In early 2002, six months after the World Trade Center attack, Hayden Stone who took early retirement from the FBI, is working for the CIA. On his last assignment to Afghanistan a colleague is killed and Stone blames himself for his death. A friend in the upper ranks of the CIA offers him an assignment to the South of France. Stone accepts, thinking this is exactly what he needs to get his life back on an even keel: French life on the Côte dAzur. Well, hes in for a surprise. He has little time for the Mediterranean ambiance, as two terrorists, acting separately, attempt to murder him. Meantime, Stone meets an old love, a contessa, whom he had seduced and abandoned years before.
Through a series of setups and encounters, Stone learns that a brutal Middle Eastern terrorist is in Provence to deliver a strain of the Ebola virus to major U.S. cities. At the same time, the CIA and French intelligence have targeted a seriously ill al Qaeda functionary who is seeking medical attention in Nice. Complicating matters still, a Saudi prince and his son-in-law on a yacht off Villefranche are assisting this al Qaeda figure. They lease the contessas palace so that, without her knowledge, doctors can administer to the functionary. Stone romances the contessa who loves him, but doesnt trust him and with cause, for he also has become fond of a young French researcher, who secretly works for French Intelligence.
Stone certainly has his hands full.

Classic espionage hero takes on today's terrorists
Hayden Stone is a likeable cool cat, part old school government agent, part James Bond maverick. He ably takes on some very bad guys in this engaging yarn that brings us inside today's complicated fight to contain global terrorism. Some of the appeal of the tale lies in following Hayden's mixed success with the opposite sex.
One of Kerns' best constructs is the lead terrorist, a complex and very deadly bad guy. One of his weaker characters is a man whose corruption is too obvious/predictable. This detracts from the suspense the author is building.
Overall, Kerns has created a protagonist we want to follow on subsequent missions. The narrator does a fine job of bringing these characters to life. I look forward to the next installment.
    Fast paced espionage terrorist thriller
What made the experience of listening to The Riviera Contract the most enjoyable?
Loved the action sequences, also the romantic scenes.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Riviera Contract?
The hero Hayden Stone and the contessa on the yacht. Action and romance
Which character as performed by Evan Greenberg was your favorite?
    Hayden Stone
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Murder, intrigue, and romance on the French Riviera.
Adventure, some intrigue, some romance - 3.5 stars
A retired, newly divorced FBI agent takes a contract with the CIA. Although risky, what begins as a straightforward assignment soon becomes much more.
The writer blends action scenes and romance believably - no 'love at first sight' scenes here. Romantic entanglements are not what is typical in the genre, so if you are looking for a Harlequin-type story, you might be disappointed with this book.
The story could have taken place anywhere, i.e. the Riviera is not key, or even expanded upon.

    Good story Old News.
When I got this book I thought I was getting a terrorist story from present day that would be relevant to todays times. It was a good story that would have been even better if it didn't take place in the 80's with Yassar Arafat still in charge. Was not what I was looking for.

Jaggard sees his opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. The Professor has requested a meeting with Audley, his old adversary, and with one of Jaggard's own men to abet him, Audley can be safely relied upon to overstep the mark in his attempts to frustrate the KGB.

    A good Listen
The Publishers Summary is misleading. Without being a spoiler....
There had been a leak of information in a Minister's Dept. 'R and D' found the leak and advised the PM. The Minister is wanting a scalp from 'R and D' because he had not found the leak and has been made a fool in the eyes of the PM.
Meanwhile a secret service dept has a spy in with the Soviets and can not disclose the information they have as it would put their agent in jeapody. A plot is hatched to get 'R and D's' David Audley.
Both high ranking KGB are coming to the UK and Panin has requested a meeting with Audley. Panin has his own game already in motion. Where does Zarubin fit in to the picture?
So this story involves the jealousy between UK Security Services as well as politician's ego and, Spy vs Spy. It gets even more complex as the story is told through the experiences of Tom (Sir Thomas) who is Audley's appointed minder .
It is very well read by Dan Morgan and a good listen.
    Hard Going
I found this tale very hard to follow, as if l were a fly on the wall during conversations where l wasn't allowed to be privy to any of the back stories of the plot.
It was also difficult to discern which character was speaking as the narrator didn't vary his tone anywhere near enough, and that contributed to its being so heavy going.
    Late Audley
What made the experience of listening to For the Good of the State the most enjoyable?
I love Anthony Price's books so it was always going to be enjoyable. Some of the books are better than others and this is one of the best. It has all the elements I enjoy, a background of espionage, political manouevering, the story told from the viewpoint of a character other than one of the long-running protagonists and a bit of an historical theme that Price generally puts into his books. In this case, it was castles. Occasionally, there is more historical background than espionage in these books and they can become unbalanced but this one was spot on.
What did you like best about this story?
I especially liked the character of Tom Arkenshaw who takes the lead in this story. He is the son of an English baronet and Polish mother who researches motte and bailey castles in his spare time. He is brought in to protect David Audley who works for "research and development", an ill defined government organisation, because he is going to meet his opposite number in Russian intelligence. Tom's difficulty in working out what Audley, his political masters, the Russians and the CIA, are up to is compelling and his potentially divided loyalties are well done.

