Little payoff for a long listen...

I have to start by saying that l have enjoyed this series from the beginning. I'll keep getting these books as they are released. But like the last book in the series there is too much going on in the story and you never really get to sink your teeth into anything. The battle scene is good and reminiscent of the Battle of Midway from WWII. Missing is the character interaction and development that was so fun and prevalent in the first half dozen books. If possible I'd recommend readers ask Audible to put out an omnibus version of the last, this and the next book.

Getting old

What made the experience of listening to Blood in the Water the most enjoyable?

This series is well written and enjoyable. However, the rate of change, and incredible proliferation of different people is really straining incredulity. From sailing ships to modern steel destroyers in 3 years! The initial advances in technology was fun and believable. But the tools to make the tools to make the tools, all in three years? Hard to keep swallowing the expanations.

Series is getting even better

For the past couple of books we've been focused more internally. This book expands this into a true operatic series. Warning there is a cliffhanger that will leave you waiting for the next in the series. If you have yet to start the series from the beginning I strongly recommend that.

It's incomplete, but I forgive him!

I think this is an extraordinary series, in fact I'd like to see each book as a season of a mini-series, as long as the author retained creative control, so the script writers don't screw it up as they usually do and spoil it for readers who like it fine just the way it was written. It would be predominantly CGI anyway.

This book started a bit slow but did end up with plenty of action. The one thing about the semi-cliffhanger status is that we know there's another one coming up! The way this series is put together means unlimited scope for expansion and bringing in new characters and groups. It's a really excellent creation!

Too many characters; too many places

I like the series, but they are taking way too much time setting up for the action. This one basically was mostly logistics for the first 3 quarters of the book. The last quarter was excellent. It featured my favorite character, Dennis Silva. He even sings in this one.

Surprise, surprise, surprise!

Even tho Wizard Cadet, and Wizard Defiant, are the first of this different trend of combining sorcery, magic, FTL, and self healing suits of armor, I was engrossed. Perhaps it was the military type action blended with pools of power and plasma weapons, or maybe it was the characters who were believable and well fleshed out in linear planes, Guy Williams did an admirable job in his rendition of new author Rodney Hartman text. Not exactly my cup of tea but I'm glad I explored with these wizards.

Action packed story

This is book seven in the Ark Royal Series. HMS Vanguard is the most powerful battleship build by the Royal Navy. Each of the books in this series features a ship starting with the old obsolete ship HMS Arch Royal. The last book featured HMS Warspite; the Navy has taken lessons learned and built the mighty HMS Vanguard. As in the other books there is a problem with the commanding officer and an unhappy crew. The Captain has mental problems, the XO went AWOL and our hero, Susan, is the newly assigned XO. As Susan is trying to figure out what is wrong with the ship and what to do, a new alien species is discovered and Vanguard is sent as part of the fleet to attempt to meet the aliens. Vanguard suddenly finds herself at war with the new alien species; thankfully the Tadpoles are allies in this war.

Nuttall usually has some interesting characters in his books and this story is no exception. The author has managed to keep information about the new aliens limited and that helps build more suspense. This is the first book in this series to feature a black woman in the leading role. Nuttall has always featured strong, competent women in his books. I cannot wait for the next book in the series. Ralph Lister does an adequate job narrating the story.

Good.... but.... ARGH!

Two things that are so annoying that on book 7 this author never caught on to, and has not resolved yet, just pisses me off.

First, the "After All" thing... i mean really?! EVERY DAMN SENTENCE ENDS WITH "AFTER ALL"!?!?! Is this a British thing? Because i'll tell ya right now, as an author and writer my self, i would NEVER let a work out for publication with an issue like that. Let alone 7 of them. Every time i listen to it now, i feel like i'm getting punched in the face with a wet noodle, it ruins the story for me.

Second. NO MILITARY INT HE WORLD would NOT provide a way for an XO to report their CO without repercussions on their record. This is seriously the dumbest plot point in this entire series, and i'm ready to scream! At the very least an informal meeting with an admiral that likes the XO, to explain her concerns would go completely off the record and the admiral could actually DO SOMETHING about the damn problem. No navy officer worth their salt would EVER let concerns for their own career put the people under their command in jeopardy. EVER. Because in any western style navy that very issue would get them dishonorably discharged.

