    A Series Review
I wish that I would be able to edit my review of the first book in the series to add the thoughts I am about to state here.
The series title 'The Empire''s Corps' is a poor choice for this series. This is not a series about a space marine corp. Battle does occur often in the series, but the storyline is about the fall of civilization across multiple light years in distance and why it fell. Each book focuses on one reason the civilization fell and the reason is mostly viewed through the eyes of a small set of exiled Marines. I would have named the series 'Professor Leo Caesius, The Waning Years of Empire (banned)'. Yes, it is a long title but it is what the series is about.
This is a socio-political treaties in a very fun read. You may not agree with the conclusions stated in this series, although it seems to be common sense and seen in our own history. This should not take away from the enjoyment of the books. The characters are rich and Nuttall builds them in a way that they are sympathetic. I care enough about the characters to feel said when they are harmed or killed. The action is fun, and many times the action is unique.
If you love dystopian, apocalyptic, military and/or politics you will love these books. This series is not hardcore science fiction. I am very happy to have listened to the 9 books.
    series
good series... this particular book was bad. very slow... hard to follow... love the others though
    Intriguing
This is book nine in the Empire series. This one goes back to the heroine, Terran Marine Belinda Lawson, of book three When the Bough Breaks. Belinda has been tasked to insure security of a conference of leaders of the core worlds. Glen Cheal an Imperial Marshal, has been assigned to head the security for the conference and Belinda is assigned to him.
The first part of the book takes place on Terra Nova with both Belinda and Glen are arresting the rioters. Glens partner is killed but Belinda was able to save the rest of the team. Glen is taken off his case looking for the nihilist and is sent to Island One to take command of security for the conference. The second part of the book deals with the conference security.
The story is about political intrigue and espionage. The book is well written and held my interest. I wish there was less repetition in the book.

But man has never been able to live in peace, and even Earth's sad fate has failed to slow the call to war. Most of the colonies lack the industry and economic power to sustain their own armies and navies, and they look to the mercenaries of the Great Companies for aid in time of war. The Eagles command the highest rates of any of the companies, and leaders bankrupt worlds to pay their price. The next generation of the Crimson Worlds
    Any additional comments?
Another great book by J Allan. This book is the continuation of the fall, which is the last book of the Crimson world series. The story takes place 17 and 33 years after the fall and centers on the legendary general Eric Cain's two sons who have both risen to power but on opposite sides of politics and public opinion. Darius Cain is the leader of the mercenary army called the Black Eagles who contract their services out to the rich across the human colony worlds, resolving conflicts with extreme prejudice. Elias Cain is the leader of the planetary police enforcement agency. Elias enforces governmental planetary law with a strict blind justice approach. The two estranged brothers both face an unknown enemy that threatens both of their livelihoods and the existence of mankind. A great start to a new series.
A good story and it keeps you coming back for more
Good story a little hard to follow but when you get the idea the story line becomes like a item you can't quite put down.
    Undertones of authoritarianism without action
This is the first book in the entire series I've read and I didn't know there were other books in the series when I picked it up.
As a military scifi, I was expecting a bunch of good old mindless action. That's not what I got.
Instead, I got a bunch of subplots and political twists with minimal action. There were a multitude of scenes that were only connected much later in the book. Each scene lasted long enough for me to start to like the characters, and then those characters went away for several chapters. A new scene would start, and it's as if I was starting an entirely new story - seemingly unconnected to anything else in the book.

