Fun, witty and interesting

As a fan of comic books and superheroes, I am always sceptical when it comes to new superhero "universes". But as I got into it, I soon forgot any of the inevitable comparisons to any existing characters and storylines. I found a richly crafted world that is startlingly parallel to what might become of our future and heroes that seem to logically spring from this new reality.

These are not pale rip-offs of existing superheroes like I expected. Despite some naming similarities, each hero is an original and a product of the environment from which they spring. Lowell manages to fill every established superhero niche but in a way that hasn't been done a hundred times before. Each one has their own distinct personality and I loved the way Lowell bounces them off each other. It has a great Watchmen-esque feeling to it.

Below the surface are some scathing political and social commentaries that, rather than being forcibly shoved down your throat, are cleverly woven into the storyline making the revolution seem like a natural, patriotic, American reaction to the given situation. This is by no means earth-moving fiction, but it is what it is. A fun, witty and interesting romp through a fictional future with plenty of action and a bit of a message. I hope this book is not a one-off because I would like to see this new "universe" fleshed out with some further adventures.

You'll probably either love or hate the political message in this book

This isn't a bad book. Whether or not you think it's a good book is probably going to depend on what you think of the political message that runs through it. If you believe that some day the government will become so corrupt that there is no hope for it and at that point square jawed and ruggedly handsome leaders will rise up to give a focus to the downtrodden to raise a second American Revolution and bring back the beliefs of the Founding Fathers and the Constitution, then this could be a five star book for you. On the other hand, if you're somebody that refers to members of the Tea Party political movements as nutjobs with tinfoil lining their tri-cornered hats, then this is probably going to be more of a one star book.

A superhero story set in an alternate America

The Suns of Liberty series is set in a future America that has undergone a second Great Depression. This economic crisis resulted in a takeover of the American government by a coalition of businesses. These businesses have veto power over the government and through that power have de facto control of everything.

A New world for us to explore

Would you consider the audio edition of The Dawn of Mars to be better than the print version?

Yes, I like to cook, drive, clean and sometimes listen while I'm at work. With a book I'd have to put it down to get anything done. Plus a good narrator can bring a book to life that I might not have been able to get into otherwise.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Dawn of Mars?

When the star ships showed up and were threatening to start a war on the planet Mars if the major didn't give up command of the planet. That was pretty intense. I was glad the author decided to go with the reasonable solution for the captain of the ship in the lead.

Which character as performed by Roberto Scarlato was your favorite?

All the main characters were pretty intense. Max Lupine was the bad guy trying to take over. He was a believable character. I can imagine a top official doing what ever it takes to be 1# and take control of everything.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No only because it was a little long for that.

The Nightmare

I have to end this. My targets in site making his way up the stairs. I pull back on the trigger and wait for the nightmare to come to an end. Again Charly cries out to me but it's not my name he's saying. I turn to him as the bullet misses The Wolf and hits the girl.

No! I scream uncontrollably.

She falls down in a heap. The Wolf steps over her not wanting to bloody his shoes. He disappears into the safety of the compound and out of my grasp. Blood runs down the steps and the world turns dark again.

Everything fades to ash, nothing is left. Eternity in the wastelands is the price I pay for my failures. I try to find strength to leave this place, but I've been stripped there's no hope left. I close my eyes and let the darkness consume me.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

This was really an outline of a book, maybe two books. It needed color, description, not once was someone's face actually described. I really went into this trying to like it. It was written for someone that already knew what everything looks like in their imagination, namely the writer's.

What could Lynndsie T Hamilton have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

The story lacks the detail needed to paint you a picture of the surroundings. I spent the entire book lost to the backdrop; was it in a desert, a post-apocalyptic city, a traditional Japanese countryside? I don't know. There's advanced technology, but there's magic of sorts, ghost-like characters, prophecy, none of which seems to fit or are well explained to why they exist. There were times I didn't know if I was inside a mountain cave or outside in a garden. The details were vague and it was like visiting a museum at night with only a narrow beam flashlight. I could see what I was looking at but everything around it faded to black. The characters were equally confusing, their place in the story was superficial and I had no emotional connection to them, not even to the main character who just seemed to be a shell with no real depth. When the main character's friend dies, it's more of an emotionless footnote. Things were described in one-word adjectives, not explained in any detail that provided color or depth.
