One of the worst novels I've ever heard.
Long, drawn out, and uninspired. Worse because the voice that the narrator gave some of the men was obnoxious. I made it to the end but only barely.

Too fluffy even for chick lit
    Any additional comments?
The amazon.reviews for this book have roughly 4 stars so it may be the performance that ruined this book for me. The narrator's voice is is actually pleasant and she has a decent accent and good diction but the flow in which everything is read is a bit painful. I took me weeks to go through this book it was so hard to sit through.
The author uses far too much description, every object and moment is imbued with too much metaphorical significance, it really slows down the narrative and makes it kind of cheesy. The whole book is both overly sweet and unnecessarily melancholic. Both Mary and Nathaniel muse endlessly about their loneliness, inability to understand love and lack of acceptance. Those are normally legit feelings to muse about but their was so little action and so much musing it was waaayyyyy too much. I've read some good Austen fan-fiction but I'd pass on this one.
    Umm it's okay...
I read A LOT of Jane Austen fan-fiction. I like the idea of this story and it could have been amazing, but... It was too wordy in places and not wordy enough in others. Very choppy in the reading. There is a lot of "and she said" "and she then nodded". I will probably read more by this author because I can't get enough of the Bennet family, however I do feel this one should have been priced lower due to the quality of work. This is just my opinion...

    Publisher's Summary:
Miss Jane Matthews feels completely out of place amongst the finery of the ton. She's the daughter of a country vicar, for goodness sake, and nearly a spinster to boot. Frankly, she would prefer to stay that way. How can a lady of Quality start up her own modiste shop, after all? But when her distant cousin-the Dowager Duchess of Somerton, of all people-offers to sponsor her for a Season in London, she agrees, but only so she can take the opportunity to search for a storefront for her business. Perhaps, in that regard, the Season won't all be in vain.
The widower of a loveless marriage, Peter Hardwicke, the Duke of Somerton, has already done his duty and provided an heir for his dukedom, so he sees no reason whatsoever to remarry. Even if, heaven forbid, something should happen to his son, he still has three younger brothers who are each quite capable of inheriting. Taking a wife would only mean adding a new responsibility to his already too-full schedule. He's more than busy enough keeping his mother, siblings, and children in line-not to mention sorting out the myriad problems plaguing one of his estates. But when Lord Utley, one of Peter's childhood friends and a man who has been on the wrong side of Peter's ire for many years now, takes an unlikely interest in Jane, he has to intervene. Peter will be damned if he'll allow Utley to ruin yet another life. But will rescuing Jane from Utley's clutches land Peter with another loveless marriage?

    Editing
Overall this series was fantastic. I enjoyed listening to the stories. I could only give this book overall 4 stars though. The narrator does a splendid job reading this story, but the editor for the audible narration should be fired. There were several editing mistakes.
    Exasperating characters
What did you like best about Merely a Miss? What did you like least?
The storyline was good. There was romance and excitement. A lot was predictable if you're an avid HR reader.
Would you be willing to try another one of Pearl Hewitts performances?
Absolutely not! Most of her female characters sounded like the Chipmunks. She cannot do male interpretation. I stopped listening.
Do you think Merely a Miss needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Yes, there are more characters to follow-up on.
    Any additional comments?
The 'H' Peter was a hypocrite. He feels that he must go call upon 3 females the next day to placate his mother, who has about as much insight and respect for her grown children as a harp seal, and then proceeds to admonish Jane for quelling her fears to rescue a little girl in peril. He orders her to never do it again "You will do as you are told!" But he won't stand up to mommy so he can get some urgent estate issues addressed.

If you could sum up Highland Thunder in three words, what would they be?
    Wonderful, Outstanding, Super
What was one of the most memorable moments of Highland Thunder?
When Duncan saw her for the first time and fell in love, but she was already married to his best friend.
Have you listened to any of Paul Woodsons other performances before? How does this one compare?
    Yes. He is improving greatly.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It brought every emotion in me.
    Any additional comments?
Wonderful written story. I did not want to stop listening. Paul did a great job on this one.
    Loved it
What a great story and narrated by Paul Woodson made it even better than when I read it. Loved the connection between the main characters, Duncan and Brenna, despite their difficulty in reaching their HEA, but when they finally connect it is wonderful. I love Ms. Baldwin writing style, it pulls me in the story and makes me feel like I am there cheering, laughing, crying along with the characters. Adding the voice of Mr. Woodson made it almost real, his deep voice, full of passion and the Scotish burr makes my heart melt.
    Good story, enjoyable
The narration makes it or breaks it for me. Woodson seemed to be performing instead of reading. I prefer a relaxed read as though I am listening to a story or a conservation. Not an over acted play.