    Smart protagonists!
Fun read. It was really nice to see people making smart decisions instead of doing stupid stuff to create additional drama in the narrative.
Good, old fashioned SF reminiscent of Heinlein
There's a simplicity and an innocence to the books in this series that reminds me of "Golden Age" science fiction. If you're looking for highly complex plotting, deep and intriguing character flaws, or science based explanations for things you're going to be disappointed. This a series for fun. The good guys are very very good. The bad guys are clearly defined. The technology is interestingly imaginative and entirely unexplained. It's a fun, predictable, good guys win kind of story.
I wanted to like it, but the agenda ruined it
Regardless of whether or not I agree, I hate having anyone's political agenda thrown in my face so hard that I can't just ignore it. The Silver Ships has the hallmarks of being a very interesting, classically styled sci-fi story. But the author is unfortunately very heavy handed in his application of his political agenda throughout the book. He accomplishes it by suddenly demonstrating his agenda so heavily that one cannot simply ignore it and move on. And when he wraps up one agenda item, he saturates the story with another. Then he returns to the interesting story, pulls you into full attention, then hits you with more politically motivated content in such a way as, again, you can't just ignore it and move on.
I could make a list of the author's ideas that make up his agenda, but that doesn't make my point. I listen to books like this to escape society's current problems for a little while, not to be reminded of them by being repeatedly slapped in the face with them.
This could and should have been a enjoyable and interesting book. But in the end, I just couldn't wait for it to end so I could move onto something that actually allows me the fun and escape I'm looking for.
As for the narration, Grover Gardner delivers an admirable performance. He maintains a good pace and does a good job of fleshing out the characters. I probably would have skipped the last third of the book if his work didn't keep me going.
    Engaging
Performance was well done and had just the right development. A rounded perspective of the characters decision making really helped this book breath.
Good story, narration: wish for a little more surprise
Good story: humor, flow and plot; characterization and development. Wish there were a little more surprise in the plot and main character slightly less "superman."
    Only a little though.

Reluctantly the commonwealth deploys the Commonwealth Expeditionary Force to Thule. But all is not as it seems. Engrossing
Stalker and the Marines are back on the Commonwealth of Avalon after the disaster on Lakshmibai. This series needs to be read in order as it is written as one long story divided into installments. Not too surprising our heroes fall into the traps set by Admiral Singh and rush to aid the world named Thule.
I am glad to see Jasmine is still in-charge of the Commonwealth Forces. Mandy is in charge of the Avalon government, she was wounded after an assassination attempt. The Commonwealth is at War which came as a surprise to everyone. Our villain Singh is leading the attack on Avalon and Commonwealth. Thule has fallen to Singh along with a large number of the Commonwealth Forces, Jasmine and troops are now P.O.W..
Nuttall moves the story through his well developed characters. The book is full of action; lots of suspense as everything gets worse. This book like so many others ends in a cliff hanger. Jeffrey Kafer continues to narrate the series.
    Becoming repetitive.
It's a bummer. I like the series so far but it seems that by now he's just recycling scenes and descriptions. I haven't counted how often we get yet another description of pain and suffering and how powerless the current story teller feels about it. But it seems almost a constant thing.
We get it. Society is falling apart and everybody suffers and the brave Marine Corps soldiers feel powerless.
Can we stop repeating that every five minutes?
A good read not as good as other books
I liked the continuation of the Terean marine story. The book the pace was very slow and got tedious at times. All in all this book was not my favorite by a long shot.
It should have been named Listening Hell
    Any additional comments?
It took me months of listening on and off to finally drudge through this book. I really enjoyed all of the previous books, but this one was like listening to paint dry.
Starting to be all the same....freshen it up
Would you try another book from Christopher G. Nuttall and/or Jeffrey Kafer?
I stopped listening to the series after this book. The story line just needs an injection of new plot lines. I really like the narration and is why I stuck with it this long. I will give the series a rest for a long while then maybe come back.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
    Really good narration
Did Retreat Hell inspire you to do anything?
Well.....yes. Put the series down for a while. I like some of the characters a lot but its just as a old paratrooper....marines ain't all that and neither is the story line.

