Two governments with one objective: to stop the spread of terrorism by any means possible. America and Israel are lifelong allies in an age-old war. To win this battle they will have to sell their souls.
A mutilated body has been discovered - a body not meant to be found. But now that it has, Pandora's box is open and secrets never to be learned have been revealed. An Israeli woman living in New York has been murdered. She has been raped and butchered, an outrage that ignites a fuse that burns all the way back to Tel Aviv.
Enter FBI Agent Chloe Mather, a hard-charging ex-Marine who has no sympathy for the kind of maggot who could commit such a violent atrocity. A veteran of the war in Afghanistan, she was one of the first female Marines to be deployed into an active combat area. She struggles with PTSD and the consequences of a fatherless childhood, yet this is a woman who accepts no pity and operates according to a moral code that is second to none. She'll stop at nothing to find the psychopath responsible for this unspeakable crime.
In Secrets of the Kill, Mather and this code will face the ultimate test. What begins as a challenging homicide becomes much more, and Mather is pulled into an investigation that involves the mob, Israeli intelligence, and a radical terrorist faction. They say that blood is thicker than water. But is it thicker than the bonds of patriotism? Mather will ponder this question and many others as she fights to bring an innocent woman's murderer to justice and prevent a geopolitical atrocity from taking place on American shores.

    Great Heroine!
    Any additional comments?
First things first, let's get right down to the best thing about this book, and that's the MC Chloe! She is the toughest of the tough, I mean, she is an ex marine!!! How awesome is that!! She takes no prisoners and is definitely one of the toughest heroine I've read in a long time. I always enjoy a book where the female main character is strong.
I'm not going to rehash the summary because I could spoil something so I'll get right to it. This was a fast paced and thrilling read. It has everything you could want in a great read. The characters are all well written and developed, Chloe especially. I loved the dynamics between herself and her partner Dom and they worked really well together.
The plot was really fast paced and intriguing. We have action, suspense, mobsters, politics and a impressive measure of intrigue. This is the type of book that once you start, you have to keep turning the pages to see what happens!!! It's full of twists and turns and with plenty of mystery and secrets, to keep everyone happy and from it's kick ass characters to it's thrilling plot, Secrets of the Kill is a must read.
Caroline Miller made Chloe come alive. She brought Chloes' tough spirit to life which I loved. I found her easy to listen to and will definitely check out more narrated by her.
*I received this for review from AudioBookBlast. All thoughts and opinions are my own.*

    Great to hear the Beginnings
Very pleasing story telling indeed. Terrific to get some more "back story" for those of us who only came in at the Slow Horses stage.
Such planning by the author to hear the inimitable Jackson's name uttered before....
And Sean Barrett. How brilliant can a voice actor be? This makes about the 30th? book I have listened to read by this person. I have chosen some because I was hunting for a particular title, but often, I was following the voice, skill, presence.
I hope the journey continues for a long time yet.
Great thriller and Sean Barrett is terrific as always
Really enjoyed this and the Dame Ingrid character, although not as good as Slow Horses. Like the way he can sketch out a character with just a few lines and you can almost see them before you eyes. And I enjoy the tradecraft. Sean Barrett is brilliant as always. He gets the tone pitch perfect.
A Fabulous Noir Thriller - One For The Connisseur
Mick Herron is a new author to me and if "Nobody Walks" is an indication of the quality of his other novels then I am in for a rare treat! Herron writes edgily and often lyrically bringing his characters to vivid life in a way that draws one in irresistibly. Set in contemporary London and narrated compellingly by another new name, Sean Barrett, this is a gritty, absorbing and, on occasion, very violent story. It tells of one man's quest to determine the truth concerning his son's death - ostensibly from falling from a balcony when he was smoking dope.
Tom Bettany, our chief protagonist, is an ex-MI5 joe facing the dangerous task of discovering who supplied Liam, his son, with the drug he smoked - Muskrat. Bettany quicky becomes aware he has been set up by his old employer to eliminate one of two people and is also being hunted by vengeful gangsters, relics from his old undercover life.
I listened to this novel for 7 hours through to the end the very first time a work of fiction has hooked me so totally. I cant think of a stronger recommendation.
    Great listen
    I enjoyed this book
The storyline was interesting but the back play in the characters that go on to the Slow Horses series is a reward .
Not certain if this should be read before or after the other series
Sean Barrett's narration is great as always.

