There's only one Paul Kupperberg. But there's a big group of creators that came up at DC Comics during the so-called Bronze Age of comics, and lucky enough, Paul's friends with most of them. So he decided to do what friends do and reminisce about the days of yore, bringing the adventures of our four-color heroes to life in the 70s and 80s. And then he did something different. He recorded those conversations, transcribed them into text, and compiled it all into a book called Direct Conversations. It's the sequel to his similar Direct Comments, and Paul gets into it with such DC luminaries as Howard Chaykin, Paul Levitz, Joe Staton, and more! So basically, this episode is talking to Paul about talking to his friends, all of whom helped make DC what it is today. No big whoop.

Cartoons! You love them and so do we. The Fleischer Cartoon Studio created some of the most groundbreaking cartoons ever, and this week's guest, Ray Pointer, gives us the history behind them. An animator himself, Ray is the official historian of the Fleischer works and recently spoke at both San Diego Comic-Con and New York Comic Con about them and the evolution of cartoons. It was a true pleasure speaking to Ray, a fountain of animation expertise and information!

From DC Comics intern to award-winning independent artist, Jamal Igle brings focus and creativity to his every project. After the internship and building his comics resume with small publishers, Jamal hopped into animation with a storyboarding stint at Sony Animation. New Warriors brought him back into the comics fold, and he's been steadily crushing it ever since. At Marvel, it was Iron Fist/Wolverine and Daredevil/Shi, and at DC, he's best known for long runs on Supergirl and Firestorm. He's the primary artist on Black, co-created and written by past guest Kwanza Osajyefo, and did the creator-owned thing with Molly Danger. It's a smorgasbord of comics fun, so strap in and listen up!

Jamar Nicholas is in the house! And we couldn't be happier to have him. Creator of the hit kids' graphic novel, Leon: Protector of the Playground, Jamar kickstarted his cartooning career in 1997 with the self-published Jamar Chronicles. Following his creation of the webcomic Detective Boogaloo: Hip-Hop Cop, Jamar became an editorial cartoonist for the Philadelphia Tribune. His most acclaimed work may be his graphic novel adaptation of Geoffrey Canada's memoir Fist, Stick, Knife, Gun, which won several awards. Now, through a partnership with Scholastic, Leon is getting his own new series of graphic novels, starting with Leon the Extraordinary next week.  All that, and he also teaches!

Another inker extraordinaire to add to our collection! It's Randy Emberlin, a prolific artist who embellished some of our favorite work around, including G.I. Joe, Doctor Strange, Alien Legion, and Dark Horse's Ghost. But we know him best from his work on the Amazing Spider-Man, primarily with Erik Larsen and Mark Bagley! He was a key part of the rise of Venom and Carnage in the 90s, and made the Spider-Man of that era a cornerstone of our collecting past. Randy has also worked on many educational books and multiple animated TV commercials.

It's the simple story of a letterer-turned-cartoonist, who conquered the world of children's entertainment with the ongoing Ordinary People Change the World book series and the associated Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum cartoon on PBS. But how did Chris Eliopoulos climb this mountain, you ask? Well, listen to the episode. But if you want the Cliff's Notes version: he started out as a highly successful and prolific letterer and font designer, who among other things, hand-lettered the first 100 issues of Savage Dragon (past guest Erik Larsen is a friend). Chris was bit by the cartooning bug on that same title, where he introduced Desperate Times as a backup feature. After a bigger stint on Marvel's Franklin Richards: Son of a Genius (and the Misery Loves Sherman web comic), he hooked up with writer Brad Meltzer for the aforementioned kids' book series, which takes a heroic look at historical and contemporary real-life figures. And then, just for fun, the pair created the Xavier Riddle show, where the main character interacts with figures from the books.

The newest books in the series, which takes a turn into the fictional, are I am Superman and I am Batman, which drop on September 27. Go get 'em!

Michael dialed in all the way from Israel to talk turkey with the Bandits on this bonus Friday episode. He started, as so many of our guests do, at Neal Adams' Continuity Studio, where he first worked on storyboards and advertisements. He quickly transitioned into comics work, primarily for DC on titles like Challengers of the Unknown, Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes, and Wonder Woman, as well as stories involving Batman, Spider-Man, and Black Lightning. After a decade traveling and pursuing other adventures, he returned to comics in the early 90s on Batman titles as well as The Huntress and Team Titans. We can only scratch the surface here of Michael's comics journeys, so do yourself a favor and dig into this episode posthaste!