Maybe this is a problem in the Royal Navy today. I don't know, but i heavily doubt it. In the US, an XO reliving a captain who is having a panic attack in the middle of combat would be hailed a hero.

Gripping

It is sad to see this series come to an end. I must say the ending is less than satisfying. Maybe that means there is going to be a spin off series.

Captain Scott wants to attack the Jung and destroy their ability to attack Earth again. Admiral Galiardi is against expanding the war beyond the Sol system. Captain Scott and the Alliance are again thinking outside of the box for a solution. I found that I had to pay attention during battle scenes as Brown had the Arora jumping, but coming out of the jump he would switch to a fighter or the Celestia. The author kept this style up throughout the book as a way to move quickly between various components of the fight. The Jung battleship, the Alliance, acquired in the prior book and rebuilt to include a jump drive goes into battle action in this story. The ending was most unexpected.

I enjoyed the gunship factory and the Princesss engineering feats. I also enjoyed, for the last time, the superb space battles and all the various characters that are like old friends to me. When will I again hear The jump flash passed over the bridge. I do hope Brown will continue this series in a spin-off of some type.

It is about fourteen and half hours long. Jeffrey Kafer did an excellent job narrating the series.

Illogical with a stupid ending.

Glad to be done with this book/series. The story has become as thin as paper.

Narration continues to be just awful

The story is ok. But the narrator just doesn't distinguish his characters and they are mostly all very ponderous and dull. The only two male characters that have a different voice are Josh and Loki. I can't even hardly pay attention to the story anymore because the narration is so boring. I just returned this audio book. I have decided I'm not going to ever find out whether Earth defeats the Jung.

Plot Convenience > Plausibility

I felt the overall story was quite engaging, if not confusing at times. The structure seemed a bit odd where the fist half of the book the Alliance dominated the Jung and the second half of the book tried to make up for that imbalance. Some spaceship chase sequences were particularly implausible where two experienced pilots get put to shame by a newbie soldier recruit.

Jessica is still being possessed by some sort of madness. The only plausible way the to explain her continued uncharacteristic behavior is perhaps to come up with a rationalization that she might be an abuser of stims or some other performance enhancing drugs which could explain why she's acting so strangely the last couple of books.

Personally I was looking toward a cathartic ending but there's a cliffhanger instead.

Overall however, I felt too many story arks were in this book were filler and that detracted from the overall scheme of things.

The story was sometimes hard to follow. Narration of the story sounded like the narrator was READ ING a script most of the time.

The Rho Agenda Goes Off ... Planet

Picking up immediately after Wormhole ends, Phillips takes his sci-fi to a whole new level. With alien technology running amok on Earth and with politicians promising to rebuild Dr. Stephenson's wormhole gateway, we get to experience the ongoing Kasari assimilation of the alien planet, Scion, through the eyes of Jennifer Smythe. With all of the heroes from his previous two Rho Agenda series under severe assault, it is amazing to see how these plot lines intertwine. This is the first of Phillips's books not narrated by MacLeod Andrews and I was a bit skeptical at the beginning, but found myself really enjoying the voices that Alexander Cendese brings to this story. Fabulous listen.

Good story terrible Narrator

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

No, the narrator destroys a perfectly good story, his inability to do multiple voices is so distracting. The other books in this series read by MacLeod Andrews were great, and then they changed narrators, What a shame

How could the performance have been better?

Have MacLeod Andrews read it. This guys voice was distracting, he couldn't adjust to play multiple roles and not even close to a female sounding voice which comprise most of the characters in this edition.

Aliens with British and Scottish accents..???

This is yet proof why good narrators should never be switched in a series. This narrator was interestingly different to begin with, but before the first quarter of the story was done, it became clear the narrator realized the author wasnt taking the material seriously, and so decided to follow suit. I cant say I blame the reader, but I do wish he could have at least done his part better.