    Publisher's Summary:
It should have been simple, this finding the next-of-kin. But for Officer Cody Byrne, the explosion that injures the Shakespeare professor is more than suspicious. So begins the unraveling of a man's life, a man's secrets, his loves and birthright, as Cody follows his trail to Washington, DC, then London, trying to glean something of his shadowed past from the Renaissance documents he left behind.
It begins in Montana, but soon takes her on a global journey, as well as a psychic one, after an Iraq tour as an Army Reservist leaves her shaken. Eager that no one finds out about her PTSD, she toughs it out, even while grieving for her brother lost in Afghanistan. A challenge coin he left behind is another mystery, the blank side and the side that says: "PLAN X: Always with you, Wherever you go."
Cody's journey takes her back to the family she hardly knows, and the surprising revelations of a professor's past.
    Members Reviews:
    A different kind of thriller
This is a fun, quick listen with an original take on the typical thriller. Cody Byrnes is suffering from PTSD after a tour in Iraq, and now works as a cop in Montana. A deadly explosion in a university lab opens up an intricate mystery involving spies, lost works of William Shakespeare, and the sordid history of the Royal Family, along with Cody's own mysterious family history, and the settings vary between Montana, London, and Buckingham Palace.
Cody is a flawed protagonist, as are her family and friends. They are all interesting and still have secrets that could be uncovered in future books which I would definitely read.

    Publisher's Summary:
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author comes an explosive new thriller.
Catherine Ling is one of the CIA's most prized operatives. Raised on the streets of Hong Kong, she was pulled into the agency at the age of fourteen. If life has taught her anything, it is not to get attached, but there are two exceptions to that rule: her son Luke and her mentor Hu Chang. Luke was kidnapped at age two, and now, nine years later, he has astonishingly been returned to her. Catherine vows never to fail him again. Now, just as she is building a relationship with Luke, it seems that someone from Catherine's past is playing a deadly game with her, and using those she cares about as pawns. Three are dead already: the former prostitute who helped Catherine when she was out on the street, a CIA agent with whom she worked closely, and the informant who helped her free Luke. Someone is picking off the people Catherine cares about one by one, with the circle narrowing closer and closer to those she loves the most. Catherine has made many enemies throughout her life, and she has no choice but to weed through her past to find out who is targeting her now, and then go after the vicious killer herself.

    Catherine Ling Novel
This book has so much action and suspense going on from the very beginning. It kept me reading to find out what Catherine, Cameron, Hu Chang, Luke, Sam and Venable were going to get into next. I like having all my favorite characters like Eve, Joe, Jane and Caleb together with Catherine. I want to find out more about Catherine and Cameron's relationship which I hope will be in the next book. Jane is still trying to get over Trevor but I would like to see her find her self again before she deals with her relationship with Caleb. Thank you Iris Johansen for another fantastic book.
In general I like this author
In general I like this author. However, when you read a lot by the same author the books do start to become very formulaic. That is starting to happen to this author. Her characters are quite complex and you learn more about them as they intertwine in many of her books. This book focuses on the character of Catherine Ling who, if you have read others by this author, you already know fairly well. This book brings out a softer side to her, more of a maternal side. When I first began reading Iris Johansen one of the things I loved about her books is that frequently the unexpected happened; making you gasp while reading. However, that was missing in this book. Overall it is still a good read, very entertaining, but it doesn't bring the same level of story telling to it as her earlier novels.
    I enjoyed the book
I enjoyed the book, but Johansen is getting some what predictable in her stories. And I am not sure I will read future ones because an example, I am sure she is going to squeeze another sequel out the story and the main villain really did not die as the ending of this one implied. Not positive, but relativity sure I know what her premise for the plot in the next book.
    Wonderful read
Every time I finish one of her books I instantly start anticipating the next one. This is no exception. I loved every page. It keeps you on the edge in suspense even on the last page.
I truly enjoy Iris Johansen's novels

There are characters you'll love to hate, and there are other characters that get "lucky".
This book just goes to show you theat not everyone is what they seem. No real super heroes or super hero powers, just real people using their brain, and other parts of their anatomy.
The book is an enjoyable listen, with many good moments and a story line that sticks together all the way to the end

"Engrossing.... A recommendation for even the most seasoned thriller reader." (Diane Donovan, Midwest Book Review)

