This week Farz tells two tales of the ultimate red flaggy relationship – humans & hubris. Hint - it’s been in the news! Farz covers two stories of man’s lust for dominance of the deep sea that end in disaster. First, the Byford Dolphin Accident, which contains 0 dolphins, and many gruesome deaths. Then, the Kursk submarine incident, where Russia’s inability to get along with anyone, caused things to go from bad to worse. 

Then, you’d think this would lighten the mood - but it really doesn’t - Taylor takes us on a journey through the colorful, manic, and ultimately tragic life of Vincent Van Gogh. Who was the most famous painter of all time? Chances are you have something Vincent painted in your house right now. We all know that he wasn’t successful in life and that he cut off his ear. But why?? We’ll explore.

This week Taylor starts us off with the mysterious murder-suicide at Mayerling, a hunting lodge that’s more like a palace outside of Vienna. In 1898 Rudolf, Crown Prince of Austria, and his 17-year-old mistress Baroness Mary Vetsera died, changing the course of history and leading to the ruin of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (and a little thing called WWI). 

Then, Farz brings us to Miami via a killing spree that ended in the death of one of the most famous fashion designers of the 90s, Gianni Versace, by the coward Andrew Cunanan. Motives remain unclear - why did Cunanan go on a murder spree across the country only to gun down an icon at 9am on a weekday?

This week Farz goes back across the pond to tell the story of the murderous pairing of Ian Brady and Myra Hindley. These two attacked and killed children across Manchester and buried them in the moors (which is British for super big field). A Neo-Nazi found his match in a girl who would do anything for him, takes one to know one.  This is the story of the Moors Murders. 

Then, Taylor tells the truly American tale of Lizzie Borden and her axe (maybe!?! We don’t know that she did it for sure and we will never know!). On a Tuesday morning on a busy street Andrew and Abby Borden were brutally murdered with an axe before noon! Could it have been their daughter?

This week Taylor goes back to the Gothic tale of Mary and Percy Shelley. There’s a lot of poetry, free love, and that odd ‘poor but rich-poor’ way of traveling around Europe. There’s also so much sadness, many babies that never got to grow up, dreams that never came true, and a string of broken hearts. 

But also Frankenstein! It’s a story about a man who gave humanity science that quite possibly humanity doesn’t deserve. (We’ve been through this with the Curies!) 

Farz delves into the randomness of life to tell the story of the murders of the Petit Family in Connecticut - The Cheshire home invasion murders. When two criminals see the Petit family at a store they follow them home and commit the most atrocious crime. It’s ‘In Cold Blood’ all over again - but this time, the police had a chance to save the family, and 110% failed.

This week Farz covers the murder of Dee Dee Blanchard by her daughter’s boyfriend. The twist is that Dee Dee had been keeping her daughter, Gypsy Rose, in a state of medical distress for no reason. She pretended Gypsy had Muscular Dystrophy, Cancer, and more. Plus, she told her that she was  younger than she was?? All for attention & free trips to Disney. It’s Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy to the extreme. 

Taylor brings us back to the 1400s to talk about the Czech warrior and hero - Jan Žižka. In a time of Popes, Anti-Popes, and reformations - Jan never lost a battle. He was a one-eyed warrior (until he was a zero-eyed warrior) who brought new tactics to the battlefield that had never been seen before. Taylor is pushing the limit of the podcast by saying this is a relationship between the Catholic church and a people who just wanted to worship without being exploited. Good thing nothing has changed!

Join us this week for the haunting story of the 1922 murders at the Hinterkaifeck Farm. The family heard noises & saw mysterious footprints leading up to their murders. Whoever killed them made themselves at home for a few days, cooking meals, feeding the animals, and taking their time to get out of dodge. This remains Germany’s most famous unsolved murder 101 years later. 

We also go over the rollercoaster life of Grady Stiles, the “Lobster Boy” born into a world of Side Shows just as they were petering out of public acceptance. A violent alcoholic who murdered – and also was murdered. It’s a wild ride through the history of the ‘Freak Show’ to the family that is still alive today (and it’s Farz who takes us on this journey!)

This week we both go back into the early 1900s to tell the stories of two old-timey tragedies. 

First, Farz takes us to Silent Film Hollywood for the sensational trial of Roscoe Fatty Arbuckle - a movie star who got involved in the mysterious death of an actress, Virginia Rappe, at the height of his fame. A party weekend in San Francisco turned into a life-ruining event.

Speaking of tragic events Taylor brings us to 1937 when the Hindenburg crashed upon landing in New Jersey, the trust of a successful company and tons of successful flights were destroyed in about 30 seconds. Including, of course, many lives. Did you know that The Hindenburg flew over NYC earlier that day and that it had swastikas on the tail? We did Nazi that coming.