    Members Reviews:
    Lots of Action
This is one of my favorite space operas. It has been great fun watching Ryk Brown evolve into an excellent author. This is the 13th book in the series. The series should be read in order otherwise the reader is lost. This author does not go back and fill in details from prior books.
In the last book, Earth has been cleared of the Jung. The Arora and Celestia are all shot up and the asteroid repair station is also damaged. In this book the repairs are in process and Nathan sets out to clear the Jung from neighboring star systems. He hopes to save them from destruction by the Jung and convert them into allies for the Alliance. Jessica once again goes undercover on a strange planet. The Arora faces off two Jung battleships alone. Unfortunately, Brown kills off one of the key characters. Oh, how could he! The book ends in a cliff hanger.
The book is well written. In fact, Browns writing improves with each book. The plot twists and turns. The action is non-stop and the pace is fast. Brown continues to build his characters and adds new ones. I cannot wait for the next book in the series.
Jeffrey Kafer does an excellent job narrating the book. Kafer has narrated all the books in the series, which I think is great to have only one narrator for the series.
So you wanted a cliffhanger...here it is
Where does A Show of Force rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I listen to audio books everyday, especially when I am working. I listen to about five books a month. I attempt to listen to books that will stimulate my creative and intelligent side with some reasonable level of drama. This book was confusing because the author made two of the smartest main characters pretty dumb to create drama and to hook us in for the next book. We don't need a hook to keep us reading, we need a good story.
Would you recommend A Show of Force to your friends? Why or why not?
I would recommend the series with caveats. I like the series (all the previous books), so I hope Mr. Brown will resurrect the intelligence of the remaining main characters, so that they can save the galaxy.
Which character as performed by Jeffrey Kafer was your favorite?
I really like Jeffery Kafer. I like his work so much, I look for his books to listen to.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I did have an extreme reaction to this book. I was pissed that Mr. Brown killed off one of the main characters. This character was one of my favorites. If Mr. Brown kills off another main character, then I might reverse my opinion of this series. I listen to these books for pleasure, not pain. Write books that give hope and not sorrow. If I want really sorry stories, I will listen to the news.
    Bomb it to bits
I read / heard the entire series. It's entertaining enough, and a bit addictive. However, when I got to the end, after 15 books of 10 chapters each, I realized it wasn't over.

If this was not a Halo book it would be better...
What disappointed you about HALO: Hunters in the Dark?
This book decided it would have all it's characters be simple and single layered. It brought down already developed characters such as Sarah Osman and it didn't progress or add to the story of Halo in any positive way.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I am a huge Halo fan. I feel like this was a complete throw away novel. To change the story to something i would find more enjoyable i would make Luther Mann a more solid character and not have everything just magically line up to fix problems that should have better answers to, and saying that i would need to remove the Spartan 4s since one is a solve everything by just being there character and the other is a background soldier with no reason to be there.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
Every character was its own. Dialogue was lacking but that's not the readers fault.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from HALO: Hunters in the Dark?
I feel like i'm being way to harsh on this novel, but as a Halo novel this falls way short. I would cut every scene with Sarah Osman do to the fact that they all make her seem incompetent.
    Any additional comments?
First and foremost i am a crazy person who thought about this too long.
The worst books i ever read were the Innocent Mage / the Awakened Mage by Karen Miller because the dialogue was crap, along with the characters being single layered and felt the lack of progression.
Now this book is far from those but my complaints remain and to put the title Halo on this book that did nothing for the story except shit on already established characters just makes me question why they even tried.
With the upcoming Halo 5 and the audio dialogues Hunt the Truth, one would think the story would be in line with some part of the upcoming halo events, instead they threw away a part of the history they could have told better at a later time.
This book felt like cookie dough cutouts and very weak compared to my favorite books of all times Halo the Fall of Reach and Halo Ghosts of Onyx.
The one and only part of this book i found exciting was the monitor 000 Tragic Solitude but the minimal exposure to him as a monitor was irritating.
With all that said, i have listened to Halo the fall of reach through Halo Mortal Dictata, and out of the 9 i listened/ read this is the lowest halo story.
    A very good read.
    I enjoyed this very much.