I loved every everything except. ..
Great story. Different from most. Sabrina and her kissing experiment is something not to missed. My only complaint is that the narrator used a voice for Sabrina that she, instead of sounding like the young woman that she was, made her sound like a woman on the shady side of 40.
    ehhh
Incredibly rushed ending. The novel needed another chapter to please this reader. overall a good story.
Others might like it, but it's not for me..
Lets go back to me being shallow. Ive told all of you that before. Not interested in the way real people look in real life, I only want a beautiful hero and heroine. Sooo, the heroine is full-figured or plump or something like that. But worse was the hero. Hes 20-something with a bump on his nose and a receding hairline. Really? A receding hairline? WTH? I dont even know right now if I will even finish this book, or even read anything else by Jane Charles. I just cant unsee those words. I dont want to read about a hero with his "hair receding."
I liked Sabrina, and the way she didnt let those other girls treatment of her get her down. I liked how she just took off walking to London by herself, no matter how far it is. And I liked Marius picking her up on her way and after hearing her story he knew something was wrong. However, I cant finish this book. There can be no receding hairline for me. That is toooo real and I read to get out of the real world. I stopped reading at 46%. I couldnt get their descriptions out of my mind.
I dont know if there was sex but Im assuming there was since there was explicit sex in the last book. But no swearing.
As to the narrator: He still stinks at the womens voices and he still reads without emotions. He does a great job at the mens voices but thats not all there is to narrating a book.

    Fantastic!
Would you listen to Escape To The Highlands again? Why?
Yes, I would listen to it again, the narrator did a very good job with the character's voices!
Who was your favorite character and why?
Jacqueline because she was a feisty and stubborn woman!
Have you listened to any of Bill Dicks other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, this is the first time I hear his voice! Job well done!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, I love to listen to it by chapters!
    Any additional comments?
I loved her first book THE HONOR OF A HIGHLANDER from the MacKinnon Clan series. Here is the story of Jacqueline Renold, an English born lady who is the sister to the king's executioner and Ewan, the Laird's cousin is second in command of their army. Jacqueline is forced to marry a man she does not love, and being a feisty and stubborn woman, she commits an act of treason and flees away to the Highlands, because she only wants her freedom. En route, she is rescued by Ewan, a warrior who is on a mission to free Scottish prisoners held captive by the English.
    A sweet escape!
April Holthaus has again written a huge tale into a short book and she has done it with real flair! With a exciting plot, vibrant surroundings and strong vivacious individuals this story grabs your attention at the beginning and holds it until the very end. The originality and inspiration that this story is built on virtually shines through. No wishy-washy characters either.
If you're a fan of Medieval Scotland Romances then you will not be disappointed.
NARRATOR: Unfortunately the narrator was the one distinctly negative aspect of this book. Bill Dick has not got a large repetoire of voices and struggles to even be able to hint at a female voice. He was uncomfortable to listen to. Only the excitement and interest in this novella kept him from ruining the book.
CREDITWORTHY? Indeed! (but be sure to listen to the snippet to be sure that you can deal with the narrator's performance. )
HEAT FACTOR: Chemistry definitely , heat not so much.

    Members Reviews:
    An Entertaining Regency Spy Novel
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
Sure, I just didn't care for how the narrator made Phillppa (and several other female characters) sound. Too shrill and childish for my taste for a female protagonist.
    Any additional comments?
I found this audiobook an enjoyable listen because it invested sufficient time in a story beyond the romance between the protagonists. I thought the main characters' personalities were commensurate, and they made a complimentary couple. Phillippa was strong and witty, and she used her strengths in a way that would be acceptable for a woman of the times. However, she was slightly imbecilic when it came to her own safety, which felt contradictory to her intellect. I liked the use of secondary characters and backstory for some of the characters, but it was bothersome that there were several loose ends not tied up by the end. Why introduce something interesting that helps propel the story forward and then never come back to it? This book was like going to a fun wedding of people you barely know: The food and drink, music, and atmosphere are all great, but you realize you don't know as much as you'd like about many of the people there.
    Get another narrator
Story was great but I couldn't stand the narrator's voice. The only reason I didn't give one star for performance was the fact that she did have good inflection. However, she sounded like she had too much saliva between her hard palate & her too large dentures. You could literally hear the spit moving around when she talked & I could imagine her showering the microphone as she read. I actually cringed a few times.
Audiobook narrator was a bad fit.
I suppose this is romance, but there was no emotional draw for me.
I was bored, I wanted to quit, but I hoped it would get better. It did not. But some readers loved this. I wonder if reading the book would have made it better for me than listening to it?
Most of the book felt like meaningless chit chat, as if the author is describing a party. Phillippa attends parties, plans parties, gossips, flirts with Philip, then gets upset when someone else flirts with Philip. I wanted more character development. Friend Nora was a bore but she could have been made interesting. A romance develops but I didnt feel anything. I was not drawn in emotionally.
Part of the plot was not supported with logic. Marcus was a British spy. Laurent was a French spy. The war is over.

