    Absolutely Riveting!
This is the second book I've read by this author. The first one, "By Any Other Name" I finished right before I started this one. I loved that book so much it inspired me to immediately read another book by Ms. Loch, which is how I came to read "Heart's Ransom". And I was not disappointed!
What a story! Again Ms. Loch weaves a wonderful story around a plot that is both dynamic and engaging. The plot is chock full of excitement including sword fights, betrayal, political intrigue, and an evil vendetta. "Heart's Ransom" clearly demonstrates Ms. Loch's superior knowledge of the unstable political climate of England during this period. With mastery she weaves historical facts in with fiction to create a medieval story that is superior in every way. The characters are all fully developed and I was easily able to relate to them.
Talon is a quintessential tortured hero. He suffered extreme emotional trauma from his first marriage and, as a result, has walled off his heart to all, except his beloved eight year old daughter, Rose. Gwen is an absolutely wonderful heroine! She is strong, courageous, loyal, smart, and extremely intelligent. She is the perfect match for Talon! Gwen, once she realizes the torment that Talon suffers, declares war against Talon to claim his heart! Poor Talon did not stand a chance.
But, the main characters of this story are not the only ones that are captivating. Ms. Loch includes a whole cast of supporting characters who are all as equally well drawn and dynamic as the h and H. This book is one that you not so much read, as experience.
The story drew me in and evoked emotions that ran the gamut from sorrow, fear, anger, to extreme joy.

    Not bad....
This was my 1st experience with a Samantha Holt book. I appreciated the plot and found the Hero and Heroine to be quite likeable. But there was So much that could have been developed. I felt like the length of it was a copout as there was so much to be built on that would have upped the drama, the tension, the emotional strife and eventual growth. The potential for a truly good story went unrealized. What there was was good enough but far from what it could have been. I cannot imagine bothering with another book in this series except perhaps out of curiosity to see if Ms. Holt has learned to bring the possibilities she creates to life. To have all the ingredients in the bowl but forget to stir is sad.
NARRATOR : Wendy Anne Darling is not the most talented of performers. Her grasp of accents is extremely lacking . The delivery is somewhat flat and is too slow,When I sped the playback up to 1.25 speed it improved but 1.50 was too fast. I would say that she too has potential however. Her voice is Comfortable in its timbre and the overall quality of her narration lacks all the mouthy breathy sounds that make me turn off the book and make a note to avoid in future.
CREDITWORTY? #1 this books cost was less than that of a credit. so NO , not creditworthy.
HEAT FACTOR: for the first time I am stumped to Say .... There was sex and it was more slightly racy than steamy. But it may have been my overall boredom with the lack of potential achieved that led me to feel the same way about the lovemaking which came late in the story.

    Short, Sweet, and So Adorable!
This is the second book by Cassandra Dean and Ana Clements that I have listened to. The book is a short story that spans years of correspondence. I loved the performance that Ana Clements gave Nic and Thomas. She wove emotions into the characters that one would not get just from reading the book. This is the first book of the series and is a standalone listen. I will definitely look for more books by this author and narrator. My review is not a synopsis of the book, but rather my opinion of it. I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, narrator, and/or publisher.
    Lovely Victorian romance
A great Victorian romance. The two main characters are very engaging and brilliantly brought to life by narrator Ana Clements. I'm looking forward to the next parts in the series.

    Really engaging story beautifully narrated
I thoroughly enjoyed this story and thought using letters to open and close the narrative was a unique and engaging way to introduce us to the main protagonists.
Ana Clements narration is faultless and beautiful to listen to. Her characters are clearly defined and you can really picture them from her tones she uses.
I'm looking forward to listening to the rest of the series.
    Historical romance with promise
The characters are nicely drawn although thus far the scandals seem merely alluded to, there is a promise of more development.
The narration gave intimacy to the story and encouraged you to want to know more.
I enjoyed this performance and would look forward to the next in the series.