In the ruins of a future America, 15-year-old Ice Cream Star and her nomadic tribe live off the detritus of a crumbled civilization. There is no medicine, no treatment; only the mysterious rumor of a cure.

    Hauntingly Real and Beautiful
    Any additional comments?
I'm a junky for the dystopian/ post apocalyptic genre, so this book seemed right up my alley based on the description alone, but I was pleasantly surprised to find it was so much more than I could have wished for. There is a richness to the world building, the language and the characters that is really beautiful and hard to shake off when you're done. So many of the reviews I read before buying this book had mixed feelings about the use of language in this book, as it's written entirely in an imagined slang that is loosely based on contemporary African American slang, with elements of Spanish and possibly French mixed in. The narration of this book is so on point that by the end of the first chapter it's like listening to well performed Shakespeare, in the sense that even when the words are foreign to your ear none of the means no is lost because the delivery of the lines manages to bring it all together. And by two or three chapters in, the language with all of its new words and rules is perfectly familiar and comfortable to your ears.
The story itself is as heartbreaking as it is exciting, you will find yourself on the kind of emotional roller coaster that a truly epic tale should take you on - the kind that you don't want to get off of. It's real and truthful in its darkest moments, but it's not all doom and gloom. There are characters who will make you laugh just as hard as you might have wanted to cry right before they entered the scene.
Several reviewers have likened it to the hunger games for grown ups, and yes, it appeals to the same kind of person who loves those books. But I don't think that the distinction as "not a YA" book is felt as heavily for the reader as those reviewers want to make you think. Especially if the YA books in the genre are something you enjoy!
    Wonderful story. Great language.
I absolutely loved this book. The language is incredible. The story wonderful and sad and totally intriguing. The book is spoken is another language, a mix of incredible metaphors as well as a new language to match the world the author created.

    Enjoyable SciFi, recommendable, with faults
If you are into the expanse franchise this is still worth to listen to or read. It's great to be on the Roci with the crew and I really enjoyed it.
However this and the following book (Babylons Ashes) have really one big problem in their story.
--- VERY SMALL SPOILER - basically none at all ---
Something terrible happens, some bad guys do it, and even though it is very very terrible they still have the support from most of the fraction of humanity they belong to. Given the gravity of what happened it is not credible at all that they would have that support. Or not without at least a generation of brainwashing and isolation from facts. But that didn't happen.
It's really quite bad that the story kinda relies on the people being fine with that bad thing, so very often in that story I just got annoyed because of this. It's just not credible without assuming the that all the normal people are being extremely stupid, bad or downright sociopaths. And stories that rely on people, a whole fraction of humanity even, being stupid or bad really aren't well thought out.
    Nevertheless: Enjoyable.
    Perfect.
Enjoyed it as much as first three books of the series.
    Can't wait to continue it.
    Definitely recommend.
    Good again
After the poor narration of the last book, this one was excellent and the story line was top class, leaving us hanging and waiting for the next instalment .
Thank god we our narrator back!
10/10 best audiobook I have come across. Thanks for this.
Hopefully someone explains the blunder of the last narrator.
    Yay!
I had to skip the previous book due to the narrator being unbearable. So good to have Jefferson mays back with the Roci. I've grown to be a part of the crew and can't wait to get flying again.

    Publisher's Summary:
High school senior Tanner Malone has bombed the Test, a high-stakes exam that establishes how much he owes for his corporate-funded education. Burdened by a crushing debt that rules out college, Tanner enlists in the navy of Archangel, a star system with four terraformed worlds. But he hasn't factored in the space pirates.
Just as Tanner begins basic training, the government ramps up its forces to confront a band of rowdy raiders who are wreaking havoc in the void. Led by complex and charismatic Captain Casey, the outlaws love a little murder and mayhem, but they are also democratic, egalitarian, and devoted to freeing each new recruit from debt and corporate oppression.
Assigned to the front lines, Tanner soon finds himself caught in the crossfire between ruthless foes, cruel comrades, and unforgiving space. Can he do his duty when good and evil look so much alike?