Good the first time... better now!
I got into Anthony Price a good few years ago, but probably after the early ones had gone out of print. I am really glad that Audible has chosen to issue them as audiobooks.
Right, This is "classic Audley"... you really don't know what the man is up to until you've "read" it. In this book, particularly, the narrator has done an excellent job. The accents are good, the voices are solid and certainly match my view of the recurring characters. A really good job!

    Members Reviews:
    Better than Le Carre
My father was a fan of the Le Carre spy books, but I find them a little slow going. The Old vengeful by Anthony Price has the well worked out and devious type of plot that the Le Carre books have, but is faster moving. The historian/agent, Dr. Paul Mitchel is put on the job of investigating the first 11 ships of the Royal Navy named HMS Vengeful. What they discover seems to suggest that the seventh, a Napoleonic era frigate holds the key to an ongoing KGB operation; but how could an 1812 incident possibly be relevant to 1982?
I recommend this book for lovers of fast moving spy stories. One thing I liked about the book is the lack of semi gratuitous sex which some authors seem to think their readers expect in a spy story.
Cold War spies with a touch of HNF
Published in 1982, Anthony Price's The Old Vengeful is a cold war spy novel with all the fast plotting, unexpected twists, faceless agencies, and wryly literate prose we came to enjoy from the genre. I have always had a soft spot for Le Carre and the like, and would in any case have read this with pleasure. I picked the book up, however, because I am a lover of Historic Naval Fiction and the cover picture (on the American edition) of a warship of the Napoleonic era caught my eye. Was there anything for a reader of HNF? Sure enough, while the plot unfolds in the here and now (well, 1982 seems contemporary to us oldsters), there is a good bit of naval history and adventure for the aficionado of HNF. It seems the Russian plot our heros are trying to foil is wrapped up in a warship, the HMS Vengeful. Problem is, there have been twelve Vengefuls through history and we don't know which one holds the key. Most of the attention focuses on Vengeful number seven, a frigate. In 1812 she defeated a French frigate before being wrecked on the French coast. The crew was captured and imprisoned in Alsace. A group of them escaped, trying to make their way across France to freedom.
1812 was a pivotal year for Napoleon, and somehow these escaping English sailors are important to his grand strategy of conquering Russia and beyond. Why did Napoleon move heaven and earth to find these humble sailors? How does their story relate to the current KGB operation? Historian/spy Paul Mitchell is sent to find out, along with the daughter of the commander of Vengeful number eleven and a minder who reports to the rival of spymaster David Audley.
As Mitchell & Co move across England and France, dodging the KGB, the DST and old-fashioned gangsters, they uncover more and more about both the events of 1812 and their current situation. HNF fans are treated to a good deal of information about the French treatment of captured sailors, naval prisons and escapes.

    Publisher's Summary:
Winner of the Crime Writers' Association's Gold Dagger.
Set some years after Dr David Audley's wartime experiences, this novel introduces a double agent who tries to recruit him back into British intelligence. The author's previous books include The Labyrinth Makers and Other Paths to Glory.
    Members Reviews:
    interesting
this is better after knowing more about the series. Try 'The Labyrinth Makers' or 'The Hour of the Donkey'.
Post Korean War and very much the Cold War. The USSR have really infiltrated the British Intellegence. France is making a mess in Algeria and does have a strong grassroots Communist Party.
Fred Clinton is using a double agent to get crucial hard copy evidence of USSR thinking during the Hungarian Uprising and the Suez conflict which also reveals another highly placed double agent. While both the French and British know of the USSR thinking, the US does not and, it was an election year!
    Its complicated.
The double agent used to call Aubrey back to the fold is having his own crisis. His ruminations and plans take up a lot of time as the plot slowly unwinds. He desperately wants out of the mess he is in. Hence this is not a good book to enter the series. It is slow and it helps if you know a little of what was happening in the world at the time it is set.
Think John Buchan rather than John LeCarre, and very possibly a romantic version of actual events. Price had a few mates in the Intelligence. So.... 'interesting'.

Even in the era of glasnost, a defector is worth having, especially if he is a senior computer specialist in Russian military intelligence. But when the defection goes wrong, the British are left with three bodies and two inadequate clues to the nature of the information they might have been offered, and which now lies buried somewhere in the collective memories of David Audley and his one-time colleague Major Peter Richardson.
But what is the secret that Audley shares with the half-Italian Richardson, now frightened into hiding somewhere in Italy? For once, David Audley has no idea and the race is on to find the elusive Major. But Audley's objective is fast being overtaken by modern political imperatives, ones very different from the black and white certainties of the old Cold War days.
    Members Reviews:
    better to start somewhere else
written in 1989, this is the last book.
Character development being more Price's style, we meet a much older David Audley who has been called back to Europe. With two of his protegee as subordinates he is sent to locate an ex R and D person who seems to hold some vital information.
"The Hour of the Donkey", introduces Audley's father and alludes to R and D during WW11. "A New Kind of War" brings David Audley into focus, at the end of WW11.
R&D is a little like a Think Tank that is placed above MI5 and MI6 and Special Branch.
However it is still the situation that the full story is not given to it's Field Workers. And David has to call on some old contacts as things go belly up.