Not sure what happened between this book and the last one in the original series, but someone certainly seems to have decided that the readers have gotten dumber since then. Otherwise I am not sure why the story seems to have devolved into this. Its simply a mess, with a few high points in between.

I wont ruin it for anyone who hasnt read it yet, but be warned, where the original three books had great story telling and awesome voice acting, this one has neither.

Very Solid Storyline well performed

This is a straight forward coming of age adventure story set in an easily imagined future. It is a cut above the typical sci fi space opera and makes no pretense of being anything other than fun reading. Nothing mystical, no paranormal stuff, no characters that are too anything to be believable.

So what if it is not a candidate for best science fiction book of the year. It's definitely 4+ entertainment. And if it is somewhat predictable (the good guys do win), the characters are not cardboard, the resolution is not preposterous, and it leaves you with that 'feels good' feeling that we all like to have now an then.

Rookie Privateer is a good start to series that can probably support about 5 books to play out the current loose ends. (Book 2 chases down one of those loose ends.) I have listened to it twice and I suspect I will give it another listen somewhere down the line, perhaps to refresh my memory when book 4 appears. No regrets about this purchase.

absolutely. This novel had the feel of one of Heinlein's YA SF novels. It pulls you into the SF elements subtly through the characters, but doesn't overwhelm you w/ excess math, while still being technical enough to feel like its real tech instead of star-trek deflector dishes.

What did you like best about this story?

I like that, dispite the story being told from the 'main character's POV, the secondary characters get their character development, and it feels every bit as awkward and ill planned as any 18-21 yr olds decisions.

Which scene was your favorite?

the MC's repeated attempts to 'talk pirate' and no one gets it.

I underfstand the author has more books in this series finished. I sincerely hope they make it to Audible as well, and i really enjoyed the story + narrator combo.

If you like Space Adventure then this book is for you!

I was recommended this book by a friend and let me just say... What a fun ride! The characters were well thought out and the story was solid. Sure it was a bit over the top at moments but it reminded me a lot of a small mercenary from another series. I am off to get the next audiobook.

Reliving a million past future FAILS

I never liked the appellation, "Rig gers!" and now cringe every time I hear it. I would have preferred the author stick with Marine's "Ooh Rah!". The same with Admiral/Captain "Millie", I see her more of an Admiral Paine than a Millie, much like the Final Fantasy X-2 character. Oh, well.

Captain "Mitch" Williams continues to waft male pheromones like freshly baked bread with every new female he encounters seemingly wanting to bed him. Jealous much? Well, Yeah! While this genre is classified as SciFi, that part of the story is clearly touching lightly on the Fantasy genre.

{Spoiler Alert}

I was please to find that most of the Riggers survived the final battle in Book 1 but was dismayed when they were mostly turned into cannon fodder in Book 2. Also, most of Christine's role, between fighting to stay alive, was struggling with internal conflict about who she was and flipping between needing to save Mitch or kill him. It jumped the shark when Mitch was severely stabbed multiple times in the gut yet was able to recover by an unhealthy amount of meds and some tight stomach bandages.

much better than the way it started!

This story /series has a lot of concepts and tech we are familiar with from so many other places like Star Trek, Star Force, Undying Mercenaries, Terminator, Empire's Corps; in fact I thought there was a connection to Nuttal's Empire's Corps at first since I thought I heard "Avalon." But no.

The back- (and front-) stabbing crew thrown together in the first book has worked itself out well before this installment, so some of the complaints I had there are no longer viable. There is good character development, and the original overabundant shake-my-head carnal scenes are absent in this book. This is about plot.

There's a lot that's familiar here. It's well-written and has its own differences from the others in the genre. There is mystery in wondering who is cloned/remade and who is really dead. There is excitement and danger. The time travel aspect ("past futures") is the most fascinating and unique to this series. If you like this genre, you should like this series too. It's a good one.

A good book to continue the book 1 ... but a bit wordy on unnecessary descriptive runs. I like MR Forbes and read much of his work ...

I can't get enough of this series!