If you're going to write in the Regency, know what the Regency is like.
The romance with a very flawed hero was fine. But anachronisms such as "Grungy" (that word did not come into use until the 1960s) or calling 1816's summer "The hottest on record" when 1816 was far better known as "The year without a summer"? Someone did not do the research.
The ending was rather contrived too. Does there need to be a kidnap and carriage-chase? I think not.
Positive points though to both a hero with a major issue (drug addiction) and a father with Alzheimer's (made me cry because we're going through that in our family. Well chosen and well written).
This will be being Bookcrossing-ed as soon as I get around to it.
I Ended Up Really Enjoying It
When I first started this book I had a hard time getting into it. It had a slow start and at first glance I didn't really like Jane or her brother Jason. As the book progressed I got to know Jane better and realized that she was not as irritating as I thought she was and that she actually had unexpected depths. I never really warmed up to Jason, but I don't think we were required to. He serves his purpose whether the reader likes him or not.
I liked the friendship that developed between Jane and Victoria. At first Victoria seemed empty headed and naive. That is not the impression that you leave the book with. She gets some good advice and takes a long hard look at herself and admits when she was wrong. She also stands up for her friends in the face of public scorn if she believes they have nothing to be ashamed of.
As I write this I realize that this book is about not judging a book by its cover. I had a lot of preconceptions about the characters and how they would behave. They seemed to conform to my judgment at first, but by the end of the book they had come into their own and made themselves shine beyond the type I had cast them as. I really liked their character development.
I think that one of my favorite parts of the story is when Jane shoves a mirror in Byrne's face and tells him some not so nice truths. I do think she was deflecting a bit, but she had some very honest insights into his character. I like that he owned up to those things internally and came to some closure.
I think the best part of this story, for me, was the friendship that Jane and Michael had.

It isn't that she is against marriage, and if her situation were different, she would welcome the opportunity for love and children. It is just not practical. So good that I listened again! and again!
Great story, wonderful characters, twists and turns, suspense but freeing fun.... this book had it all.
NARRATOR : Very well done. I can't even recall because it felt real and I just heard the book. THAT is a very good narrator.
    CREDITWORTHY? YES!!
HEAT FACTOR: steamy where it needed to be... but well done!
    Good book, barely ok narration..
Wow! How many of hundreds of times has this book been written: Shes the brother of your best friend so shes off-limits. However, it was still a good story.
Felding had 4 or 5 of his friends help him keep an eye on his sister, his sister that gets in one mess after another and has to be saved, and Taylor happens to always be there to rescue Phoebe. They fall in love by 50% but thats also when the book changes to a mystery. Taylor had been married twice before and both of them died and suddenly Phoebe is having mishaps. It became exciting at the halfway mark. I tried to figure out who was doing it and I just couldnt. I love those kinds of mysteries, when I dont have a clue. Phoebe did have several TSTL moments, but that was only because she didnt like abiding by rules, and only one TSTL moment was really bad, and it was at the end of the book. And Taylor's plan to figure out who was trying to kill Phoebe caused so many problems between them. It was fantastic when it all came together.
There was some pretty explicit sex, NOT erotic, in this book but there was no swearing.
As to the narrator: Mostly pretty bad. His voices for the men were wonderful but the womens voices sucked. They sounded way too manly, and if the book called for a laugh or whisper or anything, really, Tristan Hunt did none of those things. He has a great reading voice but he really needs improvement. If you dont mind the female characters sounding like men then, yeah, hes 5 star narrator. I'm just glad there were a lot more men than women.

But the good-natured Archer can be dangerous when crossed - and he'll do anything to keep the woman he's adored for so long safe in his arms.

Good ending to the series - might be Spoilerish !
I liked this book - I just didn't love it. I found the entire series to be a tad depressing. I know women are abused and suffer in silence - and I appreciate an author taking the time to bring the subject to light. But an entire series of abused women (not to mention all the secondary characters that were ALSO abused women) turned the subject from enlightening to depressing and lessen my reading enjoyment.
Ms Collins writes wonderful books and her characters are always well defined and her plots fascinating. I will be the first to admit that I didn't have a clue as to the villain in this series. And I was shocked - Bravo Ms Collins!
I would have given this book 5 stars, but there were a couple of issues that dropped the rating. Might be Spoilerish -

1 - I could not wrap my mind about Perdita's marriage plans. She wants to marry someone she doesn't love because she loved her first husband and he abused her. To quote Tina Turner - what's love got to do with it? This made zero sense.
2 - Lord Archer Lisle is a dukes son - his wife will be Lady Archer Lisle - not Mrs Lisle.
3 - First Dunthorp is a viscount and later he is a marquess - ???
4 - Archer's father is the Duke of Pemberton and later referred to as the Duke of Lisle and then back to Pemberton and then Lisle again. That sort of error is frustrating to me as a reader.
All in all, this was a good series - a little depressing, but still very good. I would recommend Manda Collins to anyone. She is a very gifted author.
    Heartwarming & Breath-stealing!
The final installment of the Wicked Widows trilogy is equal parts heartwarming and breath-stealing as two friends, Perdita, the widowed duchess of Ormonde, and Lord Archer Lisle, fall in love while solving the overarching mystery of the series: who is threatening the âWicked Widowsâ? And why? Collins deftly infuses the story of Perditaâs victorious journey from abused spouse to a woman in charge of her own destiny with sensitivity, humor, and suspense.
    Finish
I usually give this author a 5 on all her books. This was the book 3 of a series of 3. The author tied it all together, but during the first half it kinda dragged a little. The lead characters story was already set up from the first two books. I would recommend reading simply to complete the story line.