    Publisher's Summary:
From best-selling author Ayr Bray comes The Illegitimate Heir, the romantic tale of an honorable soldier, a rich beauty, and a vengeful rake....
The younger son of an earl often cannot afford to marry for love, so it is fortunate that Colonel Richard Fitzwilliam has fallen in love with Helen Malham, who has both beauty and wealth. Her father, however, will not allow her to marry a man without a title.
When the prince regent names Richard the Duke of Blachedone, it is both a blessing and a curse. His newly acquired title means he may marry Helen - assuming she will have him once the truth comes out. He was awarded the dukedom not for his service to the Crown, but because he is the former duke's illegitimate son, and soon all of London will know.
Mr. Calvin Aldrich is a rake and a blackguard who is set to be one of the richest dukes in England...until his uncle is stripped of his titles and possessions while on his deathbed. Bereft of his inheritance, Calvin will stop at nothing to get revenge on his uncle's illegitimate heir. He will strike at Richard any way he can, even if it means ruining an innocent woman.

Don't judge this book by it's cover
While I only chose to listen to this book to hear the narrator's--Basil Sands--take on this genre, I did enjoy the majority of the story and was pleased that the steamy scenes, intense as they may, were actually few and far between and the story's plot and character development was the primary focus making it enjoyable to listen to.
I am not sure how this book could be considered a sequel to "Pride and Prejudice" since it had nothing to do with the primary characters, plot, and storyline of that classic tale, other than they were mentioned in the book as cousins and occasionally provided dialogue; But this story's main plot about an illegitimate heir's strife to overcome all the obstacles set before him was quite good.
With all that said I believe credit goes to Basil Sands, the narrator, for bringing this story to life and adding in the extra color this story needed to stay above water for me. His plethora of voices and talent for expressing the proper amount of emotion at the appropriate times is to be applauded. I would highly recommend listening to more of his work.
This audiobook was given to me in exchange for an honest review.
Well worth the listen and or read
Would you listen to The Illegitimate Heir again? Why?
Yes. Once the story established itself, it was hard to stop listening to .
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Illegitimate Heir?
Not to make a spoiler , but it was when Richard understood and forgive his mother.
Which character as performed by Basil Sands was your favorite?
    Richard, without a doubt
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When Richard comforted his new sister. The compassion he showed was so gentle so loving.
    Any additional comments?
At first I was " put off" by the woman's voices by mr sands. They tended to be the same.

    Great Read!
All the stories were well written and the characters well defined. The authors did a great job drawing the readers in and allowing us to experience their many emotions. The story had intrigue, suspense, betrayal, surprises, love, and happy endings. I have read all these stories separately and enjoyed them all. I would have enjoyed some I hadn't read before.
    Love them!

One minute Amaryllis Duvane is the belle of the London season - a "diamond of the first water", desired by every man and envied by every woman. Even better, she's about to marry the man of her dreams.
But when her father dies, Amaryllis loses more than a parent - she loses her fortune. Left penniless, she's forced to depend on the generosity of her wealthy relations, who make her work as a servant to her own socially ambitious cousins.
When her ex-fiancé, the devastatingly handsome marquess of Merechester, courts one of her relatives, Amaryllis can't bear the thought of him seeing what's become of her - or how much she still desires him.

    Title has been changed
Amaryllis Duvane is the name of the heroine of The Poor Relation (Signet Regency, March 1984, ISBN 0451128184) published under Beaton's previous penname of Marion Chesney. Under any name, it's very entertaining and I would recommend it highly. I love Chesney's acerbic humor and her eye for eccentricity. However, I do wish the name had not been changed as it will only cause confusion (it confused me - I had hoped for a new unknown Chesney).
    Fun Story
I don't know how anyone could give this story less than five stars. It is pure Regency romance and only as M. C. Beaton can write it. It's only as I reflect on on the story that I can see the Cinderella element to it, but like the Walt Disney version it is not.
    History/Romance/Intrigue - winning combination
I love the Regency books written by M.C. Beat on. They are historically interesting and the romance and intrigue leaves me wishing I could go back there in time
Good story. The ending was rushed
Good story. The ending was rushed.
    British style
This is the second book I read from Ms. Beaton. The first was one of her Agatha Raisin mysteries. Amaryliss has a totally different style and I also enjoyed this. Her style is diverse along the lines of Andrew McCall Smith. Most enjoyable. This particular story had a British style reminding me of Downton Abbey or a similar venue.