This is one of my favorite scifi military series. Mr Nuttall and Kafer make a great combination of narrator and writer.

The books were coming at a good pace a few months back, I hope that you guys return to that pace.

it is a great series and I enjoy a lot I love how he is bringing characters alive in one book then bringing them together later in others I can't wait for the next one

Captivating story

This is book ten in the Empire Corps Series. The war is not going well for the Commonwealth. Wolfhanes forces are pressing on all fronts. The Commonwealth realizes they have a high placed spy in their midst. Brigadier General Jasmine Yamane, who is my favorite character in the series, is being held prisoner in a POW camp on the plant Meridian.

This book picks right up where the prior book Retreat Hell stopped. Stalker is pursuing the spy, with the help of Kitty, the head of Intelligence. I am becoming fascinated with Kitty and her sneaky methods. Jasmine and the men captured with her are attempting to escape the POW camp and return to the Commonwealth. Jasmine rescues about a 1000 people from the POW camp and manages to arrange their transportation to Avalon.

The book is well written, the pace is fast and the suspense builds throughout the story. Nuttall continues to develop the characters. Nuttall is improving as a writer with each book he completes. Jeffrey Kafer does an excellent job narrating the story.

Good thing its fantacy

I've been loving the series and enjoy the dystopic view...just glad it is fiction.

Wait....what just happened???

While the first book laid a lot of ground work on personalities and could be slow going, Contact picks up speed with an effortless touch of twists to make you want just 5 five more minutes of story time -- no matter how late it is! The right balance of surprise, but not over the top unbelievable. A really enjoyable story. And if you're not listening to Ray Porter read it to you, you are really missing out!!

Wonderful second audio book. Humans manipulated while others hide. What do the Aliens want? Telepathy real or false? What is next?

Narration is key to keeping the story going at jet sped. A must book.

Where does Contact rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

I love this narrator! He does women's voices wonderfully and has so many ranges for the men's voices it makes it fun to listen to. Book 2 definitely leave you hanging. I can't wait to read number three.

Meh...nothing really happens in this book.

nothing important really happened in this book. I was looking forward to the second book in the series but this was 9.5 hours of meh... Ray Porter is top notch as usual and can make a tax law book sound interesting.

Too many words, not enough story, abrupt ending

I really dislike it when a book races, races, races and then abruptly stops, as if the author had to stop for a bathroom break and then never came back to finish it. I wish I had not bought the audible. You have to stay with the kindle as there are huge blocks of repetition that one has to skim over again and again. And again!

I loved the first one! Vikas Adam was wonderful, as usual.

What disappointed you about Destroyer?

Almost everything. Let me caveat what I am about to say with this; I LOVED the first book. I thought it was fantastic. I thought the story was strong. I was really looking forward to reading the second book because this universe fascinated me and I wanted to see how else the author could write historical fiction.

Unfortunately, this was a book that did not add to the story, did not advance the story and took a strong protagonist and turned him into a bumbling, indecisive, morality-juggling tool to earn the author an additional paycheck. I am going to go into some SPOILERS now, so if you are planning on listening to this book, please move on to the next section:

1.) In the first novel the paradoxes were easily explained away due to the fact that an entire timeline was wiped out. In this book, especially at the end, the paradox of Denny kidnapping an earlier version of himself should have already occurred. In the first book it never happened which makes me wonder a.) how did he complete his original mission if one of him was missing, b.) why did he have no knowledge of it since it happened to scout him after his home timeline ended and c.) why make it more confusing than it had to be?

2.) The plot devices needed to keep this story going are absurd. Early in the book he has an opportunity to stop everything from happening when Lydia's grandson has Iffy tied up. Instead of just doing it, he postulates that he couldn't live knowing that he caused one version of Iffy to die...Even though he had done that once in the original book and had to have known that it would occur again. So instead of letting Iffy "die" he lets an entire world "die" by going along with Lydia's plan.

3.) How will Denny be able to undo what Lydia did in Germany when he has no clue what happened? He was too busy feeling badly about stealing a pair of jeans rather than finding Lydia.
