she'd worked for all those years.

It took coaching and learning how to manage her mind and her expectations for herself to bust out of some epic burnout. Now she's helping others to do the same. She's supporting physicians to manage their burdens and their mindset so that they can find fulfillment in their life's purpose.

First step? Give yourself permission to take care of yourself.

Listen as Dr. Kara shares more about her background and what drove her to become a physician coach. She's digging deep into why we as physicians especially find it hard to give ourselves permission to be anything other than perfect. If you've been feeling the nagging ropes of burnout, then this is the episode for you.