    Drawn out, Good Ending
Intriguing story, long sequences of build with little resolution. Opens wide doors then resolves them very quickly. It's a decent listen, but not something over the top good. If you are a patient person this book is for you. If you like action, look elsewhere.
DIE HARDIn Space! The student loan wars
I picked up Elliot Kays rollicking Good intentions on a whim, thinking perhaps it would make for an entertaining break from my usual interest in Sci-fi and fantasy, and was pleasantly surprised when beneath the highly adult themed overtures of the book was a very well written, character and plot development driven book.
Shocked by this turn of good fortune I got the sequel Natural consequences and was even more impressed by his ability to tell a fantastic story while seducing his readers with all the sensuality you would expect from Sherrilyn Kenyon or some such other author.
Seeing as I had gone two for two with him I dared to take a chance on this book. Now, anyone who reads Sci-fi and fantasy will be quick to point out that THESE TWO GENRES ARE NOT THE SAME! No matter how readily the guild and (publishers) may want to and continue to classify them both in the same category.
The Sci in Sci-fi denotes Science, meaning the author has to make a plausible case for scientific origins of events and technology in both story and character. Unlike Fantasy fictions in which spell casting and magic can be easily explained through less ornate imagination.
This is why many Fantasy fiction writers dont or cant do good sci-fi. The science has to be plausibly explained to be good and this is not something that can be done easily or as easily as explaining a spell.
I say all this to preface my trepidations when I came across this book, as my only experience with Mr. Kay had been with the two fantasy books above so I was unsure if I wanted to sully my experience with a bad sci-fi book. Based on the strength of his prior works, I cashed in my confidence points and spent the point on this book, and boy am I glad I did.
    What a story.
This is a very well written and developed Military sci-fi. Yes you will find some familiar themes like the reluctant hero thrust into uncertain situation, acting with valor and honor and with a bit of luck, overcome the bad guys almost single handedly.

    Gripping
I have enjoyed reading this series so far. Book six has us back with Stalkers Stalker again. Nuttall is continuing to build most interesting characters. The bad guys are really bad like in the old B movies of the 1950s. Nuttall kept the story about the characters and doesnt wander off into lots of techno babble but he does get hung up repeating his fall of the Empire causes.
The story is fast paced with lots of action. I was surprised the author killed off one of the original favorite characters.
Nuttall has the Commonwealth of Avalon expanding into interstellar space making contacts with other successor states. The leaders of Avalon and Col. Edward Stalker agree to a diplomatic meeting with a nearby world on Lakshmibai a neutral world. The Lakshmibais government hates off- worlders and saw a chance to rid itself of hated intruders. Jasmine Yamane must lead an untrained army on a race to the Capital City to save the diplomats from annihilation. There is lots of fighting in this book, I think maybe over three fourths the book is the rescue fighting.
Jeffrey Kafer has done a good job narrating the series.
    Back to the main story
This series seems to be jumping all over the place with the different stories lines. Book 5 tied back into the main story at the end and I was hoping this would build from there.......but it didn't. This book is a continuance of what I call the "Main Story" which to me revolves around Col Stalker and his marines. It deals with high tech vs. low tech battles in which the low tech side has unlimited resources.
I can't wait to see where Christopher Nuttall is going with this series.
Starting to be the same thing over and over
I think I need to maybe give this series a rest. I keep hoping for something new but keep buying something repetitive and old.......my fault. I like the writer and performer.
a bit repetitive but still a good story line.
The story line is a rather repetitive one, if you read book 5 and it feels like a political science lecture more than a book. on the other hand it rings far too close to our earth as we live now.
    Not bad
Although I'm am tired or all the scowling and inward wincing that's always going on, I live the characters and the story. Not prose but good reading.