    Vivid Storytelling
This book was provided to me in exchange for an honest review and Im very glad I jumped on the change to get it. The book is listed as a thriller but Im not sure its true in the traditional sense. If youre looking for non-stop action and fight scenes this probably isnt your book. In The Lupane Legacy the author builds intrigue throughout the book only to bring it to a crescendo near the end.
What the author does really well is telling the story so thoroughly that it makes the reader feel as if they are actually there. He is able to describe the scenery and surroundings vividly without clichés. In addition he gives great background on the characters in a succinct way so that you know there history and what theyre thinking, without it being too long winded and boring. This really brings the story to life and is right up there with some of the best story telling out there.
Mr. Heitsch does a great job will all of the accents and characters. His narration is well done and well timed which really helps bring the story and characters to life!
Enjoyable, easy & realistic politics/spy thriller
Darby Holladay has created a pleasant, nicely paced thriller, with characters that feel realistic, fleshed out and approachable. The locations feel well researched, the motivations completely believable, and the resolution satisfying.
I confess, I was a bit lost at times by some assumed ability on the reader/listener's part to associate with elements of upper middle class DC beltway life (honestly, like I know what a specific golf hole on a specific course is sufficiently to get a metaphor?) ... but having a number of friends who work in the same area and with similar kinds of people, I particularly appreciated the more real world feel of people who are, in essence, spies.
CIA conference rooms that haven't been updated since the 80's, office football bets, and small scale practical jokes are far more real to me than descriptions of Jason Bourne esque super computers and high powered spy agencies. When coupled with goals I can understand and very human desires? Even better. As an acquaintance once said "Listen.. 90% of my job (that I can't tell you about) is just boring office crap... and the other 10% is only marginally better"
The core plot did catch me off guard, I was expecting one thing and got another, tho I wouldn't have complained about an additional twist or two. I also liked that Holladay has created a world with military personnel, that does not simply devolve into endless gun porn.
    I get it, it's a shotgun. Good.

    Corrupt Skies:bk 1
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
    Maybe
What does Michael Lesley bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Michael Lesley did a good job making sure each character had a unique voice. My only issue was that some of the characters shouted and I think a story should be told at the same decibel throughout.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    yes
    Any additional comments?
I liked this book.I liked the premise. It was well written. Is it a flight crew doing robberies at every stop?Read this fast paced story and find out!
Michael Lesley did a good job making sure each character had a unique voice. My only issue was that some of the characters shouted and I think a story should be told at the same decibel throughout.
    It ends seemingly in mid-sentence
Harris Fox is a US Air Marshall flying endlessly from city to city watching for illegal activity and terrorists. When a string of unsolved bank robberies across the country points to frequent travelers, possibly even a fellow Air Marshal, he his recruited by the FBI to tail one of the suspects. Harris is also a military veteran and will need all his skills to track the suspect and defend himself.
In Corrupt Skies we get a glimpse into the lives of travel professionals not all of it complimentary. Is it true to life? Hard to say, but it is generally entertaining and sometimes funny. His fellow Air Marshal and best friend is a bungler and an idiot, whose dark features look more terrorist than the suspects hes watching for. Harris is constantly trying to win back his ex-wife, while simultaneously keeping his options open.
The story is generally funny and doesnt take itself too seriously. This lighthearted tone sometimes works against the novel when a serious scene plays out, and we arent too concerned with the outcome, even shrugging when a well-developed character dies.
The plot is pretty far fetched and mostly unbelievable, but isnt really the point. It is the characters and their interactions that the author is most interested in. Their cartoon banter will either be funny to you or sound like a canned television comedy/drama.
Michael Lesley performs the story with his easy-to-listen-to voice. There is nothing wrong with his performance, but he doesnt seem to change his tone or speed when the story goes serious or fast paced. His character voices are excellent and you will have no problem deciding who is speaking.
Corrupt Skies is the first book in a series of unknown length. It ends seemingly in mid-sentence. And rather than feeling like a cliffhanger, has the listener wondering why at only five hours long, the author couldnt have given the listener a little more of the plot.

    Another madman ho hum novel
Lots of plot holes. Suspension of disbelief in overdrive. I suppose he is trying to evolve Bond but all I see is ridiculous plotting. Bond is out fought by amateurs and girls no less. There are several opportunities to kill the villain yet none are taken. Some preposterous lack of use of security services just so Bond can cowboy on.
    Good plot
    Well written, nice plot
Next to last in more than one way?
One of John Gardner's weaker entries. Couldn't he come up with something better than somebody who wants to be the next Fuhrer? The business in Puerto Rico doesn't really make sense as part of some bigger plan by the villain.
As good as I remember Sir Ian's Novels
I love this version of Bond. Great villain, great settings around the globe, the usual gadgets and now he has a Lover that is close to an equal.
It was difficult to stop reading this book. Which, in my opinion, is a mark of an excellent writer.
    Seafire
What a great continuation of the last book. Left me wanting to read more and more. Action packed with James Bond addressing the changes being made to MI-6. In the end 007 still takes care of business.
